A RESIDENTIAL PROJECT AT TAI HANG, HONG KONG

SITE SIZE: 35METER X 54 METER SOFTWARES USED:

THE PROJECT AIMS TO PROVIDE RESIDENTIAL ACCOUMMDATION MIXING WITH COMMERICAL USES TO A DESIGNATED PLOT. RETAINING PART OF THE ORIGINAL BUILDINGS IS PART OF THE SCHEME AND AT THE SAME TIME INCREASING OR MAINTAINING THE SAME RESIDENTIAL CAPCITY AS THE ORIGINAL.

PROJECT BRIEF

SITE CONTEXT

THE SITE IS SURROUNDED BY OLD RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERICAL BUILDING. THE NEIGHBORHOOD IS VIEWED AS FOREIGN AND EXOTIC, FILLED WITH BARS AND STREET ARTS.

STRATEGY

WHILE MAINTAINING THE CAPCITY OF THE RESIDENTIAL UNITS, ATRIUM SPACES ARE PROVIDED FOR PERFORMANCE AND COMMUNAL LIVING SHARING SPACES. THROUGHOUT A CONTINUOUS PATH, ONE CAN EXPERIENCE ART AND LIVING SIMULTANEOUSLY.

TRADITIONAL: PERFORMANCE SURROUNDED BY AUDIENCE

PROPOSED: PERFORMANCE SURROUNDED BY LIVING ACTIVITIES

PROPOSED: WITHOUT PERFORMANCE, SPACES CAN BE USED AS SHARED LIVING ROOM

LEFT BOTTOM: MOVEMENT STUDY OF THE FAMOUS BALLET PLAY, WHICH CONSISTED OF FIVE SEQUENCES. DIFFERENT SEQUENCES REUIRED DIFFERENT SET OF MOVEMENT TO DELIVER THE DANCES AND ACTS.

THROUGHOUT THE FLOORS, SPACIOUS ATRIUM ROOMS ARE PROVIDED FOR THE BALLET PERFORMANCE, CONNECTING BY STAIRS, WHICH PERFORMERS COULD WALK TO DIFFERENT ATRIUMS THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING TO PERFORM VARIOUS SEQUENCES DEPENDING ON THE STAGE SET.

DRAMA X LIVING

TRANSFORMATION

LARGE ATRIUM SPACES ARE SYMBOLIZED AS STAGES. THE LARGE OPENING ALLOWS AUDIENCE FROM OUTSIDE THE STREET AND INSIDE THE BUILDING CAN SEE WHAT IS HAPPENING, LIKE A TELEVISION SCREEN FOR THE OUTSIDE WORLD; AND A HUGE CITYSCAPE VIEW FOR THE RESDIENTS.

PROJECT BRIEF

THE SITE IS LOCATED BETWEEN TWO RESIDENTIAL BUILDING. THIS IS A REHABILITATION DORMITORY AND UNDER EXTENSIVE RESEARCHES ON REHAB. STANDARD REQUIREMENT, THERE NEEDS TO BE #1.A GREENERY IN THE VIEW FOR EVERY BEDROOMS, #2.A PRIVACY MEASURE, MAKING SURE PEOPLE FROM OUTSIDE CANNOT NOT EASILY INTERRUPT.

FACADE STRATEGY

FOR THE MAXIMUM PRIVACY CONTROL, ARCHITECTURAL NET IS INSTALLED AT THE RESPECTIVE LEVELS TO BLOCK PEDESTRIANS FROM VIEWING INSIDE WHILE ALLOWING MAXIMUM SUNLIGHT TO POUR IN FOR THE GREENERY TO BE GROWN INSIDE.

LAYOUT

A RESIDENTIAL REHAB. THAT SERVED AS A TRANSITION FOR THE RECOVERED FROM THE HEI LINH HAU DRUG ADDICTIVE TREATMENT CENTER. THE NARROW IN-BETWEEN BUILDING SITE IN MEI WO POSES A CHALLENGE THAT REQUIRE A MIN.50 PERCENT OF GREENERY WHILE EXECITING THE MAX. PRIVACY FOR THE PATIENTS.

MASSING STUDIES

IN ORDER TOALLOW MIN.40 PERCENT OF GREENERY, ADEQUATE AMOUNT OF DAYLIGHT MUST REACH THROUHGOUT THE BUILDING. THE TESTING ABOVE SHOWS DIFFERENT MASSING CATER FOR THE DAYLIGHT, AND THE MODEL ABOVE SHOWS THE ONE BEST ONE FOR DAYLIGHT AMONGST THEM ALL AFTER PHYSICAL TESTING.

BACKGROUND

THE SITE IS SITUATED IN THE BACK ALLEY OF A BUSY DISTRICT, SHEUNG WAN, AND RIGHT BELOW HOLLYWOOD PARK. OVER THE YEARS, HOMELESS HAVE INCREASED IN THIS AREA AND HAVE BECOME A PROBLEM OF HYGIENE AND LOCAL CULTURE.

PREFABRICATED MODULAR UNITS

THERE ARE MINIMAL FOUR MODULAR UNIT TYPES: RESIDENTIAL, CIRCULATION STAIR, LAUNDRY ROOM AND OFFICE MODULE. TO CATER THE NEED OF THE LOCAL, ALLOCATION AND THE QUANTITY OF EACH TYPE OF MODULAR IS DIFFERENT FROM PLACE TO PLACE

TYPICAL FLOOR

A TYPICAL FLOOR CONSISTS OF MINMINAL TWO LAUNDRY ROOMS, TWO STAIR CIRCULATION AND A OFFICE MODULE, THE REST COULD BE ALL RESDIENTIAL MODULES.

THE GROUND FLOOR CONSISTED OF BUSINESSES PROVIDING JOB OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE HOMELESS LIVING HERE. THE BUSINESSES CONSISTED OF CAFE, CRAFTSMAN WORKSHOP AND OTHER LOCAL SMALL BUSINESSES FUNDED BY THE GOVERNMENT.

BACKGROUND

THIS RURAL SITE IS SITUATED AT THE INTERVAL PART OF THE VILLAGES WHERE FARMERS, TOURISTS, LOCAL RESIDENTS, HIKERS CROSS PATH. BY PROVIDING A HYBRID OF MARKET, PLANTING AND HOSTEL, THE PROJECT AIMS TO PROVIDE SPACE FOR ALL THE STALKHOLDERS TO EXCHANGE CULTURE.

OBSERVATION

THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF LIVING CONDITION; HOUSES BY THE SHORE HAVE MORE PRIVACY COMPARING TO THE HOUSES AT THE HILL WHERE TOILET ARE OUTSIDE OF THE HOUSE.

THE LOCATION MAP PROVIDE GUIDANCE TO WHERE TO GROW SPECIFIC PLANT @2F. THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF LOCATION: THEY ARE VARIED IN LOCATION AND SIZES. THE FACADE TYPE IS IDEAL FOR 400mm1000mm GROWING SPACE; THE FLOOR PLANTER BOX IS IDEAL FOR 50mm - 100mm GROWING SPACE; THE HANGING BOX IS IDEAL FOR 15mm - 30mm GROWING SPACE.

THE FACADE IS A FRAME BY TIMBER STRIPS. APART FROM ALL THE BEDROOMS CONSISTED OF ENCLOSED GLAZED WINDOW FOR PRIVACY ISSUE, THE REST OF THE FACDE, NAMELY THE SLAB PLANTING SPACE AND THE FACADE CLIMBER PLANTING SPACE, ARE WITHOUT AN ENCLOSURE, ALLOWING MAXIMUM AIR CIRCULATION.

LOWER FLOOR

FOR THE LOWER FLOOR, THE IDEA IS TO MERGE WITH THE LOCAL COMMUNITY. BEING SO CLOSE TO THE LOCAL NEIGHBORHOOD, THE LAYOUT SHALL NOT BE INTRUSIVE, SUCH AS HAVING SO MANY WALLS, INSTEAD IT SHOULD BE AS TRANSPARENT AS POSSIBLE WHILE ENHANCING AND CONNECTING THE COMMUNITY BY PROVIDING PLAZA, WORKSHOP, SEATS.

UPPER FLOOR

FOR THE UPPER FLOOR, HEAT IS A BIG PROBLEM SINCE THERE ARE BEDROOMS AND PLANTS TOGETHER. THE IDEA OF HAVING A OPEN UPPER FLOOR IS IMPORTANT, WITH CORRIDOR LIKE SPACE WHERE AIR AND WIND CAN TRAVEL FREELY THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING.

- THE HIDDEN PART -

THE ROOF TOP IS CONPRISED OF THREE ELEMENTS: SUN PANELS, GLAZING AND THRESHOLD.

THE SUN PANELS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR PROVIDING POWER TO THE ARCHITECTURE;

THE THREE THRESHOLDS FACILIATE AIR FLOW REDUCING EXCESSIVE HEATS WITHIN THE PREMISE

THE GLAZING ARE ALL RIGHT ABOVE THE PLANTER PLATE, ALLOWING SUN LIGHT TO SHINE THROUGH.
