Economic Development

Exciting new developments and continued enhancements of existing commercial areas can be found throughout Skokie. From the thriving Westfield Old Orchard area to booming Touhy Avenue, within iconic Downtown Skokie and the renowned Illinois Science + Technology Park, and along Dempster Street, Skokie Boulevard and other major thoroughfares, highly favorable investments are everywhere, according to Leslie Murphy, economic development specialist.

A number of business districts throughout the community are experiencing redevelopment, revitalization and resurgence. Building permit activity in Skokie for 2016 continued its robust trend of recent years, and 2017 is on pace to be another record-breaking year!

DOWNTOWN SKOKIE Residents and visitors continue to rediscover and enjoy all that pedestrian-friendly Downtown Skokie offers, with the eclectic mix of colorful street furniture (check out the bright red Downtown Skokie benches), teal “S” bike racks, yellow accents on bus shelters and eyecatching exterior murals. Downtown also offers easy access to public transit via the CTA Yellow Line (Oakton Station), plenty of free parking and recently completed village TIF-funded infrastructure improvements, including new street lighting, sidewalks with paver accents, enhanced landscaping, way-finding signage and more.

Downtown Skokie is currently home to over 23 ethnic and traditional restaurants (including several Michelin-rated establishments), thanks in

part to the village’s special incentive program to help attract new and enhance existing restaurants to the area. New Vietnamese, Italian, Latino, European and Indian eateries have recently been added to the already diverse culinary Downtown Skokie scene. Longtime popular restaurants such as Village Inn Sports Bar, Tub Tim Thai, Alexander’s, and El Fuego Mexican Cuisine continue to enjoy great success.

Distinctive new retailers have opened up in recent months, including Panino Blitz, Sushi Hanna Café, Law Offices of Demetrius Trivizas, Imperial Realty, Metro PCS Cellular, SAWA and Ignite Gaming, joining the many established businesses in the downtown shopping district, such as Marge’s Flowers, Skokie Ace Hardware, North Branch Yoga, Crafty Beaver, Edward Jones Investments, Print Xpress, and Aw Yeah! Comics.

American Landmark Properties plans to produce an additional 136,000 square feet of office and wet lab space in addition to the already leased 450,000 square feet at the park, which employs approximately 1,500 workers.

Across from the mall, HomeGoods is now open for business at The Shops at Orchard Place, while Burlington Coat Factory, Bob’s Discount Furniture, Culver’s Frozen Custard, Chick fil-A and AAA Travel recently opened their doors along Skokie Boulevard. MUSUEMS The Skokie Holocaust Museum & Education Center, a 65,000-square-foot building designed by renowned Chicago architect Stanley Tigerman, also draws visitors from near and far and offers exhibits and educational programs. The museum’s permanent exhibition tells the story of the Jews and other minority groups who were persecuted in the Holocaust, with over 500 extraordinary artifacts, documents and photographs.

Meet Community Animal Rescue Effort Community Animal Rescue Effort got its start 30 years ago as a small group of people dedicated to saving homeless cats and dogs in Evanston. Now this allvolunteer, not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) organization will be expanding its mission to the North Shore. The Village of Skokie is known for its many festivals and celebrations – filling the calendar with more fests than any other North Shore community. The community bubbles with excitement and an abundance of special events throughout the entire year!

APRIL

Celebrations begin with Skokie’s Spring Greening. The event, which just finished its seventh year, promotes sustainable and green living. Features include a recycling event, an indoor fair featuring green products and services, the sale of repurposed crafts, family activities and music.

MAY The Skokie Festival of Cultures celebrates Skokie’s rich diversity. Since its inception in 1991, the event has become one of the premier ethnic festivals in the state, attracting more than 38,000 visitors each year. Guests enjoy two days of ethnic folk music and dance, food, unique arts, children’s games, a merchandise grand bazaar and dozens of cultural booths.

JUNE Celebrating its 10th year, the Taste of Skokie Valley features the mouthwatering flavors of Skokie’s finest restaurants and specialty shops.

The celebration of gourmet food at the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts in Skokie is a charitable event co-sponsored by the Rotary Club of Skokie Valley and the Chamber of Commerce, benefiting various community causes.

Wednesdays on the Green is presented by the Skokie Chamber of Commerce & Industry in cooperation with the Village of Skokie, Skokie Park District, Skokie Public Library and the Downtown Skokie Merchants Alliance to bring another summer of free festivities beginning at 7 p.m. from June to August.

Bring a blanket or folding chair to enjoy a variety of musical entertainment and family fun. The sounds of summer come alive in this wonderful open-air venue. In addition, many Downtown Skokie restaurants offer specials and dining discounts on Wednesday nights throughout the summer.

JULY The North Shore Festival of the Arts attracts more than 90,000 art lovers to the Skokie community each July. The annual event features an abundance of fine artwork, live music and more. Situated at the outdoor Westfield Old Orchard shopping mall, the event benefits the Skokie Chamber of Commerce & Industry. This Festival is organized by Amdur Productions and is one of the finest juried Art Festivals in the Chicagoland Metropolitan Area.

AUGUST Skokie’s Backlot Bash, closes the summer season, draws 55,000-60,000 people to an action-packed downtown summer street festival. The name “Backlot” pays tribute to downtown Skokie’s heritage as a major silent film industry back lot set between 1907 and 1915.

Each year, the Backlot Bash will feature more than 15 hours of free live music – both regional and national acts – on a main stage. The event also features an amusement park/carnival, 5K run, silent movies at the historic Skokie Theatre, classic auto show, business expo and sidewalk sale, teen activities, bingo, food and beer, the Rotary Club pancake breakfast and more.
