WELCOME Since the mid-1980s, Pittsburgh has been recognized nationally as a leader among American cities in stability, livability, affordability, versatility and change. Once driven by its prowess in the steel industry, there were more corporate headquarters located within its boundaries than all but two other U.S. cities. When the steel business left in the 1970s, however, it took with it that distinction and a lot of jobs, people and prosperity. Pittsburgh was at a crossroads. It could bemoan its fate and fade into obscurity or reinvent itself. It chose to reinvent itself.

Building Up the Next Generation Facilitating Success From the Classroom to the Boardroom

T

here are many advantages to joining a Chamber of Commerce.

Due to such perks, the Pittsburgh North Regional Chamber has taken membership to a whole new level. The Chamber is now offering student memberships, so that up-and-coming professionals can begin investing in their community and making contacts that will impact their careers for years to come.

“Student memberships are offered to any student that attends local institutions of higher learning. For students who attend a university or college that is an Educational Stakeholder Partner, membership is free. Students who do not attend one of these seven partner schools will pay $25/year for a student membership,” says Jim Boltz, president of the Chamber. “It allows students to jump-start their career while still in college.”

The benefits for students include but are not limited to meeting professional members, making business-to-business connections and building relationships, learning about community initiatives, building resumes through committee involvement, gaining personal visibility from presentation opportunities and volunteer efforts, developing personal, professional and leadership skills through educational opportunities; and so much more.

Lastly, the Chamber’s young professionals group, HYPE, Helping Young Professionals Excel, opens endless possibilities to up-and-coming community leaders. HYPE connects the region’s young professionals in social settings to help build relationships and network outside of their companies, while also providing them with volunteer and community engagement opportunities.

Self-Driving Cars Navigate Metro Roads

n Pittsburgh, a city known for industry and the pride of championships, work on a pioneering project is making headlines and taking the wheel.

Self-driving cars, also known as autonomous vehicles, are designed to take riders from point A to point B without the presence of a “human” driver. Ridesharing and transportation company, Uber, opened its Advanced Technology Center in February 2015 dedicated to the creation of selfdriving cars.

It’s not unusual for drivers to see one of Uber’s self-driving cars on the hills and turns of Pittsburgh’s roads. Currently, these vehicles have two Uber employees riding in the front seat. One is in the driver’s seat, ready to grab the wheel or hit the brake if needed while the other is in the passenger seat, testing the laser monitoring systems that keep the vehicle moving.

“Our team is heads-down on developing the safest self-driving technology for riders on the Uber network,” says Noah Zych, head of system safety at Uber Advanced Technologies Group. “We believe the pace at which we are moving towards a fully autonomous system, in a limited geographic domain, is comparable to the industry, and we look forward to sharing this with our riders in the future.”

Through the creation of self-driving cars, Uber and other companies developing this technology hope to enhance safety. Self-driving cars follow the speed limit, make complete stops at signs and follow other traffic safety rules that can otherwise result in accidents. For Uber, self-driving cars could mean more profits by paying fewer drivers and the advent of people no longer buying a car to have at home, much like cell phones have largely replaced “home” phones.

In addition to Uber’s investment in the engineering and technology efforts toward autonomous vehicles, Ford Motor Co. is investing nearly $1 billion over the course of five years in developing autonomous vehicles. Ford will engineer and monitor its self-driving cars in Pittsburgh with the goal of developing an autonomous vehicle by the year 2021.

Preparing for the Future Schools Provide Basis for Success

T

he Pittsburgh North region has proven to be one of innovation and reinventing itself. In order to stay on task, the region will need a capable workforce to fill jobs that are coming available, especially in the emerging technology sector.

North Allegheny School District equips students to excel in careers driven by technology through the Focus 2020 initiative. As part of the third year of the program, iPads were distributed to fourth- and fifthgrade students.

Districts often measure success in test scores, graduation rates, rankings and awards. While exceeding expectations in these areas, North Allegheny School District also places emphasis on student engagement, career and college readiness, digital citizenship, as well as student and staff wellness.

The Seneca Valley, Mars, South Butler and Butler Area school districts offer high school students the opportunity to take career courses at the Butler County Area Vocational-Technical School.

Beginning in 10th grade, students are able to earn college credit and jump-start their careers at the Butler County Area Vocational-Technical School.

The courses prepare students for high priority occupations, such as machine technology, welding, automotive technology, health occupations and computer networking.

Pine-Richland School District helps students prepare for the future by helping them obtain the skills needed for 21st century jobs and higher education opportunities.

At the high school level, students work through the guidance office to explore post-secondary opportunities through meetings with colleges, career and technical institutions and meetings with career counselors.

“Successful career planning involves incorporating each student’s unique qualities, abilities and goals,” says Jean Whalen, director of college and career counseling.

“A college or career ‘fit’ is one that embraces all aspects of an individual’s educational strengths and personality.

The most important advice is to encourage students to find what is best for them.”

The school district provides every middle and high

school student access to Naviance, a college and career software program. The district also provides other opportunities through clubs and activities.

Students also have options through the Allegheny Intermediate Unit Apprenticeship Program to participate in a half-day or daylong learning experience during the school year. Students get to meet and work with professionals who share their expertise in a host of careers from engineering to performing arts. Students K-8 are also exposed to career exploration as well through Career Day and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Mathematics) Day, in which experts from various companies and fields provide their knowledge of careers.

A.W. Beattie Career Center also offers students in the Pittsburgh North region an opportunity to explore a vocational or technical education program and advanced career preparation. Offerings include everything from advanced computer programming to culinary arts and dental careers.

At Beaver Area School District, students are immersed with cutting-edge concepts and an innovative way of thinking. Through STAP (Student Technology Assistance Program), which starts in middle school, students begin to learn about software, operating systems, apps and more.

This gives pupils the computer literacy needed for the 21st century workplace. Taking it a step further, students can become certified in Apple IOS and Cisco.

Situated in the heart of Cranberry Township, Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic (CWNC) High School is preparing the next wave of servant leaders and redefining what career development at the high school level means in the Pittsburgh North region.

CWNC students begin with a Career Action Plan (CAP) during their freshmen year. This is part of an e-portfolio in which they self-report their career interests and research work environments and salaries.

They build on their CAP every year and conduct additional research and activities, such as conducting interviews with people in their chosen career fields, researching majors, degrees, certifications and potential pghnorthchamber.com • 21

“This is what it is all about! Helping students explore careers and giving them exposure to a variety of possibilities, so that when it comes times to making decisions, such as choosing a major, potential career or school, they can make the decision with confidence,” says Jen Parsons, career development program manager. “Sometimes it is about helping a student narrow their focus or even crossing a career off their list and that is okay too.”

Virtuous team building, rigorous academics and career exploration opportunities coupled with a Catholic worldview are just a few parts of what it means to be a Trojan or a Trojanette in 2018.

Another important resource for students is the supplemental educational and career opportunities provided by Junior Achievement (JA).

JA uses turn-key, standards-aligned curriculum to provide students with a solid foundation in money management, careers and business ownership. With corporate and community volunteers, JA programs help students make the connection between classroom theory and real world application. JA has the means, methodology, pedigree and scientifically proven approach to reset the trajectory of the next generation of workers.

All of JA’s programs introduce soft skills that students will need in their future careers. JA Career Success equips students with the knowledge required to get and keep a job in high-growth industries. Students learn the crucial workplace skills employers seek, as well as valuable tools to find jobs.

JA Company Program unlocks the innate ability in high school students to fill a need or solve a problem in their community by launching a business venture.

JA It’s My Future provides practical information about preparing for the working world. Students learn about career clusters, high-growth jobs, career planning and creating a personal brand. Partnering Together Giving Rewarding Careers a Head Start For students who choose to attend college after high school or for those changing careers, there are numerous options throughout the Pittsburgh North region. These colleges and universities are major

economic players in the region and directly impact the local workforce by making the area attractive to employers looking for a talented workforce.

Butler County Community College Butler County Community College (BC3) collaborates with local businesses and regional workforce agencies to identify industry needs and develop noncredit and credit programs to fit those needs.

BC3 offers 36 two-year career programs that range from associate degrees in computer information systems to emergency services to technical trades. Also available are 21 certificate and workplace certificate programs in fields such as accounting skills, homeland security and health care.

At the request of Oberg Industries, the college offers on-site instruction for its employees to pursue BC3’s 26-credit apprenticeship technology workplace certificate. The college also partners with Gatan, a manufacturer with a site in Warrendale, to offer BC3’s 64-credit associate of applied science degree in its manufacturing with advanced technology program.

Most BC3 business programs require a semesterlong practicum, or internship, of no fewer than 160 hours. Many BC3 students serve with institutions such as the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, PNC Financial Services, NexTier Bank and many more.

BC3’s noncredit Workforce Development division also offers certificate programs tailored to prepare students as welders, auto technicians, manufacturing pre-apprentices and certified personal trainers.

Participants in BC3’s manufacturing pre-apprenticeship certificate program, held in concert with Penn United Technologies Inc., Cabot, develop entry-level skills that enable graduates to start a career in manufacturing.

California University of Pennsylvania With a slew of academics offered in state-of-the-art facilities, students enrolled at California University of Pennsylvania enjoy a one-of-a-kind college experience.

The university boasts undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees, as well as certifications, certificates and special programs.

On top of that, programs are career focused, helping students obtain their workforce goals. In fact, graduates continually find work with some of the Pittsburgh North region’s top employers.

On an annual basis, more than 2,300 students participate in internships or other hands-on learning opportunities where they gain unmatched experience.

Cal U’s Career and Professional Development Center helps students gain knowledge, experience and skills for entering the 21st century job market.

Chatham University Chatham University works to prepare students for the workforce from year one, day one.

With programs and initiatives such as Chatham Career Launch, Welcome Aboard mentorship program, and the MyChatham plan, students get a head start on planning a successful career.

First year students take part in a career-focused seminar where they complete a career plan, start a college resume and set goals for the future. Sophomore students have the opportunity to shadow alumni at work to give more clarity to their career choices. Career Week and Internship Week help students build their jobseeking skills.

Most importantly, every undergraduate student at Chatham is required to complete an internship before graduation.

Although Chatham partners with employers throughout the region, the biggest partnership is with alumni that give back to students through workshops, mentorships and programming.

Community College of Allegheny County From groundbreaking student success initiatives to top-ranked academic programs to serving a student population that surpasses 55,000 per year, the

Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) is the college of choice for nearly one out of three adults in the greater Pittsburgh region.

CCAC’s Workforce Development Division offers the types of programs employers and workers need for success in the modern workplace—one reliant on creativity, complex problem-solving, advanced technological know-how and a solid understanding of sound business practices.

Partnerships with business and industry and the region’s labor unions enable the division to offer a wealth of programs to meet the needs of employers and their workers, such as CCAC’s Mechatronics program, which was proclaimed a model for the nation by President Barack Obama during a visit to CCAC in 2014.

As a partner of the statewide workforce training program WEDnetPA, CCAC also offers employers basic skills training in business, manufacturing, workplace health and safety, information technology and advanced technology. In addition, CCAC offers nearly 30 programs in the skilled trades and energy technologies, the majority of these as apprenticeship programs. Through long-standing partnerships with six Pittsburgh area construction unions, CCAC currently enrolls about 1,850 apprentices—all of whom are guaranteed employment upon completion. pghnorthchamber.com • 23

Community College of Beaver County Known as the “partnership college,” Community College of Beaver County (CCBC) has cultivated a strong 51-year history of contributions to the vitality of Beaver County and all of Southwestern Pennsylvania through innovative teaching, workforce development leadership, and community engagement, becoming the highperforming, high-achieving college it is today.

CCBC’s process technology program, new apprenticeship readiness program, nationally distinctive dual enrollment high school academies and continued full-scale engagement with Shell Chemicals and the regional petrochemicals industry are positioning CCBC to be a tri-state leader in a rapidly developing economic and industrial transformation.

The college develops its process technology curriculum with input from nearly 40 organizations interested in supporting the development of an advanced manufacturing workforce for the region.

These partners also recruit and mentor students and developed pathways to career placement and professional development.

The consortium builds on the success of the ShaleNET initiative to address workforce preparation and employment through a four-part strategy.

La Roche College La Roche College in the North Hills of Pittsburgh offers a signature, skills-based education to prepare students

for today’s competitive workforce. With a legacy of social justice and a commitment to international exchange, La Roche educates students to be lifelong learners and achievers in an increasingly diverse and global society.

La Roche offers more than 50 undergraduate majors, six graduate degree programs and one doctoral program, with particular strengths in education, business, criminal justice, psychology, and health and medical sciences as well as interior design and graphic design.

The college’s unique Study Abroad+Study USA program offers travel opportunities included in the cost of tuition. As a result, students have the opportunity to study abroad or domestically as part of their education.

Slippery Rock University Founded in 1889, Slippery Rock University (SRU) has a strong reputation for preparing the next generation for cutting-edge jobs.

As a four-year university, students have access to a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate programs.

While Slippery Rock University helps prepare students for the workforce in the classroom, it also knows the importance of real-world experience. Westminster College The Westminster College Career Center is an integral part of the career development process for students.

Beginning in every first year student’s Westminster 101 class, students receive an individual assessment and tailored career profiling. The career center offers students various programming on resume writing, e-portfolio development, usage of LinkedIn and other networking tools, as well as mock interviews and graduate program assistance.

The career center office partners with the different schools on campus to provide academic-specific engagement through the areas of focused workshops and webinars. The career center is also very active with regional consortiums, such as WestPACS and PERC, which opens opportunities for networking and employment within the region and nationally.

Generating Growth Investment Fuels Economy

G

enerating thousands of jobs and giving a mega-boost to the Pittsburgh economy, petro global-powerhouse Shell Chemical is building a new ethane cracker plant in Beaver County valued at $6 billion.

“The plant is under construction and we’re employing about 1,000 workers, but ramping up to 6,000 over the course of the next few years at the peak of construction,” says Michael Marr, business integration lead at Shell. “We plan to hire locally as much as possible, it’s good for the economy, and it’s good for the company. And there will be some who are experienced at managing these kinds of plants who are relocating to Pittsburgh, mostly from the Gulf Coast.”

The plant will include four processing units—an ethane cracker and three polyethylene units. Ethane will be drawn from the ground and processed in the final stages to produce polyethylene, one of the world’s most versatile synthetic resins.

“The cracking unit converts the ethane into ethylene, and from there, we convert it to polyethylene pellets that we sell to manufacturers, who through their own processes, convert it into other products,” says Marr. “The pellets are used to make a huge range of goods and products, from plastic containers and

food packaging, to kayaks and outdoor furniture.”

Boosting the economy with the impact of prolonged construction, the plant will be operational in the early 2020s. Improving the region even more, Shell will be generating and supplying electricity.

“The ethane plant will have its own 250-megawatt natural gas-fired power plant, which will produce electricity and steam for the facility,” says Marr. “About one-third of that capacity will be exported to the regional grid. It’s good business, with environmental benefits, and potentially displaces other sources of less environmentally friendly means of producing electricity.”

For a host of reasons, many businesses are choosing the Pittsburgh North region for their corporate homes or expansion.

“Pittsburgh has a lot going for it,” says Marr. “For the employees of Shell and their families, the cost of living is very affordable, and there are top-notch medical facilities and doctors, not to mention a host of cultural resources and institutions thanks to great philanthropists like Andrew Carnegie and others. It offers everything you’d find in a big city, but with a pace that’s a lot less hectic. hen it comes to being sick, patients always want to feel better as soon as possible. Luckily in the Pittsburgh North region, there are health care providers ready to help. In fact, even more services are coming as providers continue to grow.

Caregivers at Allegheny Health Network (AHN) have a long history of providing the people and communities of the greater western Pennsylvania region with exceptional health care services. A Highmark Health company, AHN is composed of more than 2,800 employed or affiliated physicians, 19,000 employees, eight hospitals, four Health + Wellness Pavilions and hundreds of other care sites.

The network offers highly advanced, comprehensive care in every medical discipline through its institutes of excellence in cancer, orthopedics, neurosciences, cardiovascular medicine, women’s health, transplantation, emergency medicine, trauma care and diabetes, among others.

Last fall, AHN and Highmark Health announced a comprehensive strategy aimed at ensuring exceptional care is readily available to patients in settings close to where they live and work. AHN’s Wexford Health + Wellness Pavilion offers a range of primary and outpatient specialty care in a holistic model that combines comprehensive clinical and retail health services. The planned hospital in Pine Township will complement those services at the Pavilion, as well as the network’s other area facilities and physician practices, including its Pediatric

Orthopedic Institute.

AHN has also introduced several new programs and services that enhance access to its physicians and programs. Last year, the network became the first health care provider in the region, and among the first nationally, to significantly improve the timeliness of health care delivery by offering same-day appointments (412-DOCTORS) for both primary and specialty care. In 2017, more than 150,000 same-day appointments were scheduled.

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) provides the Pittsburgh North region’s residents with the Lemieux Sports Complex, an elite, first-of-its-kind facility with 185,000 square feet of space dedicated to treating and training all sorts of athletes.

Ready to Ride Pedal Throughout Pittsburgh

ooking to explore the Pittsburgh North region in a whole new way? Forget the car or bus.

Opt for a bike instead.

Pittsburgh Bike Share (PBS) operates the Healthy Ride bike-sharing program, and it’s the only ticket needed to discover the region and take in the scenery.

“We have 500 bicycles and 50 different stations, where customers can rent a bike and return it at any location,” says David White, PBS executive director.”

Encouraging healthy habits, the program seeks a shift in transportation culture. Riders who purchase public transportation ConnectCards can use the bikes free of charge for up to 15 minutes. The program offers pay-as-you-go options and various annual memberships to fit the needs of all users.

“Pittsburgh is the first city in the nation to set up

this kind of partnership, offering unlimited, 15-minute rides daily,” says White. “Since the program was launched in 2015, more than 60,000 have registered for Healthy Ride.”

The program is growing ever popular, even offering custom Lunch Loop rides.

“Lunch Loop is a great way to get out of the office, with a no sweat, no stress 25 to 30 minute bike ride,” says White. “We’ll provide the guide; all you have to do is pedal and enjoy the view. A group can meet us at a bike station, or we’ll bring the bikes to their office.”

PBS also hosts a growing number of special events like Bike to Work Day. The program continues to grow, with a greater reach to new neighborhoods and more stations planned for a total of 175 stations by the end of 2018. n By Cathy Cuthbertson

Raccoon Creek State Park Enjoy Raccoon Creek State Park and it’s more than 7,500 acres, which include 42 miles of trails, Raccoon Lake, a wildflower reserve and Frankfort Mineral Springs, as well as camping sites and cabins for staying overnight.

Alameda Park Alameda Park offers visitors a waterpark, a mountain bike trail, picnic areas and playgrounds.

Maridon Museum Butler’s Maridon Museum is the only museum in the Western Pennsylvania region to focus specifically on Chinese and Japanese art and culture. Containing over 800 objects, the museum holds jade and ivory sculptures, landscape paintings and artifacts from Neolithic to 20th century. The porcelain collection features Meissen (German pottery) pieces from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Moraine State Park Moraine State Park is the county’s biggest attraction and sees over 2 million visitors a year.
