aukegan is on the move! There are so many initiatives and proposals for new projects and programs, one can only hope to see them come to life. The City of Waukegan Chamber of Commerce is very excited to be a part of any and all of these growth opportunities. There is one focus and goal for the Chamber, and that is to be a conduit and help our current business members grow their business, and help new businesses enter the city. We have been fortunate to partner with other organizations in Waukegan to bring education, networking and opportunities to our members. There is always room for more. We have a number of big events on the calendar and as always we have our monthly Lunch and Learn, Womens Lunch, Business After Hours and more. There are the quarterly Wake Up Waukegan breakfast presentations that draw a big crowd. All of these events serve to help our members build and grow – build relationships and grow their business, build their outreach and grow their reputation. The waterfront is always a favorite place of mine, and Waukegan Harbor is a great place to be with its new amenities and events. This year

there will be an even larger number of events at Harbor’s Edge down at the lake – Cinco de Mayo and Blues and Jazzfest, just to name a few. Genesee Street and our friends at Main Street keeps growing and adding some nice additions to downtown, as well as the huge concert and performers list at the Genesee Theatre. Don’t forget the Fountain Square, which is adding more hotels, dining and industry, The ArtWauk events, third Saturday of each month, and art exhibits keep growing as well. Some great collections can be seen at our local galleries.

Board of Directors EXECUTIVE BOARD Jack Orlov | Chairman of the Board Jack Orlov is the past commodore of the Waukegan Yacht Club and has had his boat in Waukegan harbor since 1994. Waukegan has become his “summer home,” and he is active on the Chamber board. He has been in the health care business since college and currently owns Right Healthcare Ventures. He is involved with many health care businesses focused on seniors and people with disabilities. Tiffany Dutton | Vice Chairman Tiffany Dutton, assistant vice president, sales manager of NorStates Bank in Waukegan, was born in Waukegan and currently lives in Kenosha, Wisconsin. She teaches financial literacy classes at Lake County Habitat for Humanity. Lucy Torres | Secretary Lucy Torres owns and operates Express Employment Professionals, a full-service staffing agency servicing all of Lake County. She is actively involved in the Chamber and also serves on the board for the Hispanic Chamber.

Dane Morgan is a senior vice president with NorStates Bank. He has lived and worked in and around Waukegan for over 30 years. He and his wife (Waukegan High School sweethearts) have two children and are active in various organizations in Lake County. DIRECTORS Jan Gibson Jan Gibson is the director of communications of the Historic Genesee Theatre. As an English, speech, theater and debate teacher, Gibson taught at Arlington High School. She then became a successful entrepreneur. She serves on many boards and commissions in Greater Lake County. Gibson’s love of theater and music, coupled with her extensive business experience, drew her to the Genesee Theatre.

Kim Needham

Kim Needham is the current assistant CEO for Vista Health System, located in Waukegan. She has worked and lived in the community for more than 20 years. Local affiliations include St. Anastasia Church and St. Anastasia Food Pantry. She is a past member of the Genesee Theatre board. John Mennie John Mennie is an associate at Salvi, Schostok & Pritchard P.C. He grew up near Toronto,

Ontario, and moved to Illinois in 2013 to begin his legal career. He joined the Waukegan Chamber of Commerce as a board member in 2015, and in his spare time enjoys golfing, reading and cooking. Mike O’Neil Mike O’Neil is the administration manager for NRG Energy’s Waukegan Generating Station where he has worked for 17 years in various administrative and financial roles. He has been a member of the Chamber’s board of directors for four years. Michael Purtell Michael Purtell joined the Chamber board in 2013. He moved to Waukegan in 2005 and works for the City of Waukegan Community Development Department specializing in planning and business development. He also volunteers for a number of local organizations. Dr. Michael J. Reed Dr. Reed was born and raised in Waukegan. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology with a microbiology minor from Western Illinois University while playing baseball. He earned a second bachelor’s, master’s in sports medicine and rehab and a doctorate from Logan College of Chiropractic and is a certified EMT. Dr. Reed volunteers with several local charities, serves on the board of 3 Brothers Theatre and is the physician/chiropractor for several sports teams, including Waukegan High School. He is the founder and physician of Family Chiropractic & Sports Rehab.

Ray Vukovich Ray Vukovich is a charter member of the board of directors of the City of Waukegan Chamber of Commerce and a former alderman for the City of Waukegan; he retired in 2010 as the director of governmental services. He owns and operates Ray Vukovich Consulting Services. Russell Warye Russell Warye joined the Waukegan Chamber board in 2013. He grew up in Waukegan and attended West Grade School. Warye is a certified broker with Get Covered Illinois and the president of Benefit Partners Group, LLC. April Dean April Dean is the director of sales and marketing for the SpringHill Suites Waukegan. She has been in the hospitality industry for over 10 years. April is a 26-year transplant to Lake County. She loves being involved in the community and volunteering for various organizations throughout Lake County. History

ince its beginning, Waukegan has been home to many entertainers including musicians, actors, writers and visual artists as well as venues that have entertained generations of residents and visitors alike. Waukegan is part of the early motion history, explained Ty Rohrer, museum supervisor for the Waukegan Historical Society. A local inventor, Edward Amet, was among many around the world at the turn of the century who raced to be the first to develop the first motion picture camera. His invention, called the magnascope, was a camera and projector, and because it was lightweight, he was able to share his movies around the country. “He never put a patent on his device, but he is recognized in the way he started to make movies,” Rohrer said. “He ventured away from using his camera as a way to just record natural events, and he was actually using actors and actresses and then later sets with models, making his own scenes and making his own movies.” One of the short movies he made was a comedy featuring two women who wore dresses while boxing. Believed to be the first actresses cast in a movie, one was Bess Bower Dunn, whose name will be recognized as the Lake County Discovery Museum is renamed. The other was Isabelle Spoor, the daughter of George Spoor, who went on to found S&A Studios in Chicago, the most famous of silent film companies of that time. The Spoor family also built the Academy Theater in 1916, the first theater in Waukegan built solely for showing motion pictures. Waukegan, at one time, had 40 theaters. The premiere entertainment venue is the Genesee Theatre, which was built in 1927 by businessmen Al Brumund, HC Burnett and DT Webb.

The cost to see a show at the Genesee Theater when it first opened was 60 cents. “This is where all the people were. These theaters wouldn’t have been built and the groups wouldn’t have come if they didn’t think there were people to fill the seats,” Rohrer said. Waukegan hosted many performers such as musicians like Benny Goodman and Gene Autry; unusual performers such as Moro “The Human Icicle,” who was frozen in a cake of ice; and more recently David Copperfield, Loretta Lynn and the Everly Brothers. But one of the most well-known performances was in 1939 when hometown legend Jack Benny held the world premiere of his movie “Man About Town” at the Genesee Theatre. “At that time period, Waukegan was Hollywood,” Rohrer said. The unique thing about Benny, who was raised in Waukegan and lived there until age 18, was he never forget where he came from.

“Everybody about the country was tuning into his radio show and later his television show, and people around the country got to know Waukegan because he talked about it quite often,” said Rohrer, who added Benny’s last appearance in Waukegan was as a guest performer for the first-ever performance of the Waukegan Symphony Orchestra. Another well-known hometown artist is Ray Bradbury, whose writings often conveyed stories of his childhood. One of his stories, “Green Town” has many references to Waukegan using pseudonyms. The community has later recognized him by creating a Bradbury walk, where guests take a walking tour through the city and stop at sites important to the artist’s life and writings. Waukegan has become known as a spot where filmmakers come to film their movies. Over 50 movies as well as several television shows, have been filmed here, including “The Blues Brothers,” “Groundhog Day,” “Batman Begins” and most recently, “Chicago Fire.”

Waukegan also has been home to talented visual artists. Born in Waukegan in 1860, Kate Cory later moved to live near the Hopi Indians to capture them in photos and paintings to show how these seclusive people lived. Known as one of the southwest United States greatest artists, Cory is honored by the Waukegan Arts Council who presents the Kate Cory Award to a local artist.

Today, many local artists are not only bringing a better education of art to the community, but also showcasing a city filled with many different cultural backgrounds, and celebrating those cultures. Examples include the mariachi bands at the elementary and middle schools within Waukegan School District 60 and the Waukegan Tamburitzan, a dance organization formed in 1972 to promote Croatian heritage.

Known for his charcoal drawings, pencil drawings and watercolor, Phil Austin is among artists recognized at the Waukegan Walk of Stars along Sheridan Road, Rohrer added. Austin’s daughter recently presented to the Waukegan Public Library slides featuring her father’s work.

“These dance groups are an opportunity to teach the new generations, those born in Waukegan who may not have background of the homeland, but can be taught the traditions of their predecessors,” Rohrer said.

The city began a recent movement to recognize local artists and help revitalize its downtown with the start of the Art Wauk, a monthly event since 2011. Each month, a property owner gives keys to a retail space to an ArtWauk artist, who turns the space into a professional gallery, recruiting more artists and hanging a show.

Waukegan continues to also celebrate and share the arts through work by the Waukegan Park District, which offers music, dance, art and theater programs as well as offers opportunities to see local performances such as the Waukegan Symphony Orchestra, Waukegan Concert Chorus and Bowen Park Theatre Company. The community also showcases the arts through community festivals. One is is the annual Ray

Bradbury Dandelion Wine Fine Arts Festival, which has been held the first Saturday in June since 2001. The free event features music and entertainment stages, fine arts display and family activities. “We’re trying to showcase the local talent both in visual arts but also with music, with dance, and we do a pretty good job at that,” Rohrer said.

eaturing homes that attract a variety of price points and style preferences and offering a lakefront view and growing artistic environment, Waukegan offers a great place to call home. A lifelong Lake County resident and a properties broker, Marty Golden has lived in Waukegan for 20 years. He said what draws many to Waukegan is its proximity to Lake Michigan, the community environment and the opportunity for affordable housing, whether it be a mid-century ranch, Victorian style home, vintage farmhouse or a bungalow. Another great asset to living in Waukegan, he noted, is the up-and-coming arts and theater district. There’s the smaller community theater, the Three Brothers Theatre as well as the Genesee Theatre, which offers weekly headline acts. “A lot of people are moving in from other areas that want an up-and-coming arts and theater district, and we offer that in Waukegan with the various art galleries and the Art Wauk, which takes place every third Saturday of the month. It’s been a very positive impact,” he said. “There’s very creative art displays. You get a chance to meet local artists and see their talented work and actually buy some of it,” he added. Positive changes that also are bringing residents to Waukegan are the completion of the Waukegan Harbor clean-up, as well as future plans to develop the lakefront. Golden said his hope for future residential growth will be along the lakefront.

Golden explained the city features entry-level price points for first-time home buyers, priced about $119,000. There also are affordable townhomes, which are priced near $129,000 where in other Lake County markets may cost $180,000. “I’m seeing a trend of younger people, millennials who grew up in Waukegan, graduated, went away to college and are now in the workforce and they desire to purchase their first home in Waukegan where they grew up. I’m seeing a lot of that,” he said. Golden said he’s also seen a couple higher priced home sales within the past year sold near $390,000 and $425,000, which is unusual for Waukegan. “It’s encouraging to see some higher dollar ticket items locally,” Golden said. “There is more stability with the market.”

Golden said he and many who come to live in Waukegan choose it as well for the love of the older homes, a historic gem along Sheridan Road. He recalls the first home he bought was a wood-framed Victorian from 1900, and then moved to one of the city’s historic landmarks built in 1853, a Gothic revival. He currently lives in a 1926 Georgian. “In order for me to duplicate this type of home that I have in another community such as Lake Forest or Lake Bluff, it would cost over $1 million,” Golden said. “And I was able to acquire it in Waukegan at around the $200,000 price point.” There’s also a large assortment of homes for those who want to renovate. Golden said he knows from personally shopping at the hardware store in Waukegan, many building supplies are often sold out as so many are completing renovations to their homes.

“There is so much renovation going on, which is great. It brings the property values up, and it revitalizes the neighborhoods,” he said.

stablished on Dec. 26, 1916, the district has 48 sites and more than 735 acres of land, including the 18-hole Bonnie Brook and 9-hole Greenshire Golf Courses. Facilities operated by the district include the Field House Sports, Fitness and Aquatics Center, the Jack Benny Center for the Arts, the Waukegan SportsPark, the Waukegan Skate Park, the Waukegan BMX Track, recreational centers, an outdoor swimming pool, disc golf course, dog exercise area and agility course, outdoor sports fields, picnic areas, playgrounds, and sports courts including basketball, tennis and pickleball. A full range of programs and services are offered year-round for all ages, from infants to seniors, as well as special needs populations. Healthy lifestyles, wellness initiatives, and a connection with the outdoors and nature are integrated throughout programs, services and special events. Cultural events are provided by the Waukegan Symphony Orchestra and Concert Chorus, and the Waukegan History Museum. There is something for everyone! HEALTH AND WELLNESS Waukegan’s premier fitness facility, the Field House Sports, Fitness and Aquatics Center was opened in 2006. Today it bustles with more than 5,550 members who work out at the 14,000-square-foot fitness center, the one-seventh mile indoor track, the gymnasium with six hardwood sports courts for basketball and volley ball, two batting cages and a three-story climbing wall. A Vista Health System partnership delivers free educational programs and health screenings year-round and rehabilitative therapies at the Aquatic Center. The Waukegan Parks Foundation raises funds to provide every second-grade student in Waukegan a field trip to the Field House for a water safety and swim lesson, climbing lesson, physical activities and a healthy meal. A grant from North Shore Gas provides a free introductory starter SwimSmart class for ages 6 and 7 that focuses on water safety and being comfortable in the water. Waukegan residents have opportunities to learn pursue their favorite sports and recreational

pastimes at the Waukegan Park District. The Waukegan SportsPark opened in 2011, centralizing adult and youth outdoor soccer and softball. The award-winning facility contains 13 natural turf sports fields, one artificial turf championship field and four softball fields that accommodate Waukegan teams while attracting regional and national tournaments. Two golf courses attract Waukegan residents and golfers from neighboring communities. Parks throughout the community provide opportunities to play softball, basketball, tennis and other sports. The district reaches out to its community with a variety of free programs in neighborhood and community parks, such as Bowen Blues, Music at Washington Park, Arts Park, Movies in the Park, Parks and Play and the Tanabata Festival.

One of the oldest parks, Roosevelt Park, has undergone many changes to make it more environmentally friendly. The lagoon was transformed into a wetland to remove pollution and reduce sediment moving downstream into Lake Michigan. Permeable pavers in the parking lot and the rain garden also reduce pollution. The loop path system and boardwalk promotes walking through the park. The signage in the park won the Illinois Society of Landscape Architects Merit Award.

An annual “free for all’ during the Christmas and New Year’s school holiday provides the community with free days and programs at the Field House in addition to the free, year-round daily walking times, popular with seniors. Throughout the year, the district provides special interest, recreation, health, wellness, nature and cultural programs that are free and benefit residents of all ages. CONSERVATION AND ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP Conservation and environmental stewardship are the heart of the Waukegan Park District. More than 100 years ago, citizens began to realize that Waukegan’s beautiful and diverse natural areas were being lost and threatened as the city was growing. After the park district was formed in 1916, the first commissioners acquired lands of great natural beauty to preserve them for future generations to enjoy, Washington and Roosevelt parks. In 1931, Bonnie Brook Golf course was purchased at the urging of the community who

to preserve the land from development. Bonnie Brook is rated as one of the best public 19-hole golf courses in the region. In 1963, Bowen Park was purchased and continues to be one of Waukegan’s prized jewels with its spectacular playground, Grosche Field, Lilac Cottage, Waukegan History Museum, Jack Benny Center for the Arts, Jane Addams Center, Children’s Garden and the Morrison Picnic Center. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. A $1.5

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE In this Centennial Year, the Waukegan Park District is looking to the future by planning new facilities for Belvidere Park. It is celebrating its first 100 years with a parade and community festival on July 2, 2017, which will include a time capsule burial and planting 100 Centennial trees. Arts & Entertainment ARTWAUK: ART COOPERATIVE ENTICES VISITORS

rtWauk, a monthly explosion of the tactical application of the arts, contributes to the cultural education and artistic appreciation in Waukegan, while helping the economic development of the downtown. Every month, different artwork, artists and spaces are involved, challenging the community to understand art in all its forms. This grassroots event transforms from one month to the next, sometimes following a theme – such as honoring veterans and active military – and more often being as individualistic as the artists themselves. Galleries participating in ArtWauk have hosted internationally, nationally and locally known artists who work in a variety of media with diverse themes. Internationally known contemporary visual artist Trevor Bell’s warehouse-sized abstracts were featured in Urban Edge Gallery. Sculptor Bruce Niemi, whose works appear throughout the United States, was integral to exhibit entitled “Texture.” A curated show from the Richard Harris Art Collection attracted first time visitors to Waukegan, including families in town for graduation at Naval Station Great Lakes, art enthusiasts from Chicago and Milwaukee, and Genesee Theatre patrons who made a point of arriving early specifically to see the exhibit. Original works by Rembrandt, Toulouse-Lautrec, van Ultrect, Albrecht Dürer, Jasper Johns, Marcos Raya and Robert Mapplethorpe were among the museum quality pieces featured in the exhibit. Because of the importance and nature of this exhibit, the gallery was open

specific days every week to maximize its availability to visitors. ART EVOLUTION Locally revered artists, such as Maggie Schwarz Kraus and Skip Wiese were at the start of the art evolution in Waukegan decades ago and continue to be active in the art revolution. Dandelion Gallery partnered with both Swingline and Waukegan Tire on separate exhibits that used materials from those corporations in their

works. Dandelion Gallery also supports young artists through a high school gallery show and a scholarship program. The Mic in the Karcher Artspace holds spoken word showcases monthly and experiments with pairing performance and visual arts. Karcher 405 Gallery developed a show celebrating Black History Month entitled “Black [N][V][Adj]”, featuring a film, roundtable discussions, physical art and culinary art centered on the African-American experience in the United States.

Live performances and pop-up galleries round out the offerings during this cooperative art experience. On any given ArtWauk night, Jerry Seinfeld may be making people laugh at the Genesee Theatre, Three Brothers Theatre may be showcasing the world premiere of an upand-coming playwright, and punk bands may be at The Burgundy Room – within blocks of each other. Outdoor pop-up galleries featuring photographs of lost architectural wonders or traditional Dia de Muertes sugar add to the offerings and the diverse flavor of the exhibits. These temporary, pop-up galleries are often stepping stones for new artists to become part of the art scene, at times leading to a permanent bricks-and-mortar space. The original concept of the ArtWauk was to fill vacant properties to improve the perception of the downtown neighborhood. The ultimate goal was to make available spaces vibrant enough to recruit viable businesses, creating local jobs, broadening the tax base and improving the overall quality of life in Waukegan. On Waukegan’s birthday, February 23, in 2002, Mayor Dan Drew and other visionaries supported the first ArtWauk.

In February 2011, a team consisting of artists, volunteers, city staff and Waukegan Main Street staff coordinated a grand opening for Dinosaur Studio Tattoo and the new office for Illinois State Representative Rita Mayfield. On the same block. On the same day. Organizers and business owners alike were thrilled to see people from every walk of life come downtown for the free event and to celebrate new doors opening. Six years on, they are both still a vibrant part of the arts community and their neighbor, Family Piano Co., has expanded to include additional lesson rooms and a performance space as more people become keenly aware of the documented benefits of arts and music. The success of this model has been remarkable. Thanks to cooperation from forward-thinking property owners, the team renovated space for six new businesses to open on one block of South Genesee Street. The basic model was put into play by these steps: a property owner shares keys to a small retail space with an ArtWauk artist. The artist rallies volunteers to paint walls, scrub the windows and floors, replace lighting and turn the space into a

professional gallery, recruiting more artists and hanging a show. The volunteer force would be the basis of the marketing machine, distributing and posting flyers and utilizing social media to draw people to the grand opening. The return on investment for the property owners was hundreds of people walking through their available facilities and seeing the spaces in the best possible light. Every one of the six original spaces has been rented to a paying tenant. The years of monthly ArtWauks have energized and positively changed Waukegan’s downtown. Property owners have enjoyed renewed interest in their buildings; business owners reap the rewards of more foot traffic; artists delight in additional spaces to exhibit; and the overall perception of downtown has dramatically improved. City spokesman David Motley, an artist and one of the event organizers, was quoted in the Lake County News-Sun: “Waukegan is known as that destination to come experience art. We’re able to enjoy five years of success and five years of a good reputation. People have expectations when they come to ArtWauk that are really high.” ArtWauk continues to evolve with the times, with the art, and with the community.

aukegan provides excellent learning opportunities for its students at the elementary, high school and college level. One way that Waukegan is providing this excellent education is by continuing to explore and make continuous improvements to better serve the Waukegan community. A new superintendent, Theresa Plascencia, is bringing innovative ideas to Waukegan School District 60 to provide exceptional educational opportunities. The largest district in Lake County, Waukegan District 60, serves about 17,000 pre-K through 12th-grade students. Nicholas Alajakis, chief of staff at Waukegan School District 60, explained one of the changes the district will implement this summer will be offering a free summer school program to kindergarten through eighth grade students. The idea came listening to parents, who are eager to find more summer opportunities for their children. It also will help students progress in their learning. “This is helping students to prepare for the next grade and to give them enriching curriculum in English, math and STEM fields, to bring some robust programs to these students during the summer when that summer loss often takes hold,” he said.

When you have a strong public school district, it leads to a stronger community.” The College of Lake County Lakeshore Campus in downtown Waukegan offers all the benefits of the main College of Lake County campus but on a smaller scale. The campus provides a full range of academic choices, including all of the college’s associate degree options and several certificate programs. Lakeshore also offers GED and English as a Second Language courses as well as non-credit continuing education for personal enrichment.
