The only marine mail delivery of its type in the country turns 100 this year. On the Lake Geneva Cruise Line Mail Boat Tour, passengers watch as athletic jumpers leap from boat to dock delivering mail, with the catch being that the boat never stops moving. In between leaps, jumpers narrate the tour and describe the historic estate homes once owned by Chicagoans of fame and fortune, including the Maytags, Bordens and Wrigleys. In another lakeside community, Elkhart Lake, the storied Siebkens Resort marks its centennial as well. A fourth generation owns and operates the turn-of-the-century resort, and its historic Stop-Inn Tavern has long been a hangout for celebrity drivers from the nearby Road America track. Road America was established in 1955 as the first permanent road racing course in the country, and many of the world’s best racers have competed at the legendary four-mile, 14-turn road circuit. Road America is opening a new retail and visitor center, main gate and winner’s circle.

Old World Wisconsin documents the settlement of 19th- and early 20th-century Wisconsin with an 1870s crossroads village and 10 ethnic farmsteads across 576 acres of wooded hills in the Kettle Moraine State Forest. Brand new Born and raised in Wisconsin, Frank Lloyd Wright’s organic designs were said to be inspired by the landscape

of his childhood home. Later this year, a new Frank Lloyd Wright Trail will take travelers on a self-guided architectural adventure through nine counties in southern Wisconsin. Fans can see some of Wright’s most famous works, from private houses to public buildings. Highlights include the SC Johnson Administration and Research Tower in Kenosha, the Unitarian Meeting House in Madison and the famed Taliesin in Spring Green.

also celebrating 25 years in 2016. Wisconsin’s micro-brewing industry is still growing strong, with several new breweries opening this year, including Glendale’s Bavarian Bierhaus. Located at the site of the former Bavarian Inn, the bierhaus will include a brewery, fullservice craft beer bar and restaurant, and a beer garden when it opens April 26. Carefully crafted German-style lagers will be the star of this brewery, which will also feature a menu with German and Bavarian favorites and American cuisine. new location in Milwaukee this year. MobCraft Brewery bottles a different small-batch craft beer each month based on the results of online voting. The company originated in Madison but is constructing a new production facility in Milwaukee’s Walker’s Point neighborhood that will feature public tours and a taproom.

The Washington Park Velodrome in Kenosha, the oldest operating track in the country, has hosted bicycle races since 1927. It reopens this year after a rebuild and is looking to host even larger events. The track is 333.3 meters in length with 27 degree banking in the corners, and has produced countless national champions and Olympians. Races are free to watch.

Wisconsin is getting its first Kimpton Hotel in Milwaukee’s historic Third Ward district, which has reinvented itself from a warehouse district to an arts and fashion center. When it opens this spring, the hotel will have a destination restaurant on the ground floor and bar on the rooftop deck.

Hillside Inn in Ephraim first opened in 1900 and is one of Door County’s most historic inns. Located just steps from the iconic Wilson’s Ice Cream, the inn closed in 2010 but reopened under new ownership in January. Hillside is on the National Register of Historic Places and features five beautiful suites and two cottages.

The Julia Belle Swain, a circa 1971 steam sternwheeler with 100-year-old steam engines, has been painstakingly renovated and remade by a nonprofit group and is returning to service as a special event vessel on the Mississippi River in La Crosse. It is one of only five authentic operating steam riverboats in the nation, and the only one based on the Upper Mississippi River.

1. World’s Largest Fish — Hayward The largest building in the town of Hayward is a giant fiberglass musky, also known as the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame. The musky is 4½ stories tall and as long as a Boeing 757. Guests can enter through the musky’s tail, make their way up to the observation platform in the fish’s open jaw, and even fish the 88,000-gallon pond under the musky. 2. Al Johnson’s Goats on the Roof — Sister Bay Goats grazing on the sod roof of Al Johnson’s Swedish Restaurant have been turning heads and drawing tourists for decades. These goats have earned celebrity status for

7. Sputnik Crash Site — Manitowoc Sept. 6, 1962, changed the course of Manitowoc’s history when a 20-pound piece of Sputnik IV crash-landed in the middle of its main street. To celebrate this odd twist of fate, the city has preserved the crash spot and saved the space debris in the nearby Rahr-West Art Museum. 8. World’s Largest Penny — Woodruff At 15 feet high, 12 inches thick and weighing nearly nine tons, the World’s Largest Penny maintains a prominent place in tiny Woodruff. The concrete currency commemorates a 1953 fundraiser engineered by Dr. Kate Pelham Newcomb, who challenged local schoolchildren to save their pennies to build a hospital.
