WHAT TO CONSIDER For Solo Travel

SINGLE SUPPLEMENT ON A SAFARI

For solo travelers, the single supplement is an additional fee added to travel packages typically priced for two people sharing the cost. Most accommodations set their pricing based on double occupancy, so when traveling alone, the cost of the unoccupied space is covered by the single supplement fee.

Beyond accommodations, many elements of a safari—such as transfers and private excursions—are priced based on a minimum of two travelers. This is especially true for bush flights and helicopter transfers, which often do not offer waivers on single supplements and can carry an additional cost for solo travelers. That said, there are smart ways to minimize these expenses. With thoughtful planning, solo travelers can still enjoy an extraordinary African adventure without stretching the budget.

WAYS TO SAVE ON A SOLO SAFARI

• Travel During the Green Season – Many luxury lodges waive or reduce the single supplement during the low season (typically between November and May, depending on the destination). This is a fantastic time to visit, with fewer crowds, lush landscapes, and lower prices.

• Choose Lodges That Cater to Solo Travelers – Some safari camps specifically welcome solo travelers and either waive the single supplement or offer rooms designed for one guest at a more affordable rate. For example, luxury Singita lodges waive the single supplement for up to three rooms in the reservation.

• Book Early – Many lodges have a limited number of rooms available without a single supplement, so reserving in advance increases your chances of securing a better rate.

• Join a Small Group Safari – Small group travel often comes with lower single supplements, as some costs, such as transfers and excursions, are shared among travelers. Our Classic Collection of small group journeys offers tours with low or, on select dates, no single supplements.

Working with experienced safari operators ensures the best options for solo travelers. Our consultants will guide you to the ideal itinerary, considering exclusive accommodation specials, your travel dates, and personal preferences.

TRAVEL STYLES

For Solo Travelers

A key decision for solo travelers is whether to explore independently or join a group. Group safaris provide a sense of camaraderie and security, along with a set itinerary that offers structure and convenience. In contrast, a tailor-made safari gives you the flexibility to customize your experience based on your interests. It also offers more solitude and the freedom to explore at your own pace.

At African Travel, we offer three travel styles:

Tailor-made Safaris

INDEPENDENT ADVENTURES

Craft your ideal safari, fully personalized around your interests—from destinations and lodges to activities and timing. Enjoy VIP airport service, private guides, and exclusive experiences throughout. This is the perfect choice for solo travelers seeking flexibility, privacy, and seamless luxury, backed by 24/7 support.

FREQUENTLY

Asked Questions

Q. IS TRAVELING SOLO ON SAFARI SAFE?

A. Yes! Traveling solo with a reputable safari operator is very safe. Top operators specialize in the safest destinations, secure accommodations, organizing logistics, and offering expert local guides. Additionally, 24/7 support is available to ensure a smooth experience.

Q. WILL I BE CHARGED EXTRA FOR TRAVELING ALONE ON A SAFARI?

A. Typically, there’s a single supplement, but many lodges offer discounts or waive this fee during the off-season. Be sure to inquire about this when booking to find the best deals for solo travelers.

Q. ARE THERE ACCOMMODATIONS WITHOUT A SINGLE SUPPLEMENT?

A. Yes, some luxury lodges waive single supplements, particularly during the low season (Green Season). The terms vary, and our safari consultants will be able to advise.

Q. WILL I BE THE ONLY SOLO TRAVELER AT THE LODGE?

A. It’s hard to tell. It depends on the destination, lodge, and season. Some lodges and small group safaris attract more solo travelers, while others cater mainly to couples or families. Our safari consultants can recommend the best options for a social yet comfortable experience.

Q. WILL I HAVE THE CHANCE TO MEET OTHER TRAVELERS ON SAFARI?

A. Absolutely! Game drives typically accommodate up to six people per vehicle, so you’ll have the opportunity to meet other travelers. There are also boma dinners, sundowners, walking safaris and other shared activities, such as photography or cooking classes, providing great chances to connect with fellow adventurers.

Q. W ILL I ALWAYS BE ALONE?

A. Not at all. From the moment you arrive, you’ll be greeted by an African travel representative and enjoy VIP transfers, private tours in cities, and expert-led game drives on safari. You’ll also have the chance to interact with fellow travelers during game drives, shared meals, and activities. Additionally, lodge staff will always be there to ensure your comfort, provide helpful insights, and make sure you feel well cared for and engaged throughout your stay.

Q. AM I BETTER OFF BOOKING A GROUP SAFARI IF I’M TRAVELING ALONE?

A. It really depends on your preferences. Group safaris offer camaraderie and security, with a set itinerary that provides structure and convenience. A tailor-made safari, however, offers more flexibility to tailor the experience to your interests, explore at your own pace, and enjoy solitude. Whatever option you choose, we guarantee you’ll be well taken care of and fully supported every step of the way.

Q. ARE THERE OPPORTUNITIES TO ENGAGE WITH LOCAL COMMUNITIES?

A. Many safari destinations offer cultural excursions where you can visit Maasai villages in Kenya, meet local artisans, or participate in community conservation programs, making your trip both personal and meaningful.

Q. WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO TRAVEL BETWEEN SAFARI DESTINATIONS?

A. Bush flights are usually the most efficient option, maximizing your time on safari. For shorter distances, overland transfers can be a cost-effective alternative, especially when traveling as part of a small group.

Q. I S THERE WI-FI IN SAFARI LODGES?

A. Most luxury lodges have Wi-Fi, though it can be limited or intermittent in remote areas. However, safari is a great opportunity to disconnect and enjoy the natural surroundings.

Q. ARE THERE SOLO-FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES?

A. Yes! Walking safaris in Zambia or gorilla trekking in Rwanda are ideal for solo travelers. These activities often have smaller, more intimate groups, providing a chance to connect with fellow adventurers.

Q. I S THERE A WAY TO CUSTOMIZE MY SOLO SAFARI TO MY INTERESTS?

A. Many safari operators offer tailor-made itineraries that can be adjusted to your specific interests, whether that’s wildlife photography, adventure, or cultural immersion.

Q. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO TRAVEL SOLO TO AFRICA?

A. Africa is a year-round destination and can be enjoyed at any time, depending on what works best for you. The Green Season (typically November to April) offers lush landscapes, fewer crowds, potential savings on accommodations, and often no single supplements. The Shoulder Season is also an excellent time to travel, offering a balance of great weather, wildlife viewing, and some accommodation discounts. It’s a fantastic opportunity to experience the best of Africa without the peak season crowds.
