Cincinnati and Wichita St. headline AAC March is a long ways off, but the nonstop excitement starts now. Here’s a preseason look at the American Athletic Conference men’s basketball teams for the 2017-18 season.

Justin Guglielmetti Sports Editor Cincinnati Bearcats - The national media isn’t exactly ignoring Cincinnati, but I don’t think they are getting all the love they deserve either. Coming off a 30 win season, boasting one of the best defenses in the nation and returning four of their top five scorers, the Bearcats look poised to top the American and make a deep tournament run in 2018. A player to watch: junior point guard Cane Broome, who joins Cincy after transferring from Sacred Heart. Broome was the NEC player of the year two years ago and while he won’t be as ball-dominant on his new team, he could form one of the most dynamic backcourts in college basketball alongside Jacob Evans.

Wichita State Shockers - We’ve been wondering for years when the AAC will finally make the leap and be recognized as a power conference. With the arrival of Wichita St., that time may be now. The Shockers at their best are probably the best team in the conference, returning all five starters from an underachieving squad that finished eighth in KenPom’s final rankings and took Kentucky to the brink in the second round.

They will lose ground early to Cincinnati as sniper Landry Shamet and swingman Markis McDuffie recover from offseason injuries, but come the new year, look out.

UCF Knights - Even for a college team, UCF’s roster looks a little top-heavy, so this ranking could end up being way off with an injury to any key pieces. But barring the unforeseen, the Knights look like legit contenders for the conference crown. 7’6” Tacko Fall has proven himself to be more than just a sideshow, coming less than a rebound shy of averaging a double-double and shooting 71.5 percent (!!) from the field in only 26 mpg. Look for Fall and bulldog perimeter defender Aubrey Hawkins, a Michigan transfer, to anchor one of the conference’s stingiest defensive units.

Houston Cougars - If this were the NBA, I would have justifiable concerns over Hous-

ton’s lack of options behind Rob Gray. Gray fits the mold of a thousand ball-dominant college point guards before him, undersized but armed with enough athleticism, skill and sheer moxie to throw his team entirely on his back for a cinderella run. Though it’s a tentative one, he’s my pick for conference player of the year. But after him, what are this team’s options? They were already a two-headed monster last year and now one of those heads, sharpshooter Dameyon Dotson, is in the NBA. If Gray ends up looking more like the pro version of Trey Burke than Kemba Walker, the Cougars don’t stand a chance.

UConn Huskies - Speaking of Kemba Walker, the Huskies may have just found his second coming in Jalen Adams. If you’re looking for a deep preseason sleeper to make some real noise in the tourney, this team may be a good bet. Size should be an issue but who isn’t that true of these days?

SMU Mustangs - I’m sure some of you are all SMH at this SMU pick because the Mustangs won 30 games last year (also, that means the American has three teams coming off 30-win seasons. Why aren’t we a power conference again?) But this team lost three starters and over 50 percent of its offense from 2016-17 and is replacing that talent with an inefficient point guard in Jahmal McMurray who plays the same position as Shake Milton, the only leftover impact player on the roster. Maybe if I was the sports editor of SMU’s paper I would have great things to say about all the unknowns on the end of the bench but as things stand, I’m foreseeing a second-division finish in the conference.

Meanwhile, UConn will get talented playmakers Terry Larrier and Alterique Gilbert back from injuries; both should be upgrades over Adams’ best departed teammate, overrated chucker Rodney Purvis.

Tulsa Golden Hurricane - Homer time, break it down! Joe Lunardi is already rapping on my office door and screaming “indefensible by every known standard” but let’s be real, it’s not like I’m predicting a top of the conference finish here. And I really do think the Golden Hurricane is all sorts of talented. Like I’ve said before, their success will come down to what kind of offense Frank Haith wants to run. If he wants to make this the Junior Etou show because he’s the only well-known commodity outside of Tulsa, then this team is doomed. If a little more control is ceded to Sterling Tap-

Temple Owls - Are you buying the Obi Enechionyia stock? I’m not so sure that I’m as hot for the guy as everybody else seems to be coming into the season. Sure, some measure of hype is understandable after the inside-out threat ranked in the conference’s top 10 in both blocked shots and three-point shooting but there are plenty of small red flags. One, he’s a senior, which likely means that NBA scouts don’t see his talent as anything transcendent. Second, the 6’9” big man averaged a whopping 5.8 rpg last year despite playing over 32 mpg. No doubt Obi is good but this team will bleed points and I don’t think he and junior point guard Shizz Alston have enough in them to make up the difference.

ECU Pirates - It’s the same problem that exists in East Carolina. The Pirates have one

legit superstar in do-it-all forward Kentrell Barkley. You don’t have to squint too hard to see a lot of Draymond Green in Barkley and Green almost single-handedly carried Michigan St. to the Final Four a few years back. Still, unless Barkley’s three-point shooting makes a leap it’s hard to imagine him being able to take this ramshackle group of transfers and chuckers anywhere.

Memphis Tigers - If you are searching for the pick that has the best chance to come back and bite me in the ass come season’s end, look no further. You can never count out the Tigers, who last finished below .500 in 2000, and it’s not like this year’s squad lacks high-level talent. The only problem is most of that talent is completely unproven and comes in the form of transfers (Kareem Brewton and Kyvon Davenport) and a freshman (David Nickelberry). They could gel and this team could win 20 games ... or this mix could prove toxic as coach Tubby Smith fails to manage a team without continuity. We’ll see.

Tulane Green Wave - You know, I’m starting to think there’s an ongoing theme with these second tier teams. It will be the Cameron Reynolds show in “Nawlins” as the athletic swingman will do his damndest to make up for a porous defense and lack of other reliable options on offense. Mike Dunleavy is too sharp a basketball mind for this team to not improve by some significant measure in 2018 but let’s be real here; a 100 percent improvement on last year would amount to a grand total of 12 wins.

USF Bulls - When South Florida moved to the American from the Big East in 2013, they were probably anticipating having an easier go of it. WELL HOW YOU LIKE DEM APPLES USF?? That reference was as pointless and unnecessary as the Bulls’ season figures to be. Aside from Tulio Da Silva, a promising two-way big man and owner of perhaps the suavest name in the conference, there is nothing to see here.

The rest of the college b-ball world also exists Hold on, you mean to tell me there are teams outside the American conference? Joe Edmonds’ll break’em down for you.

Joe Edmonds Sports Correspondent Duke - The Blue Devils are the preseason No. 1 team for the second year in a row.

They received a huge boost to their 2017 recruiting class when Marvin Bagley, previously the No. 1 recruit in the 2018 class reclassified to the 2017 class. Coach K will be looking for Grayson Allen to lead this group of youngsters to try and prove they belong at the top.

Arizona - The Wildcats are another team that is going to be relying on a great recruiting class to keep them near the top. Allonzo Trier decided to come back to college ball, which is a huge boost for Arizona.

Kansas - KU suffered big losses with Frank Mason graduating and Josh Jackson heading to the NBA. That won’t be enough to stop Jayhawks from succeeding this year, as the seemingly endless flow of talent has them as favorites for yet another Big 12 crown.

Michigan State - The Spartans will be very strong this year, thanks to the return of Miles Bridges, an early favorite for player of the year. They found success with their core last season, and look to build on that in 2018 with added experience.

Kentucky - This will be a standard season for Kentucky, as they once again will feature a lineup of mostly freshman. How well they mesh will determine how long they’ll be dancing this year.

Villanova - Jalen Brunson and Phil Booth are going to be leading these Wildcats that are just two years removed from winning a national championship. Though Josh Hart and Kris Jenkins are no longer there, Nova’s guard duo fits Jay Wright’s system perfectly and

Florida - Florida returns a strong core of players that won 27 games a season ago, and are adding three 4-star recruits in the freshman class. Though they will be attempting to keep up with Kentucky in the SEC, the Gators are going to be a tough matchup come tournament time.

Wichita State - Almost every player from a team that won an impressive 31 games last season is returning. They look to run away with the American Athletic Conference title in their first season after joining the conference.

USC - Coach Andy Enfield took the USC coaching position in 2013 after wow-ing the country with his Florida Gulf Coast teams and has been building his team steadily since then.

Headlined by Bennie Boatwrights, this is going to be his best iteration yet. The Trojans will

give Arizona a run for their money as the best team in the Pac 12.

North Carolina - Even though they lost a large portion of the team that won last year’s national championship, you can never count out a team coached by Roy Williams. Joel Berry is a critical returning player, and his leadership will help the new players and the returning supporting cast that will need to play a bigger part on the team this year.

In perhaps the most heartbreaking loss of the season, TU collapses in the fourth quarter against SMU, dropping their seventh game of the year.

Zane Cawthon Sports Correspondent Tulsa arrived in Dallas on Friday to take on the Mustangs of SMU and left empty-handed once again, suffering another discouraging defeat in what has definitely become a season to forget.

QB Luke Skipper had his least consistent performance of the season, completing only 9 of his 23 passing attempts with one touchdown. Last week, it was RB D’Angelo Brewer who sat out with an undisclosed injury. This week, it was Shamari Brooks’ turn to miss out, suffering an injury in the first quarter that would sideline him the rest of the game. Despite this stumbling block, the Golden Hurricane led for the entire night until the fourth quarter, when SMU QB Ben Hicks bombarded the TU secondary with two 30+ yard passes to set up a 9 yard touchdown run by RB Xavier Jones to give SMU a 35-34 advantage. Tulsa simply could not find an answer to their offensive struggles; a Mustang field goal and a very costly

interception committed by Skipper with little time left would seal the Hurricane’s fate.

Injury is only the most recent plague which has beset this team.

Penalty struggles, playcalling inconsistency, quarterback changes, defensive laziness, pure bad luck. The list grows larger every week, with a new setback stepping up to take the place of each resolved issue. The mark of true character in a team is the ability to continue to move forward and fight, despite all the disappointment and frustration of past mistakes or misfortunes. Starting now, character is all that this team can fight for. Putting up a good fight in front of a home crowd against #22 ranked Memphis would galvanize the team’s spirit for the rest of the season. It’s time to buckle down and break some hearts of our own.

Soccer seasons come to an end on sour note The women’s team draw their final match, while the men split a pair.

Joe Edmonds Sports Correspondent The Golden Hurricane men’s soccer team played a pair of home games this week. The first game was a nonconference contest against Saint Louis, followed by a conference matchup with Cincinnati.

The game against Saint Louis was a largely defensive contest.

Neither team was able to score in the first half or for the majority of the second. Then, with ten minutes remaining, the scoring began.

Tulsa struck first, as Kay Duit gave the Golden Hurricane the lead on a pass from Miguel Velasquez. Just as it was looking like a win for Tulsa, Saint Louis managed to tie a score with less than a minute remaining in the game. As a result, the game headed into golden goal overtime. Saint Louis scored in the first period to take the 2-1 win.

The defense came through clutch for the Golden Hurricane against Cincinnati. Chase Bromstedt scored on a penalty kick in the second half and TU shut out the Bearcats the rest of the way to pick up the 1-0 win.

Tulsa will end the season in Memphis on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. Heading into that game, the Golden Hurricane are 5-8-1 (2-4 American Athletic Conference).

The women’s soccer team played their final game of the season on Friday night. The game was a home contest against the Memphis Tigers.

Tulsa played defensively for much of the contest, as they had to endure 31 shots from the Tigers, 10 of which were on target. Goalkeepers Courtney McKeon and Rebecca Defer made 8 saves to shut out Memphis. After both halves and two periods of extra time, the game ended in a 0-0 draw.

Seniors McKeon, Defer, Amanda Creason, Tana Dake, Christina Holmes, Eden Opie, and Rachel Thun-Blankenship were all honored after the game for their participation in the Golden Hurricane women’s soccer program.

Tulsa’s final record for the season is 3-12-4 (1-6-2 AAC).

The Most Contentious Bryant Sit down and shut the hell up Martavis.

The uber-talented Pittsburgh Steelers receiver was benched this past Sunday after going on a Twitter rant blasting his fellow wideout, rookie Juju Smith-Schuster for taking some of his snaps and targets. I don’t know, maybe instead of whining about your lack of opportunity you can learn how to run something other than a post or slant route and actually produce when you’re facing single coverage from the opposing teams’ second best cornerbacks. As for Pittsburgh, I hope they at least consider trading Bryant (he’s publicly asked for one) instead of just being petty and keeping him on the pine.

If only so I can know whether to drop him from my fantasy team or not.

National Shame I just realized there was a pretty major sporting event we didn’t discuss here: a few weeks ago, the United States men’s soccer team lost 2-1 to Trinidad & Tobago and failed to qualify for the 2020 World Cup. Here are two relevant figures for you: 323.1 million and 1.4 million. Do you know what those are? They are the respective populations of the US and Trinidad & Tobago. In other words, we lost to a country that has .4% of our population and that is a freaking disgrace. American soccer has been a punchline for years now but as someone who cares about our presence on an international stage, something has to be done.

It can’t just be that our best athletes choose other sports, I’m assuming there is something going on at a systemic level. Maybe we prioritize athletic play and AAU clubs and don’t spend enough time developing skill at a young age? I don’t know, I might just be talking out of my ass here. Trump, appoint a sports czar (Bill Simmons could use the work) and let’s get to work on this.

Here come the newbies!

Hold on, do you mean to tell me that NBA rookies are good? A year after Joel Embiid played for 15 minutes and Dario Saric and Malcolm Brogdon engaged in the least heated Rookie of the Year battle in history, the association is suddenly flush with gamechanging newcomers again. You’ve got Ben Simmons, looking every bit the Magic Johnson clone that his most ardent supporters thought he would be. I’ll eat crow on this one; I was sure Simmons was going to be a bust with his lazy attitude, lack of success and total inability to hit a jump shot, but here he is averaging close to a triple-double.

There’s Jayson Tatum, thrust into a starting role after Gordon Hayward’s horrific injury and responding by averaging over 15 ppg on 50.9% shooting. Reports of his belowaverage athleticism were unfounded and his half-court offensive game is polished as hell. Lauri Markkanen is perhaps the first big man prospect I’ve seen who can be legitimately compared to Dirk Nowitzki. That is, he’s not just a 7 foot European power forward who can shoot from deep, he actually plays like the big German. Also his nickname is the Finnisher (you’ll never guess where he’s from. That’s right, Norway!) and that’s going directly to the Mt. Rushmore of nicknames. Two big names that are conspicuously struggling: Lonzo Ball and Markelle Fultz. I’m sure the latter will turn it around, he’s been playing through a shoulder injury and was the consensus top pick for a reason.

But Lonzo baby? He’s shooting 30%, getting abused on the defensive end and running out of excuses for Lavar to hype him up. Regardless, we’ll be watching all these guys’ careers with great interest.

coming from inside the apartment. Officers contacted the Resident Director on duty and conducted an investigative search and seizure of drugs and paraphernalia.

Oct 12 7:20 a.m.

While on routine patrol University of Tulsa Campus Security Officers made contact with an individual who was rummaging through a dumpster in the parking lot of Oxley College of Health Sciences Building.

The individual stated they were homeless and collecting items from the dumpster to sell. The individual was asked to leave and trespass warned from the building. A contact card was completed. The individual left without further incident.

Oct 13 1:45 a.m.

While on routine patrol University of Tulsa Campus Security Officers conducted a pedestrian check on a non-University of Tulsa individual stumbling through the Phillips lot with no shoes on. The individual appeared to be intoxicated and had a warrant and previous other charges. A contact card was created, they were warned for trespassing, and escorted off campus.

7:00 p.m.

University of Tulsa Campus Security Officers received a report of a student sexually assaulted by another student in their University apartment. This investigation is on-going.

4:45 p.m.

While on routine patrol University of Tulsa Campus Security Officers observed an individual crawling under parked vehicles in a parking lot. Officers made contact with the individual who stated that he was not a TU affiliate and was a juvenile. The individual was placing plastic utensils under tires. The juvenile removed the plastic utensils and their parent was contacted.

Oct 14 1:10 p.m.

University of Tulsa Campus Security Officers were dispatched to investigate a possible larceny of a bicycle at the Lorton Performance Center. Officers spoke with a student who stated that they had secured their bicycle at the Lorton Performance Center. The student returned the following day and noticed their bicycle lock had been and cut and their bicycle had been stolen.

6:00 p.m.

University of Tulsa Campus Security Officers were dispatched to the Brown Village Apartments in reference to a noise complaint. When officers spoke with the residents they noticed the odor of marijuana

University of Tulsa Campus Security Officers were dispatched to the west side of Chapman stadium due to a non-University of Tulsa juvenile being dehydrated. They were transported by EMSA (Emergency

Rally in Barcelona amidst Catalonia controvery A rally for Spanish unity gathered hundreds of thousands attendees in Barcelona, many of whom called for Catalan leader Carlos Puigdemont’s imprisonment. The Spanish government removed Puigdemont and over 100 other officials as they took down Catalonan institutions in response to the region’s declared independence. Veteran Catalan politician Joseph Borrell told demonstrators, “Mr Puigdemont may speak on behalf of some of the Catalan people, but I am also Catalan, I am also part of the Catalan people, and I do not recognise his right to speak in my name.”

Puigdemont can run for re-election in December, Spain’s foreign minister Alfonso Dastis said, if he has not been imprisoned by then. Spain’s chief prosecutor has announced they’re preparing to press charges against the pro-independence leader, who stated he does not recognize Madrid’s orders. Uncertainty for Catalonia’s future persists since Puigdemont’s separatist government organized and ran an independence referendum in Catalonia earlier this month. Despite 93 percent of the 43 percent of potential voters voting for independence from Spain, Madrid declare the move illegal and has since moved to dissolve autonomy.

Deadly attacks in Somali capital Mogadishu A 15 hour siege of a hotel in Mogadishu ended last Saturday after gunmen stormed a hotel and killed at least 20 people. It was feared more bodies would be found as security forces searched the building late Saturday. Al-Shabab, an Islamist militant group claimed the attacks, saying they’d chosen the Nasahablod Two hotel because it was frequented by security forces and politicians.

The siege began after one bomb was detonated near a former parliament house nearby, and a second car bomb was driven into the hotel. Local security forces and provincial leaders were due to meet on Sunday to discuss a joint strategy against al-Shabab. alShabab did not claim responsibility for the October 14th attack in Mogadishu that killed 358 people and was the single worst attack since the Al-Qaeda linked group launched in 2007. 56 people are still missing in the aftermath of that attack.

Puerto Rico to cancel Whitefish contract The CEO of the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority, Ricardo Ramos, stated last weekend that he is waiting on a resolution before canceling the contract with Whitefish Energy. Widespread scrutiny has spread that the $300 million deal was made with the two year old company to help restore power to parts of hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico.

During a Sunday press conference, Ramos said that the contract is “not canceled” as of yet,” as it requires 30 days of prior notice. The organization will be allowed to finish what they’ve started.

Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello had called on PREPA to cancel the deal just hours before the decision was announced. Questions about the contract are ‘interfering with everything’ and the distractions are not helping Puerto Rico rebuild. Rossello promises that the contracting process will be more transparent in the future, as he is going to appoint a finance official to PREPA to oversee contracting decisions. There is also a review in progress to investigate the circumstances of the original emergency contract.

If the review reveals no misconduct, Rossello promised he would move forward with the Whitefish Contact.

University of Tulsa Campus Security Officers were dispatched to section 106-107 of Chapman Stadium in regards of an ill person. Officers were able to locate the individual who stated they were just feeling light headed. Emergency Medical Services Authority treated the individual on scene, the individual refused transport to a local hospital.

11:40 p.m.

While on routine patrol University of Tulsa Campus Security Officers conducted a pedestrian check on an individual on the track.

The individual was affiliated with the University of Tulsa. The individual stated they had jumped the fence to gain entry. The individual was escorted off the track. No contact card was issued.

Oct 17 9:05 a.m.

University of Tulsa Campus Security Officers were dispatched speak with a student who had their bicycle stolen. The student secured their bicycle to a bike rack in Norman Village Apartments for the evening. The following morning, the student returned to find their bicycle had been stolen. Suspect information was unknown.

1:30 p.m.

University of Tulsa Campus Security Officers were contacted by members at the Newman Center when an individual that was previously trespass banned from campus was in their building. Campus Security detained and contacted the Tulsa Police De-

partment. The individual was arrested for a trespassing and another outstanding warrant.

Oct 20 1:25 a.m.

University of Tulsa Campus Security Officers were dispatched to the north side of Lafortune Hall in regards to a physical altercation occurring in a large group. Upon arrival officers met with individuals involved and were able to determine that a fight occurred between two individuals. Neither one of the individuals wanted to press charges. Officers informed the individuals of the consequences of their actions and that they would be contacted with further information.

Oct 21 11:50 a.m.

University of Tulsa Campus Security Officers were informed an anonymous party reported a sexual assault that occurred in the Fisher West Suites. The victim did not want to speak with security officers directly about the incident. The victim also declined filing a report with a the Tulsa Police Department.

7:10 p.m.

While on routine patrol University of Tulsa Campus Security Officers made contact with two Non-TU affiliates near Chapman Commons. Officers interviewed the suspicious individuals, who were loitering on campus playing a mobile game. Officers informed the individuals of the University being private party then escorted the individuals off campus through the south Tucker entrance.

Aware Tulsa: conviction of police officer sparks protest Shannon Kepler’s conviction of first degree manslaughter sparks renewed police brutality debate in Tulsa.

Alex Garrofolo Student Writer Former Tulsa Police Officer Shannon Kepler was convicted on October 18. It was his fourth trial dealing with the 2014 shooting death of 19-year-old Jeremey Lake.

The case added to national headlines because Kepler is white. Lake was black.

Kepler fatally wounded Lake in August, 2014, at Lake’s home. He testified that he went to the residence to seek out his daughter, who was in a romantic relationship with Lake. The two met at a homeless shelter.

Kepler claimed he had important information about Lake that he wanted to share with his daughter. He gained this information using Tulsa PD investigative tools.

What he learned made him concerned for his daughter’s safety.

Lake’s friends said he was unarmed and reaching to shake the officer’s hand. Kepler told the jury that he thought Lake was reaching for a gun.

The prosecution made sure to point out that the only person who claimed to have seen a gun in Lake’s hand was the man on trial for killing him.

A full report of what transpired when Kepler reached Lake’s residence can be found in the Tulsa World article or in the Washington Post story. Bottom line, Lake ended up dead.

Questions also arose about why, after firing his weapon, Kepler did not see fit to call 911 about the bleeding Lake. Kepler did turn himself in 2.5 hours after the incident.

The protest called for new leaders in Tulsa to seriously address the issue.

Kepler’s previous first-degree murder trials were in November, 2016, and February and July of 2017. Each ended with a hung jury.

Last week, a jury convicted him of firstdegree manslaughter and recommended a 15 year prison sentence.

On Sunday, a group calling itself “Aware Tulsa” protested outside the Tulsa County Courthouse.

The group, which at most numbered around 50, heard from a few different speakers in regards to police brutality.

Aware Tulsa held the event in conjunction with a national day of protests.

The speakers included Reverend Joey Crutcher. Former Tulsa Police Officer Betty Shelby fatally shot his son, Terence, in September 2016.

The District Attorney charged Shelby with first degree manslaughter when the shooting was labeled a homicide. In May, a jury acquitted her of the charges.

Joey Crutcher told the crowd, “We need to change the culture, definitely, here in Tulsa.” Later, Crutcher claimed he felt his son was “shot down” by Shelby while walking with his hands raised.

dan to retire. “We need new leadership in the city of Tulsa” Crutcher exhorted.

Another speaker made the statement that since only Mayor G.T. Bynum has the power to dismiss the chief, he needs to urgently take action.

State Representative Regina Goodwin, also on hand for the protest, concluded that people must never be afraid to stand up for what is right.

“As Pastor Crutcher said, when we’re talking about pro-justice, it doesn’t mean we’re anti-police. We’re just anti-bad police officers.”

Coriolis Force takes TU by storm TU’s ultimate frisbee community welcomes its newest team: the allfemale Coriolis Force.

Nick Rethford Social Media Manager When someone mentions club sports, the typical contenders come to mind such as flag football, baseball and soccer.

There is one lesser-known sport, though, that is establishing a strong community here at the University of Tulsa: ultimate frisbee.

Ultimate frisbee is a non-contact team sport played across the world.

It is played between two teams on a rectangular field, similar to a football field, with end zones at either end.

The offensive team passes the disc from player to player towards the end zone while the defensive team attempts to intercept the passes.

A goal is scored when a player completes a pass to a teammate in the end zone.

The sport is self-officiated, meaning there are no referees and players must call each other’s fowls.

The responsibility for fair play then falls on the players, a concept known as “spirit of the game.”

The “ultimate community” on campus consists of the already established all male team, Party Fowl, and the new all female team, Coriolis Force, led by junior Rachel Deeds and senior Claire Dang.

Since its creation, Coriolis Force has been drawing attention not only as the first all-female ultimate frisbee team but also as the first all-female club sport on campus.

At the center of it all, Deeds is tackling every challenge head-on while creating an inclusive and competitive environment for her fellow players.

Her love of the sport began in high school while looking for something new after years of playing soccer.

“The biggest thing that attracted me to the sport was the ‘spirit of the game,’” Deeds said.

“There’s a certain level of spirit and respect that everyone has for each other and the game no matter how much competition there is.”

Coming to TU, she joined, then co-ed, Party Fowl, co-ed being a term she used lightly.

“It was co-ed in the sense that it was like me and two other girls playing on a guys team,” she said.

“The majority of the time when we traveled to tournaments, I would be matched up with a guy.”

It was around this time that the idea of creating an all female team began to form.

Along with Dang, Deeds began holding information sessions to see if there were potential players to form a team. After generating enough interest, they decided to put their plan into action.

“There were about 10 girls who came to the information session last year, and, at the activities fair this year, a lot of those same girls came,” She said. “Since then, we’ve gained more momentum. One of the girls who came to the first couple of weeks of practice brought her roommate out one day, and the next week, that roommate came back and brought her best friend, which was really cool.”

Coriolis Force has two practices a week as well as one hour of unorganized throwing.

The team has attended two tournaments so far this year, one in Manhattan, KS, and one in Norman, OK. The tournaments have served as learning experiences for the team, giving them valuable skills that they have applied to later practices and games.

They have also given the team the chance to meet and bond with new people they never would have met otherwise.

Building a team from the ground up did have its share of challenges, though. One of the biggest challenges Deeds and Dang faced was developing a strategy to retain players.

The most common reason why new club sports teams don’t make it is because they can’t retain players, so they made sure to focus on creating an atmosphere that kept players around for the long run.

What they didn’t have to face, though, was any oppression from individuals who were against the idea.

While establishing the first all-female club sports team on campus is a big deal, they met very little opposition while getting team up and running.

In fact, quite the opposite. Most people were very supportive of them, especially the other team, Party Fowl.

“When Claire and I for sure decided to this, it was heartbreaking at first because we were splitting apart from the team,” she said, “but, in reality, we are just growing the ultimate community on campus, so they were very supportive.”

Even with the challenges and added stress that comes with getting a club sport up and running, Deeds is still having a blast and hopes to continue to share the experience with more girls as the team grows. “It’s awesome to see how eager these girls are to grow and to learn,” she concludes. “I can’t wait to see where this team is headed.”

TU receives comparative rankings from Forbes, Wall Street Journal From all over the US, media outlets are ranking America’s universities, and TU is scoring relatively well.

Grace McFee Student Writer While not necessarily a significant event for students, university officials wait with bated breath for college rankings to appear in various publications. Whether or not these rankings are accurate, completely subjective or are held in any esteem by the university, these rankings can often influence where prospective students choose to attend.

This years, Forbes ranks the University of Tulsa at #175 in top colleges, #129 in private colleges, #88 in research universities, #32 in the South, and #12 best college for international students. Their short blurb on TU discusses its founding in 1882, some basic statistics, campus goals and university traditions.

Wall Street Journal/The Times Higher Education University Rankings puts TU at #170 in the U.S. and in the 401-500 range for world university rankings. Information included on the website discusses when TU

was founded, campus layout, partnership with the Gilcrease Museum, research and the bell-ringing tradition.

US News Best Colleges List ranks TU as #87 in National Universities (colleges in this category offer a full range of undergraduate majors, plus master’s and doctoral programs), #49 in best colleges for veterans, #137 in best undergraduate engineering and #139 in best value schools. The article’s information on TU was much more descriptive than in the previous publications and discusses all the things mentioned above, while additionally including information on extracurriculars, greek life, athletics, petroleum engineering and acknowledges TU as being home to one of the first campus mosques in the country.

These rankings are calculated using a variety of factors and statistics from universities, such as selectivity, graduation rates, tuition, average GPA and more. Which of these factors are included can vary between publications, creating a confusing spread of differing numbers scattered across the internet. Interested students must navigate through these values before they can decide which ranking to trust, if any of them.

Fortunately, TU has ranked relatively well, consistently staying in or around the aforementioned values.

Nathan Hinkle Student Writer The Oklahoma economy is no longer “in crisis,” but hat doesn’t mean our economy is in the best possible shape.

I believe the two best solutions are restoring income taxes on the rich and an increase on the gross production tax on new oil and gas wells. Neither negatively impacts the average citizen and both produce a steady stream of funds for the government.

In comparison to other states, Oklahoma is lower than other major well-producing states such as North Dakota and Texas. Before a bill was passed in 2014, Oklahoma’s rate was around 7 percent which helped provide revenue for the state government. Now it is two percent.

One of the major taxes that funds the Oklahoma state government is the state income tax. However according to the Oklahoma Policy Institute, “Oklahoma has cut its top income tax rate by nearly 25 percent since 2004 . . . reducing annual revenues more than $1 billion dollars.” This massive

This idea also has the support of oil and gas producers themselves. In a statement given in April, the Oklahoma Energy Producers Alliance, a group of privately owned Oklahoma energy companies, have agreed to this rise in oil spending. Former mayor Dewey Bartlett Jr, owner of Keener Oil and Gas, stated “We believe that the oil industry should stand up and agree that returning the oil and gas production tax to its historical level demonstrates our commitment to help solve this serious state budget crisis.”

While some oil and gas producers are for the increase, groups such as the Oklahoma Oil and Gas Association and the Oil Independent Petroleum Association have stated that they already bear more than its fair share of the tax burden. While this bill may be controversial, this increase in taxes will help fix the current shortfall in the Oklahoma state budget.

loss of revenue causes serious problems for the state government for two reasons. The first being that the richest members exist in the top tax brackets and therefore pay the most to the government. In reducing the state income tax for the higher tax brackets, the state government has lost a large source of revenue.

Another reason is that inflation has risen since 2004 causing every tax dollar to be worth less. The CPI Inflation Calculator, run by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, states that the same dollar in January 2004 was now worth $1.33 in September 2017. Each tax dollar is now worth less than what it was previously. 33 cents does not seem like a

big deal but once extrapolated to millions of dollars, it becomes a serious problem.

A restoration to the old income tax on the top tax bracket also has less effect on regular Oklahoma citizen. According to the Oklahoma Policy Institute, “Oklahoma could restore a rate of 6 percent on income over 200,000 and 7 percent on income over 400,000. Only 3 percent of households would be affected by these new rates.”

Through using this tax, it would massively help the federal budget while causing potential problems for a small minority of people.

Through these two taxes, the Oklahoma state government will be more able to fund important government functions. This could save departments such as education, human services and mental and substance abuse services which provide for children and adults in their times of need. While these taxes help fund the government, they do not have massive effect on the populace at large.

These taxes do not afflict those who cannot handle the extra burden. Through new taxes such as these, the Oklahoma state government will be hopefully be able to properly provide for its citizens both rich and poor.

“Fake news” reflection of Trump, not the press

Trump’s continued use of the term raises concerns about the Constitution, calls into question his morals and displays his lack of personal growth.

Alex Garoffolo Student Writer The political fact-checking organization Politifact recently published an article that compares its use of the term “fake news” to Donald Trump’s.

In the article, the group claims that it uses the term to call out fabricated news stories that intentionally “masquerade as news coverage.”

However, when Donald Trump uses the term, he’s simply referring to any news coverage that is “unsympathetic to his administration and his performance.”

According to a count compiled by Politifact, Trump has used the term over 152 times in interviews, Twitter and press conferences alone. It begs the question: what happens when a president does not deal with dissenting opinions professionally?

First, there could be first amendment implications. In one recent tweet on October 11, Trump hinted that due to the large amount of “fake news” coming out of NBC, it might make sense to question their licensing as an organization.

This prompted a Republican senator to ask Trump if he was recanting his January 20 oath to protect the first amendment.

A professor of law at the University of Georgia featured in the article called Trump’s actions of “waging war on the press in an effort to delegitimize it” profoundly disturbing. Still another commentator added that Trump, as president, is better placed than anybody else in America to counter misinformation with correct information.

The fact that he simply slaps it with a the “fake news” label “undercuts a central feature of our democracy and places the larger First Amendment framework at risk.”

Second, the president is historically supposed to be a role model for American citizens.

What does it show the rest of us when the person who attained the highest office in the land can’t professionally handle, or even accept for that matter, any kind of criticism? It tells us that we don’t have to either.

There’s a reason it’s called constructive criticism--it helps you grow. Think of what you’d be like right now if, when any of your teachers ever told you what you did wrong on a paper, what you screwed up on a homework assignment or what you could do to fix your grade in her class, you just ignored her.

Chances are you wouldn’t have even made it to college, or would be doing pretty poorly when you got here.

Therein lies the issue with Trump’s behavior. He’s uncoachable.

He doesn’t listen to constructive, critical feedback, doesn’t appear to educate himself in depth on any of the global issues he’s dealt with since January and doesn’t seem to care what others think of him.

I’m all for the “don’t listen to the haters” mentality. But in high stakes, bipartisan politics, they aren’t haters. They’re constituents who need to be treated as such, regardless of Trump’s opinion of their statements.

Third, Trump’s behavior makes me question the reality in which he’s living. Each week he calls fake anything that’s critical of him. Almost never does he give specific plans on any topic, choosing instead toss us vague, open statements like “you’ll see, it’s going to work. It’ll be huge.”

From an outside observer’s perspective, that doesn’t sound like somebody who’s living in the here and now. Promising empty statements that don’t put any responsibility on himself?

Ignoring inquiries about any specific subject matter? Sounds like somebody who’s picking and choosing the facts he wants to believe make up his world. And if our president is purposefully living in another reality, it can’t bode well for the rest of us he so kindly left behind.

In his TED talk, Bill Eckstrom famously told the audience “What makes you comfortable can ruin you. What makes you uncomfortable is the only way to grow.”

Think of a time you took a class that required nothing of you but to show up, stay awake and maybe take an exam or two with questions ripped right off the homework.

How much do you really remember from that class? How much did it help you grow as a student?

Now think of a class that forced you to show up every day with your brain firing on all cylinders, constantly pushing you to solve more complex problems and delve into increasingly convoluted material?

I bet you went to office hours, didn’t you?

I bet you studied harder for that midterm than you thought humanly possible, didn’t you? Now the same question: how much did that course help you grow as a student?

In the end, it’s the same analogy with Trump, except on a larger, more dangerous scale.

He treats everything about the presidency as if he doesn’t need any counseling, any advising or any actual education to the issues.

He’s like the kid in class who sat in the back, struggling daily while never asking for help, putting up the front that he knew what he was doing, acting baffled when he failed the midterm.

Except Trump can’t push himself to admit failure. I have yet to hear him utter the phrases “I was wrong” or “I apologize.”

Part of the human experience is learning from your mistakes and becoming a better person from them.

But when somebody can’t admit that he made a mistake, can’t even physically admit that he may have been in the wrong, all of that growth potential just becomes another batch of “fake news.”

Don’t read this article, go watch “Blade Runner 2049” “Blade Runner 2049” is a pristine film that stands as one of the best of 2017, if not the best.

Ethan Veenker Variety Editor Every now and again, a film comes along, a film from which you expected contrivity and unoriginality that ends up being good.

Great, in fact, and if it’s not too early to make such a claim, even a masterpiece. I’d hazard to guess that “Blade Runner 2049” is one of these films.

The “Blade Runner” series is based from the 1968 novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” by Philip K. Dick. It was adapted in 1982 by Ridley Scott into the cult sci-film “Blade Runner.”

Three short films were also recently released to support the release of Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2049,” which stands as the most recent and hopefully the final entry in the franchise.

The world of “Blade Runner” is a hypercapitalist world where the cities are crowded, polluted and filled with huge, invasive advertisements. The upper class has moved off-world, leaving the dying planet as a container for the poor and weak.

A huge corporation (the Tyrell Corporation in “Blade Runner” and the Wallace Corporation in “Blade Runner 2049”) creates what are called “replicants,” synthetically-made humans that are used mostly for off-world slave labor. The series revolves around the ethical questions this premise presents.

“Blade Runner 2049” avoids the sci-fi sequel pitfalls of dithering in the past and takes a blazing step forward, keeping the world much the same while adding far more depth. In terms of scale alone, the sequel is indeed superior to the original, that is if anything can be expected to usurp the classic.

I reiterate, however, that I think this film’s done it: it’s become more of a classic than the classic from whence it came.

I’ll try to avoid giving away plot points because the film is better when you know less. I’d say it’s imperative to watch the original “Blade Runner,” but after that, avoiding info on the sequel until you can see it works to your advantage. I’ll say that the plot is one of the most well-handled things in the film, with a dizzying variety of themes.

I went in (mostly) blind, and the nearlythree-hour film brought me on a cinematic journey I haven’t been on in ages. When the film ended and the credits rolled, it didn’t go away like so many other movies; it stayed in my head for days (it’s still in there and will likely be there for awhile).

By far the most delectable detail of this film is the design: the visuals and the sound.

into the CGI, but none of it’s wasted. The lighting and cinematography also border on mastery.

There’s not a single unconvincing shot in this film; every frame could be hung on a wall. It’s truly beautiful, and is a work of art in that right alone.

There’s also the score, composed in part by the famous Hans Zimmer. It’s subtle and in the background for the majority of the film, but at times it rises to ear-shattering volumes in the form of incessant blasts of noise from what sounds like a symphony of synthesizers.

While none of it stands out particularly well in memory, the film would have been far worse without it. It serves as a perfect complement. The loud moments typically coincide with extremely intense points in the film.

The synth-blast technique isn’t much different from the squealing-violin horror trope, but it’s used rarely and at some points just in establishing shots. For the moments in which it is used in intense and important scenes, however, it tends to drown out the dialogue. This is probably the harshest criticism I can lend the film.

The film stands at nearly three hours, and I can’t see a way in which it could be cut any shorter. Every scene serves its purpose and serves it well. The pacing of the film is so unbelievably slow, and that’s so unbelievably refreshing to see in a sci-fi film. So many of its contemporary counterparts see the genre as an excuse for space battles and high-octane action, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but seeing a film like “Blade Runner” slow down and give us what amounts to a slow movie in a world of countless action possibilities makes the moments of intensity that much more engrossing. I found myself tightly gripping the armrests during all of these scenes.

The cast in the film is also directly onpoint. Ryan Gosling gives a surprisingly emotive performance supported by the equally convincing Ana de Armas and Robin Wright.

Gosling’s character, K, goes through a sprawling rollercoaster of emotions in the film, and Gosling’s ability to display this behind pursed lips and unmoving eyes is nothing short of applause-worthy. Even Dave Bautista has a small role in the film and he performs it admirably.

The film is a work of art, plain and simple.

It’s fair to say that it takes everything that made the original fantastic and turns them all the way up. “Blade Runner 2049” is a triumph, and I fear we may not have many more films like it.

The film has barely made a return in the box office, considered by most to have barely missed “bombing.” Already it’s being yanked from theaters. It’s not so very often that huge Hollywood studios takes chances on sprawling, ambitious pieces like this, and such small return investments are likely to dissuade them even further from taking such chances.

A film that asks as much from its audience as the audience asks from the film isn’t likely to do well, and this is unfortunately exemplified in this movie’s fiscal performance.

It’s on this note that I beg the reader to see this in theaters as soon as they can. We need to do everything we can to show Hollywood the types of movies we’d like to see produced, even if all we can do is buy one ticket. Unless we want a dozen more “Geostorm” clones, we need to support true artistic vision, truly masterful writing: true film.

Circle Cinema hosts authentic horror movie night The Invincible Czars provided a live score for films “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” and “Nosferatu,” creating a night with an air of genuine Halloween spirit.

Brennen Gray Student Writer The Invincible Czars conducted their annual symphony of horror this weekend. The Tulsa’s Circle Cinema showed the silent films “Nosferatu” and “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” with a live band for the music and sound effects.

The Invincible Czars are as quirky and strange as their name. I am unsure if their sense of style was part of a Halloween costume or just what they typically performed in. Making three hours of silent movies interesting was a difficult task. The band worked in forms of humor with their live score and even some audience participation.

“Nosferatu” is an adaptation of the novel “Dracula” that represents the first blockbuster vampire movie ever made. It helped

invent the genre of horror in film. It was not so much scary as deeply uncomfortable, but its ability to manage that with 1920s special effects and censorship was quite the feat.

It’s an all-around classic and probably the most famous movie of its year.

Director F.W. Murnau adapted Bram Stoker’s novel better than many vampire movies, even though the name “Dracula” is replaced with “Count Orlok.” Made in 1922, the film came before much of the modern vampire genre, so many of the vampire tropes were missing. The titular vampire is associated with rats more than bats, and lacks a flowing cape.

Vampires are often very attractive, though Nosferatu was probably the ugliest thing I have ever seen in a movie. The film also invented a vampire trope or two, such as a vampire’s weakness to sunlight.

“Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” lacked any real ability to scare, but featured a little more plot. The tale portrayed a compelling story outside of the monster where Dr. Jekyll and his lover try to preserve their relationship which Mr. Hyde is destroying. Based off of Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel, most view-

ers probably could have given the basics of the plot going into it. The piece slowed down the plot to ask a few questions about the nature of man. Personally, I could have done with “the potion is magic” for an explanation rather than a Victorian era philosophical quandary about man having both a good and evil side. Nonetheless, the film entertained.

While the films were excellent and and music even more entertaining, $18 a ticket for the full double feature is a little much.

Lovers of cinema and film music should go next year. A live score with such iconic films would be a shame to miss for any fan of old movies. But for those just looking for a Halloween weekend adventure, this one may not be for you. Seeing one but not the other knocks the price down to $12, which might be affordable enough to entice a few extra viewers.

The annual event is a great way to go see a scary movie around Halloween for those too weak of stomach for a modern horror.

If you have the money to spend for the full double feature, bring a date and buy some popcorn next year.

The Invincible Czars’ performance was stylistic and humorous, even including participation from the audience.

Jenny Yang’s comedy highlights racial, political themes Comedian Jenny Yang visited TU to give an hour-long set featuring race, politics and even boba tea jokes.

Kayleigh Thesenvitz Editor-in-Chief “I just wanted to say fingerblast in a university that was founded by Presbyterians,” said Comedian Jenny Yang while doing stand-up for a crowd of 60 to 70 students in the Great Hall of the Student Union Wednesday, October 25.

Yang’s comedy touched on a range of topics such as race in America, love, body positivity, the political and social struggles of being Asian American, feminism, sex and boba tea.

Yang opened the show in Mandarin, attempting to gain audience participation in a free-style Chinese rap. As only three students in the audience said they spoke the language, the opening was intentionally designed to cause and release the awkward tension that always surrounds the beginning of a stand up act.

To get to know the audience she did a nationality/ethnicity roll-call. After shouting out to Malaysians, Taiwanese, Vietnamese, Cambodians, Laotians, Burmese, Sri Lankans, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Indians, Native Hawaiians, Native Alaskans, Koreans, Japanese, Chinese, Latinos, African Americans, Native Americans, Middle Easterners and mixed ethnicities, a process which took a solid five minutes, wrapped it up with a joke.

“Who are we missing? Who are we missing?” she pretended to contemplate. “White people! Oh, that’s right! Okay, yeah, huh, it just occured to me. I’m sorry. Left you as an afterthought.”

“Now you know how we feel!” she exclaimed to laughter and applause with a silent tension from some white audience members who were turned off by the joke.

“Do you like how that one roll-call took up literally ten minutes of the show?” Yang said. “That’s how invested I am in that joke.”

She talked for awhile about statistics she has learned about TU and comparisons between our tiny school and her alma mater, Swarthmore College, a private school in Pennsylvania with an undergrad total of 1,500 students. Among those comparisons were the average nerdiness of the students and whether Captain Cane was better or worse than Phineas the Phoenix.

She opened her next topic saying “clap it up if you’re in love,” and then noted a “three micro-second hesitation,” which she thought was nice because it was real. Unlike how Hollywood portrays love, Yang said, “It’s good to connect the head, the heart and the head.”

Talking over the laughter she commended the crowd on for being sensible.

“For a long time I was almost like a professional dater,” Yang said. “When I got on that online dating, I hit it hard … I hit the online dating hard, not much else.”

She lambasted Tinder for being too casual and making people more judgemental.

“Swipe right on their photo if you think they’re hot, swipe left if you think they’re not. Hot or not, as if dating wasn’t already a game enough,” she said.

“No, no, no, no, no,” she said pantomiming swiping on her phone. “I was able to blow through thousands of local men … Not literally,” Yang said to mounting laughter.

“If half of the men that I said no to on Tinder showed up at my doorstep with homemade Mac & Cheese and a password for HBO GO, they’d be in,” Yang said.

“Are we on board yet white people?” she continued.

She segued into the demographics of TU, a fact which even the mention of caused a wave of giggles.

She noted being excited to talk to TU’s Asian students, and while she remembered there being an acceptable number of international students from Asian countries, she wanted to meet the domestic Asian-American students, because she was raised in the US. “They gave me the statistic, ‘All domestic people of color, .5 percent,’” she said, groaning in frustration at the end.

She asked to meet with the domestic Asians and was told, “oh, you mean like the three or four, you can meet all of them in one minute.”

Yang described growing up in a suburb of Los Angeles that was so non-white she didn’t know stereotypes about Asians held by white people.

She talked about “learning whiteness as a second language” when she first went to Swarthmore. Apparently this included lunchables, tater-tot hotdish, tuna casserole, tevas and L.L. Bean.

“When I got to Swarthmore College, I got super militant,” Yang said. “I thought I was the second coming of Asian Malcolm X.” Junior year at Swarthmore apparently one out of three students study abroad. When her professor asked Yang why she wasn’t she said “Bitch, I am abroad.” A joke that was doubtfully true but still drew uproarious laughter.

“I was born in Taiwan. I came to this country when I was five years old. I’m still trying to figure this shit out every day!” she said.

“I like to shout out to political Asians because America has this view like ya’ll don’t think political Asians exist,” Yang said, condemning Americans on the idea that Asians don’t have political views or a desire to voice them.

“Here’s the thing though, as a political Asian, we do not have a unifying language, nor a good unifying chant,” Yang lamented.

She admitted to being jealous of the Chicanx and their “dope” and “militant” chants.

“As a political Asian, we don’t have a comparably dope chant.”

When it came to feminism Yang said, “but don’t get me wrong. I don’t want equality. I want to oppress men.” She won wide laughter and clapping from the ladies in the room.

She joked about how tampons are currently charged as a luxury item.

By far the best joke of the evening started out as a question to the audience about whether or not they have been “so horny … so turned on … that you’re just like ‘Ohhh, I’m going to give myself carpal tunnel.’”

She then made quick up and down motions with her right hand while moaning the words “and you have the laptop open … [moans] … and you got a live stream going … [warbling] … and it’s the Facebook live of the NBC affiliate in Atlanta, Georgia, and they’re tearing down the confederate statue of Robert E. Lee.” The laughter after this particular joke continued well into the start of the next joke.

Yang concluded with a freestyle rap about boba tea and then went into a Q&A for those who wanted to stay where she discussed her work with “Angry Asian Man,” experiences as an Asian and as a woman in comedy, and the barriers to political action of Asian-Americans.

I enjoyed the political edge, but I may be biased in favor of liberal political humor.

Overall, her comedy can resonate with college students regardless of political leaning.

I now consider myself a fan of Jenny Yang.

“Streets� an impressive gallery with subtext TU professor Mark Lewis’s gallery has been running all month, but context provided by his daughter makes the exhibit even more meaningful.

Cheyanne Wheat Student Writer 108 Contemporary is located across the street from Guthrie Green on Boston and Brady. This month from October 6 to November 18, they are showcasing one of TU’s very profound art professor’s gallery containing about 20 different pieces. Mark Lewis’s gallery is titled “Streets.� Within his artwork, he highlights several street corners both bustling and quaint.

Fortunately, I visited this exhibit with Lewis’s daughter Isabella. I heard her

memories, opinions and contributions to her father’s art. Although she didn’t personally work on any of the pieces, she is a key element to his creative process. I learned there is a generous number of hidden gems and truly every single lid, paper and rope had significance within their family. As art enthusiasts, we merely see a various items placed eloquently and thoughtfully on wood or cloth.

The first piece we encountered was a grayscale collage called “Porch (Mt. Gretna).� It was an isometric view of a porch that Isabella is actually featured within. As a viewer, I admired the skill of the artist but never thought about the depth of the painting. Isabella shared that this was a place they visited during a family vacation to Mt. Gretna, Pennsylvania.

Lewis had two self portrait pieces: one made up of old paint rags and the other of dried paint dollops. They are crafted togeth-

er and stacked in such a way to appear as if his face is sitting in the frame.

There were several large collages within the “Streets� collection. One of my favorites was painted, stacked and quilted onto a drop cloth. “Scene (Street Fiction)� is a powerful piece. It grabbed my attention like none of the others. It featured several people and two dogs within a street setting. Isabella shared that many of her own clothes, shoes and crafts went into the creation of “Scene (Street Fiction)� and quickly pointing out her garments. There is a man in the margin of the collage painting a currently black and white street scene which I connected to be the artist.

Throughout the scene, there is various eyes and phrases like “what I see,� “why� and “do you see what I see?� I really enjoyed this element because it reminded me art is the particular lens the artist sees through. It really spoke to me.

On the other side of the exhibit, Lewis’s collection of watercolor painting brings a whole other dimension to the table. These focused particularly on people. Demonstrating the relationship between people when passing them in a farmers’ market. Isabella mentioned these watercolor and paintings are based off the local farmers’ market on Cherry Street. That Tulsa charm was a sweet touch.

As I walked into this exhibit, I was slapped in the face by color. I immediately smiled because many local artists don’t quite manipulate colors so generously. Lewis’s skill is impeccable, and the small personal details really drove this exhibit home for me. This exhibit would have only been a collection of beautiful art. However, Isabella’s commentary created an experience that is valuable in understanding why artists do what they love.

Young Christian couple marries for love, not sex, they swear Jericho Offer and Virginia Panna explain the true reason they’re in such a hurry to get married.

Justin Guglielmetti Isn’t getting married soon Citing their abiding love for one another, desire to start a family together and the unquenchable fire in their loins, local 20-yearolds Jericho Offer and Virginia Panna announced their engagement in front of family and friends last Sunday.

“Obviously, I’m excited,” Offer breathlessly told reporters on the scene. “This was the biggest moment of my life. I mean, I’ve been big before, but never quite to this extent. I actually got lightheaded!”

Offer’s parents could not have been more pleased with the situation. “They’ve been dating for quite some time now, a fair bit longer than the missus and myself” revealed his father Jack, a local reverend. “I knew it was only a matter of time before he popped the question but I’m just glad he did it the good old-fashioned way. Down on one knee, contrite, presented her with the key to her chastity belt. Just like his pops taught him!”

The couple had been seeing each other for two months, after meeting at a religious retreat near the start of the school year. Listening to them tell their story, it is apparent they had an instant chemistry.

“We were discussing good books after Bible study one afternoon, and we decided to play a little game,” Panna says, recounting their first conversation with a twinkle in her eye. “Counted down from three and said our favorite book at the same time. And wouldn’t you know it? Both of us, Song of Solomon!”

Offer tells a slightly different tale, no less romantic. “Her boobs, you should have seen them. Bigger than any I had ever seen in person before and not even saggy.”

Still, it was a few weeks before Offer and Panna made the leap and graduated from the friend zone. Reports from fellow students recount the two spending their first days together in a completely platonic fashion, taking walks through the park on weekends and watching Netflix at night with only the occasional ass slap in between.

“At first we were just good friends, but something more was building up for quite some time,” says Panna. “I remember the night when everything changed like it was

yesterday, which of course it basically was.

We were sitting in my dorm room on a Friday night, having one of those really deep conversations about the big questions in life.

Missionary, doggy, reverse cowgirl, stuff like that.”

“Then I interrupted her by placing my finger ever so gently on her lips,” Offer continues with a chuckle. “I said, ‘what are we doing here? Let’s just stop beating around the bush and go right at it instead.’”

“No I don’t think this is too young!” blustered the elder Offer angrily at suggestions from reporters that the young couple was moving too quickly. “Do you know how old Mary was when she had Jesus? I think it was like 14 years old. If anything, people have been waiting too long to get married nowadays.”

His son and soon to be daughter-in-law are in agreement. “Why should we wait to get married when we know we love each other? I love everything about Virginia. I love her hair, her eyes, her mouth, her chestto-waist ratio, everything. Talk about the total package,” the younger Offer said.

“He jumped really high when we were playing volleyball this one time and think I saw that he has abs,” Panna adds. “Who

wouldn’t love that?” Neither she nor Offer had anything to say when asked about each other’s personality.

Unsurprisingly, the pair has fielded plenty of questions about the elephant in the room: sex. This reporter asked them as much in an exclusive sitdown following the proposal.

Offer, who hastily slammed his laptop shut as I reentered the kitchen from a quick bathroom break, was flushed with unexpected anger as he answered.

“Of course this isn’t just about sex!

There’s so much more to a relationship than that. Besides, it’s a sin to do that outside of the purpose of procreation anyway! We don’t need sex to be happy. It’s going to be me, Virginia and our 15 kids, we’re going to be perfectly fulfilled without the devil’s pilates.”

“Yeah that’s ridiculous to suggest that we are just getting married to have sex,” agreed Panna. To be honest I’m a little nervous about it. I mean the anal has been fantastic so far but who knows what things will be like when we take it all the way?”

The date for the wedding has yet to be set but sources indicate that it will be “as soon as humanly possible.”

Campo detains student trying to throw himself in front of university golf cart A student is being held in McFarlin tower after attempting to get hit by a university golf cart to avoid tuition.

Sara Serrano Wants #FreeNikolaev trending Campus police has issued an official warning to the TU student population after detaining Junior Luka Nikolaev for attempting to throw himself in front of a university golf cart early Wednesday morning.

“We were just a couple feet from this kid when he jumps in front of us.” said Debra Jennings, the cart driver. “I slammed on the brakes and managed only to tap him, but he fell over anyway and started throwing a fit, cursing and yelling about his leg being broken.”

Nikolaev was not injured in the incident.

“This is the second time Mr. Nikolaev has stepped in front of a cart. At first, we believed him when he said it was an accident, but that excuse just didn’t hold up this time around.” said a campus police officer. “He’s now being held until proper charges can be filed against him and so that he does not attempt this again. We would like to warn all students that this type of behavior will not be tolerated.”

Nikolaev could not be reached directly for comment, as he is being held in a secret prison cell in the tower of McFarlin Library,

but we were able to bribe the jailer to sneak out some covert messages from him so that he may tell his story.

Nikolaev writes the following in regards to his motive: “It all started when every single one of my internship applications for this past summer were rejected. I’m a business major, so in an effort to add an impressive bullet point to my resume, something to make those companies more interested in me, I invested in this natural plant-based supplements company that one of my buddies told me about. At the time, I thought the business model was ingenious, building off of an ever expanding base of salesmen to deliver exponential profits upwards. I got really into it, but next thing I know, it all tanked and I was left broke. I had no idea how I was going to pay for my next semester here. Then I heard that if you get run over by a university golf cart, TU will give you a full ride so you don’t sue them.”

Sources cannot substantiate this claim.

“I was a desperate man, so I tried it.

Twice. Now here I am, writing secret letters in this tall tower and I don’t know if I’ll ever get out. Tell David that I love him.”

We don’t know who David is, but Luka sends his love.

Campo has notified those driving around campus in golf carts to be on the lookout for people trying to cash in on this rumor. There is yet no word on when or if Nikolaev will ever be released.
