WHAT ABOUT STOLEN ITEMS? Tom Weisenburger said he doesn’t worry about s tolen items at Arizona Pawn because the store’s s ystem is hooked up to an online investigation system called LeadsOnline.

The item gets entered into the computer and gets put on a database and the seller needs their ID and fingerprints, he said, noting people s elling stolen items tend to go somewhere else where they don’t need to go through so many steps.

“We get very little stolen stuff,” he said.

Local Pawn Shop Gets Interesting Items

t’s been about a year since Brian Phillips said he walked into one of the pawn shops in Prescott and though he didn’t see anything quirky or unusual, he did say he noticed a difference between the items in a thrift store and what’s found in pawn shops.

Likewise, Ashlyn Tabar and Sage Plummer said the last time they went into a pawn shop was also a year ago, though they visited one near Phoenix. That shop did have some unique items for sale.

“They had a huge beanie baby collection,” she said. “A lot of antique jewelry and stuff like that.”

na have owned Arizona Pawn on Miller Valley Road in Prescott for about six years, the former said, noting he’s been in the business for around 22 years.

There are more than a few noteworthy items that come through his doors and no day is like the next, Weisenburger said.

Items he’s seen include a bionic leg that allows someone to run with a nine-foot stride, old Prescott parking meters, an original cordless iron, the change counter from the old Senator Drive In and theater chairs from the Elks Theatre.

“They refurbished and went to a new style,” he said. “These still have the names of the people who were renting them at the time on the backs of them.”

In the time before owning the store in Prescott, Weisenburger said he got one of

those eyepieces with a camera on it that goes in the wall so a person can look at the wires. This was when the technology was in its infancy and it didn’t have a digital screen like they do now, he said, stating it had a battery, a fiber-optic cable and a scope.

Weisenburger also mentioned the 1942 Rickenbacker Lap Steel guitar he had made out of Bakelite. It plays perfectly, he said, with Petrina commenting everything about the instrument is original from the strings to the slide.

Petrina said she likes the stories that will sometimes come with the pieces.

ment Director Richard Parker at the Prescott Valley Town Council meeting on Thursday, Jan. 12. Development has moved into the second unit with 132 proposed lots on 65 acres, Parker said.

“The developer has elected now to bring the plat forward,” he said. “This is two-thirds of the Granville project coming to you in the platted format.”

Granville was approved in 1999 and though there was a downturn in development during what’s come to be referred to as the Great Recession during 2007 and 2008, development is going strong right now, Parker said.

Ever since the age of 12, Jodi Rooney said she’s had a desire to potentially serve in local government in some capacity. The seed may have been planted at a young age, but it didn’t burst forth until a certain time, she said, calling now the right time.

On Thursday, Jan. 12, Rooney was appointed by the Prescott Valley Town Council to fill the seat left open by former councilmember Stephen Marshall’s resignation. Marshall resigned on Thursday, Nov. 3, citing dysfunction

within the council.

Rooney said she’s worked in government multiple years and understands there are rhythms to government and that politics is how things get done, how agreements Jodi Rooney work and how things like the budget and personnel work as well.

“Part of my gifted area is administration. I work well in this arena and certainly I don’t know everything about

▶ Four finalists from the 11 candidates who applied to fill Marshall’s seat When she moved to Prescott Valley 10 years ago for an opportunity to run the transportation planning organization in the region, Jodi Rooney said she got to know a lot of the staff in the region as well as the council members and learn about the politics and the issues facing the town.

“We have a lot of growth and my strength is transportation. As we look forward, that’s going to be something I bring to the table,” she said. “I look at the general plan … I like the strategies that we have in the general plan. That’s going to take people who work together. We have really good leadership here on the council. I would like to be a part of that as a team player.”

Out of 11 candidates presenting themselves before the Prescott Valley Town Council at the work study session on Thursday, Jan. 6, Rooney is one of four finalists to advance in the search to fill the vacant seat left open by former Councilmember Stephen Marshall’s departure.

The other finalists are Linda Cortright, Don Packard and Gary Roberts.

Marshall resigned on Nov. 3, saying he was fed up with the dysfunction of the body. The council is expected to choose his successor at this week’s meeting, scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

“It was like every Thursday, I dreaded coming to this place because I was never listened to,” Marshall said. “I was always pushed off because I was the younger guy.”

Marshall was often a lone voice of dissent on the council.

The council is looking for somebody who is cooperative but also understanding of how the town operates and the council works, said Councilmember Marty Grossman following the meeting.

“You can’t bring your own prejudices to the job. You have to be able to see things from both sides and make the decision as to what’s best for the town,” Gross-

HISTORY

O

verlooking what is now Prescott Valley, Glassford Hill has witnessed many changes since being formed by volcanic activity many centuries ago. At one time, mammoths roamed the valley floor. There is ample archaeological evidence to indicate that early man moved into the area nearly 3,000 years ago. Native Americans settled villages around the year 1400 and left behind spear points and other artifacts to mark their presence.

Though Spanish explorers passed through the vicinity in the late 16th century, it was not until the 1864 discovery of gold in the nearby Bradshaw Mountains that Prescott Valley began to really attract attention from the outside world.

The U.S. Army established Fort Whipple in nearby Prescott and the U.S. Cavalry used Glassford Hill as a heliograph site for signal mirrors to communicate with other army units in a war

against the Apaches. This was probably the most activity Prescott Valley saw until the early 1900s, when the Fain family homesteaded the area.

Cattle then shared the range with antelope for decades … but a new town was on the way. In 1966, Prescott Valley was founded.

By the early 1970s, the population in the area, sometimes called Lonesome Valley, had grown to 600 people. Prescott Valley was incorporated in 1978 with a population of 1,520. Today, Prescott Valley is one of the fastest-growing non-metropolitan towns in America. We now have more than 45,000 residents and we continue to grow, but we are still proud to offer a friendly, small-town atmosphere that makes us one of the nation’s most desirable communities in which to live and work.

LOCATION & Transportation

L

ocated in Yavapai County, Prescott Valley lies between the cities of Flagstaff and Phoenix. Residents find traveling around town, as well as the entire state of Arizona, to be convenient and easily accessible. U.S. Highway 89 and State Highways 69 and 89A serve the town.

Within close proximity to Interstates 17 and 40, it is no wonder that a day’s drive can take you to Tucson, Las Vegas and even Los Angeles.

hoenix may be the official state capital, but when it comes to recreation, leisure-time activities and good old-fashioned fun, Prescott Valley is the real capital of Arizona.

On the outskirts of town are the towering pines of Prescott National Forest, where there are thousands of acres available for hiking, biking, backpacking, fishing and camping. Lynx Lake, Goldwater Lake and Watson Lake are just a few miles up the road, as are the rugged Mingus Mountains with their spectacular vistas.

The Town of Prescott Valley offers a variety of recreational facilities.

Prescott Valley’s inventory of open space and recreation opportunities range from highly developed, active recreation sites to passive open space. The town features over 269 acres of developed parklands, 171 acres of open space, 27 park sites, an outdoor public swimming pool, 31 multi-purpose athletic fields, miles of award-winning trails, two amphitheaters and two community/activity centers.

Mountain Valley Park, located at 8600 E. Nace Ln., is the town’s current regional park. rescott Valley is rich in a variety of cultural activities for all ages. The beautifully landscaped grounds at the Prescott Valley Civic Center create the setting for the “Art at the Center” collection and many community and town events. Also located on the Civic Center grounds is the Prescott Valley Military Monument. This monument, along with its Walk of Honor, stands out to honor all who have served, serve and will serve in our armed forces.

Fain Park is home to a historical mining display, as well as ancient Native American ruins. In the contemporary town center, Harkins Theater, a 14-screen cineplex, anchors an entertainment district, which includes restaurants, shops, a family fun center and a miniature golf course.

The Prescott Valley Event Center is home to the Northern Arizona Suns professional basketball team; the developmental league team for the Phoenix Suns, other hockey events, numerous concerts, family shows and community events.

Fifteen years ago, with assistance from the Prescott Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Prescott Valley Art Guild was established. Art and culture are embraced and encouraged through this organization, which actively promotes imagination and creativity from the community.

Acclaimed artists and teachers teach workshops and classes through the Guild. Youth Arts month, along with Family Arts Day, is celebrated in March. Local artists have opportunity to display their work at the Prescott Valley Public Library through the Town’s Public Art Display program, and as part of the annual Mountain Artist’s Guild Quad City Studio Art Tour, of which the Prescott Valley Civic Center is a studio location.

Now in its 47th year, the Prescott Center for the Arts (PCA) has been the biggest contributor to the community’s cultural and artistic needs.

They vigorously provide entertainment, education and participation for

The numerous concerts, art exhibits and scholarship competitions supported and offered by the PCA over the years have proved the organization’s dedication to its craft.

ny way you study it, Prescott Valley is a community that believes in education.

Students of all ages and interests have opportunities to learn and improve themselves through a combination of public schools, charter schools and private schools, all complimented by several colleges and universities.

Our public school system is outstanding, with five elementary schools, two middle schools and a state-of-the-art high school, which prides itself on its student achievement, athletic programs and faculty. Local public schools are part of the Humboldt Unified School District, which has been recognized statewide for its progressive administrative leadership.

Prescott Valley’s charter and private schools also serve the community well. Their record of student achievement is definitely worthy of praise.

On standardized tests, Prescott Valley students exceed state averages and compare favorably with national averages for ACT and SAT scores. For students looking for courses in technical education, Mountain Institute JTED offers many classes both on campus and in partnership with businesses.

As for higher education, the area’s colleges and universities offer a wide range of learning experiences, from vocational training to advanced degrees in aerospace engineering.

Yavapai College, which offers associate degrees and programs in more than 75 areas of study, maintains an education center in Prescott Valley.

Students can also pursue bachelor’s and master’s degrees locally in partnership with Northern Arizona University and Old Dominion Univer-

sity. NAU-Yavapai, with a campus in Prescott Valley, offers four baccalaureate courses of study, which can be completed in three years.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, with residential campuses in Prescott and Florida, is a world leader in aviation and aerospace education.

A

mayor, six council members and a town manager govern the Town of Prescott Valley, actively promoting and preparing for our city’s future. With those sentiments in mind, the council has played a major role in the city’s sustained growth.

Under the direction of this mayor and council, the town created the popular and successful Citizen’s Academy. This 10-week course educates community members about the various departments within the town government and their functions.

The Prescott Valley Police Department is currently staffed with 76 sworn personnel and 22 civilian positions divided into two main divisions. The Field Services Division consists of patrol, traffic, K9, animal control and a special response team. The Support Services Division consists of criminal investigations, school resource and records. In addition, the chief ’s Administrative Section consists of administrative support, training/background coordination and volunteers. The police department also belongs to a regionalized dispatch center housed in Prescott.

The department practices community-oriented policing and participates in such programs as Neighborhood Block Watch, Business Watch, National Night Out, “Every 15 Minutes,” First Responder Smart Card, Watch Your Car, Police Explorers and Volunteers in Policing.

The internationally-accredited Central Arizona Fire and Medical Authority serves the town of Prescott Valley. The fire district is staffed by career professionals providing the following main services: modern fire suppression techniques, advanced life support, hazardous materials, public education and fire safety inspections.
