Streeterville, a great place to live, work & play
ore than 100 years ago, Streeterville was a busy shipping port with factories, warehouses and some early residential/ hotel buildings. Through the past several decades, this neighborhood has been transformed into high-end luxury residential buildings, hotels, shopping and dining. Streeterville has approximately 30,000 residents, and thousands of tourists and visitors come each year to enjoy everything it has to offer. Approximately half of the residential buildings are condominiums or co-ops while the other half are rental apartment buildings. There are many purchase options ranging from $150,000 to $13 million and rental options from $1,500 to $25,000 per month, providing a great mix of living options for every budget. The neighborhoods’ location between Michigan Avenue and the Lake Michigan shoreline provides for a more calm, personal and community environment in Streeterville than you might expect in the heart of a metropolis like Chicago. Streeterville residents know their neighbors; they visit with one another at the dog parks, exercise at the local park district field house and dine together at the numerous food establishments. There is definitely a distinct feeling of community in the area. The latest new developments in Streeterville that continue to enhance the neighborhood are the new stunning One Bennett Park residential building along with the newly-opened Bennett Park, which is adjacent to it. Designed by New York’s Robert M. Stern, its elegance is a great enhancement in the area. Another architecturally significant addition to the neighborhood is 465 Park Drive, an all-glass rental building adding beautiful curb appeal to Grand Avenue and Illinois Street. Beyond
streeterville CHAMBER OF COMMERCE IL-STV-CW-20 Design.indd 14
these new luxury residences, more world-class developments are being proposed – 400 N. Lake Shore Drive’s two tower residential project and the historic Tribune Tower conversion to luxury condos as well as a new very tall mixed-use building adjacent to the Tribune. These will all be wonderful assets in the neighborhood once completed. Aside from the highly visible residential developments, the neighborhood witnessed a busy year for the retail and restaurant industries. Many new restaurants opened along with the new Starbucks Roastery on Michigan Avenue, which is the largest Starbucks in the world and brings visitors from everywhere. With the trending change in the retail industry from selling of products in stores to “experiences” as commodities, we are seeing this shift toward creating exciting events and interesting experiences in retail throughout Streeterville. Hotel development in Streeterville was influenced by a number of factors including the city’s recent tourism growth, the increasing popularity of the neighborhood and strong demand from the nearby institutions such as Northwestern Medicine’s campus, which provides a counter-cyclical demand and doesn’t really fluctuate the same way that business, convention or leisure demand does. This major transformation that the neighborhood is witnessing is bringing with it higher density, more foot traffic, better curb appeal and more “eyes on the street.” These elements in turn are further establishing Streeterville as a safe, diverse and prosperous neighborhood and an amazing destination to live, work and play. – By Gail Spreen, Streeterville Properties Group

The Pier has expanded its dining, retail and entertainment offerings and it has evolved into a year-round destination. The newly-renovated Fifth Third Bank Family Pavilion serves as a robust marketplace representing the best of Chicago’s culture and hospitality. It features an assortment of restaurants, shops and entertainment. These new spaces also showcase cutting-edge technology including interactive digital screens. Fourteen monitors placed along a 20-foot stretch of wall are inspired by Chicago’s connection to water. The Concierge Hub stars four screens anchored by Navy Pier’s Guest Experience Staff. Work is nearly complete on the Curio Collection by Hilton property, which sits adjacent to Festival Hall at the eastern end of Navy Pier. This 222 guest room hotel features floor to ceiling windows that showcase breathtaking views of the city’s famed skyline, Lake Michigan and the Pier. Guests will also enjoy the high-energy first floor restaurant, the stateof-the-art fitness center and an unparalleled 30,000-squarefoot rooftop restaurant, bar and event space. Of course, Navy Pier’s programmatic offerings will continue to expand in 2020 and beyond as the Pier remains committed to offering free, one-of-a-kind arts and culture experiences designed to kindle inspiration, education and connection for guests from across the city and globe. The gem, located on Lake Michigan and stretching more than six city blocks, paints happiness throughout Polk Bros Park, a 13-acre green park that boasts the Polk Bros Fountain and Plaza and the Polk Bros Park Performance Lawns. The newly-constructed Peoples Energy Welcome Pavilion in Polk Bros Park serves as a graceful beacon. The pavilion’s expansive screen display highlights Navy Pier’s history and, in various languages, welcomes guests. The soul-soothing South Dock, along with the Wave Wall staircase leads to Pier Park.
