President’s WELCOME Dear Chamber Member, I am very privileged to be serving as the current president of the South Suburban Chamber. As the region continues its outstanding development and growth, the Chamber continues to support the new and expanding businesses in Oak Creek, Franklin and the surrounding communities. In the past year, the Chamber has continued to grow its membership base through one-on-one contact and social media, networking breakfasts, lunches and business after hours events. We’re also listening to members and developing services and offerings to meet their business needs:  The Manufacturers’ Council and its Heavy Metal Tours, held at the ECAM Center at MATC each October, offers high school students the opportunity to learn about great careers in manufacturing.  The Chamber sponsors annual State of the Cities programs with the mayors of both Oak Creek and Franklin.  The Annual Legislative Update with the region’s state representatives gives the members a first-hand report on the activities in state government. These initiatives, among many others, help strengthen our position as a regional Chamber, now in our 15th year. Our focus for the future of the Chamber is in the growth of the number of renewing members; developing new members; and expanding the number of Chamber offerings. Our growth is not only in our ever-expanding membership, but also in its growing list of benefits. In addition to our networking opportunities, the ABLE lunches and business after hours events with five other Chambers, the annual awards dinner and the summer golf outing, we are growing the number of ribbon cuttings, legislative meetings and

volunteer opportunities for our members. Check out our website at www.southsuburbanchamber.com for more information on our many events and activities. As we move forward, the mission statement of the Chamber provides us with a clear direction: The South Suburban Chamber is a business organization whose purpose is to promote the interests of our members and to enhance the regional business climate, economy and community. As we celebrate the businesses that continue to enrich our community, we challenge each other to make our business community stronger, healthier and better.

Community INTRODUCTION

O

ak Creek and Franklin are two of the fastest growing communities in Wisconsin with a combined population of about 70,000. Oak Creek is located along the western shore of Lake Michigan in the southeast corner of Milwaukee County and adjacent to the City of Milwaukee. Oak Creek shares its western border with Franklin at 27th Street. Oak Creek is developing the Drexel Town Square at Drexel and Howell avenues as a mixed-use destination, with a civic center, retail, housing and dining options. The new I-94 Interchange at Drexel Avenue provides convenient access to both the cities of Oak Creek and Franklin, including the new IKEA that will open in 2018. Franklin and Oak Creek residents enjoy both the suburban and rural atmosphere while, at the same time, taking advantage of the services, professional sports and cultural activities of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. Both communities share a commitment to planned growth while preserving the best of their rural atmosphere.

are also the hardest to get. West Bend. Insurance you buy when you can’t afford anything less. Your business didn’t grow overnight. It came from years of hard work, confidence in what you could do, and making smart decisions. That’s why an insurance policy from West Bend makes sense. It protects your valuable and hard-earned business so you can focus on doing what you do best. And it’s all backed by the knowledge and experience of an independent insurance agent.

History of OAK CREEK & FRANKLIN

T

he two communities of Oak Creek and Franklin both had their beginnings in the 1830s when immigrants primarily from Europe settled in this heavily forested area with its rocky soil, plentiful wildlife, numerous streams, wetlands and Lake Michigan on the eastern boundary. Both Oak Creek and Franklin now boast of industrial parks and a diverse business base of industry, services and many solid residential communities.

8

Oak Creek and Franklin were both incorporated as cities in the mid-1950s. In the following years, the population of each city has grown to more than 35,000 and continue to be among the fastest growing cities in the state of Wisconsin.

Business BUSINESS OF THE YEAR

B

lack Bear Bottling Group, LLC of Oak Creek, one of the Midwest’s premier soft drink bottlers, has been named the South Suburban Chamber of Commerce’s Business of the Year. Black Bear employs 65 people and is the company that is responsible for the glass and plastic bottling of perennial favorites like Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Dr. Pepper and Green River, as well as newer, trendier sparkling waters, still waters and soft drinks with names like WBC Craft Sodas, Caruso’s Legacy, Black Bear, Steven’s Point Brewery’s “The Point” soft drinks, Cascade Ice, Hint and Claire Baie. They also produce boxed syrups for use in vending machines and bottle private label soft drinks for Target and others, said Pete Caruso, president and one of four partners in the LLC. “Ninety-nine percent of what we produce is carbonated drinks, but we do produce Claire Baie, a purified drinking water, in partnership with the city of Oak Creek,” Caruso said. Black Bear Bottling has a 100,000-square-foot production facility in Oak Creek, as well as a 65,000-square-foot warehouse. They also rent another 60,000-square-foot warehouse near the Mitchell International Airport. Black Bear Bottling was founded by Louis Patmont as a spring water bottling company during the early 1920s. His operation was located in St. Francis and Patmont named the company after the black bear cub that he kept as a pet. His company quickly evolved into a soft drink bottling company. In 1961, Ester and Peter Caruso purchased the business from Patmont. “My grandfather lived close to the bottling company. He had just sold his dry cleaning business and his three sons were ready to graduate from high school, so he purchased the 10,000-square-foot bottling company to put them to work. They bottled drinks in seven-, 12- and 24-ounce returnable glass bottles then and also had a convenience store nearby where they sold beer, wine, liquor and snacks,” Caruso said. In the mid-1990s, the Carusos shifted to bottling most of their soft drinks in plastic bottles. In 2001, Pete Caruso purchased the company from his father and uncles and moved it to Oak Creek, which was closer to the interstate for more convenient shipping and where he had room to expand. That is when the company began fully-automated bottling using both plastic and glass and also expanded into the “bag in a box” syrup for fountain dispensers and vending machines.

10

In 2010, Black Bear Bottling went through a major overhaul of the Oak Creek location to achieve a Level 2 certification from the Safe Quality Food Institute, a globally recognized and accepted quality management system in food industry. They did so to comply with the requests of some of their national customers and achieved the certification with a 97 percent rating, which is the highest category of scoring. By achieving this certification, Black Bear Bottling Group, LLC is now able to provide a wide variety of packaging options to customers including unique pack sizes for both plastic and glass bottles. Black Bear also has the capability of providing start-up batches to customers who want to test new flavors or brand new lines. “We are always trying to adapt to changes in the market by looking at new flavor profiles and adjusting our caloric counts, and we are always seeking out the next great product out there that is looking for a bottler,” Caruso said. “One of my partners in Illinois owns a number of flavors like Green River and he has asked us to take over the bottling of some of them. Green River, for instance, has been around since 1919,” he continued. “We are also a contract bottler for Pepsi, following all of their formulas and dictates, but we only bottle in glass for them.” Other drinks are much newer. For instance, flavored sparkling water became popular about five years ago, Caruso said, and that is when Black Bear began to bottle some of those – like Sparkling Ice Essence. “The popularity of flavored sparkling waters is still growing. In fact, it is really big out East and is just starting to become popular in the Midwest,” Caruso noted. Black Bear Bottling Group LLC is located at 2025 W. South Branch Blvd. in Oak Creek. For more information, visit www.blackbearbottling. com or call (414) 302-5660. This South Suburban area has become one of the region’s top business destinations. With a wide range of businesses, from locally owned firms to Fortune 500 companies, the area is well positioned to continue as a statewide and mid-west center of economic influence. While the area’s early manufacturing heritage remains strong, the economy has diversified over the years and Oak Creek and Franklin continue to welcome businesses to set up operations here.

Nucor truly invests in the community, but it also invests in its employees and their families. Every child of a Nucor teammate receives $3,000 per year to attend college or a trade school. The company is not only a leader in technology and innovation, but it is also a company that is committed to the environment, to reducing air and noise pollution, improving neighborhood aesthetics, and is always insuring the safety of its workers. The company believes in the team approach to their success. Employees are empowered to make decisions and are rewarded for safety, quality and productivity.

KRONES INC. Krones supports breweries and beverage producers in the food industries, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics industries. The company provides fully integrated packaging and bottling line systems. It is the U.S. subsidiary of Krones AG, Germany. Every fourth bottle in the world comes through a Krones machine. Since then, net sales have grown to more than $2 billion last year. The workforce has increased by about five percent per year to a total today of 550 employees. As a Chamber member, Krones has been a strong partner with the Chamber’s Heavy Metal Tour for high school students and opens their plant for tours. They have also welcomed high school students in work-study programs.

Health

& WELLNESS

T

he South Suburban communities are well served by high-quality health care facilities and providers. This commitment to a healthy lifestyle is evident by the programs of the health departments and by the many fitness and health care facilities in Oak Creek and Franklin. Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare’s hospital in Franklin has a full range of inpatient and outpa-

tient services, which includes the Midwest Orthopedic Specialty Hospital. The hospital includes specialties in emergency medicine, urgent and walk-in care, surgery, radiology, cardiac diagnostics, medical imaging and laboratory, pulmonary care, headache care and complete rehabilitation care. The main facility features a six-bed ICU, 24-hour emergency care, surgery center, physicians’ offices and a retail pharmacy. Aurora Health Care, a private, nonprofit health care provider, also has a strong presence in the community. Aurora St. Luke’s Health Center–Franklin, features a full range of primary care services and ancillary services including urgent care, pharmacy, radiology and specialty programs. The Aurora Women’s Pavilion in Franklin provides internal medicine and neurology services to OB/GYN patients as well as pain management and general surgery. Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin is constructing a facility in the Drexel Town Square to be completed sometime next year. Many independent clinic and private physician practices in the wide range of medical care can be found in the south suburban area. The fitness clubs and community-based recreation programs all strive to keep the residents fit and healthy.

Senior LIVING

B

oth Oak Creek and Franklin are active multi-generational communities that have invested greatly in the education of the youth of the communities, but also in the long-time residents of the area. Senior-focused groups include the Interfaith Older Adult Program, the Franklin Senior Citizens, Senior Travel Program and the Senior Walking Club. Oak Creek’s Forever Young Club also offers social, travel

and health programs for its members. Some of the senior living residences offer active and independent living choices, while others offer more assistance with needs of daily living. Additional residential options are also available in the surrounding communities and also for in-home care, companionship, memory care and respite care services. Oak Creek and Franklin offer many excellent resources for seniors to retire in their own communities and enjoy their retirement.
