COMMUNITY ASSET Chamber Brings Members, Businesses Together Local businesses that choose to invest in membership at the Southlake Chamber of Commerce get a lucrative return on their venture. The Chamber focuses on engaging its members in business opportunities and networking events that provide them with more exposure and connectivity that alone they wouldn’t be able to grasp.

With more than 500 members, the Chamber designates one night a year to honor those that have gone above and beyond to benefit Southlake and its prosperity. At its annual Awards Banquet, the Chamber unveils its prestigious Citizen of the Year honoree and many other notable individuals and businesses that have impacted the community.

In 2018, the Chamber honored Southlake Mayor Laura Hill as its Citizen of the Year for her countless efforts on behalf of the city, such as creating the S.K.I.L. (Southlake Kids Interested in Leaderships) program.

The chamber also named winners for the Chairman’s

Award, President’s Award, Civic Group of the Year, Director of the Year, Corporate Business of the Year, Small Business of the Year, Ambassador of the Year, Volunteer of the Year and Youth of the Year.

When the Chamber is not bestowing honors to worthy individuals, they are helping millenials – and other members — transition from newbie to pro. One way they do this is by hosting several networking events each month, allowing members to make contacts and promote their products and services.

Through the Southlake Young Professionals Group, individuals age 39 and under offers individuals a great way to generate business referrals, get leads on employment opportunities and have a good time.

“The Southlake Young Professionals group is a social group of the Southlake Chamber of Commerce focused on the involvement and connection of young professionals in the area,” said Rachel Porter, Personal Mortgage Consultant at Red Diamond Home Loans.

“We host a monthly happy hour event to provide an opportunity for a diverse group of professionals to connect and network in a relaxed yet purposeful atmosphere.”

Another way the Chamber helps professionals make the most of their membership, and expand their skills, is through Leadership Southlake. This nine-month program goes from August to May, giving participants a behind-the-scenes look of how the city and its entities operate. In addition, the class visits the state capitol and the Dallas/Fort Worth Airport.

The Chamber’s most celebrated event is Oktoberfest, which further garners a sense of community among member businesses and residents. As the chamber’s largest event, Oktoberfest features a little something for everyone, no matter the age or interest.

Food vendors line Southlake Town Square with German fare, mouthwatering barbecue, kettle corn, desserts and numerous other tasty treats.

Arts and crafts vendors set up shop too, and attendees can browse booths for one-of-a-kind finds, such as crochet pieces, toys, signs, pet treats, photographs, jewelry, candles, pottery and metals.

Likewise, there are numerous opportunities to sponsor a booth during Oktoberfest, with various levels available.

There is also an excitement-packed sports zone for catching the big game, a family fun zone, and the always-popular and muchanticipated, wiener dog races, where approximately 100 Dachshunds compete for the title of champion.

For members who would like to talk business over a challenging round of golf, the Chamber can make that happen every year. In 2018, the Annual Golf Shootout takes place at Cowboys Golf Club. This is a great opportunity to mix business with pleasure.

IN SOUTHLAKE Mayor Hill Solidifies Legacy in Southlake

F

rom the time she was little, Southlake Mayor Laura Hill knew she wanted an adventure. Growing up on the East Coast, living all over the United States (including Alaska!), working in different industries, getting married, raising kids, giving back to the community – it all had one thing in common: her love of connecting with people and making things better.

Everyone who’s been around Mayor Hill sees how she’s constantly engaged. Whether it’s her business at Downey Publishing, working at a Southlake City Council meeting or spending time with friends and family, her focus is always on listening and learning more.

The Mayor says it’s at the heart of her passion for Southlake.

“There’s value in everyone’s voice. It’s my job to listen and find that seed. I’m really good at seeing the question and helping answer it.”

Since Hill became Mayor in May 2015, she has tackled issues with a can-do attitude that has become her trademark in Southlake. The first big issue came just a few months after she took the oath of office.

“When the City and the City Council got a lot of questions from residents about their water bills in the summer of 2015, I was determined to figure out how to answer them,” she said. “I never know what issue will grab my attention but when it happens I am focused until I get a solution and in this case, I was interested in having people understand how the City’s new water meters worked and what that meant for controlling their water bill moving forward.

Hill takes the same approach to business. Her “Meet the Mayor” gatherings started as a way for Hill to get to know more people in Southlake. Now they have turned into so much more.

“Southlake has so many amazing businesses, both big and small,” she said. “As Mayor, I think it’s important that the Council have a strong connection to our business community. These `Meet the Mayor’ gatherings not only achieve that, but they also forge connections between Southlake’s business owners and community leaders. That only makes Southlake’s business community stronger.”

There have been more than 30 Meet the Mayors since 2015.

In Hill’s mind, they are an opportunity to help people be heard, exchange ideas, and maybe even start something special.

“There are so many ways to tie being a successful mayor and running a successful city to running a successful business,” Hill said.

“The way to make it work is to have a great team of people to help you create a strategy and goals, listen to what people have to say, and then make a decision.”

Hill has received many honors through the years, including the Legacy of Women Award from Safe Haven, the Carroll ISD Shankman Award for service to children, and most recently the Southlake Chamber named her the 2018 Citizen of the Year. All are causes she is passionate about, but a special light comes on when you start talking about anything involving kids.

S.P.A.R.K. (Students and Parents Against Risks to our Kids), S.A.S.O. (Scholars and Athletes Serving Others) and S.K.I.L. (Southlake Kids Interested in Leadership) are all Hill’s ideas. Each group has its own focus, and as with being Mayor and running her businesses, Hill says when it comes to kids it’s about giving them and their parents a seat at the table.

“I’m not afraid of controversy and the only way to handle controversy is to jump in the middle of it. With SPARK it was getting parents to talk about the things that might be going wrong behind closed doors and giving them a safe place to work through it,” she said. “I am so proud of what S.P.A.R.K. has accomplished – all we had to do was start the conversation.”

The other programs have different focuses. “S.A.S.O. gives our kids the opportunity to give to others and learn how important it is to give back. S.K.I.L. is about leadership and seeing the business world and government world close up,” she said. “They are Southlake’s future and I like to think that we are setting the stage for some amazing results.”

“I believe in Southlake, and I am dreading the day when my time as Mayor is over,” she said. “There has never been a job that has suited me so perfectly.” n

DRAGON DNA Former Football Star Comes Home to Coach In a young career sparked by a legacy of championship, the new head coach of Southlake Carroll High School is back where it all began.

“I’m home,” said Riley Dodge. “It’s right where I want to be.”

Riley is in his first job as head coach, but he’s no rookie.

Football and coaching are in his DNA. “I grew up in the Southlake Carroll field house and on the football field,” said Dodge. “My dad Todd Dodge coached the football team, and I played for him all during high school. My mother was a teacher in the [Carroll] Independent School District, and my wife grew up here too.”

He is leading a storied program: the Dragons have earned the title of state champions eight times. As their quarterback, Dodge helped them sail to stardom from 2004 to 2007 in consecutive

victories. But it didn’t end there. His father — a legendary coach in his own right — went on to coach football at the University of North Texas, and Dodge followed.

“I played for him at North Texas for three years and finished my last year at McNeese State,” he said. “After college, I coached at Texas A&M and University of Texas for a combined total of five years.”

He has big shoes to fill, knowing that his father compiled a 98-11 record at Carroll, setting the elder Dodge apart as one of the state’s great coaches. But he’s not sweating it. With his feet planted firmly back on the familiar green turf of Dragon Stadium, the young coach is brimming with excitement as he prepares for many winning seasons to come. He’ll pave his own way — creative and competitive in the process — but he’ll bring lessons

“One of the big things I’ve learned along the way is that you can’t sweat the small stuff,” Dodge said. “You control what you can, and then you have to let the rest of it go. Right now the team is looking good, and we’re getting where we want to go, fast. But we’ve got a lot of work ahead.”

Dodge is deeply involved in the community and devoted to mentoring all of the upcoming players, from middle school on up.

“You have to look at the big picture, there’s a lot of moving parts, from the students and football players to working with the freshman coaches,” Dodge said. “I love the work — the processes and the schematics of things. But I’m not in it alone.

I’m extremely blessed to have a great staff and a lot of guys who have been doing this for a very long time. I am honored to work alongside them, and I’m humbled to be in this position. It’s a dream come true.” n

DEVELOPING A DESTINATION Mixed-use complex offers a little of everything Southlake will soon be home to an unusual, welcoming and vibrant mixed-use development. Carillon Parc will include living spaces, a retail development, business space, 8 acres of parkland, entertainment venues and a brand new public library. No one is more excited than Mary Lee Alford, who is the president of the homeowner’s association at Carillon Parc. She and her husband have secured their villa.

“Carl and I bought our lot in the Villa District of Carillon in 2013. We have been living here for four years, and we had a custom home built. We picked our lot based on where we want to be located in relation to the retail development,” Alford said.

The retail development will feature what Alford describes as “Old World style and charm,” blending retail, business and living spaces. Above retail establishments, for example, there will be high-end flats available for purchase.

“We’ve traveled to over 70 countries, and we love the Old World style of how people live, work and play,” she said.

Hunter Chase Capital Partners is buiding the retail development and expects to break ground during the first

quarter of 2019. The development has undergone multiple iterations, until it met the needs and desires of everyone involved.

Along with businesses and public spaces, Carillon Parc will be home to chef-driven, upscale restaurants and boutique retail establishments.

“This retail development won’t have franchise-type stores,” Alford said, adding that residents can expect to see the types of shops they might find on Rodeo Drive instead.

A “carillon” is a French bell tower, and in recognition of the name, the retail development will include several bell towers. The 8-acre park will serve as a central greenspace, and will feature a water fountain and a splash pad for children. Parking garages will limit the need for on-street parking, which allows the developers to preserve existing trees.

In addition to providing space where residents can live, shop, work and play, the development is situated near a hospital and retirement facilities. It is a mixed-use, multigenerational development that will further establish Southlake as a destination for entertainment, shopping and tourism. n

HISTORY

A STORIED PAST Legends live on in Southlake Flanked by fertile prairie and good water supply from Denton Creek, the lush forest and surrounding lands attracted settlers from far and wide. Arriving in wagons and on horseback, they came from Tennessee, Missouri and many Southern states to make their homes from the sturdy timber. In the 1840s, the Lonesome Dove Baptist Church was built, followed by White’s Chapel Methodist Church in the early 1870s.

Prior to 1956, Southlake was known simply as the area west of Grapevine, defined by four small communities: Dove, Jellico, Union Church and Whites Chapel. Each shares the fabled history of the region, with the lives and times of the residents documented in 10 historical markers — perfect destinations for curious-minded history buffs.

The unique character of the churches, cemeteries and schools are documented in the markers and monuments

spanning a timeline starting in the late 1800s. Included are White’s Chapel Cemetery, White’s Chapel Methodist Church, Lonesome Dove Baptist Church and Cemetery, Absalom H. Chivers Cemetery, Thomas Easter Cemetery and the Jellico Community. The Carroll School marker tells the stories of oneroom school houses throughout the area, including the Dove School, founded in 1847.

Texas history sparkles with tales of legendary leaders – and outlaws. The infamous Bonnie Parker and Clyde Darrow had family ties to Southlake. On Easter Sunday in 1934, at the intersection of Texas 114 and Dove Road, the couple, or a member of their gang, shot and killed two highway patrol officers. One of the officers was about to be married; his brideto-be wore her wedding outfit to his funeral. An historical monument marks the spot today.

With an abundance of timber in its earliest days, it’s no surprise that history stands tall in Southlake’s Log House. The one-room cabin was made from two existing structures built in the 1850s and 1860s. The home is situated behind the historically significant Bunker Hill, once considered the highest point in the city, and a likely lookout point for travelers, settlers and perhaps Native Americans.

Southlake Historical Society is a treasure-trove for visitors and anyone studying the heritage of the region. The society regularly sponsors educational exhibits and exciting events like the annual cemetery tour, where history springs to life in reenactments. The society has earned numerous kudos for its outstanding work, including the National Historic Preservation Award from the Captain Molly Corbin Chapter of the DAR, Grapevine. n
