OFF-CAMPUS

I N S I D E R

Roommate Communication & Navigating Conflict Living with roommates can be a great part of the off-campus experience, but differences in schedules, habits, and expectations can sometimes lead to disagreements. Addressing concerns early and communicating clearly can help keep small issues from becoming bigger conflicts.

COMMUNICATE EARLY If something is bothering you, don’t wait until frustration builds. Talk with your roommate about the issue early and focus on finding a solution that works for everyone.

Try to: •

Choose a time when everyone involved can have a calm conversation.

•

Focus on the specific behavior rather than the person.

•

Explain how the situation affects you.

•

Listen to your roommate’s perspective.

•

Work together on a solution you can both agree to.

Instead of: “You never clean the kitchen.” Try: “I’ve noticed the kitchen has been difficult to keep clean. Could we figure out a cleaning routine that works for both of us?”

Set Clear Expectations & Check-In Regularly A lot of roommate conflict comes from different assumptions about what “normal” apartment living looks like. Setting expectations early and checking in throughout the year can help prevent misunderstandings.

Off-Campus Housing Partners Whether you’re settled in or planning ahead, it’s never too early to learn about local housing options. Check out these communities that have partnered with our office! Learn more about our partners and their amenities on our site at: OFFCAMPUSHOUSING.TTU.EDU

ROOMMATE CHECK-IN QUESTIONS Cleaning: Who cleans what and how often? Guests: How much notice should roommates give each other? Noise: What does quiet time look like? Shared items: What can everyone use, and what should stay personal?

Food: Are groceries shared or separate? Bills: Who pays what, and when? Common spaces: How should shared areas be used and maintained? TIP: You don’t have to agree on everything! The goal is to establish expectations everyone understands.

When You Have a Conflict Disagreements happen, but approaching them respectfully can make them easier to resolve. If a disagreement comes up:

Pause before reacting. Give yourself time to cool down before having a difficult conversation. Address the issue directly. Focus on the specific concern rather than letting frustration build. Look for a compromise. A good solution may not be exactly what either person originally wanted. Follow up. Once you’ve agreed on a solution, check in later to see whether it’s working.

Remember: You don't have to agree on everything to be good roommates. Clear communication and mutual respect go a long way.

Need Additional Support? If you and your roommate are having difficulty resolving an issue on your own, consider reaching out to your property management team. Depending on the situation, they may be able to provide guidance or help connect you with available resources.
