named Merricks. It was later changed to Woodshop, which was its name when the town received its post office. The first appearance of the name Ozark was in 1855, when the citizens requested a name change.

The county seat was moved from Newton to Ozark in 1870.

My wish is that those of you who are reading this for the first time, natives as well as newcomers, will learn more about our great city. In fact, I invite you to visit me at city hall. Together we will learn more about Ozark and you will soon discover why Ozark is the place to live while at Fort Rucker.

After a tour, you will see all that this beautiful city has to offer. You will then be ready to choose Ozark as your new home.

As a military retiree, I can vouch that you will love Ozark. Linda and I had the opportunity to live all over the country and could have selected many places to settle, but we found no other as great as our small city. Our award-winning schools offer most everything a parent would want for their child. We are a small 5A system offering many programs available at 6A and 7A schools. We have plenty of available and reasonably priced homes priced 20 percent less than any of the surrounding cities in the

Wiregrass. The weather is phenomenal – a long spring, summer and fall, and a short winter.

When you pack up and move here, leave your snow shovel with your neighbor. If you are military, you will soon find that we are a community that welcomes our military men and women with open arms. HISTORY Before Indian removal, the area that now includes Ozark was part of the Creek Nation.

The first documented white settler was John Merrick Sr., a Revolutionary War veteran, who built a cabin in 1822 on land that is now downtown Ozark. The settlement thus came to be known initially as Merricks.

In 1826, Rev. Dempsey Dowling moved to the area, and his family established the Claybank Church in 1829-30. The current structure, the second on the site, was built in 1856 and is among the oldest log structures in the region.

The first municipal water plant opened in 1840 and the first school was established in 1841.

Two years later, the town’s name was changed to Woodshop in honor of an important local woodworking business. The town’s name was changed to Ozark in 1855. Stories indicate that Ozark received its final name from a traveler who saw a resemblance to the hilly area of the Foothill Mountains of Arkansas.

When Dale County was established in 1824, the town of Daleville was named as county seat.

The county seat was moved to Newton in 1843, but when the courthouse burned down in 1869, county officials held an election to choose a new site for the county seat. Ozark won and was incorporated as a town on Oct. 27, 1870.

That same year, Ozark’s weekly newspaper, The Southern Star, began publication and continues to the present. In 1888 the Central of Georgia Railroad completed a line connecting Eufaula, a

center of shipping, to Ozark, and the Alabama Midland Railroad completed a connector line to Troy the following year. In 1914, the Mutual Cotton Oil Company, originally called the Ozark Oil Mill, began processing cotton-seed oil for commercial use. By this time, however, the boll weevil had begun to devastate cotton crops in the area, and Ozark’s agricultural output began to diversify to include livestock, peanuts and other commodities.

Agriculture remained the most important segment of Ozark’s economy until the outbreak of World War I and the establishment of Camp Rucker. Now called Fort Rucker, the installation is the home of Army Aviation and the U.S. Army Warrant Officer Career Center. The fort remains a primary driver of Ozark’s economy.

During the 1990s, Ozark opened the Dale County Agricultural Complex and the Ozark Technology Center to broaden its economy.

Today, Ozark has diversified its economy with a wide range to agricultural commodities, industries, retail, services and the military.

Ozark is part of the “Wiregrass Region” so named for a grass “Aristda Stricta,” which is

known for its wire-like stem and texture. The Wiregrass Region consists of southeast Alabama, western Florida and southwest Georgia.

Ozark and Dale County’s cherished heritage is kept alive through historical sites located in Ozark and throughout the county. A few of the historic sites not to miss include Claybank Church and Cemetery; Holman House; Eagle Stadium; and Dowling Museum/Ann Rudd Art Center. THE SOUTHERN STAR The Southern Star, now in its 150th year of publication, is the oldest family-owned newspaper in Alabama, the oldest business in Dale County and one of the oldest in southeast Alabama. Joe H. Adams, now in his 60th year as editor, is Alabama’s longest-serving editor with the same newspaper.

Kidzone Pavilion and Splash Pad at Steagall Park Located on the north side of Peacock Parkway, Steagall Park has picnic pavilions; a playground and Splash Pad, four lighted athletic fields used

for baseball, softball and special events; eight lighted tennis courts and one lighted basketball court. Kidzone, a lighted state-of-the-art community built playground is located on the Faust Avenue side of Steagall Park. The large wooden pavilion is available for birthday parties, family reunions or special events. The pavilion is rented in three hour blocks, and all reservations must be made at Perry Recreation Center.

Eagle Stadium and Buddy Williams Field Built in 1946, this regulation-sized baseball stadium with covered grandstand has been home to professional, recreation and high school baseball. It is located on the corner of Martin Street and Carroll Avenue.

Oben Everett Park The park features two lighted basketball courts, a playground and a covered pavilion with picnic area. Everett Park is located on the corner of Andrews Avenue and College Street. The park is open to the public from sunrise to sunset.

Fuqua Park Located on Faust Avenue., Fuqua Park is home to the city’s football field and Lisenby Field, a lighted Dixie Youth baseball field.

Police Memorial Park The park features four baseball/softball fields, a lighted basketball court, two lighted tennis courts, an athletic field, picnic areas, playgrounds and a covered pavilion. It is located behind East Gate School, off Andrews Avenue, and is the home of the Soccer Complex. The park is open to the public until 10 p.m.

Ed Lisenby Lake Ed Lisenby Lake is a 92-acre, award-winning state fishing lake located in a beautiful 390-acre park. The lake also has a fully stocked bait shop offering boat rentals, fishing permits, fishing and hunting licenses, snacks, drinks, a large assortment of lures and other fishing supplies and live bait.

Pedestrian and birding trail There is a 3.1-mile walking trail at Ed Lisenby Lake. One mile of the trail is primitive, while the remaining 2.1 miles are paved. Approximate walking time is one hour. The trail is available year-round for walking and jogging. Pets are welcome to walk the trail with you, but they must be on a leash.

Sam Dale Park Sam Dale Park, part of the lake complex, has a pavilion, picnic areas and a memorial to pioneer Sam Dale.

Its mission is to provide support and assist individuals with developmental disabilities to develop and to select and or maintain natural supports and to assist these persons in becoming as successful and independent as possible.

Adams School offers early intervention and case management services for children birth to age 3 diagnosed with developmental disabilities.

Individuals ages 3 to 21 are provided educational services contracted by local school systems. These programs are provided year-round. Four abilitybased programs are available to adults over age 21 with developmental disabilities. The adult programs comprise 75 percent of the Adams School population and focus on personal care, independent living skills and work preparation training. Individuals also receive speech, occupational, and physical therapies.

GOVERNMENT The City of Ozark is governed by a mayor and five city council members. Dale County is governed by a Commission Chairman and four commission members. Ozark is the county seat with the courthouse located in our historic downtown area. City and county leaders and our citizens share a great sense of community spirit and civic responsibility that make the area a great place to live a safe, enjoyable and comfortable life.

OZARK POLICE DEPARTMENT The Ozark Police Department is staffed with a total of 60 men and women who dedicate themselves to the citizens of Ozark. The staff includes 36 sworn law enforcement officers, 12 reserve officers and 11 civilians.

The Ozark Police Department recently purchased a new records management system that assists law enforcement in such areas as crime reporting, case management, criminal and civil papers, sex offender registration, arrest reports, incident/offense reports, evidence tracking and data sharing.

The City of Ozark and the Ozark Police Department recently purchased more than 14 new police vehicles to replace a high mileage fleet of police vehicles. They have also enhanced the Community Police Program by including the following initiatives: women’s safety tips, positive ticket initiative, home safety for seniors and Ozark Youth Academy.

The Ozark Police Department is led by Chief Marlos Walker. Since becoming police chief, he has seen a reduction in violent crimes throughout the city. Chief Walker believes citizens and law enforcement must work together in order to have a safer community.

OZARK FIRE DEPARTMENT The Ozark Fire Department responds to an average of 1,800 calls per year, ranging from the smell of smoke to fully involved structure fires, medical and motor vehicle collisions.

The department delivers fire prevention, life safety, fire suppression and rescue services to residents and the community with an emphasis on response, training and education. Fire department services also include vehicle extrication, hazardous materials mitigation, confined space rescue,

advanced life support emergency medical services, disaster response and fire life safety code enforcement.

Ozark currently staffs 49 professional firefighters and paramedics at four companies and three stations located throughout the city 24 hours a day, seven days a week to provide constant services to residents, businesses and visitors. Three of these four companies are paramedic engine companies and provide a rapid response for both fire and medical calls throughout the city.

The fourth company is a ladder company strategically located to provide rapid response to fire calls and motor vehicle collisions.

ISO is the criteria for evaluating the fire prevention and fire suppression capabilities for the individual communities. The City of Ozark is currently a rating of 3, allowing a lower insurance rating for our citizens.

The fire department is an extension of the Alabama Fire College and trains many outside departments, including DOD and technical rescue for all state fire departments.

The fire department also offers education for residents such as CPR classes, fire prevention tips, station tours and safety inspections.

In addition, the fire department is active in the community by providing medical support for special events and sporting events, and by participating in Relay for Life and Operation Santa Claus. The department also supports the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the Salvation Army and the United Way.

Residents of Ozark see each incoming military family as an exciting opportunity to meet new people, show off the area’s famous southern hospitality, learn about new friends and hear stories about their families and travels. Many times we are blessed with the return of these families to our community when they are ready to put down roots, allowing us to reconnect with old friends.

Fort Rucker is the primary flight training base for U.S. Army Aviation and is home to the United States Army Aviation Center of Excellence and the United States Army Aviation Museum.

Officially opened on May 1, 1942, as Camp Rucker, it served as a training base for thousands of officers and enlisted personnel during World War II. Shortly after opening, the base was expanded to include an airfield that was designated Ozark Army Airfield. Troops trained at Camp Rucker fought in both the European and Pacific theaters during World War II. Camp Rucker was inactive from March 1946 until August 1950, but was reopened during the Korean War. After another short deactivation, it was again reopened and expanded as a helicopter training base. The name was officially changed to Fort Rucker in October 1955.

Four years later, Ozark Army Airfield was renamed Cairns Army Airfield.

Today, the U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence is the predominant military facility at Fort Rucker, training and educating over 23,000 Army Aviation soldiers and leaders annually. Fort Rucker’s infrastructure includes four air bases, 14 staging fields and 72 remote training sites covering over 29,000 square miles in southern Alabama and northern Florida.

Fort Rucker covers about 64,500 acres of countryside in an area known as the “Wiregrass.”

Fort Rucker MRW provides many recreational activities and services that are available to surrounding communities. Participating in and enjoying these amenities are a great way to meet and get to know our military neighbors.
