Welcome President’s Message After over 90 years, the Morton Grove Chamber of Commerce is still going strong! That’s quite an accomplishment these days when so many local iconic buildings and companies are changing names and ownership. What has helped the MGCCI remain a viable part of the local community is the willingness of the members of our business, civic, education, faith-based, fraternal and other organizations to work together for a greater good. It is this collaborative spirit that has earned Morton Grove the accolades of being a great place to live, work and raise a family. Established in the Jazz Age, the Morton Grove Chamber embraces the use of today’s technology (social networking, online video, electronic newsletters, internet optimization and more). This is blended with the tried-andtrue common sense marketing techniques of personal networking at events like business after hours, lunches and breakfasts along with

educational programs to improve operations. The Chamber is pleased to have the Morton Grove Farmers’ Market as one of our committees. The market has become a focal point for the community to come together and let business prosper, just as it was when Morton Grove was a young farming community back in the late 1800s. Chamber of Commerce Chamber Board of Directors MARK ALBERS – PRESIDENT The Mark Albers Company Mark Albers is the founder and President of TMAC USA (The Mark Albers Company), a full-service manufacturers’ representative firm. TMAC USA provides sales, marketing and business consulting services to businesses across North America. Mark is a 30-year resident of Morton Grove who has served on the Morton Grove Public Library Board, having been elected as its President. He has been active in St. Martha’s Parish. Mark is recognized for his passion for success and bringing business ideas to companies so they may reach new levels. JIM BRODERICK – VICE PRESIDENT Money Mailer of North Cook County Jim Broderick is a marketing strategist who partners with business owners to grow their revenue and profit in local markets. After over 25 years of developing marketing and advertising campaigns, Jim has a good awareness of what works and helps the Chamber by sharing his expertise as the chair of its membership and marketing committee. In the past, he has worked as a VP of marketing at Spiegel Inc., Bass Pro, United Retail, Collections Etc. and Personal Creations. He currently owns the Money Mailer Business in Cook County. NICK MARINO – TREASURER Century 21 Marino Nick Marino has served Morton Grove and adjacent communities with personal services and a tried-and-true handshake since 1972. Known for his exceptional knowledge of real estate; his reliability and trustworthiness is coupled with personal service, making him a leader in the community he serves. Nick has served twice as the MGCCI’s President and as President of the Morton Grove Lions Club, Chicago North Side Real Estate Board and North Shore Association of Realtors. Nick has also been the Chair of the Morton Grove Foundation’s Taste of Morton Grove. DEBORAH MANNO – SECRETARY MB Financial Bank Deborah Manno is the Vice President & Banking Center Manager of MB Financial Bank located at 6201 Dempster. She specializes in retail and business development. MB Financial is a Chicago-based community bank, which has been serving businesses, organizations and residents of Morton Grove for over 100 years. Deborah is a Morton Grove resident who has over 20 years of professional banking experience. She has served on the Chamber board for over 20 years and is also a Past President. She is also involved in various community organizations with having a passion for serving the residents of Morton Grove which has allowed her to stand out amongst her peers in the field. RICH BLOCK Creative Promotional Products Rich is an executive with Creative Promotional Products, located in Skokie, where he has worked for almost a decade. He formerly owned

Rich has been a MGCCI member for over 22 years and has served as its president. He is one of the Chamber’s Farmers’ Market committee members who helps coordinate the operations of the market. Rich is on the Village of Morton Grove’s Appearance Commission. He has been married for 45 years to Penny, living in Morton Grove for over 40 years. Rich and Penny have three married children and many grandchildren. VAL NORONHA East West Financial Group Dr. Val Noronha, a graduate of The Catholic University of America, Washington, DC is the President of East West Financial Group. As a former Educator, he adds VALUE to his clients through teaching and coaching. Val lives in Morton Grove with his wife Gemma and two daughters, Emma and Eden. He is also a member of St. Martha’s Catholic Church. JULIA SI China Chef Restaurant Julia Si is a co-owner of China Chef, a well-known Chinese/Filipino restaurant which was established in 1977 and passed down from original owners and Godparents Arthur and Joyce Fong. China Chef has been helping the community by actively sponsoring local sports teams and fundraising for schools. China Chef has been a member of the Chamber for over 30 years and has been longtime sponsors for the Taste of Morton Grove. Julia and her family have been residents of Morton Grove for over 20 years. Julia believes that China Chef is more than just a restaurant, but rather a business that brings the citizens of Morton Grove closer together. She says that China Chef ’s main goal is introducing more diversity to Morton Grove and of course continuously providing excellent food and service.

Chamber of Commerce Chamber & Community Events ANNUAL GOLF OUTING The Annual Golf Outing is a tradition going back four decades. Held in mid-June, the event brings together those who enjoy a day of golf followed by cocktails and dinner. Those who don’t golf come and enjoy the refreshments and dinner along with the awards and a prize raffle of cash and valuable gifts. CABARET NIGHT This is a new tradition just a few years old. Replacing the winter VIP awards dinner, this more casual event is an opportunity for the members of the Chamber and those who support our businesses to enjoy an evening out to celebrate the founding of the Chamber back in October 1926. MGCCI ANNUAL HOLIDAY PARTY One of the best holiday parties around, this early December event is open to all for an evening of refreshments, food, live entertainment, wine raffle and more. A portion of the proceeds is donated annually to both the Niles and Maine Township Food Pantries. MORTON GROVE FARMERS’ MARKET A Committee of the Morton Grove Chamber of Commerce Established in 2010, the Morton Grove Farmers’ Market (a committee of the Morton Grove Chamber of Commerce) is a family-friendly farmers market that strives to be a local, producer market. All items are homegrown, handmade and/or vendor created from locally-owned operations. Fruits, vegetables and flowers need to be grown within a close radius of Morton Grove to provide freshness. In addition to a wide variety of wonderful vendors, the market also offers live entertainment, children’s activities, and a forum for local community groups and businesses. The market is open on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., June through October, at 6140 Dempster St. (in front of the Morton Grove Civic Center) in Morton Grove. The market also hosts an outdoor spring market and two indoor winter markets. The market is hosted by the Village of Morton Grove and the Morton Grove Park District. The MGFM Steering committee publicizes the market; books local entertainers and community groups; vets vendors; recruits sponsors and volunteers; and runs a smooth, enjoyable marketplace. TASTE OF MORTON GROVE Morton Grove Foundation The Taste of Morton Grove is held annually in March by the Morton Grove Foundation. This premier event blends charitable support for local organizations along with a sampling of the best cuisine from area caterers and restaurants along with a silent auction, raffle and other fun events. The Morton Grove Foundation provides direct grants to charities and organizations that make a positive impact on the community. The Taste of Morton Grove committee is composed of volunteers from all areas of Morton Grove from individuals and businesses to civic, education, government and charitable organizations. MORTON GROVE DAYS The very first Morton Grove Day was planned as a one-time event held in 1921 to raise funds for a monument to those from Morton Grove who fought in the First World War – the iconic “Doughboy” statue. In 1927, several civic and service organizations sponsored an annual village-wide carnival that began a longstanding tradition. The celebration later became known as Morton Grove Days and volunteers from the community who organize this event are part of the Morton Grove Days Commission. This annual event features a carnival with rides and games, live entertainment, food and beverage vendors, a parade down Dempster Street and the best fireworks display in the area on July 4 when the President’s Cup trophy is awarded by the Chamber of Commerce for the best parade entry. SPAGHETTI FEST The Education Foundation – Supporting the Students of Niles Township As a way to raise funds to support their mission to develop, acquire and distribute financial assistance and other resources to support students in need, the foundation launched a new event 2018 called Spaghetti Fest. The plan is to hold this event annually to attract new people to help support the students in need of Niles Township and have a fun night out with others in the community. Through partnerships with alumni, friends, neighbors and the business community, the Education Foundation supplements public funds with private philanthropy. Summer SIZZLE INTO SUMMER Kick off the summer season at this annual family fun event on the third Saturday in June with an evening of entertainment, inflatable fun and live music. Food and drink are available for purchase. FREE SUMMER CONCERT SERIES In Harrer Park on Tuesdays beginning in June for six summer concerts from 7 to 8:30 p.m. In case of inclement weather, the concert will move to the Park View School Gymnasium. Food and drink are available for purchase.

ANNUAL RACE TO THE TASTE 5K RUN & WALK Runners and walkers of all ages are invited to participate in the annual fall race on the first Saturday in October. All participants will receive a race T-shirt and post-race refreshments.

Morton Grove Village Overview The Village of Morton Grove has a population of 23,270 based on the 2010 Census. It is a near north suburb of Chicago located 13 miles north of the city’s Loop, eight miles northeast of busy O’Hare International Airport and six miles west of Lake Michigan’s shores. Primarily residential, the village has significant commercial and industrial areas. About 20 percent of the land in the community is owned by the Cook County Forest Preserve District with parks, woods, prairies, bike trails and open land all set aside for recreation. The community is also home to award-winning parks and schools. Village of Morton Grove Morton Grove Police Department The department maintains a full-time professional, sworn staff of 46 well-trained police officers, 11 full-time and 11 part-time civilian employees. The police department is committed to providing responsive and professional law enforcement services, preserving peace and order and maintaining the highest ethical standards possible. In 2017, the department received Tier 2 accreditation from the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police for demonstrated excellence. Community outreach programs include the

Citizens Police Academy, Police Open House, National Night Out, Coffee with a Cop, Police Explorers, Officer Friendly and voluntary residential security surveys. Morton Grove residents and businesses are encouraged to use the Morton Grove Police Department as a partner and resource to answer questions, provide advice and maintain the security of the community. Morton Grove Fire Department The department maintains a full-time professional, sworn staff of 40 firefighters and paramedics who specialize in the latest fire science and rescue techniques. Staff also includes one civilian Fire Prevention Bureau coordinator and two additional support employees. All firefighter/paramedics are certified in both firefighting and emergency medical services. Two fire stations are fully staffed 24 hours a day. Fire Station #4 is located at 6250 Lincoln and Fire Station #5 is located at 8954 Shermer Rd. Both stations maintain fire suppression equipment as well as an advanced life support ambulance.

Average response time within the village for emergency service requests is less than four minutes. The department’s Fire Prevention Bureau also provides various public education programs and resources. Basic student safety education is coordinated through the school districts while residential home fire safety inspections and senior citizen safety programs are offered on an asneeded basis. Commercial and business properties are also subject to fire safety inspections at least once a year. The department can be reached at (847) 470-5226. Village of Morton Grove Morton Grove Public Works Department The department maintains a staff of 36 full-time employees who serve as the backbone of all village maintenance services. Three divisions make up the department: The Street Division is responsible for preserving the right-of-ways throughout the village and maintaining and repairing village thoroughfares and state and county streets within the village, monitoring the village’s 50/50 tree planting program, 50/50 sidewalk replacement program, conducting snow plowing, street sweeping, and leaf collection. The Water/Sewer Division ensures the quality of the village’s water supply; making sure the quantity of water is there to suppress fires in an emergency situation; monitoring the village’s water supply and distribution at its two pumping stations and two elevated water tanks; and testing the water in order to follow

the environmental protection agency’s guidelines so potable water is at its highest standards. This division is also responsible for maintaining the sanitary, storm and combination sewers and their appurtenances in the village; maintaining and repairing all village catch basins along with storm, sanitary or combination manholes; and repairing all blockages and damage to any portion of the sewer system. The Engineering Division designs, inspects and administers construction projects within the village, including the street resurfacing and patching programs, micro-surfacing and street lighting programs, sewer video inspection and sewer lining programs and the street striping program. This group also maintains the village’s computer based geographic information system.

Resident Information Morton Grove Park District The Morton Grove Park District has been providing memorable experiences in parks and recreation since its inception in 1951. Located 10 miles northwest of Chicago, the district serves an active and engaging community of 23,000. As a separate municipal governing agency, the district is responsible for providing parks, facilities and recreational programs for the Morton Grove community. The organization is led by five elected park commissioners, 24 full-time staff and nearly 200 seasonal and part-time employees. The district owns and maintains 10 facilities, including two outdoor pools, a museum, four field houses, a 50,000-square-foot community center and 14 parks totaling over 70 acres. The district is a member of the Illinois Park and Recreation Association and the Illinois Association of Park Districts. The district also contracts with the Maine-Niles Association of Special Recreation to provide for recreational services to individuals with special needs. Resident Information Morton Grove Public Library For 80 years the Morton Grove Public Library has served the informational, educational, professional and recreational needs of Morton Grove’s diverse community. The library’s print and electronic collections provide access to thousands of items for all ages. They include the latest bestsellers and old classics, books in world languages and on various subjects, CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray discs, magazines and newspapers. The library’s online resources provide access to live tutor homework help, test preparation and software tutorials, Consumer Reports online, downloadable and streaming media and many other resources. Each month the library sponsors many informational and entertaining programs, from dramatic and musical performances to lectures on topical subjects to librarian-led book discussions and computer workshops. Story times, arts and crafts, and STEAM programs are

very popular among kids, teens, and their parents. Resident Information Niles Township Government Among other services, the Niles Township Government processes passport applications from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday with evening hours only by appointment the second and fourth Mondays each month. To keep up with a continuously changing economy, the township now serve the working poor, many single parents and senior citizens facing the “heat or eat decision.” Other people assisted by the township have experienced job elimination, extended unemployment or illness and unforeseen setbacks that can alter one’s life. Community & Charitable Organizations Morton Grove Foundation – Taste of Morton Grove The Morton Grove Foundation is an almost 30-year-old nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the well-being of the village of Morton Grove and its surrounding communities. Its purpose is to provide resources to benefit the health, welfare, education, environment and safety of area residents. The foundation provides direct grants to charities that make a positive impact on the Morton Grove community each year at its annual fundraiser, The Taste of Morton Grove, held in early March. This yearly event

consists of samplings from some of the area’s best restaurants and caterers, as well as a silent auction, a raffle and other fun events. The foundation and its charitable arm, The Taste of Morton Grove Committee, consist of resident volunteers from the citizens in the area, the business community and individuals from various roles in the village administration. Its slogan, “There is no limit to what we can do together,” reflects the foundation’s efforts and accomplishments. Since 1990, The Morton Grove Foundation has donated over $700,000 to more than 40 charitable organizations.

American Legion Post 134 The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans’ organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation’s largest wartime veterans’ service organization, committed to monitoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in the community, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security and continued devotion to service members and veterans. The first Post 134 Commander was Peter Gebel, who in 1925 was joined by the Auxiliary President Mary Hoss. Over the decades, members of many Morton Grove founding families and prominent citizens have held positions in the

Legion and Auxiliary, later followed by the Sons of the Legion. The American Legion organization depends on its active membership, participation and volunteerism. Community & Charitable Organizations M-NASR The Maine-Niles Association of Special Recreation was founded to provide quality recreation and leisure activities to those with disabilities who reside in Maine and Niles Townships. Morton Grove Garden Club “A garden is a friend you can visit anytime” is a sentiment of the Morton Grove Garden Club. They are a member of the National Council of State Garden Clubs and Garden Clubs of Illinois-IX District. Community & Charitable Organizations Morton Grove Moose Family Center 376 The Morton Grove Moose Family Center #375 is an organization that offers the community a variety of services, programs, fundraisers, charitable events and more. For over a quarter century, the Moose has directed its efforts almost completely toward Mooseheart and Moosehaven, places where the Moose fraternity collectively pours out its heart, its devotion and sustenance to the children of its members in need.

A History of Morton Grove Potawatomi Native Americans, followed by French traders, first inhabited the area around present-day Morton Grove. Farmers from England, Germany and Luxembourg started arriving in the 1830s. The community was named after banker Levi Parsons Morton. Morton was a vice president of the United States and an ambassador to France, who also served in the U.S. House of Representatives. He became Governor of New York just eight days after the village was incorporated, Dec. 24, 1895, as the Village of Morton Grove. The earliest inhabitants witnessed open prairies resembling vast seas of tall grasses and wildflowers on the flat land left by retreating glaciers. Most of these original prairies were later utilized for agriculture, and the rich soil attracted farmers. The Chicago River provided water and power to operate that area’s first sawmill in the 1830s, giving the area the name Miller’s Mill, after the owner of the saw mill located on the river just south of Dempster Street. Local farmers traveled along Miller’s Mill Road (later Lincoln Avenue) to sell their produce in Chicago. They later travelled along the railroad, when it came through in the 1870s. Greenhouses arrived in the 1890s and quickly grew into the world’s largest floral business. The floral business received worldwide recognition for taking first place for roses at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. For a time, there was more area under glass in Morton

Grove than anywhere else in the country. With the turn of the 19th into the 20th century, the village continued to grow and prosper as it welcomed home those who fought in World War I. As the Jazz Age roared on, one of the changes best illustrating the new era was the transformation of farmland into a small airfield that existed north of Dempster Street from 1919 to 1932. The Morton Grove Chamber of Commerce and Industry was founded during this optimistic time period back in 1926. The Great Depression caused the village to meet the challenges of an uncertain economy as another world conflict loomed. After World War II, a new era of growth and prosperity began as Morton Grove entered the “Baby Boom” era. People seeking a better life ventured into the suburbs out from Chicago and found Morton Grove, especially after the Edens Expressway opened. The population of Morton Grove grew from 2,010 in 1940 to 3,926 by 1950. The population soared to 20,533 in 1960, reaching a population of 23,270 by the 2010 Census. From the earliest days, when Native Americans and French traders lived off the land and European farmers grew crops in the rich soil, people from many countries who were pursuing the American Dream, have called the village home. Morton Grove continues to be incredibly close, and amazingly open.

The Morton Grove Historical Society was founded in September 1970. It currently operates the Haupt-Yehl House Museum and John & Mary Helen Slater Education Center in partnership with the Morton Grove Park District. The historical society also produces educational programs for the public and local school curriculum with its main goal to preserve and share the village’s “pieces of history” with the community. In recent years, it has restored the iconic “Doughboy” statue, published a pictorial book about Morton Grove’s history and commissioned a statue of a Potawatomi Eagle Dancer.
