Senator Rachel Siewert and Dr Robert Isaacs Two new Patrons of Tuart Place were announced at our mid-year gathering on 15th July 15, where FACT Chairperson Ron Love welcomed aboard Senator Rachel Siewert and Dr Robert Isaacs OAM JP PhD.

Dr Isaacs, an Aboriginal Elder, ex-resident of Clontarf, and a 2015 Western Australian of the Year, was overseas at the time of the event, and will be formally welcomed at a function later this year.

Senator Siewert, a longstanding supporter and advocate for Tuart Place, was present at the event and accepted a Certificate of Appreciation from Ron Love.

Rachel and Robert join FACT’s inaugural Patron, Steve Irons MP, as co-Patrons of Tuart Place.

Tuart Place Social Activities Group: Fantastic Fundraisers!

Members of the Tuart Place Social Activities Group (affectionately known as SAG) continue to have great success with their fundraising Sausage Sizzles at Bunnings in O’Connor.

The group made over $1,000 profit at the February 2015 Sizzle, and used the proceeds to fund a weekend away at Moore River (see article by Ann McVeigh on page 14).

The next two Sausage Sizzles will be at Bunnings O’Connor (corner of South & Harrick Streets) on Sunday 6th September, and Saturday 28th November, 2015.

Volunteers are needed to help out at these Sausage Sizzles.

Tuart Place is the State Government funded service for former child migrants and Forgotten Australians in WA. Tuart Place provides individual counselling, support groups, social activities, volunteering opportunities, computer skills classes, visiting health services, family tracing, assistance to access records, and help in dealing with other agencies.

Do you receive Ron’s Gazette?

Ron’s Gazette is a fantastic monthly newsletter created

by Tuart Place participant Ron Love.

The Gazette is published in hard copy for inhouse circulation and is sent by e-mail to more than 200 recipients across Australia. Ron’s Gazette is also available on the Tuart Place website.

If you would like to receive Ron’s Gazette by e-mail each month, please ask Vicky to add you to the distribution list.

Computers with Kathy If you’d like to get more ‘tech savvy’ with your computer or mobile phone, why not call in and see Kathy at our Computer Lab on a Thursday afternoon?

Kathy can also help you with things like scanning photos and documents, using Skype, printing photos taken with a phone, and many other IT and computer skills.

Either call ahead to set up a time with Kathy, or just come in to Tuart Place any Thursday between 12 Tuart Place Program Officer noon and 3.00pm.

The LOFA Study: An Invitation to Care Leavers Forgotten Australians, Former Child Migrants, and Members of the Stolen Generations The LOFA project is studying the long-term outcomes of people who were in out-of-home care during childhood (care leavers).

This important research is funded by the Australian Research Council and wants to hear from adult survivors of Australian childhood institutions or foster care, who left care during the period 1930-1989.

The researchers want to learn about their experiences in care and what life is like for them now.

It is important that care leavers’ voices are listened to and heard, in order to understand the experiences and positive and negative life outcomes of out-of-home care.

The research will fill gaps in knowledge about people who lived in care during the last century in Australia and assist in providing a knowledge base for developing responsive services for this population.

LOFA Researcher at Tuart Place, September 23-24

A LOFA researcher will be at Tuart Place on Wednesday September 23 (after the support group meeting) and on Thursday Sept 24.

You are invited to participate in a focus group or individual interview at Tuart Place on one of these days.

Terry Humphreys: Making a difference Terry Humphreys is a former child migrant and ex-resident of Bindoon. He is also the younger brother of the late Laurie Humphreys, Founder of Tuart Place and its governing body, Forgotten Australians Coming Together (FACT) Inc. After receiving financial settlements in relation to his time at Bindoon, Terry said he wanted to establish an annual Award to recognise major contributions by volunteers at Tuart Place. The Terry Humphreys Award will be accompanied by $250 cash and a framed certificate presented to each year’s recipient.

Health permitting, we are hoping Terry will present the inaugural Terry Humphreys Award at the 2015 end-ofyear gathering.

In a further surprise, Terry also advised us that he has named Tuart Place as a beneficiary in his Will, and would like to encourage others to do the same – hence this story in the Tuart Times.

Tuart Place would like to thank Terry for his very kind gestures, which also included donations to the Monday Community Lunch fund, and the day-today operation of Tuart Place.

Reclaiming my Childhood: David Moir As a child living in Parkerville Children’s Home, I just wanted to grow up so I could leave. I was there for 11 years and I spent them wishing my life away.

As an adult, I was alone and insecure and I really didn’t fit in anywhere. My life just rolled along without any purpose.

When the Redress WA program started, I couldn’t keep all my feelings locked away any more and I was in a bad way. Thankfully I found my way to Tuart Place where I joined the Support Group and met others who had been through similar experiences to mine. I started to realise that I wasn’t to blame and that my feelings were normal. That was over four years ago now and I’ve been coming to Tuart Place most days that it’s open, since then.

The support here has been tremendous, to the point where I could go through a complaints process which ended up with me having a two-hour meeting and face-to-face apology from three senior representatives of the Anglican Diocese and Parkerville Children and Youth Care.

At last I felt believed by those in authority and that they were genuinely sorry for what had happened. I came away feeling good and more at peace within myself. They also gave me a written apology and I re-read that if I feel a bit low.

At that apology meeting, I was invited to go back to Parkerville (as many times as I want to) and although it took me several months to pluck up courage, I knew that Susy would come with me for support. I couldn’t have gone there by myself because of all the traumatic memories it triggered.

On the day, Susy picked me up and we drove up into the hills of Parkerville with me feeling more and more nervous as we got closer. It was nearly fifty years since I’d left 4 there. We were met by a friendly staff member, Tess, who

gave us the key to the chapel and said we could walk around the grounds for as long as I wanted to.

It all seemed so much smaller than when I was there.

I was able to go into the cottages where we used to live and I even saw the same old Metters stove that I cooked porridge on for a couple of years when I was about 12. That meant getting up at 4am to light the stove and God help us if we ever burnt it!

As I walked around the grounds I saw some of the same trees I remembered playing around, and the same hiding places I used to crawl into to avoid the beatings. I think things have changed for the better now as we talked to some of the current staff members who genuinely seem to want to help the children and young people they were working with.

I spent three hours there looking and remembering and showing things to Susy. I’m going to go back to look at their photo collection and spend a bit more time there too.

I am so glad that I had this opportunity to revisit my childhood home. It was an emotional day but one that has helped to get rid of a few more of my ‘demons.’

Discover the Heritage Trail at Clontarf

Clontarf Heritage Trail Inaugural Tour: Sunday 4th October 2015, 10.30am - 1.00 pm The Clontarf Old Boys Heritage Trail is the result of many years’ work by a dedicated group of Old Boys and supporters.

This group formed the Clontarf Old Boys Heritage Committee and set about raising funds and planning various projects at the Clontarf site. Money was raised by operating a raffle stall at the Farmers Markets held at Clontarf on Saturday mornings.

Clontarf Orphanage was a childhood home to a number of Committee members, and they were determined to create a lasting record of its unique history.

The Committee negotiated with the Indigenous Land Corporation, the Christian Brothers, and other stakeholders to plan and establish the Heritage Trail.

Presentation to Catherine Plowman Catherine Plowman was presented with a framed photograph of the child migrant monument at the Grand Harbour’s Pinto Wharf in Malta, in honour of her late husband Professor David Plowman, former Chairman of the Child Migrants of Malta.

The monument was inaugurated in 2008 in honour of the 310 Maltese Child Migrants who were sent to Australia in the 1950’s and 1960’s.

Honouring Swan Orphanage Boys who Went to War A memorial board, created in the 1920s in honour of 127 residents of Swan Boys Orphanage who served in the First World War, has been restored by Swanleigh with funding provided by Lotterywest.

Archivist Lara Lynch said that Swanleigh staff immediately saw the opportunity to have the board restored when Lotterywest called for grants relating to the Anzac Centenary, which were designed to provide the community with an opportunity to remember the Work in progress contribution of all Australian service personnel.

The board was originally carved by Mr Malraisen, a member of staff at Swan Boys Orphanage, with the assistance of boys who were learning woodwork under his tutelage.

There are 127 names on the Board, with 12 boys

marked as having died in service. During research it was discovered that 20 boys actually died overseas in active service, six boys enlisted but were discharged before active service, one boy was found to have gone but had not been listed, and two boys went to both WWI and WWII.

Lara said the Swan Orphanage Industrial conservation process School for Protestant Boys, 1900 was conducted on-site because board was too large and heavy to remove – needing three men to lift it. It now holds pride of place in the foyer of Waylen House, the administrative section of Swanleigh, and it is the first thing you notice upon entering the main building.

A Prayer for Mary by Dilys Budd I recently heard from my friend in Perth, Marie Miller, that our dear friend for over 60 years, Mary Smith, has had a setback while recovering from her illness.

Mary and I came out on the same boat to Australia in 1947 and in the last 68 years we have never lost touch.

In fact, most of the girls who were sent to St Joseph’s Orphanage as migrants have remained close and supportive of each other.

A few of us left Perth and settled in other states.

However, Mary stayed and became the main contact for us all. Over the years I have come to think of her as our Matriarch.

Mary, when well, is a staunch friend and supporter of any of the girls and their families in need - she has a large family of her own and of course they come first - but it never stopped her visiting any of the girls who were having difficulties.

Mary’s and Brian’s home was open with a welcome mat for those who needed help. This included offering a meal (often with a cup of tea and homemade bread), a comfortable bed and even a loan of the family car and many other acts of kindness, too numerous to mention.

The word ‘supportive’ doesn’t come close to describing Mary.

I also want to mention that Mary couldn’t have done all this without the support of her loving husband Brian.

My hope is that Mary and Brian can stay together, with help, during this difficult time – Mary in the home she loves along

Noel Brenzi’s Polenta Recipe 6 cups water 2 cups buckwheat 2 cups cornmeal 1 medium potato 125g mature cheese 100g butter Put water in a stainless steel pot.

Add 1 medium peeled potato cut into thin slices, cook until soft.

Add buckwheat and cornmeal to water.

Stir slowly with wooden spatula on low heat for 1 hour.

Stir continuously. When cooked it will not stick to the spoon.

When cooked, add 125g mature cheese in small thin slices and stir.

Add 100g butter and mix in.

Shake around. Serve with spaghetti sauce.

Recipe can be halved if necessary.

Serve with 2 glasses of red wine.

Congratulations Tyson

by Kathy Bel-Bachir Well done Tyson Keaton, on achieving your AFL National Coaching Accreditation, Level 1.

The course involved classroom learning, practical hands-on coaching time, as well as the completion of a three-hour online assessment.

Tyson said that at first he was a bit daunted by the online part of the course because he didn’t have a computer to use at home.

Tyson’s sister encouraged him to attend the Thursday Computer Help Sessions at Tuart Place, where Tyson was able to receive the individual help he needed to complete his course.

Money Matters

Earlier this year we welcomed three friendly counsellors to Tuart Place for ‘Money Matters’ - a free information session on financial issues. Antonio and Lauren came from the Fremantle Community Legal Centre, where Antonio works as an advocate with Centrelink problems and Lauren specialises in housing issues. This sparked a lively discussion among audience members! Lee-Ann came from FCAWA (Financial Counsellors Association of WA), the body that oversees all financial counsellors in WA, and provides a free confidential Helpline service (Phone 1800-007-007).

Before the session started we all watched a recording of Pip White and Jenny Aldrick giving evidence at the Royal Commission in Sydney. Pip was actually questioned by one of the Commissioners about her opinion on the value of financial counselling and she stressed the importance of lowcost, independent financial counselling options - just the kind of service provided by the Financial Counsellors Association.

Unfortunately - 3 months later - the State Government announced that it would stop funding face-to-face financial counselling services in Perth from October 1st 2015, and regional

services from 2016.

Announcement of the cuts caused much distress, but there was some good news among the bad: both the Cities of Fremantle and Cockburn voted to pick up the tab to keep their financial counselling services running for the time being.

Furthermore, in early August, the State Government announced a re-think on the cuts, and funding has now been reinstated for metropolitan financial counselling services. This is great news!

Antonio and Lauren, who spoke with us at Tuart Place in March, continue in their roles as advocates

for issues concerning Centrelink or housing, because their positions are funded from other sources.

If you are on a low income and live in one of the suburbs of Fremantle and Cockburn you can phone the Fremantle Community Legal Centre on 9432 9790 or City of Cockburn 9411 3850 to enquire about your eligibility for their services. Residents elsewhere can search for assistance via the website www.financialcounsellors.org, and type in the name of your suburb.

A Tribute to Ron Love By Cevrina, Wayne, Daniel and Ray Many people admire Ron Love and the huge amount he gives to Tuart Place. A few of us put pen to paper recently and wrote down how we felt about Ron.

Wayne: “Many days have gone by since 1958/59, when I first met a wonderful person called Ron Love. When I first walked into Tuart Place and was heartily greeted by Ron, it was like we had only been days apart. Since that day I have watched with interest how Ron is always there and available to all for a chat or information. Each time he greets me at the door, I feel special. I think he is someone special, he is OUR Ron”.

Daniel: “Ron, thank you for all of the things you do for us. Thank you for writing the history of us here at Tuart Place. Most of all, thank you for just being you”.

Ray: “I would like to thank Ron for all his newsletters.

Ron has and is still helping a lot of people, for example, learning the computer. He has put a lot of his time into Tuart Place. I thank you very much Ron for a good job”.

Cevrina: “Ron gives freely of his time at Tuart Place

and the days he is there, most people would be touched by his quiet, happy and very caring, helpful nature. He will go out of his way to welcome people as they come in to Tuart Place and often walk to the front door to open it for people leaving. He will patiently listen to a person who is not happy with what is happening at the time and does his best to help in a positive way, if it’s possible.

Ron is the Chairman of the Board for Forgotten Australians Coming Together Inc, (FACT), writes the monthly Ron’s Gazette, is passionate in sharing his knowledge about Forgotten Australians to the general public and the Lotto group is happy for Ron’s support – and we all celebrate the occasional win.

Other days he mans a phone at the Samaritans Crisis Line and visits the Men’s Shed to help lift the spirit of others, and more. He is an inspiration to many.”

Tuart Place is extremely fortunate to host visits by KDT, which was founded in 2009 by husband and wife team John and Jan Owen.

Dr John Owen AM is Patron of the Australian Society of Orthodontists, Foundation for Research and Education, and Clinical Associate Professor, School of Primary, Aboriginal and Rural Health Care, UWA. John has been the Honorary Consultant Orthodontist to the Disabilities Services Commission since 1986 and is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists, Academy of Dentistry International and Pierre Fauchard Academy.

Thanks Again KDT! homeopath, and received an Excellence in Volunteer Management Award at the 2015 WA Volunteer of the Year Awards for her work with KDT. In 2014, the Rotary Clubs of Perth and Heirrison held a special celebration to acknowledge KDT’s provision of $1 million worth of dental care over the last five years, and Jan and John Owen were awarded a Rotary International Award for outstanding commitment to the community.

Many people who come to Tuart Place had bad experiences with dentists (or no dental treatment) as children, and have avoided dentists like the plague.

John Owen’s gentle and respectful approach has enabled them to trust that

it is safe to have a check-up and receive feedback about their teeth.

KDT’s next visit to Tuart Place will be in early 2016, and will be open to family members. Further details will be circulated in the ‘What’s On’ flyer.

2015 Annual Get-Together This year’s annual picnic at Waterford is on Sunday 22nd November 2015, from 12 noon to 4.00pm. There’s a free sausage sizzle, and barbecue facilities for those who prefer to bring their own.

Congratulations Brian Tennant Congratulations to Mr Brian Tennant JP, AM, who was awarded the Order of Australia in 2015 for his significant services to the community.

Brian is an Indigenous Australian who lived at Castledare and Sylvia’s Angels: Christmas 2013 Clontarf in his younger years.

A veteran law reform campaigner, Brian is an active member of the national Civil Liberties Group and has worked tirelessly to combat social injustice, particularly in regard to people falsely imprisoned for crimes.

St Joey Girls Gathering

On Saturday 21st March 2015 a few of the St Joey girls got together at Rita Sturnolio’s house for lunch.

The gathering came about as one of the girls was seeking photos of her schooldays. We were able to present her with a disc, which she was happy with.

It was a chance to catch up with Rita who hasn’t been well of late.

The thumbs up was for St Joey memories, both good and bad.

The WA Oral Health Centre: Professional dental services at a fraction of the cost I want to spread the news about the Oral Health Centre in Nedlands: this Centre is staffed by dental students from The University of WA under the supervision of qualified dentists and is the only provider of specialist dental services to public dental patients in WA.

My dentist suggested I contact them because I had a lot of specialist work to do on my teeth and because I have a Health Care Card, he knew the cost would be heavily subsidised.

I phoned them and completed the form (this can be downloaded from their website as well: http://www. dentistry.uwa.edu.au/clinic) and six weeks later got a letter informing me that I was now top of the waiting list.

Once I had verified my income with a statement from Centrelink, I was sent an appointment time and the name of the dental student who would look after me.

The students are on placement for three months: in this time, I

by David Moir went weekly and sometimes twice a week and had two extractions, 10 fillings, front teeth (damaged in an industrial accident) newly capped and an impression taken for a plate – as well as thorough clean and scale by dental hygienist students from Curtin University. Not surprisingly, most of my appointments were several hours long.

A huge amount of work was done within the three month period. Had I completed this work with my private dentist it would have cost me almost $8,000. With my Health Care subsidy, I paid $800 in total, just 10% of the full cost.

I have some further work to be done and after that will be called in twice a year for check-ups. I’m really thrilled with my experience at the Oral Health Centre - the quality of their work, the generous financial subsidy and the attitudes of the staff. I’m always apprehensive when going to the dentist,

but my student dentist was keen, skilled and caring, constantly checking with me that I was OK.

Sharing Stories: Margo O’Byrne Margo O’Byrne is a Forgotten Australian who grew up in Queensland and now lives with her husband Eitan Friedman in Fremantle, WA.

Margo works as a consultant facilitator, is a contributing author to ‘Community Voices’ published by UWA Press, Australia (2006) and for many years edited ‘Ecoplan News’ (Department of Environmental Protection).

Margo’s memoire, ‘Left Unsaid’ was published in 2009 and launched at the Ubud Writers Festival. ‘Left Unsaid’ is a powerful story of two siblings, Margo and her brother Micko, who stick together through the loss of their father, their mother’s alcoholism, an orphanage and boarding schools.

We would like to thank Margo for presenting an inspirational talk at Tuart Place in May this year on the process of writing her story. It was a lively, interactive session, with lots of questions from people also thinking about writing about their childhoods and personal experiences.

Thanks also to Margo for donating copies of her book, which is available free of charge to Tuart Place participants. For noncare leavers the cost is a $10 donation to Tuart Place.

Royal Commission News Tuart Place invited to speak at Consultation on Redress Following the submission of a response by Tuart Place to the Royal Commission’s Consultation Paper on Redress and Civil Litigation (January 2015), Tuart Place was invited to send two representatives to speak at a public hearing of the Royal Commission held in Sydney from 25-27th March 2015.

Jenny Aldrick (Vice-Chairperson of Forgotten Australians Coming Together Inc) and Dr Philippa White (Director of Tuart Place) accepted the invitation, and both spoke at the Sydney hearing on 26th March.

Northern Ireland Inquiry Extended by 12 Months Sir Anthony Hart, Chairman of the Northern Ireland Historical Institutional Abuse Inquiry, met with Government Ministers in April 2014 to seek an extension of one year to the date by which the Inquiry must submit its report.

Sir Anthony’s request was subsequently granted in January 2015 and, therefore, under its amended Terms of Reference, the Inquiry is required to complete its hearings and all investigative work by mid-summer 2016, and has to submit its report to the Northern Ireland Executive by 17 January 2017.

Hilly: A Man with a Mission (Article courtesy of Ron’s Gazette) Gordon (Hilly) Hill was determined to drive himself, at his own expense, to the Royal Commission’s first public hearing held in Ballarat, Victoria, where he gave evidence in May this year.

It was important to Hilly to tell his truth at the hearing, and to do so on his own terms.

When the time came, Hilly spoke powerfully and courageously about harrowing experiences of childhood abuse at a Ballarat orphanage.

Hilly was applauded by a large crowd of participants on his first visit to Tuart Place after returning to WA, and people were keen to offer him their congratulations.

Speaking at the Royal Commission would not have been easy Hilly, and your courage in doing so has inspired others to come forward and talk about the painful past.

Royal Commission Support at Tuart Place Casey Hill has been employed by Anglicare and based at Tuart Place in the role of Royal Commission Community Support Service Counsellor/Community Development since April this year.

Casey’s role includes providing information and support for anyone thinking about engaging with the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, anyone who is in the process of engaging with the Royal Commission, and anyone who has already engaged with the Royal Commission. Participants at Tuart Place have also seen Casey for supportive counselling, assistance with complaints processes and advocacy.

Casey has worked as a Counsellor, Group Facilitator and Senior Therapist at Fremantle Women’s Health Centre, Gosnells Women’s Health Service and FPWA in Western 10

Australia. Casey worked as Team Leader in Family Dispute Resolution and Mediation at Ringwood Family Relationship Centre in Ringwood, Victoria. She has also worked as a Counsellor in private practice in St Kilda, Victoria.

In Casey’s younger years she worked as a Youth Worker with at risk young people with SMYL Community Services.

Casey has a Bachelor of Jurisprudence, is an accredited psychotherapist, an accredited dispute resolution practitioner, has a Post-Graduate Diploma in Counselling and is in her second last unit of the Master of Counselling.

Financial Counselling by Jan Newman People receiving ‘ex-gratia’ lump-sum payments from past providers of institutional care are strongly encouraged to seek their own independent financial advice.

Although ex-gratia payments are not considered taxable income, the money you receive may affect your eligibility for Homeswest accommodation, and/or the level of benefits you receive from Centrelink. New ‘deeming’ rules affecting the age pension were introduced by the Federal Government on 1st July 2014, while tougher assettesting limits came into effect on 1st January 2015.

WA (FCAWA) offers free, confidential and independent information, and advocacy to help people take control of their own financial situation. Financial counsellors can also help you to identify payments and/or concessions you may not be receiving, for which you may be eligible.

Educating Future Social Workers by Susy Vaughan For the third year in a row, Tuart Place participants have been invited by Dr Sue Bailey (Course Coordinator) to talk to Social Work students at the University of WA as part of their ‘Social Work Knowledge, Theory and Values’ unit.

Sue is a longstanding supporter of Tuart Place, and wants her students to learn about issues affecting people who grew up in out-of-home care, and hear the perspectives of those who have received the services of social workers.

At this year’s presentation, Cevrina, Sylvia and Ron spoke to a group of 50 student social workers, and gave their views on how best to build rapport, show respect, and encourage disclosure when working with ‘Forgotten Australians’.

Cevrina, Sylvia and Ron drew on personal experiences and powerful examples to show how ‘professional helpers’ can use the way they dress, the way they arrange their offices, the way they take notes or ask questions in ways that can either encourage or discourage feelings of trust, comfort and safety on the part of the ‘client’.

The student social workers showed their interest by asking lots of questions and their appreciation was summed up by one student, who said: “Thank you so much for coming and sharing your stories with us. I know that I will do things differently now and be a better social worker when I graduate.”

Monica Dalton, beloved wife of Tony, passed away suddenly in April this year.

Approximately 200 people attended Monica’s funeral, and their support was a great comfort to Tony and family. Tony would like to thank Br Hanley and the Clontarf and Tardun Old Boys who attended the funeral.

Tony and Monica’s three children, Johanna, Robert and Erica, and granddaughter Nakita gave eulogies at the service, which was held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Wilson.

Our sincere condolences to Tony and family.

Geoffrey Gray was born in Hampstead London, and was admitted to Nazareth House Ditton when he was five years old. Geoff was sent to Australia as a child migrant aboard the ‘Asturius’ in 1947, and was placed at Clontarf, where he remained until 1955.

After briefly training as a Brother in Melbourne, Geoff returned to Perth and worked as a clerk until 1960, when he applied for teacher training in Papua New Guinea. Geoff spent the best part of 10 years teaching in small schools in the highlands of New Guinea.

Thank you to Bob Taylor of Queensland for informing us of the death of Jimmy Fairley. Bob wrote:

Jimmy Fairley passed away on the 24-10-2014 in the northern town of Ingham in Queensland.

Brothers Jimmy and Jackie came to Australia from the England in May 1950 on the same ship as me, the SS Otranto, and we were sent to Boys’ Town Bindoon along with ten other boys. It was during the Bindoon days we became friends, then left for the outside world and lost all contact.

Geoff then turned his hand to industrial relations, firstly in PNG, and then back in Australia, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts degree.

In later life, Geoff developed Parkinsons Disease, to which he eventually succumbed in 2015.

Geoff was cared for by his great friend Allan Padgett, who made sure that Geoff’s quality of life was as joyful as possible right to the end.

Geoff was a committed and passionate advocate for others and he is greatly missed by those who knew him.

For a number of years I have tried locating both men and found them living in Queensland; Jackie in Brisbane and Jimmy in Ingham, about 250km away from where I live in Tolga on the Atherton Tablelands.

Unfortunately, it was too late for me to make contact with either of them. It saddens me to learn of another Bindoon boy passed. If only I had known he was just down the road from me.

Fremantle Social Worker ‘Leading the Way’ at State Awards PERTH- 9TH JUNE 2015 – LOCAL Social Worker Dr Philippa White has been honoured for her leadership at the 2015 WA Social Worker of the Year Awards, the sixth annual state-wide awards recognising social workers from across Western Australia.

As the recipient of the ‘Leading the Way’ Award sponsored

by Richmond Wellbeing, Pip was acknowledged for her outstanding leadership as the Director of Tuart Place in Fremantle, and her strong commitment to the empowerment of people who experienced out-of-home care during childhood.

Pip says she was honoured to be a part of the Awards, describing them as an important evening for the social work industry and for social work professionals across WA.

“To me this award is recognition not just of my work, but of the people of Tuart Place, the Forgotten Australians and former child migrants who had incredibly harsh childhoods and with whom I feel honoured to walk alongside,” said Dr. White. “They are the people who lead Tuart Place, and this award is really an acknowledgment of them.”

Nominator Dr Deb Rosser identified Pip as a leader in the area of participant led service, a field often associated with high emotions, strongly voiced beliefs and sometimes

situations of conflict.

“Pip navigates with professionalism and compassion”, said Dr Rosser. “Her approach to leading and supporting staff and participants is to privilege ‘lived experience’ and develop and nurture organisational strategies that continue to enhance Tuart Place as a participant-led service.”

Attended by a wide range of industry professionals, government officials, Award partners, sponsors, family and friends the Awards acknowledged 13 outstanding finalists in five categories and the dedication of the social work industry to making a real difference to the lives of Western

Australians. Pip was a finalist in two of the five categories.

Department of Health Senior Social Worker Fran McGrath was awarded the overall title of WA Social Worker of the Year, recognised for her 40 years of dedication and commitment to social work in the health industry, specifically in the field of neurological disease for the NMHS Mental Health Neurosciences Unit.

The Award ceremony has been held annually since 2009 by partners Curtin University, the University of Western Australia and the Australian Association of Social Workers.

Great Advocacy John!

One day in early April, John Smith sat down next to me, deep into a phone

by Jan conversation.

After a few minutes I realised John was talking to one of the advisors in the Office of the Minister for Housing, the Hon Colin Holt, and was arguing passionately and persuasively on behalf of care-leavers who live in public housing and whose ‘ex-gratia’ payments from past providers might exceed eligible cash limits.

John and I followed up this phone conversation with a letter asking the Minister to consider these payments in the same way as Redress WA, and not be taken into account when assessing eligibility for public housing or rent.

John made the point that at the beginning of his life he was denied the chance for a decent home and now if he were to lose his house as an older person as the result of a justified ex-gratia payment, it would be double the punishment.

John’s letter generated a ‘Ministerial’, and a request was sent Newman from the Minister to the DirectorGeneral of Housing for comment and a few weeks later, John received a phone call from an officer of the Department assuring him that he would not be disadvantaged by receiving such a payment.

Final confirmation arrived on 3rd June 2015 in a letter from the Minister’s Office assuring John that “any exgratia payments received from past providers in recognition of past injustices will be exempt from the Department of Housing’s rent calculation and cash asset tests; it is only the interest earned on these funds that will be treated as assessable income.”

This means that anyone else who lives in public housing and receives a settlement which exceeds the cash limit for their situation can quote this ruling.

A Weekend Away in Moore River Early in 2015, the Social Activity Group suggested a week-end at Tuppin House in Moore River (Guilderton). Some of the Clontarf Old Boys worked out the arrangements, and 25 of us went up for the weekend of April 10-12.

When we arrived on the Friday we were welcomed by Mike and Kevin who showed us our rooms, and once settled in, we were happily surprised to hear that a light lunch had kindly been prepared for us. After lunch folks just went about and enjoyed themselves. About eight of us play Bocce, which was great fun and went on for a couple of hours.

We had fantastic meals during the whole weekend and willing volunteers helped Maureen with cooking and cleaning up.

On the first night we were there some people played UNO and Triominos, others watched footy or played pool and table tennis. Julie and I went for a walk to the local sights. Everyone had a great time socialising and got on very well together. A late night by a few of the guests.

On the Saturday morning Sylvia got her crafts out and once again cards and footy on TV were the entertainment of choice. A couple of cars went out to look

at the lighthouse and surrounds. Four brave folks decided to walk the distance (a couple of kms).

In the afternoon about 14 of us went on a boat trip on the Moore River Inlet for a couple of hours. The tour guide was named Phillip Cook, and knew he was going to get a few jibes re ‘Captain Cook’.

And he did. But his knowledge of the river and its surrounds were a treat to listen to.

He was so good in the telling of the history of the river and naming Guilderton as well.

Everyone had nothing but praise for his commentary. Everyone agreed the price of

On the Saturday evening we had a wonderful roast with all the trimmings and bread and butter pudding with cream for dessert - what a treat!

Before the meal was finished Mike Carroll set up his sound system and had gentle music going whilst tea was on.

Mike had huge praise for Maureen’s efforts in feeding us the whole weekend and the way we were spoiled by having all meals provided. Of course ‘For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow’ was sung with great gusto.

Mike said he was really pleased that everyone got on so well together and another weekend for next year was soon given the nod. A few people even supporting a longer stay. A couple of extra nights could be organised privately if people wanted.

A couple of people spoke of their gratitude for the opportunity to get away for the weekend, make friends and get to know people better.

So in closing I would once again like to thank everyone who attended - a huge thank you for a successful weekend, with new friendships formed. Also a big pat on the back for the Social Activity Group for organising such a successful event.

End of Year Get-together 2015 This year’s annual picnic at Waterford is on Sunday 22nd November 2015, from 12 noon to 4.00pm. There’s a free sausage sizzle, and barbecue facilities for those who prefer to bring their own. Family and friends are welcome.

Making Rainsticks with Sylvia There was lots of fun and laughter at Sylvia’s Rain stickmaking workshop in June this year. The brightly decorated sticks make a soothing sound of softly falling rain.

Gordon Grant: A Distinguished Military Career Gordon Grant, a former child migrant and ex-resident of Bindoon, was 13 years old when he arrived in Australia aboard the ‘Asturius’ in 1947.

At 17, Gordon left Bindoon and found work at Bunnings Bros, then did three months’ basic training for National Service at Swanbourne Military Barracks. Gordon then completed four years in the Citizen Military Force (later re-named the Army Reserve). He served in the 11/44th Infantry Battalion as a bandsman, and was a versatile musician, playing the cornet, French horn, euphonium and tenor/base trombone.

In 1957 Gordon enlisted in the Australian Regular Army, and on completing his Recruit training at Kapooka NSW he was allocated to the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps.

Gordon served with combatant units as a Medical Assistant and overseas as a Medical Advisor.

For the latter ten years of his military career, Gordon held the rank of Warrant Officer 1 Regimental Sergeant Major, and was active in overseas Military service in North Borneo (1964) and twice in Vietnam (1967/68). After returning to Australia and after 26 years’ service, Gordon applied for a discharge from the Army, and turned his hand to new challenges, including advocacy for child migrants and others who had experienced abuse in institutional settings.

recommended twice for the Victoria Cross for his valour in life saving work on active service in North Borneo. Three of Gordon’s Commanding Officers firmly believed that Gordon deserved the VC for his valiant work, however, like many other worthy recommendations, the Victoria Cross was not awarded in this instance.

Gordon had been completely unaware that he was the intended recipient of such a high honour, and the news came as a total surprise. Gordon said that, even though the VC was not awarded, he was delighted to know that his superior Officers had valued his service so highly.

It was so interesting to read what Lilly O’Rourke had written.

I have fond memories of working with Lilly in the kitchen at St Thomas More College in the late 1950s. She was a great workmate, singing merrily as she loaded the huge dishwasher and praying the ice cream truck would be coming.

Lilly always scored a cone from the driver with a joke and a wink. She had a good Irish voice and sang many songs drummed into us by the nuns.”

Free Legal Advice at Tuart Place Legal advice is often described as one of the most useful services that can be offered by a centre such as Tuart Place, and was identified as a ‘Very Important’ area of service delivery in our postal survey of care leavers in 2011.

We are therefore very pleased to advise that Perth-based lawyer Gary Dean is now providing monthly free legal advice sessions at Tuart Place.

Feedback from people using the service indicates that it is most useful to those wanting general advice on their rights, and information on how to access appropriate legal support. Jenny, for example, knew she needed advice on a family matter,

We are very fortunate to have psychotherapist Gordon Paton on board at Tuart Place.

Gordon is a highly experienced psychotherapist, group facilitator and counsellor, and recently retired from the Harry Hunter Drug & Alcohol Residential Rehabilitation Centre, where he worked for 14 years.

Gordon also has qualifications in Organisational and Clinical Transactional Analysis.

Gordon volunteers his time at Tuart Place and is available for individual counselling sessions on Mondays. He also runs workshops and training sessions.

Tuart Place is located in the old Cleo’s Hotel at 24 High Street, in the West End of Fremantle, near the historic Roundhouse.

There is no on-site parking, so some of our visitors park at South Beach and catch the Blue Central Area Transit (CAT) Bus, which stops close by in Phillimore Street, just after Cliff Street.

If you are travelling on foot from Fremantle Train Station, Tuart Place is a five minute walk.
