‘Almost as hard as the first day:’ Families of Pratt plant shooting victims reflect 3 years later Since the Henry Pratt shooting Families remember lost loved ones, ensure their legacies help others

By Susan Sarkauskas For Reflejos Axel Parks was just 8 months old when his father was taken from him, shot to death at the Henry Pratt Co. in Aurora three years ago today.

The boy has no memories of his dad. But he is learning about the kind of man Clayton Parks was.

“We mention Clay every day,” said Abby Parks, Clayton’s widow. “(Axel) asks where his father is.”

Five workers and the gunman died during the mass shooting on Feb. 15, 2019.

Another worker and five Aurora police officers were injured.

Parks, of Elgin, was the human resources manager for the facility. He was in a conference room with union chairman Russell Beyer of Yorkville; Josh Pinkard, the plant manager, of Oswego; Timothy Williams, union steward, of Aurora; and Trevor Wehner of Sheridan, who was working his first day as an intern for the human resources department. They were having a disciplinary meeting with a fellow employee when the man pulled out a handgun and started firing.

The gunman then left the room and shot co-worker Vicente Juarez. Next he fired at Aurora police officers as they pursued him throughout the building; he hit five of them.

Eventually, a Naperville police officer, part of a massive mutual-aid response, shot and killed the man.

Williams survived. Parks, Beyer, Pinkard, Wehner and Juarez did not.

At 21 and just three months away from his college graduation, Wehner was the youngest of the victims.

Bonnie Rich, Wehner’s mother, said her son was killed before he could fulfill his dreams. He was awarded his bachelor’s degree posthumously in 2019 from Northern Illinois University.

In his memory, the family created the Trevor Wehner Memorial Scholarship Fund.

It has awarded scholarships to students from Serena, West Aurora and Oswego high schools, and Illinois Valley Community College. The fund is adding NIU students, and Rich hopes to expand the scholarship to other schools. Donations can be made at https://tmwscholarships.com/.

“As we come upon the third anniversary of Trevor’s death, time passes, but not one second goes by that Trevor is not here in our hearts,” Rich said. “The devastating loss of lives at Pratt on Feb. 15 is the tragedy that we live with for the rest of our lives.”

Parks lives with it as well, raising the son her husband barely got to know.

Parks doesn’t go into all the details when she talks to Axel about why his daddy died.

She recognizes “little pieces” of Clay in her son, such as his smile. “That’s very cool

for me to see,” she said. They talk about what Clay liked, including fishing. Axel has a photo of himself fishing at the same spot on a lake where a photograph shows his father fishing years earlier.

Her last conversation with Clay was a silly one, she said, about fish tanks.

“I miss the everyday conversations with somebody that was just my best friend,” Parks said.

Parks works with the Gun Violence Prevention Political Action Committee. She

spoke last year at a ceremony at the Aurora Police Department, where Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed a bill designed to strengthen the process of making sure people prohibited from owning guns don’t get to keep them.

She keeps in touch with Wehner’s parents and follows Pinkard’s widow, Terra, on Facebook.

Parks said she is doing OK navigating life as a single parent.

She praises her neighbors, who join her every year in putting up orange ribbons at

their houses to call awareness to gun violence. A supportive family has been a blessing, she said.

To honor Parks and the other victims, the Aurora Historical Society is again displaying part of the impromptu memorial people set up at Pratt after the shooting.

On display through February at the David L. Pierce Art and History Center, it features the five white crosses erected by the late Greg Zanis, who traveled the nation putting up thousands of crosses at the sites of tragedies.

The city will have a remembrance ceremony at 4 p.m. at the Pierce Center, with Mayor Richard Irvin, Police Chief Keith Cross and Fire Chief Gary Krienitz speaking.

It will be streamed live on the city’s Facebook page.

Parks, however, has no set plans for Tuesday.

“It’s ... almost as hard as the first day,” Parks said. She prefers to focus more on Clay’s birthday on Feb. 26.

She also said people should not worry that mentioning her husband or the shooting will upset her. Abby Parks wants to talk about Clay.

“All of these men,” she said, “it is important to remember them.”

If COVID-19 hospitalizations and other metrics continue to improve, Illinoisans will be able to enter indoor public spaces without face masks on Feb. 28, with some exceptions.

It’s been more than five months since Gov. J.B. Pritzker instituted masking rules on Aug. 30, 2021, as COVID-19 cases and infections rose.

Numerous questions are surfacing about the updated policy. Here are five things to know: 1. The situation is a little complicated. Although Illinois’ indoor face mask mandate goes away on Feb. 28, that doesn’t mean you can waltz into every single shop or business across the state sans face covering.

2. Local jurisdictions can impose their own masking rules as long as they’re more stringent than the state’s. Chicago and Cook County

health department officials indicated Wednesday they expect to follow step with the state, barring a surge in cases or patient numbers.

3. Private businesses and organizations such as houses of worship also may have their own requirements. Among those likely to welcome the change are restaurants and movie theaters.

“We will follow the state and not require face masks once they lift the requirement on Feb 28,” Classic Cinemas CEO Chris Johnson said.

Some retail chains, such as Walgreens, are still mulling over the issue. “We are currently reviewing our policy but have not made any decision at this time,” Walgreens spokesman Fraser Engerman said.

Illinois also mandates masks in: • Health care establishments, including hospitals and clinics.

• Long-term care facilities, such as nursing homes.

• Congregate settings, including prisons or group homes.

• Daycare centers.

5. School districts have been among the most consistent entities enforcing masking rules because of strict state guidelines. But now, thanks to lawsuits working their way through the court system, that consistency is fractured.

Through the Center of Concern’s Chore Housekeeping program, older adults receive assistance with light household cleaning and maintenance projects such as meal preparation, laundry, and

yard work. These services reduce isolation and help older adults remain independent in their homes.

The Memory Cafe program supports people living with dementia and their caregivers. These events provide a comfortable setting to encourage them to spend more time in the community.

Creative programming provides recreation, mutual support, and exchange of helpful resources to support residents coping with memory loss. This program runs at different locations in Niles and Park Ridge.

The Center of Concern also assists residents with accessing COVID-19 vaccinations. Staff can connect people to nearby vaccine locations, provide transportation, or coordinate mobile vaccinations for those who are homebound.

SALUD MENTAL DE ENFERMERAS POR PANDEMIA Carolina Pikakacho Fronteras de la Noticia - EFEsalud La mayor encuesta realizada hasta el momento por el Consejo General de Enfermería, "Radiografía de la situación profesional y emocional de la profesión enfermera" durante la pandemia con 19.300 enfermeras y enfermeros que han contestado entre el 25 de enero y el 1 de febrero de este año. El 60%, y tienen 16 ó más años de experiencia.

La salud mental de la enfermería por la pandemia

El estudio ha preguntado por la afectación a nivel psicológico y mental que han podido experimentar las enfermeras como consecuencia de la pandemia por COVID: depresión, ansiedad, insomnio, estrés y temor o miedo y el 84,7% se ha visto afectada por alguno de estos trastornos.

Descontento e indignación

El 98,7% no siente que su trabajo sea valorado por los políticos ni confían en que les vayan a dar soluciones y como consecuencia el 91,7% cree que es necesario movilizarse para conseguir soluciones a la sobrecarga de trabajo y al agotamiento físico y mental, además de mejorar las condiciones laborales.

El área en el que más profesionales han tenido este pensamiento es el de cuidados críticos, aunque el Consejo General de Enfermería desconoce cuál es la cifra exacta de quienes %nalmente han dado el paso en esa dirección. !demás, el 28,4 % de las encuestadas a%rma que no volvería a matricularse en esta carrera, un porcentaje que alcanza el 30 % en el caso de aquellas profesionale.

Y del 9,3 % que están en posición de acogerse a una jubilación anticipada, el 63 % mani%esta su deseo de hacerlo. En términos absolutos en torno a 15.000 enfermeras que, cumpliendo los requisitos para jubilarse antes, aunque suponga una reducción en su pensión, estarían dispuestas a realizarlo.

Esta radiografía de la profesión re$eja que la realidad es "muy cruda" y contribuye a ello la falta de reconocimiento social.

Las enfermeras han pasado del reconocimiento a un total olvido. Estamos en una situación insostenible y está provocando algo impensable por el carácter vocacional de la profesión y el abandono.

Covid y carga de trabajo De toda la enfermería, las más afectadas a nivel emocional y psicológico son las enfermeras de las unidades de críticos -donde el índice de mortalidad es más alto-, seguido de las urgencias y la atención primaria.

Cerca de la mitad de los profesionales (un 48%) ha padecido la covid-19 y, de todos ellos, un 14,5% ha estado contagiado ya dos o más veces. Su incidencia supera ampliamente a la de la población general, situada en torno a un 21%.

La atención a la covid está copando una parte importante de la actividad de la profesión en detrimento del resto de patologías y pacientes. !sí, el 79,3% a%rma que su atención sanitaria tiene que ver con pacientes covid en mayor o menor medida al cabo de cada día: un 27,1% dedica prácticamente de forma completa (la mayoría de su trabajo diario) y el 52,2% una parte de sus tareas a este tipo de enfermos, y sólo un 20,7 de los profesionales dice tener poca o ninguna relación con el coronavirus.

El VIH: una seria amenaza

El VIH sigue siendo una seria amenaza para la salud de la comunidad hispana / latina. Los latinos representan aproximadamente el 18,7% de la población de EE. UU., Pero representan aproximadamente el 29% de las personas que viven con el VIH y aproximadamente el 24% de todas las personas recién diagnosticadas con el VIH. El estigma asociado con el VIH y la homosexualidad y las realidades sociales y económicas de la vida de algunos latinos, incluida la pobreza, el miedo a la deportación y la falta de acceso a la atención médica, pueden aumentar el riesgo de contraer el VIH. El miedo a revelar información confidencial, como comportamientos de riesgo u orientación sexual, puede impedir que los latinos se hagan la prueba del VIH y busquen servicios de tratamiento y prevención. HIV continues to be a serious threat to the health of the Hispanic/Latino community. Latinos represent approximately 18.7% of the US population, but account for an estimated 29% of people living with HIV and approximately 24% of all persons newly diagnosed with HIV. The stigma associated with HIV and homosexuality and the social and economic realities of some Latino’s lives, including poverty, fear of deportation, and lack of access to health care, can increase HIV risk.

Fear of disclosing sensitive information such as risk behavior or sexual orientation may prevent Latinos from getting tested for HIV and seeking treatment and prevention

services. As a result, too many Latinos lack critical information about how to prevent infection.

HIV/AIDS is no longer a death sentence and can be treated so that you can live a long life. Individuals cannot be treated for HIV, if you don’t know you have the virus.

Ecker Center offers free HIV testing to high-risk Latino persons and offers a support group for Latino gay and bisexual men who are living with HIV. Our bilingual and bicultural staff have been offering services to the Latino population for over 20 years.

LA APNEA DEL SUEÑO PROVOCA CAMBIOS IMPORTANTES EN LA BIOQUÍMICA CEREBRAL Una investigación revela que en pacientes con el tipo más habitual de apnea del sueño se producen cambios característicos en dos neurotransmisores esenciales.

Carolina Pikacho Fronteras de la Noticia - mayoclinic.com Uno de cada 15 adultos tiene una apnea del sueño de moderada a severa, un trastorno en el que la respiración de una persona se ve frecuentemente interrumpida durante el sueño, hasta 30 veces por hora.

Las personas con apnea del sueño informan también a menudo de problemas a la hora de pensar, como una mala concentración, di#cultades con la memoria y la toma de decisiones, depresión y estrés.

En el reciente estudio, el equipo de Paul Macey, de la Universidad de California en Los Ángeles (UCLA), Estados Unidos, ha constatado que las personas con apnea del sueño muestran cambios notables en los niveles de dos neurotransmisores importantes, lo cual podría ser una razón por la que muchos tienen síntomas que les afectan durante su día a día.

Macey y sus colaboradores examinaron los niveles de esos neurotransmisores (glutamato y GABA) en una región cerebral llamada ínsula, la cual integra señales procedentes de regiones cerebrales superiores para regular las emociones, el pensamiento y funciones físicas como la presión sanguínea y la transpiración. Hallaron niveles más bajos de GABA y niveles inusualmente más altos de glutamato en las personas con apnea del sueño analizadas en el estudio.

El GABA es un mensajero químico que actúa como inhibidor en el cerebro, pudiendo así enlentecer algunos procesos mentales y mantener calmada a la gente, como un pedal de freno. El GABA afecta al estado de ánimo y ayuda a producir endor#nas.

El glutamato, en cambio, es como un acelerador; cuando sus niveles son altos, el cerebro está funcionando en un estado de tensión, y en consecuencia en algunos aspectos no lo hace de forma tan efectiva. Los niveles altos de glutamato pueden ser también tóxicos para los nervios y las neuronas.

El Gobierno, en respuesta a una querella legal contra la medida iniciada en el Tribunal Federal del Distrito de Columbia, indicó que "no anticipa cambio inminente alguno en la política del Departamento de Estado que sustancia este litigio".

Gracias a él empezó a perseguir sus sueños en la música y este siempre lo apoyó, al igual que su padre, Alejandro Fenrández. Don Vicente, quien falleció el pasado 12 de diciembre, estuvo muy enfermo los últimos meses de su vida, por lo que antes de partir, le dio unos sabios consejos a su nieto. el hijo de ‘El Potrillo’ reveló el último consejo que le dio su sabio abuelo de 81 años. En el aspecto familiar, ‘Don Chente’

le dijo:“Siempre me pidió que cuidara a la familia, que siempre estuviera pendiente de mis hijos, en general de la familia”.

En cuanto a la faceta profesional, ‘El Cahrro de Huentitán’ deseó que su nieto siguiera tan incansable como él y su padre, pero que siempre encontrara un balance para no descuidar a sus seres queridos.

“Que me enfocara en mi carrera artística; me hiciera metas, me propusiera todo, pero que no dejara que la carrera me consumiera, a grado tal, que descuidara a la familia porque al $nal de cuentas es lo que más importa y no te das cuenta de que las descuidas hasta que ya pasó muchísimo tiempo”.

Es precisamente ese equilibrio entre su carrera y su familia lo que Álex tendrá que procurar en los próximos meses, ya que

dentro de poco tiempo se convertirá en papá junto a su esposa, Alexia Hernández.

La pareja, que se casó por el civil en mayo del año pasado, recibirá en un par de meses a una bebé, a quien llamarán Mia. Además de revelar las enseñanzas que su abuelo le dejó, el cantante de 28 años compartió al programa de televisión cómo fueron los últimos días de su abuelito, quien permaneció ingresado por cuatro meses en el Hospital Country 2000 de Guadalajara, &alisco, en México. “Es difícil, pero a $nal de cuentas, piensas como estaba él, en las condiciones que estaba en el hospital y, la verdad, es que está mucho mejor a como estaba, ya ni había manera. Carlos Morales, Fronteras de la Noticia - fotogramas.es Una de las virtudes de este retorno, sin complejos, tal vez sin originalidad y sin ninguna pretensión más allá de la de (casi nada) entretener, al cine de aventuras más clásico es que no se obsesiona en ser una sucesión de guiños a los fanáticos de la serie de videojuegos de la cual toma nombre, personajes y esquema, sino que simplemente (casi nada) cuenta una de esas búsquedas del tesoro que desde Robert Louis Stevenson a Steven Spielberg han hecho soñar a generaciones. Uncharted no decepcionará tampoco a los que han pasado horas o días ante una PlayStation (y las dos escenas post créditos son para ellos en ese sentido un regalo), pero eso no es lo que los guionistas y un Ruben Fleischer cada vez más cómodo como artesano consideran su objetivo principal. Una aventura como las de antes, #lmada como las de antes pero en un mundo que ya es algo sin lugares secretos, destinos exóticos y botines de conquistadores esperando ser descubiertos. Una película de aventuras como las de antes en un cine actual que ha sacri#cado la capacidad de sorpresa por la aparatosidad de sus secuencias, ilustraciones aisladas sin ningún tipo de misterio.

Con esa evidente deuda hacia Indiana Jones (a quien se cita expresamente) o al Nicolas Cage de La búsqueda de Jon Turteltaub (otro director orgulloso de ser un artesano y no un autor) y un rechazo evidente y agradecido a las Lara Croft cinematográ#cas, Uncharted realmente es una historieta de Tintin (El secreto del Unicornio y El tesoro de Rackham el Rojo, no por casualidad en el argumento de la adaptación dirigida por… Steven Spielberg) ambientada en el siglo XXI, quizás en un oasis de inocente optimismo dentro de esta época pesimista que vivimos. Eso sí que es un tesoro.

Recuperan una gran fortuna amasada por Fernando de Magallanes hace 500 años y perdida por la Casa de Moncada. Lo que en un principio era para ambos un plan de robo, se convierte en una carrera de infarto alrededor del mundo para conseguir el botín antes de que lo haga el despiadado Santiago Moncada (Antonio Banderas), quien a#rma que él y su familia son los auténticos herederos. Esta es la primera vez que Fonsi y Turizo colaboran, aunque desde hace tiempo querían hacerlo, y ambos han participado en la composición del tema junto a Mauricio Rengifo, Andrés Torres y Keytin, según el comunicado de sus representantes.
