Argonne projects aim to help utilities, communities plan

We tend to talk about climate change as something thatishappening on aglobal scale, but projects underwayatDuPage County’s Argonne National Laboratorycan show you whatthe future climate will look likeinyour own town.

By giving you aglimpse into future conditions, from high humiditytoincreased precipitation, twoArgonne’s initiatives map out climate risks to help communities create plans thataffectthem specifically

Theprojects come as studies suggest climate changeincreasingly is viewed as alocal issue: One in three Americans reported they have been personally affected by an extreme weather event in the pasttwo years, according to Gallup’s 2022 environment poll.

Partnering with AT&T and ComEd, Argonne’s Center for Climate Resilience and Decision Science builds on climate information from the lab’s fleetofresearchers and supercomputers.

One projectinparticular allows anyone in the countrytotypeinthe home address and receive climate projections for the surrounding area.

Argonne worked with AT&T as well as the Federal EmergencyManagement Agency to createthe mapping tool, called the Climate Risk &Resilience Portal, or ClimRR. Argonne spokesperson Dave Bukey said the tool was made to provide emergencymanagers and communityleaders free access to localized data about future climate risks.

Forexample, in the area surrounding Arlington Heights where the Daily Herald is headquartered, ClimRR projects total annual precipitation will rise from ahistorical baseline of 30.50 inches to 32.93 inches by midcentury, which is the years 2045 to 2054.

This projection is based on ascenario thatemissions will peak around 2040 and then decline. But if greenhouse gases continue to rise unchecked throughout the 21st century, the tool projects amuch more severe changeto37.27 annual inches.

Argonne’s supercomputers thathelp power the portal and other climate projections are akey resource, computing 30 years of data for the future climate of four states in amatter of months.

Forcomparison, simulating justone year of future climate in the same four states would require more than 4,000 hours of computation time on astandard computer.

“Our climate science team at Argonne produces prettycutting-edgeclimate modeling, and we apply thattoinfrastructure models and other sorts of decision instances so thatacompany, stateorlocal government

anyone who has ahand in infrastructure, communities and the built environment can startproactively planning todayto be more resilient to the impacts of climate changeinthe future,”said Thomas Wall, a program lead with the center.

Just as Argonne launched the ClimRR portal in November,italso published ajoint

study with ComEd thatfocuses on how changes in northern Illinois’ climate might affectthe power grid.

Thestudy states the utility’sservice territoryalready experiences extreme weather events thatpose challenges to building, managing and operating the electrical distribution grid but those events only will

increase in frequencyand intensityover time.

“ComEd will face hotter and longer summers with more consistent and extreme high temperatures, and warmer winters. Similarly,changes in humiditywill equate to higher midcenturyheatindexes, which can have physiological effects on individuals’ capacitytocope with extreme heat, increasing the potential for public health and safety issues,”the study states. “Given thathigher temperatures also decrease the capacityoftransmission and distribution lines, planning for infrastructure and operations investments to cope with increasing demand and decreasing relative capacityis paramount.”

Altogether,Argonne’s temperature, wind and heatindexprojections underscore a need to prepare for the impacts of significantly higher temperatures on grid capacity and demand, the study reports.

“Inour industry, there’sarising awareness of the sensitivityofthe grid to climate change. That comes through disasters, and it comes through the increasing prevalence of visible effects of climate change, because it’s hereand now,” said Ryan Burg, aprincipal business analystwith ComEd.

Burg said ComEd will use the data to inform arangeofengineering decisions, particularly when it comes to equipment almostall of its equipment is subjectto thermal stresses.

Ahotter climate also will affectthe utility’severydayupkeep of its system, such as vegetation management. Sending crews to trim around power lines is an important aspectofsystem reliability, and alonger growing season means more resources needed in thatarea.

Alongside climate change, ComEd simultaneously is preparing for the effect decarbonization will have on the grid. That means as more and more people turn to electricitytopower their cars and homes, the grid will be bearing an even larger load.

Both the AT&T and ComEd initiatives are ongoing. With the ClimRR portal still in its experimental stage, researchers hope to collectfeedback and improve the tool as more communitymembers testit.

Argonne’s climatestudy with ComEd is entering Phase 2, which will expand the research scope to examine the impacts to flood risk and convection the weather phenomenon thatcauses severe storms with high winds and tornadoes.

Aprincipios de este año 2023, el gobierno del presidente Joe Biden reimpulsó la operación de la aplicación móvil que lleva por nombre ‘CBP One’, la cual permitirá a los migrantes centroamericanos, que están varados en la frontera sur del lado mexicano, programar sus citas para solicitarasilo alos Estados Unidos. Através de esta aplicación, que está disponible para los dispositivos IOS yAndroid, las personas de nacionalidad venezolana, haitiana, guatemalteca, salvadoreña y mexicana, entre otros, podrán realizar un registro previo donde informarán alas autoridades estadounidenses los motivos por los cuales quieren cruzar la frontera entre México yEstados Unidos.

La aplicación que fue creada desde el 28 de octubre de 2020 yque es reimpulsada por el gobierno estadounidense, resurge apartir de este 12 de enero luego de que el pasado 5deenero el Departamento de Seguridad de los Estados Unidos (DHS) anunció nuevas medidas para procesar alas personas que solicitan asilo en los puertos de entrada fronteriza entre EE.UU. yMéxico yque buscan estar exentos del Título 42.

Los migrantes interesados en realizar su registroen CBP One tendrán que realizar los siguientes pasos.

1. Descargar la aplicación ‘CBP One´ en su dispositivo móvil en la App Store (IOS) oGoogle Play (Android).

2. Crear un usuario ycontraseña en caso de no tenerlo.

En general, losinsectos tienen un papel crucial en los

ecosistemas naturales, pues forman parte de la biodiversidad, un concepto capital alahora de garantizar que el mundo no deje de ser tal ycomo lo conocemos. Y, por lo tanto, que también nosotros dejemos de poder seguir en él. Suena dramático, pero así son las cosas. La pérdida de biodiversidad que sobrevendría si las abejasdesaparecieran o, simplemente, se vieran minimizadas, signi caría una catástrofe ambiental. En términos de

Highlights from the Hispanic Society’s collection of decorative arts will include exceptionalearthenwarebowls from the Bell Beaker culture, c. 2400-1900 BC, Celtiberian jewelleryfrom the Palencia Hoard,c. 150-72 BC, discovered in Palencia in 1911 during the construction of arailway cutting, Hispano-Islamic silk textilesincluding the AlhambraSilk, c. 1400, whichrecalls the tile designs of the Alhambrapalace complexin Granada, as well as some of the finestexamples of lustrewarefromthe 14th -16thcenturies from Manises, Valencia.

Spainand the Hispanic World will also include treasures from the Hispanic Society’srenowned library,the mostimportant collection of Hispanic manuscripts and rare books outside of Spain. Highlightswill include abeautifullyilluminated Hebrew Bible, after 1450-97, and an exceptionally rare Black Book of Hours,c.1458, which was probably commissioned by María of Castile (1401-1458)uponthe death of her husband, Alfonso VofAragon(1396-1458).
