In origine, il gin venne prodotto con scopi medicinali, per concentrare le proprietà curative del ginepro. Poi, da quello che in Olanda era conosciuto come “Jenever”, nel XVII secolo gli inglesi svilupparono il gin, che inizialmente era un’economica bevanda per il popolo. Da qualche decennio, tuttavia, sul mercato ci sono numerose produzioni di alta qualità e il gin è uno dei distillati più apprezzati al mondo.
On the history of gin
Originally, gin was produced for medicinal purposes, to concentrate the healing properties of juniper. Then, from what was known in Holland as “Jenever”, in the 17th century the English developed gin, which was initially a cheap drink for the common folk. For the past few decades, however, numerous high quality products have emerged in the market and gin is one of the most appreciated distillates in the world.
THE BOTANICALS
Gli aromi derivano dal ginepro – obbligatoriamente presente affinché il gin possa definirsi tale – e dalle botaniche aggiunte in percentuale minore per macerazione o altri metodi.

THE MAIN TYPES OF GIN
London Dry Gin
Il nome non ne definisce l’origine ma il processo produttivo: il gin dev’essere ottenuto solo da alcol di origine agricola e ingredienti vegetali, senza aggiunta di elementi artificiali.
The name does not define its origin but the production process: gin must be obtained only from alcohol of agricultural origin and vegetable ingredients, without adding artificial elements.
Distilled Gin
Segue lo stesso metodo di produzione del London Dry con ingredienti naturali, ma con l’aggiunta di estratti dopo la distillazione per accentuare gli aromi prima dell’imbottigliamento.
It follows the same production method as London Dry with natural ingredients, but the addition of extracts after distillation is allowed to accentuate the aromas before bottling.
Dry Gin
In quanto a produzione, assomiglia al Distilled Gin. Tuttavia, come dice il nome, si tratta di un gin secco, motivo per cui non è permesso addolcire la preparazione con zucchero.
In terms of production, it resembles Distilled Gin. However, as the name implies, it is a dry gin, which is why it is not allowed to sweeten the preparation with sugar.
Compound Gin
In questi gin le botaniche sono trattate separatamente, per distillazione o per sola infusione in soluzione idroalcolica a freddo, per poi assemblare i singoli estratti a piacere.
In these gins, the botanicals are treated separately, by distillation or by infusion only in a cold hydro alcoholic solution, then the individual extracts are assembled as desired.
Organic Gin
Si tratta di gin che possiedono la certificazione biologica per via dei loro ingredienti di prima qualità selezionati con cura, con particolare attenzione all’origine delle botaniche.

Sloe Gin
Dal caratteristico colore violaceo, è un gin a gradazione solitamente inferiore che viene aromatizzato con prugne selvatiche per macerazione, poi filtrato e leggermente dolcificato.

Si tratta di un gin unico e complesso, che presenta note erbacee e balsamiche. Prodotto in Trentino, il nome dialettale significa “larice”, un albero iconico delle Alpi che cresce sopra i 1200 m di quota, di cui vengono raccolti i germogli freschi per la produzione del distillato. Insieme al ginepro, infatti, le giovani pigne di larice rappresentano la botanica prevalente.
It is a unique and complex gin, featuring herbaceous and balsamic notes. Produced in Trentino, the name in dialect means “larch”, an iconic tree of the Alps that grows above 1200 m above sea level. The fresh shoots are harvested for the production of the distillate. In fact, the young larch cones together with the juniper represent the prevalent scents.

Le nove botaniche di Gin Luz vengono messe in infusione separatamente in alcol di origine cerealicola per un tempo che varia dalle 12 alle 96 ore a seconda dell’ingrediente. Ogni infuso viene poi distillato singolarmente con un alambicco discontinuo a bagnomaria da 1000 l. Il gin viene dunque imbottigliato senza essere filtrato.
DESCRIPTION:
the absence of filtration makes Gin Luz very soft and persistent. It is an extremely fresh and aromatic gin, quite dry and with balsamic and floral notes that accompany those of juniper.
The nine botanicals of Gin Luz are infused separately in grain alcohol for a time ranging from 12 to 96 hours depending on the ingredient. Each infusion is then distilled individually with a 1000 l bain-marie pot still. The gin is then bottled without being filtered.

This gin is born from the infusion of fresh juniper berries, collected partly in Val di Cembra, and orange and lemon peels from the Ecomuseum of the Garda lemon groves. A discontinuous still is used for distillation. It is truly an artisanal quality product, with a unique aromatic profile: a harmonious combination of intense notes of juniper and citrus scents.

I produttori di Tovel’s Gin sono stati i primi in Italia a utilizzare la tecnica della Vapour Infusion. Nella produzione seguono il disciplinare del London Dry, ma, anziché mettere le botaniche in infusione nell’alcol, esse sono posizionate in un cestello all’interno dell’alambicco. Il nome “Tovel” proviene dal lago omonimo di origine glaciale nel cuore del Parco naturale del Brenta, vicino al quale si trova la Distilleria Valentini.

the taste is balsamic and very aromatic with hints of liquorice, but extremely pleasant and easy to drink. Thejuniper berry predominates on the nose, with balsamic notes.
The producers of Tovel’s Gin were the first in Italy to use the Vapor Infusion technique. In production, they follow the London Dry specification, but instead of infusing the botanicals in alcohol, they are placed in a basket inside the alembic. The name “Tovel” comes from the homonymous lake of glacial origin in the heart of the Brenta Natural Park, near the Valentini Distillery.

L’Alkkemist Gin viene distillato solamente dodici volte all’anno, rigorosamente nelle notti di luna piena. Per produrre questo gin ultra premium viene infatti seguita una metodologia molto rigida, come un rituale. La base alcolica di grano viene distillata tre volte. Solo alla fine del processo viene aggiunta l’uva moscato, che dona al prodotto un aroma squisito e unico.

During the distillation process, the vapour of the spirit passes through a basket placed in the highest part of the still and is delicately infused with the aromatic flavour of the botanicals.

The process for making this gin is very complex. After the botanicals (such as lemongrass, lavender, juniper and, of course, hops) have been carefully prepared and distilled, the gin matures for at least four months to develop its perfect aroma. The result obtained is then purified with Eifel spring water and left to rest for 14 days.

Il termine africano “Indlovu” sta per elefante e, infatti, la particolarità di questo gin è che viene ottenuto dallo sterco di elefante, raccolto in vari luoghi in diversi periodi dell’anno, quindi lavato ed essiccato. I botanici estratti (come acacia, bucco ed erica) vengono poi infusi nel gin. La distilleria è così attenta agli elefanti che ha deciso di donare il 15% dei propri profitti a HERD, un’associazione sudafricana dedita alla loro protezione.
The African term “Indlovu” means elephant, and indeed, the uniqueness of this gin lies in the fact that it is made from elephant dung, collected from various locations at different times of the year, then washed and dried. The extracted botanicals (such as acacia, buchu, and heather) are then infused into the gin. The distillery is so committed to elephants that it has decided to donate 15% of its profits to HERD, a South African organization dedicated to their protection.
