A BRIEF HISTORY of Natchitoches

of Mexico to the Canadian Border. The $15 million deal, known as the Louisiana Purchase, doubled the size of the U.S. and resulted in the creation of 13 states, including Louisiana. Through all of this, the Spanish and French have left strong influences in Natchitoches. The unique and complex Creole culture is still felt today in the area’s rich history and cuisine. Many of Natchitoches’ historic landmarks continue to stand through restorative projects and maintenance. The downtown National Landmark Historic District is home to dozens of historic buildings and points of interest from the 18th, 19th and early 20th century. Guests can explore historic plantation homes, a replica of Fort St. Jean Baptiste and Louisiana’s oldest general store, among many other notable destinations in the area. he French were the first Europeans to reach the Natchitoches region at the turn of the 17th century and made friendly contact with the surrounding Caddo Indian tribes. In 1714, the site for Fort St. Jean Baptiste was chosen in what was to become the city of Natchitoches — making Natchitoches the oldest permanent settlement in the entire Louisiana Purchase. For years, Fort St. Jean Baptiste stood as a strategic trade center along the Red River. The colony, with its location near Spanish Texas and the Indian nations, began to grow around the Indian trade. France’s expulsion from North America resulted in the cession of all land on the west bank of the Mississippi, including Natchitoches, to Spain. The economy turned to tobacco and indigo production and the sale of animal products. Louisiana was ceded back to France just before U.S. President Thomas Jefferson negotiated with French Emperor Napolean Bonaparte for the purchase of land stretching from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains and from the Gulf

LOCATION & Transportation Natchitoches is centrally located in Northwest Louisiana – approximately one hour from the Louisiana-Texas border. The area is equipped with various transportation outlets – from highways and rail lines to waterways and airports – providing outstanding connectivity for residents, visitors and businesses traveling in and around Natchitoches. ith moderate year-round weather, numerous parks, access to fine lakes, rivers, bayous and national forests, Natchitoches is an attractive recreation destination for anglers, hunters, boaters, hikers and many other outdoor enthusiasts. CANE RIVER LAKE Cane River Lake is a valuable asset to the people of Natchitoches, offering many opportunities to enjoy fishing, boating, swimming, tubing and more. The lake, originally a tributary of Red River, stretches approximately 33 miles in length, meandering through Downtown Natchitoches and into Plantation Country. CITY OF NATCHITOCHES RECREATION & PARKS DEPARTMENT The City of Natchitoches Recreation & Parks Department strives to provide residents with opportunities to enjoy indoor/outdoor recreation through year-round programming and a collection of more than 20 parks and facilities. A full-size pool, spray park, extensive athletic complex with eight ball fields and four soccer fields, community centers, boat launches and more are among the department’s popular facilities. Also, the city’s many community park sites offer a range of amenities, including playground equipment, walking paths, pavilions and shaded spaces for relaxation. Additionally, the city is now moving forward with additional park spaces oriented toward pets. SIBLEY LAKE Sibley Lake is a municipal-owned body of water that serves both as the city’s primary source of drinking water and recreation area. The lake covers approximately 2,000 acres with 38 miles of shoreline. It is ideal for picnicking, camping, boating and fishing. Sibley Lake is well stocked with a healthy population of white crappie, channel catfish and largemouth bass. Additional outlying water sources great for fishing and other forms of recreation include Red River, Black Lake, Clear Lake, Saline Lake and Saline Bayou.

KISATCHIE NATIONAL FOREST www.fs.usda.gov/kisatchie Kisatchie National Forest stands as Louisiana’s sole national forest. It stretches more than 604,000 acres in seven parishes, with just over 129,000 acres contained between Natchitoches and Winn parishes. The national forest presents a long list of outdoor activities for visitors to enjoy including camping, nature viewing, picnicking, hunting, hiking, biking, horseback riding and fishing. NATCHITOCHES SHOOTING RANGE www.natchitochesshootingrange.com | (318) 356-9457 The Natchitoches Shooting Range offers several practice facilities for both members and the public. Sporting clays, lighted skeet and trap shooting are available, as is a hunting course, a rifle, pistol and archery range. NRA-certified and state-approved instructors provide staff to the shooting range: hunter education, archery training, personal protection and home safety tips as well as instruction on handling rifles, pistols and shotguns. RED RIVER www.redriverwaterway.com The Red River is an important regional feature, not only for commercial uses, but for recreation and tourism as well. The river, which links with the Mississippi River and Gulf Intercoastal Waterway, runs through Natchitoches Parish, affording a number of recreational outlets. Three facilities operated by the Red River Waterway Commission are located in the area, including the Grand Ecore Recreation Area, which features a two-lane concrete boat ramp, bank-fishing areas, picnic facilities and a boat dock; the Red Bayou Recreation Area, a popular spot for sportsmen; and the Grand Ecore Visitors Center. The visitors’ center is filled with informational displays on the past, present and future of the waterway. The grounds surrounding the center provide further historical displays and sites as well as areas for picnicking and boating.

GOLF & TENNIS Natchitoches is home to two golf and tennis facilities: the 18-hole Demon Hills course at Northwestern Hills Golf Course and a private 9-hole course. Both facilities also offer a clubhouse, swimming pool, pro shop and tennis courts – great facilities for the entire family to enjoy.

s the oldest permanent settlement in the Louisiana Purchase, Natchitoches has been the destination for travelers in northwest Louisiana for over 300 years. With a deep well of history to pull from, the city enjoys a unique and vibrant culture. From the numerous historical sites and museums around the area that preserve the stories of the past to the many festivals throughout the year that create new memories for residents and visitors alike, Natchitoches is a city that time and again shows it will continue to draw people in for many years to come. CANE RIVER NATIONAL HERITAGE AREA www.canerivernha.org | (318) 356-5555 Overseeing one of 49 National Heritage Areas recognized by Congress for their undeniable contribution to the American experience, Cane River National Heritage Area, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that engages in community partnerships to celebrate and preserve the region for the benefit of current and future generations. A largely rural, agricultural landscape, the Cane River Region is known for its historic plantations and multi-cultural legacy that includes Native American, French, Spanish, African and Creole cultures, as well as the scenic beauty of its rivers, lakes and forest. More than 30 sites are listed on the National Register of Historic places within the Cane River National Heritage Area and seven have received the honor of designation as a National Historic Landmark, the 33-block downtown district of Natchitoches included. Guided walking tours of the Natchitoches National Historic Landmark District are offered through the Cane River National Heritage Area and the Natchitoches Historic District Development Commission. Tours are given Tuesday through Saturday with seasonal hours. DOWNTOWN NATCHITOCHES www.natchitoches.com A walk along brick-paved Front Street is like a step back in time, with much of the architecture of the 19th and early 20th centuries preserved in the shops and storefronts. The two-story buildings with their iron balconies overlook Cane River Lake and it is here that many of the city’s festivals and events take place, including their signature Christmas Festival. Front Street is also the location of not just the oldest business in the city, but the oldest general store in the state of Louisiana: KaffieFrederick General Mercantile. In the same building since 1893, KaffieFrederick supplies hardware, housewares, kitchen supplies and classic toys in a nostalgic setting. Their first cash register, purchased in 1917, is still in use today.

The 33-block downtown, a designated Historic Landmark District, will entice, entertain and engage visitors no matter what their interests are. Diners will find restaurants serving Cajun and Creole favorites and world-famous Natchitoches meat pies. Antiques and gifts in quaint shops and boutiques offer shoppers a full day of exploring. For those looking to immerse themselves in culture there are numerous historic sites, local art galleries and museums. LOUISIANA SPORTS HALL OF FAME AND NORTHWEST LOUISIANA HISTORY MUSEUM www.louisianastatemuseum.org | (318) 357-2492 Hours: 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday The Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in downtown Natchitoches honors Louisiana athletes and the accomplishments that define the history of sports in the state. Exhibits showcase rare artifacts while interactive media and videos highlight in-game drama as well as the biographies and career stats of inductees. Among the more than 300 Louisiana athletes, coaches and sports figures are such household names as Shaquille O’Neal, Pete Maravich and Archie Manning, and artifacts include a Super Bowl XLIV commemorative football signed by all 53 New Orleans Saints after their 2010 victory. Exploring a history that spans hundreds of years, The Northwest Louisiana History Museum examines how the diverse groups of the Caddo Native Americans, French and Spanish Settlers, free and enslaved Africans, and rural southern whites influenced the region’s distinct culture. The museum also proudly displays the works of internationally renowned folk artist Clementine Hunter with 12 of her original paintings on display, 10 about life on Melrose Plantation. The unique design of the building itself is the work of Trahan Architects of Baton Rouge. Inspired by the surrounding landscape, the exterior is reminiscent of the shutters of plantation homes and plowed fields, while the interior with its curved walls resembles the natural cut of a river. Originally built by the Metoyer family, the preeminent members of the Isle Brevelle community populated by “gens de couleur libre,” free people of color who thrived as business people and plantation owners, the buildings and the land on which they sit have seen much that history has to offer. From the ravages of the Civil War to Reconstruction and the first formal education of former slaves on the plantation. In the early 20th century, while under the ownership of Cammie Garrett Henry, Melrose became known as a haven for authors and artists. Among those working at Melrose at the time was a cook named Clementine Hunter. Although she had no formal education, Hunter found her voice through painting after finding some discarded paints left by an artist. In her 50s when she began painting, she continued until a few months before her death in 1988 at 101 years of age. Her unique perspective of life on the plantation has made her a renowned folk artist. Her most famous work, the African House Murals, can still be viewed at Melrose Plantation. Starting the Saturday before Thanksgiving and running through Jan. 6, Natchitoches Christmas season is highlighted by the Annual Photo by Brad Ferguson Christmas Festival on the first Saturday in December. The daylong event features the “City of Lights” 5K Run/Walk & 1-Mile Fun Run and the Festival of Lights Parade, as well as live musical entertainment, arts and crafts, and food vendors. The day is capped off with a spectacular fireworks display choreographed to holiday music. Downtown attractions throughout the season include carriage rides, Holiday Kids Fest, Holiday Tour of Homes hosted by the Natchitoches Historic Foundation, fireworks every Saturday night, and visits and photos with Santa. NATCHITOCHES ALLIGATOR PARK www.alligatorpark.net | (877) 354-7001 From young four-footers to huge 1,000-pounders, visitors to the park will see hundreds of alligators in their natural habitat. Hourly shows allow the opportunity to see and participate in feedings, and learn about the alligator farming industry and conservation program. Visitors can even get their picture taken holding a baby gator. The park also features a reptile habitat, a tiny town with pigmy goats and miniature horses, a gift shop, and Gator Bites Snack Shop where authentic Cajun fare and alligator are on the menu. In determining location, downtown Natchitoches is a fantastic location for small businesses, while the area’s move-in ready business and industrial parks cater to manufacturing and larger industrial business. Major employment sectors in Natchitoches parish include education, health care and manufacturing, as well as retail trade and tourism industries. The City of Natchitoches has three primary development parks – the Air Industrial Park adjoining the FAA award-winning Natchitoches Regional Airport; Natchitoches Business Park (with 50-plus acres pending LED Certification); and the Natchitoches Industrial Park, with rail loop access and hundreds of acres to Certify. All these park areas have road access and utility infrastructure in place. The Natchitoches Parish Port consists of almost 700 acres along the Red River at River Mile 152.2. The port is a multi-modal facility with river, rail (4,000 feet of frontage on the Kansas City Southern Railroad) and highway options (3,000 feet of frontage on Louisiana Highway 486 and 4,000 on U.S. Highway 71). The port boasts a 360-acre tract of land, the first McCallum-Sweeney SmartSite, and a LED Certified Site. The site has ample utilities on-site and has easy access to the port’s docks. Additionally, the port has access to grant/loan programs to assist companies wanting to locate at the port. Workforce is the number-one priority and a number of programs are addressing this, with more being developed continuously. Northwestern State University provides very strong candidates in Industrial/Electrical Engineering Technology (IET/EET); Computer Information Systems (nationally recognized); Business and Accounting (nationally recognized) programs. A strong, localized scholarship is in place for central Louisiana students to pursue IET/EET programs to meet demand. Additionally, the Louisiana Community and Technical College System (LCTCS) offers technician training for safety, millwright, instrumentation, electrical, and controls & automation. 26

he Natchitoches Regional Medical Center now offers the community shorter ER waits, new stroke protocols, improved patient safety, a new robotics program, the opening of a walkin clinic, the opening of a wound care center, a pediatric hospitalist program, enhanced sports medicine services, and greater patient satisfaction for inpatient and outpatient care. Much of this growth and success is directly tied to the hospital’s vision and goals they put in place two years ago. First, NRMC wants to be in the top percentiles for patient satisfaction compared to national benchmarks. The hospital team uses patient feedback and patient satisfaction scores to measure how well they are doing and has seen significant improvements. Secondly, the NRMC team wants to one-day become a Top 100 Hospital. This distinction looks at many criteria including in-depth details related to quality of care and customer service. The hospital team has developed outstanding training programs, comprehensive measurement tools, and strong communication initiatives to further improve patient care and service. NRMC’s third goal is to earn the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award.
