5 Stories of Hispanic American Military Heroes

ThroughoutU.S. history, Hispanic Americans have served proudly and bravely in all branches of our nation’s military.

Learn about five courageous Hispanic American service members who put their duty before themselves:

1. Marcelino Serna

In search of work and a better life, Marcelino Serna emigrated from Mexico into the U.S. in 1916, when he was just 20 years old.

He settled in Texas where he worked while undocumented PHOTO THE DAILY MORNING OASIS for several years un- MARCELINO til federal authorities SERNA detained him to verify his war draft status. Despite being a Mexican citizen, andto show his dedication to becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen, Serna begged the officials to allow him to enlist in the U.S. Army, rather than deport him. At the time, the horrific conditions of the trenches of World War I were common knowledge.

Consequently, volunteers to enlist were not always easy to come by. Impressed by Serna’s offer, the federal officials allowed him to join the Army.

After basic training, Serna was shipped off to Europe, but once he arrived, Army officials realized Serna was Mexican, not American, and offered to discharge him. Serna refused and insisted on serving.

While engaged with the enemy in France, Serna noticed a wounded German sniper and followed him back to his trench, where Serna threw three grenades, killing 26 enemy soldiers and capturing 24 more. Later, Gen. John J. Pershing awarded him with the Distinguished Service Cross, the second-highest U.S. military decoration. He was the first Hispanic American to receive the Distinguished Service Cross. Ferdinand Foch, Supreme Commander of the Allied Troops, also awarded Serna with the French Croix de Guerre for bravery.

Serna returned home to the U.S. as the most decorated soldier from Texas.

In 1924, he became a U.S. citizen and settled in El Paso. He was never awarded the Medal of Honor, but there is currently an initiative to posthumously honor him with the award.

2. Joe P. Martínez

Joe P. Martínez was the first Hispanic American (and Coloradoan) to posthumously receive theMedal of Honorfor his actions in World War II. Originally from PHOTO CREDIT U.S. ARMY New Mexico, Martínez JOE P. grew up in Colorado MARTÍNEZ and was drafted into the Army when he was 21 years old. He fought in the final days of the spring 1943 Battle of Attuon the Aleutian Islands.

On May 26, Martínez and his regiment were pinned down by enemy fire. In an attempt to secure a key defensive position from the Japanese, Martínez led several assaults on enemy-filled trenches. In his determination, Martínez sometimes eliminated entire trenches of enemies entirely by himself. The other men, inspired by his bravery, followed him.

Martínez was mortally wounded when approaching the final enemy-occupied trench, but the defensive position was successfully taken by U.S. forces, leading to the end of the battle and – ultimately – Japanese occupation of the Aleutian Islands.

Auxiliary Corps; she was the first Hispanic American to serve in what would later be known as the Women’s Army Corps.

During WWII, the Army specifically recruited bilingual Hispanic women to work in cryptology, communications and interpretation. Contreras-Bozak volunteered to go to North Africa with one of these companies despite the extreme risk (at the beginning of the U.S. involvement in the war, service women were not treated the same as service men and did not have the same protections under international law as male soldiers if captured).

Upon arrival in country,Contreras-Bozak was assigned to the Army Signal Corps, where she sent and received coded messages between Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower’s headquarters in Algiers and the battlefield in Tunisia. Their encampment regularly came under German fire , but Contreras-Bozak continued to work for the general until an infection sent her to a stateside hospital in 1945. She was discharged as a technical sergeant, today’s equivalent of a sergeant (E-4), and received the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, two Battle Stars, a World War II Victory Medal, an American Campaign Medal, a WAAC Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal throughout her time in the Army.

As the U.S. prepared to enter World War II, the government put out a call for women to take on new roles beyond the home. Today, we know these working women in World War II as Rosie the RivetPHOTO:THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS ers, WAVES, SPARs IN AUSTIN and others.

CARMEN These new roles CONTRERASwere a big change BOZAK for women in American society, especially among the Hispanic American population. Back in the 1940s, Hispanic women were often discouraged within their own communities to take on roles outside of domestic life. But for Carmen Contreras-Bozak, a Puerto Rican from New York City, thecall to duty was more importantthan a traditional, domestic lifestyle.

Inspired by the War Departmentand her own sense of patriotism, Contreras-Bozak decided to enlist in the Women’s Army

Angel Mendez was a Puerto Rican U.S. Marine who was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for his actions in the Vietnam War. Originally from New York City, Mendez spent most of his childhood in an or- ANGEL MENDEZ phanage on Staten Island. He enlisted in the Marine Corps immediately after graduating from high school and was deployed to Vietnam after bootcamp.

While on a search and destroy mission, Mendez and his platoon were suddenly attacked by the Viet Cong.Mendez led a charge to assist Marines who were pinned down by enemy fire, exposing himself to attack. His platoon commander, Lt. Ronald D. Castille – who would go on to serve as Chief Justice on the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania – was severely wounded and unable to move. Mendez shielded Castille with his own body while

attempting to bandage the wound. Then, he picked up Castille and carried him behind friendly lines.

As he did so, Mendez was shot in the shoulder. Two more Marines rushed to help him, but Mendez refused to let go of Castille and continued to shield Castille with his body during the retreat until Mendez himself was mortally wounded.

Mendez was posthumously promoted to sergeant and awarded the prestigious Navy Cross. A post office on Staten Island, where he grew up, was named in his honor and there is now a campaign underway for him to be posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

5. Richard Edward Cavazos

Richard Edward Cavazos left behind a long legacy for Hispanic Americans – he was the first Mexican American to reach the rank of brigadier general and the first Hispanic American fourstar general in the U.S. RICHARD Army.

While serving EDWARD as a first lieutenant CAVAZOS in the Korean War, Cavazosled his company on three assaults on the enemy while under heavy fire.Each time, his men destroyed enemy equipment and eliminated enemy assailants. Even when UN was ordered to withdraw from the fighting area, Cavazos remained in the area, exposed to enemy fire, to search for missing men. One at a time, he carried five of his men behind friendly lines, refusing treatment for his own wounds until he was sure that the outpost was clear.

For these actions, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. Later, in the Vietnam War, he was awarded with yet another Distinguished Service Cross for his heroic actions in leadership while leading an assault on Viet Cong trenches.

Cavazos retired from the Army in 1984, after thirty-three years of service with his final command as head of the U.S. Army Forces Command. Throughout his career, he was also awarded aSilver Star, two Legion of Merit awards, five Bronze Stars with valor, a Purple Heart, a Combat Infantry Badge and a Parachutist Badge.

Barnes & Noble is set to open its Algonquin Commons location on Wednesday, the latest in a series of new tenants at the shopping center.

This new bookstore, located at 1802 S. Randall Road, replaces the Barnes & Noble in the Spring Hill Mall in West Dundee, which closed Oct. 22, according to a news release.

The opening of the Algonquin location will be marked at 10 a.m. Wednesday with a ribbon cutting with Chicago-area mystery authors Lori Rader-Day, known for “Death at Greenway” and “Little Pretty Things,” and Susanna Calkins of the Lucy Campion series. Saturday will feature a visit by Victoria Thompson, another mystery author from the Chicago area.

Barnes & Noble is one of several new businesses on track to open at Algonquin Commons, which Red Mountain Group Inc. purchased by this year. The California-based developer plans to invest about $30 million into the shopping center, through renovation and re-tenanting, the village of Algonquin said.

Since its acquisition, Algonquin Commons saw its vacancy rate drop to 11% from 25%, said Jason Shallcross, the village’s community development director, adding that Red Mountain Group is doing “an incredible job.”

“With a planned reinvestment into the center valued between $30 (to) $50 million dollars to be unveiled in the near future, we are confident the center’s vacancy rate will be in the low single-digits very soon,” Shallcross said.

The new Barnes & Noble sits next to Trader Joe’s, one of the businesses that predates Red Mountain Group’s acquisition.

“Our relocation allowed us to reset and refocus our store around books and the love of reading, and we can’t wait to welcome shoppers here,” store manager Teresa Noble said in a statement. “This new store is designed with the local customer in mind, and my team and

A NEW Barnes & Noble store will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Algonquin Commons shopping center on Randall Road.

Fogo de Chão steakhouse is set to open its fourth Chicago-area location on Tuesday, Nov. 23, in the newly developed Oak Brook Commons, across from Oak Brook Center.

Fogo’s Oak Brook location, designed in partnership with Dallas-based global design consultant firm Harrison, will feature dry-aged meat lockers for in-house aging, soaring wine case displays, natural wood finishes and dramatic chandeliers across a vaulted ceiling. The dining room will be anchored by an open-air churrasco bar for guests to dine while gaucho

chefs display the culinary art of churrasco as they butcher, prepare and grill different cuts of meat over an open flame.

The new restaurant will also feature an expansive patio with firepits for al fresco churrasco dining.

La OMS teme una nueva ola de contagios de covid con la llegada del frío Los casos de covid, que la semana pasada aumentaron globalmente tras dos meses de descensos, podrían seguir subiendo especialmente en el hemisferio norte con la llegada de los meses fríos, ha advertido la jefa de la unidad técnica anticovid de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), María Van Kerkhove.

Los casos globales de COVID-19 aumentaron un 4 % la semana pasada después de casi dos meses de descensos, debido principalmente a las nuevas oleadas de contagios en países europeos como Reino Unido, Rusia, Turquía o Ucrania.

La OMS reportó 2,9 millones de contagios entre el 18 y el 24 de octubre, de los que más de la mitad, 1,6 millones, se registraron en Europa.

GOBIERNO DE BIDEN SE DISPONE A TERMINAR CON MPP “TAN PRONTO COMO SEA POSIBLE” secretario estadounidense de Seguridad Nacional, Alejandro Mayorkas.

Janine Trainor Fronteras de la Noticia - EFE El secretario estadounidense de Seguridad Nacional, Alejandro Mayorkas, comunicó el viernes 29 de octubre a las agencias involucradas en migración su decisión de poner fin “tan pronto como sea posible” al programa "Quédate en México" , por el cual decenas de miles de personas que buscaron asilo en Estados Unidos han sido enviadas al país vecino a la espera del desarrollo de sus trámites.

Pero indicó que seguirá cumpliendo la orden de un juez de Texas que requiere la implementación del programa, hasta que se dé “una decisión judicial final para anular” ese mandato.

El Gobierno del ahora expresidente Donald Trump inició a fines de 2019 esa política, conocida formalmente como Protocolos de Protección al Migrante (MPP, en inglés), haciendo caso omiso del trámite que requiere la ley por el cual los solicitantes de asilo pueden esperar dentro de EE.UU. la resolución de sus casos.

El actual mandatario, Joe Biden, canceló MPP a poco de asumir la Presidencia en enero, pero un juez federal en Texas, en respuesta a la demanda iniciada por ese y otros estados, ordenó en agosto la reanudación del programa.

El juez opinó que la orden por la que se rescindió MPP violó la ley federal administrativa y no tuvo en cuenta los "beneficios" del programa, entre los que citó su presunto efecto disuasorio para potenciales migrantes.

El magistrado ordenó al Gobierno de Biden restaurar el programa, al menos hasta que encuentre una forma de "rescindirlo de forma legal" y hasta que el Ejecutivo tenga la capacidad para detener a los solicitantes de asilo que, en ausencia de esa política, pueden entrar en EE.UU. En cumplimiento de esa decisión judicial, el Gobierno de Biden anunció hace unas semanas que se preparaba para reanudar MPP en noviembre.

Pero en un memorando enviado a los titulares de la Oficina de Aduanas y Protección Fronteriza (CBP), el Servicio de Control de Inmigración y Aduanas (ICE) y el Servicio de Ciudadanía e Inmigración (USCIS), el secretario Mayorkas les comunicó su decisión de poner fin al programa.

Mayorkas admitió que MPP pudo haber llevado a una reducción de los

flujos migratorios. “Pero lo hizo imponiendo costos humanos sustanciales e injustificables a los individuos que quedaron expuestos a daños mientras esperaban en México”, añadió.

“Esta Administración está comprometida con los objetivos de asegurar nuestras fronteras y ofrecer protección a aquellos que huyen de la persecución y la tortura. MPP no es la mejor estrategia ni la preferida para lograr ninguno de esos objetivos”, sostuvo.

Además de la “extrema violencia e inseguridad a manos de las organizaciones criminales trasnacionales” a que están sujetos los solicitantes de asilo mientras aguardan en México, Mayorkas citó “las dificultades que enfrentan para obtener asistencia legal y viajar a las cortes a través de una frontera internacional”.

La Administración de Biden, expuso, “está impulsando una serie de políticas que desalienten la migración irregular a la vez que promueven vías seguras, ordenadas y humanas”.

“Estas políticas, incluyendo los esfuerzos en marcha para reformar nuestro sistema de asilo y abordar las causas de raíz de la migración en la región, buscan resolver problemas que han plagado nuestro sistema de inmigración por décadas, y lograr un cambio sistémico”, manifestó.

El secretario dijo que “habiendo evaluado los beneficios y costos de la implementación previa de MPP”, llegó a la conclusión de que los costos del programa superan por mucho sus beneficios.

“El Departamento continuará cumpliendo el mandato (del juez) de Texas que requiere la implementación y aplicación de buena fe de MPP. Pero la terminación de MPP será implementada tan pronto como sea posible después de una decisión judicial final para anular el mandato de Texas”, puntualizó.

“Criaturas de un Mundo de Ensueño” llegarán a DuPage en 2022 La instalación en Cantigny Park contará con cautivantes “alebrijes” en una celebración de la artesanía mexicana y la diversidad cultural.

1 DE NOVIEMBRE DE 2021— El consorcio de Cantigny Park, la oficina de visitantes y convenciones del condado de DuPage y el Centro Cultural Mexicano DuPage anunció hoy una exposición de arte al aire libre por cinco meses con docenas de animales míticos inspirados en el folclore mexicano. “Alebrijes: Criaturas de un Mundo de Ensueño” se estrena en Cantigny el 1 de junio de 2022.

La palabra alebrijes, pronunciada ahleh-bree-hehs, se refiere a criaturas imaginarias que poseen elementos de diferentes animales. Estos se originaron en la década de 1930 a partir de los vívidos sueños del artista de la Ciudad de México, Pedro Linares.

La tradición artística de los alebrijes ganó popularidad en los Estados Unidos con Coco, la película de Disney / Pixar de 2017.

Los visitantes descubrirán fantásticas esculturas de alebrije de varios tamaños a lo largo de los jardines y terrenos de Cantigny, el cual está ubicado a 35 millas al oeste de Chicago en Wheaton. Algunas de las criaturas podrían aparecer en lugares sorprendentes. “’Criaturas de un Mundo de Ensueño’ será una celebración de la cultura mexicana en todo el parque, y una visita obligada para las familias en toda la región,” dijo Timothy P. Knight, presidente y director ejecutivo de la Fundación Robert R. McCormick y Cantigny Park.

La Fundación McCormick, con sede en Chicago, la organización matriz de Cantigny, otorgó una subvención al Centro Cultural Mexicano DuPage para ayudar a hacer posible la exposición, junto con fondos de patrocinio del Museo Nacional de Arte Mexicano en Pilsen. La Oficina de Convenciones y Visitantes de DuPage está trabajando con el Departamento de Comercio y Oportunidades Económicas de Illinois (Oficina de Turismo de Illinois) para asegurar recursos adicionales y destinar dólares de mercadeo para promover el evento.

Seis artistas consagrados de la Ciudad de México, reclutados por el Centro Cultural Mexicano, se han inscrito para crear los alebrijes destinados a Cantigny. Los artesanos pertenecen a un colectivo que participa en la internacionalmente conocida, La Noche de los Alebrijes, un desfile y festival en la Ciudad de México que se realiza cada año durante esta época en celebración del Día de los Muertos.

Treinta criaturas pequeñas (de aproximadamente 5 pies de largo) serán creadas

en México y enviadas a DuPage. Sin embargo, 18 criaturas más grandes (de hasta 13 pies de alto y 8 pies de ancho) se construirán y pintarán en estudios locales. Los artistas vivirán y trabajarán en DuPage durante los tres meses previos a la inauguración de la exposición.

Los socios creen que “criaturas de un mundo de ensueño” puede dar un impulso a la industria hotelera local. Los hoteles y restaurantes de la zona se vieron muy afectados por la pandemia y todavía se encuentran en proceso de recuperación.

“Qué maravillosa oportunidad es esta para celebrar la diversidad cultural del condado de DuPage a través del arte,” dijo Beth Marchetti, directora ejecutiva de la Oficina de Convenciones y Visitantes de DuPage.

“Al igual que la exposición de Frida Kahlo en 2021, los alebrijes atraerán a residentes, turistas y negocios. Podemos aprovechar esto de muchas maneras positivas.”

Antes y durante la exposición, la programación pública y educativa en DuPage será extensa, desde demostraciones de estudio y charlas de los artistas hasta conferencias sobre la herencia y la cultura mexicana.

Además, Cantigny mismo anticipa numerosos eventos especiales, como recorridos por jardines temáticos y cenas, conciertos de músicos mexicanos y talleres de arte para niños.

“Estamos muy entusiasmados de compartir este trabajo con la comunidad,” dijo Fernando Ramírez, presidente y fundador del Centro Cultural Mexicano DuPage, con sede en la ciudad de West Chicago. “Es gratificante ver que nuestra colaboración y asociación con artistas mexicanos conlleva a la instalación de una exhibición tan importante como esta. A la gente le va a encantar y van a aprender algunas cosas fascinantes sobre las tradiciones culturales de México.”

La entrada a “Alebrijes: Criaturas de un Mundo de Ensueño” se incluirá con la tarifa de estacionamiento regular de Cantigny, actualmente $5 por automóvil ($10 fines de semana durante el verano). Vicente Fernández tendrá su escultura de dos toneladas en bronce

Ahora se espera lo mejor para el cantante y es por ello por lo que algunos proyectos que quedaron detenidos retoman su desarrollo, como

lo es la estatua que lo representará en su rancho.

Se dio a conocer que el rancho de Vicente Fernández, en Jalisco, próximamente podrá tener una nueva atracción, la cual será una escultura del cantante. Chente habría comenzado este proyecto antes de que comenzara la pandemia, pero su ejecución se ha visto obstaculizada por la pandemia de covid-19 y el accidente del Charro de Huentitán.

“Este proyecto surge hace poco más de año y medio, antes del comienzo de la pandemia… El señor Vicente Fernández estaba interesado en que realizara un retrato escultórico de su persona; así que, por la vinculación y presentación de amigos mutuos, nos reunimos a platicar las posibilidades de la obra. Así llegamos a un acuerdo y se inició el proyecto”, reveló el artista encargado, Sergio Garval, El patriarca de la familia Fernández no habría escatimado en gastos, pues esta obra lo tendría muy emocionado, así que comenzaron a tomar todo tipo de fotografías, se hicieron bocetos y se determinó cuáles serían los elementos que portaría la escultura para re$ejar la esencia del charro.

“Nos entusiasmamos con la idea, y empezamos con la realización de tomas fotográ%cas, bocetos, dibujos, estudios y posteriormente la presentación de varias maquetas. Este proceso llevó alrededor de seis meses; para ese momento estábamos ya inmersos en la incertidumbre y las diversas medidas de la contingencia sanitaria”, comentó Garval.

El escultor mencionó que el retrato del intérprete de Por tu maldito amor medirá cerca de los cuatro metros de altura, pues Chente será representado montando un caballo, con su típica vestimenta y rasgos lo más similares posibles a él.

Esta obra actualmente se encuentra en bocetos y maquetas, pero ya se ha calculado el peso %nal que tendrá cuando sea hecha con bronce: podría llegar a

las dos toneladas.

Acerca del precio, el artista pre%rió reservarse detalles ya que se trata de un trabajo solicitado por Vicente, del cual pre%ere mantenerse al margen de lo que revele el cantante o su familia.

Sergio Garval compartió que el Charro de Huentitán se sintió tan emocionado por el inicio de esta estatua que él mismo colaboró no sólo siendo el modelo, sino haciendo sus propios bocetos en papel.

“El día que tuvimos el primer acercamiento, una sesión donde le realicé un boceto de gran tamaño montado en su caballo allá en su lienzo (...) me dijo: ‘Maestro, présteme su libreta y su lápiz’, y se puso a bocetar la cabeza de un caballo a tres cuartos con su respectiva %rma al %nal, compartiendo conmigo el placer que siente también por la práctica del dibujo”, dijo el jalisciense.

También reveló que Vicente actualmente tiene deseos de visitar al taller para poder ver los avances de su monumento y espera pronto cumplir con esto.

El rancho Los Tres Potrillos, además de ser el hogar del intérprete de Acá entre nos, también es una atracción turística. En este lugar hay caballerizas con cientos de equinos, un lienzo charro, un restaurante de comida típica mexicana, tiendas de artículos especializados y vinaterías. El acceso es gratuito, pero se tiene un control de la cantidad de personas que pueden ingresar al día.

Carlos Morales, Fronteras de la Noticia - hobbyconsolas.com Eternals (Eternos) es la tercera película de Marvel Studios que pertenecerá a la Fase 4 del Universo Cinematográfico de Marvel, tras Viuda Negra y Shang- Chi y la Leyenda de los Diez Anillos y tendrá un matiz muy importante: será la primera en orden cronológico del UCM, ya que se desarrollará miles de años antes del inicio de las aventuras de los superhéroes Marvel en el cine.

La película contará la historia de los seres conocidos como los eternos, una rama de la especie humana que fueron creados hace miles de años por los Celestiales durante sus experimentos y que tuvo como consecuencia la creación de una subespecie malvada: los desviantes. Estos personajes fueron creados en los años 70 por el escritor y dibujante de Marvel Comics Jack Kirby y son, a la vez, la raza de la que desciende el malvado Thanos, de los Titanes.

Poco se sabe sobre el argumento de esta nueva película de superhéroes. Por lo visto en su tráiler, Los Eternos llegaron al planeta Tierra hace millones de años y han estado conviviendo con la humanidad desde entonces sin interferir en el desarrollo de su historia. Hasta que algo les hace cambiar de parecer y deciden salir a la luz.

La película estará dirigida por Chloé Zhao (The Rider) y contará con un reparto de primer nivel, formado por Angelina Jolie (Thena), Richard Madden (Ikaris), Kumail Nanjiani (Kingo), Salma Hayek (Ajax), Brian Tyree Henry (Phastos), Lauren Ridloff (Macary), Lia McHugh (Sprite) y Don Lee (Gilgamesh). El guion, en tanto, correrá de manos de Matthew K. Firpo (director del documental Refuge) y Ryan Firpo (ME vs. U). Los detalles de la trama no se han revelado, pero se ha tanteado la posibilidad de que se inspire en la serie limitada de Neil Gaiman y John Romita Jr, que tuvo una adaptación a formato de película animada la pasada década.

Tras diversos retrasos por la pandemia del Coronavirus, finalmente la película Eternals se estrenará en las salas de cine el próximo 5 de noviembre de 2021 siendo, posiblemente, uno de los estrenos de la Fase 4 más esperados y arriesgados del Universo Cinematográfico de Marvel, por su aparente falta de lazos con otras franquicias.

Carolina Pikacho Fronteras de la Notiica - MacRebur Según los datos, existen en el mundo alrededor de 40 millones de kilómetros de carreteras fabricadas, generalmente, mediante rocas y arenas mezcladas con betún, lo que viene siendo el asfalto que todos conocemos. Pero la empresa escocesa MacRebur ha conseguido desarrollar un tipo de plástico que puede sustituir parte de esa mezcla y que, lo más importante, está formado 100 % por residuos reciclados.

El MR6, así se llama este material, no solo llama la atención por lo novedoso, sino porque es tremendamente sostenible, ya que podría ser la solución para muchos de los desechos plásticos que generamos.

La empresa asegura que puede eliminar el 10% de betún que se utiliza en la fabricación del asfalto convencional y sustituirlo por la mezcla de plástico reciclado. Además, asegura que el material que resulta es hasta un 60 % más fuerte, y su vida útil puede ser un 10 % mayor que la de las carreteras tradicionales.

Aún se están haciendo pruebas, pero parece que si todo va bien podríamos ver la implementación de estas novedosas carreteras en muchos puntos, por ahora, del Reino Unido. ¿Alguna vez habías pensado que podrías circular con tu coche sobre aquel bote de gel que gastaste el año pasado?
