THE HISTORY OF ROYSE CITY

Garrett Burgess Griffin Royse, better known as Byrd Royse, was born in Adair County, Kentucky, on Jan. 31, 1838, to William and Mary Stone Royse. He was the seventh of 14 children.

Royse was proud of the fact that he served the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He served with the 19th Regiment Missouri Infantry.

Around 1850, Royse’s future grandmotherin-law and her sons bought several tracts of land that were later to be known as Royse City. He married Mrs. McCasland’s granddaughter on Aug. 8, 1880. They remained married until Royse’s death in 1928. His wife, Nancy, died seven years later.

Around 1886, Royse platted the town site and sold the first lot to Alf Reese and his nephew Albert Royse. About that same time, Royse was instrumental in getting the MK&T Railroad line brought from Greenville to Dallas through Rockwall County.

Family legend has it that Royse informed the MK&T Railroad people that he would donate the land for a train station if they would call it Royse City.

After the lots were sold and land in and around Royse City were selling pretty high, the Royse family sold their part and, in 1893, joined about 100,000 others in the Oklahoma Land Rush. Royse got quite a bit of land in Custer County near Foss, Oklahoma. He and his wife resided there until their deaths.

They are both buried in the Stafford Cemetery near Foss.

In the early 1920s, the modes of transportation were walking and horseback. As the cotton and sorghum industries grew, cars, trucks and other modes of modern transportation were introduced to Royse City. Most of the brick buildings that you see here are still in use today.

The building that currently houses the Royse City Museum is on the National Register of Historic Places. It was approved for this designation in 1994.

The museum is located on the first floor, and the Masonic lodge is located on the second floor.

The building was designed by W.A. Kinzey and constructed by J.E. Harris. The two-story building reflects the influences of the Classical Revival style that was popular in the early 20th century. The history of the lodge and the city are intertwined since the very early days.

At least two mayors, including Newt Burton (1938-1944) and Roy Cookston (1944-1950) have also been members of the lodge. Many aldermen also have been lodge members.

The Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star still hold monthly activities on the second floor.

The fire department was moved to a new building in 1980 and the exterior changes that were made to accommodate the fire trucks were removed at that time.

BOY SCOUTS TROOP 312 – ROYSE CITY The Royse City Boy Scouts Troop 312 was incorporated as the first troop in Rockwall County on Oct. 21, 1913. The original certificate is displayed at our local museum and is signed by the Chief Scout Executive, James E. West, who was one of the original founders of the Boy Scouts of America.

Other prominent signatures on the Charter include Honorary President Woodrow Wilson, Honorary Vice President William H. Taft and Honorary Vice President Theodore Roosevelt, our nation’s 25th, 26th and 27th presidents. President Woodrow Wilson was elected president in 1913, at which time

he invited the Boy Scouts of America to participate as volunteers to assist visitors and officials with the inauguration parade. This proud tradition of service continues to this day.

The troupe meets Tuesdays at 7 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Royse City.

HISTORIC CALABOOSE WHAT IS A CALABOOSE? The word Calaboose was taken from the 18th century Spanish word Calabozo that means jail or dungeon. From the early days of the state until the early part of the 20th century, the calaboose was common in Texas and the rest of the country. It is a gift to us from history and not just an old brick building.

Why is it important? Our Calaboose was built around 1911.

Minor offenders would be held briefly and released while the more serious criminals were held until being taken to Dallas. There are only 109 recorded in the State of Texas at this time. Royse City has the only one in Rockwall County. The preservation of historic buildings is a one-way street.

There is no chance to renovate or to save a historic site once it’s gone.

What does the saving the Calaboose Jail mean for Royse City?

This is a way for Royse City to use historic preservation as an avenue to share our unique story. Having a destination attraction is a sure way to promote our city.

The calaboose is that attraction that will draw people to our historic downtown for its uniqueness.

What happens if we don’t save it? Our history will be destroyed. Preservation is key to remembering and honoring our past. Tourists



and longtime residents should be able to witness the aesthetic and cultural history of this area. We need these old buildings to maintain a sense of permanency and heritage.

How can people get involved? We want school children to visit it, we want tourists to come off the highway to see what a Calaboose is, and we want our community to take pride in ownership of this piece of history that was left to us. The renovation to save the jail is costly and we are holding several fundraisers at this time, one of which will put your name or your businesses name on a brick that will be laid at the site that will be viewed by the generations to come.

CITY LAKE PARK A peaceful place to take a walk, have a picnic, go fishing or host an outdoor event.

Clean trails that wrap around the pond, new playground equipment, covered and uncovered picnic areas are all available.

WALKER-HAWK SPLASH PARK Located along State Highway 66, the sixacre park includes a pavilion, playground and splash water area and is the perfect setting for those hot summer family outings. Open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

STONE RIVER GOLF CLUB The 18-hole Stone River golf club features 6,432 yards of golf from the longest tees, for a par of 72. Your golfing skills will be tested over rolling, green acres highlighted by glistening ponds and groves of trees. Stone River Golf club caters to dedicated golfers and those just picking up the game of golf.

Multiple tee boxes are friendly and forgiving for your novice players.

WALKER-HAWK SPORTS COMPLEX The Walker-Hawk Sports Complex contains four softball/baseball fields, a playground, a concession stand and a soccer/ football field. Thanks to a grant through the Texas Parks and Wildlife and the CDC, the city was able to connect the sports complex to the recently renovated Old Mill Park. A 3,750-foot trail connects the two parks and offers two shade structures along the trail with benches.

BECKNELL PARK Named after lifetime resident and previous Mayor Don Becknell, this tranquil park is located on Houston Street in the historic district. It is a perfect walking or biking destination for those living downtown.

MILITARY HERITAGE COLLECTION OF N. TEXAS This museum houses and maintains a range of exhibits, including military uniforms, weapons, military models, equipment and armored and soft-skinned vehicles. The exhibits are supplemented by audio-visual displays and an extensive collection of original artwork and prints.

Admission to the museum is free.

The museum is committed to the concept of “hands-on history,” which gives visitors the opportunity to interact and connect with exhibits. Tank rides also are available.

THE CEDARS DISC GOLF COURSE The creation of Leadership Rockwall Class of 2013 and built with the help of donations, the course is primarily cut out of Mountain Cedars and requires a great deal of accuracy to score well. The variety of shots are excellent and test your skills with different throws. The course is a challenge to experienced players, yet leaves avenues for beginner players to stay out of trouble.

ROYSE CITY ROTARY FLAG PROGRAM Drive around town on any flag holiday and you will see the streets lined with red, white and blue. The local Rotary group provides a flag in the lawn of local homes and businesses seven times a year for only $35.

FUTURO HOME Located on SH 276, this spaceship designed home has been featured in music videos, photo shoots and short films. Sadly, it has been abandoned for some time and is in great need of repair.

FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Recorded as Texas Historic Landmark No. 5397006144, this fellowship, first known as the “Methodist Episcopal Church, South,” was organized in 1887. Services were held in a schoolhouse until 1890 when land on Church Street was acquired from R. A. McCasland for the first church building in Royse City. This structure, erected in 1904,
