I ’m a lucky girl! I grew up in Oelwein. Why would I leave?

Everything I need is right here. We have an outstanding educational system with forward-thinking administrators and school board. You can even graduate from high school with an AA degree because students may attend the Regional Academy for Math and Science and take college courses for free while still in high school. We have a state-of-the-art public library that is always featuring new programs and events to attend.

Speaking of attending, our William Center for the Arts seats 800 people and has entertainment from around the world perform.

There is a fitness center that is attached to the Williams Center and is open 24/7.

Oelwein is proud of our 12 parks with their beauty and recreational opportunities, including a campground and swimming pool. Our Party in the Park is attended by hundreds every month, June through September where you can bring a lawn chair and listen to live music, visit the food vendors, watch the children play safely with lots of activities or just relax and enjoy the friendly company.

Our hospital is top notch and we have three motels. But the best part about Oelwein is its people. It’s wonderful to walk down the street and be greeted by smiles or hellos. People from Oelwein are loyal. We come together in disaster (the 1968 tornado for example) and in fun (Oelwein Celebration). Our unemployment rate is 2.4 percent, and there are still good paying jobs to fill. We offer a slower place than bigger cities and love our renovated downtown streetscape. So, why come to Oelwein? Just because we’re awesome!

THEN & NOW A Look Back at Yesteryear

The land that was once a cornfield has become the city Northeast Iowa knows today.

The land was entered in 1852 by a professional man, J.B. Burch, coming from Dubuque County. Burch made his business around entering land, adding a fee and high interest rate, and wouldn’t turn over the registered land until paid in full. He built the cabin that still stands today in Orville Christophel Park. The land was sold to G.A. (Frederick) Oelwein in 1857, for whom the city was named after. Oelwein was incorporated as a town in 1873.

The dawn of the railroad brought an influx of people from various cultures and countries who followed the railroad to Oelwein. It was nicknamed “Hub City” because of the rail lines coming into town and the repair shops located there. Even though most of the railroad business was moved in the 1980s, the railroad made Oelwein and the surrounding area what it is today.

In 1887, a fire destroyed the entire downtown. Being a youthful city at only 14 years old, it had not yet been realized the need of firefighting equipment. Main Street was at the mercy of the flames. In 1968, an F5 tornado devastated the community on May 15th at 4:57 p.m. A siren sounded its warning, but for only 15 seconds before the electricity failed due to the storm. The storm lasted a mere 180 seconds, but left the community in ruins and one person lost their life. The community started to clean up and recover the very next day.

There truly is only one Oelwein in the world! As a small melting pot, rich in diversity and culture, Oelwein makes it a priority to celebrate its rich heritage as a railroad hub, agricultural center and American city. Annual events include an Oelwein Celebration in June, Party in the Park June through September, Heritage Days in August and Olde Tyme Christmas in December to name a few. Many downtown promotions and events are held throughout the year.

Likewise, Oelwein is home to a wide variety of retail businesses, unique shops, restaurants, a public library, a movie theater, a bowling alley, industries, an excellent health care system, a municipal airport, a regional technical center and an excellent school system, including the Regional Academy for Math and Science and a Northeast Iowa Community College satellite center.

In addition, Oelwein is fortunate to have a daily newspaper since the 1800s and a radio station for 50 years. All of these amenities and events make Oelwein a great community for the residents in and around the community.

For those interested in an up close glimpse of Oelwein’s history, the Hub City Heritage Railway Museum, Oelwein Area Historical Museum, Oelwein Public Library and historical markers offer a look at the past.

A DEVELOPING DESTINATION A Great Place to Do Business

Oelwein is a community on the move. In recent years the city has experienced a wave of new businesses coming to town while retaining those already in operation.

While Oelwein flourished with the railroad industry back in the day, it has managed to change with the times once most rail businesses moved elsewhere in the 1980s.

Oelwein is located with supreme access in all directions. Oelwein, part of Fayette County, Iowa, is in the middle of the Upper Midwest at the intersection of state Highway 3 and 150, with interstate access to the west and south of Oelwein. The city has barge access to the east via the Mississippi River. And for those traveling via plane, the Oelwein Municipal Airport is a general service airport.

Domestic airports are close by in Waterloo, Iowa, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Dubuque, Iowa, with international airports in Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Minnesota, Des Moines, Iowa, and Chicago, Illinois. Also available is rail service, provided to Oelwein via the D & W Railroad, which is operated by Iowa Northern Railway.

With multiple modes of transportation available, owning, starting or relocating a business to Oelwein makes perfect sense, as the area’s more than 350 businesses already know. The city of Oelwein, along with its community partners, the Oelwein Chamber and Area Development, Fayette County Economic Development, and the many business partners, offers numerous tools and resources for new businesses and economic development opportunities, all while focusing on retaining its already strong business climate. These partnerships provide direct access to state incentives and technical resources, such as tax abatement, utility discounts, revolving loan funds and tax increment financing. Better yet, the city doesn’t charge any registration or business license fees.

And if the recent news reports are any indicator, companies are taking advantage of Oelwein’s commitment to business. The city recently welcomed an expansion to a battery plant that brought nearly 300 new jobs with it. The battery manufacturer has operated a distribution center for nearly a decade in Oelwein.

The new expansion opened in early 2018. Moreover, a railway plant completed a threephase expansion recently, adding over 100 new jobs. Other new economic development happenings coming to fruition is a shoe store downtown, health care and rehab expansions, a heavy equipment sales facility and a state-of-the-art hotel. The boutiquestyle hotel boasts 32 rooms, an exercise room, a laundry facility and more amenities.

The Oelwein Chamber and Area Development, and its partners, actively pursues every opportunity to give businesses the chance to thrive here, starting with a place to do business. The Oelwein Industrial Park spans over 180 acres of land along state Highway 150. There is room for expansions and new developments within that area. An option for retailers and smaller businesses is the beautiful downtown, which has undergone revitalization. These improvements included sidewalks, streets, lighting and landscaping.

Equally important to workplace satisfaction is the quality of life available outside of the office. Employers want to know that if they relocate or open a business that there are amenities and attractions in place that keep their employees happy. Oelwein’s sports complex, public parks, scenic trail system, wellness center, numerous community events and other recreational amenities keep all entertained and active.

Educational opportunities abound in Oelwein. The community is home to a public school district, a parochial school and preschools. Expanding the educational system is a satellite college facility (NICC), located in the Regional Academy of Math and Science (RAMS), a newly developed state-of-the art Regional Technical Center (RTC) and nearby universities. A HOME FOR ALL Nearby Amish Community Boasts Wealth of Culture

The nearby Amish Community is located just southwest of Oelwein off Highway 150 and Highway 281 in Buchanan County. The first settlers to the community moved from Kalona in 1914. They chose this area due to the fact that they could move their families and belongings easily and the property was reasonable for them to purchase. Currently, there are approximately 1,000 Amish residents in this community.

Amish stores are open to the public Monday through Saturday, except for specific holidays. Store hours vary, but most are open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Discount grocery, bulk food, general stores, bakeries and greenhouses are some of the stores that are open to the public, just to name a few.

Wapsie Valley Produce Auction The Wapsie Valley Produce Auction hosts a semi-annual School Auction, a large consignment auction that is held typically the third Saturday in May and the second Saturday in September. The auction consists of several auctioneers selling simultaneously during the all-day auctions. Consignment items consist of everything from quilts, to furniture, hay and farm machinery. The auctions are a fundraiser, with a percentage of all sales being used to support the Amish taught schools in the Oelwein School District.

During the growing season, produce and flower auctions are held every Tuesday and Friday mornings at 10 a.m., from May to October. Area growers, mostly Amish, bring their goods to be sold to area residents.

Flowers, plants and hot house produce are prevalent during the early Spring sales, while pumpkins, gourds and mums finish off the season in the Fall.
