AT A GLANCE A QUICK, COMPREHENSIVE OVERVIEW OF WHAT’S GREAT ABOUT THE NORTH IOWA REGION ich in history and heavy on charm, North Iowa epitomizes Midwest living. As the largest city in the region, Mason City benefits from its “crossroads” location — almost equidistant from Minneapolis and Des Moines, and convenient to Interstate 35 and Interstate 90. The community serves as the cultural, entertainment, and economic center for the nine-county region.

VIBRANT LIVING A commitment to community well-being, a rich musical heritage, four seasons of fun, and world-class architecture combine to make North Iowa a great place to live.

BOOMING BUSINESS Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa is the county’s largest employer, but Fortune 500 companies such as McKesson, Kraft Heinz, Cargill Protein, Principal Financial Group, Smithfield, and Wells Fargo are also well-established as employers of choice. Metalcraft, Kingland Systems, Sukup Manufacturing, and Dealerbuilt are local firms with a global impact. Lehigh Cement operations are a reminder of Mason City’s roots in the cement and brick and tile industry. Our economy is well balanced, and the median household income approaches $48,000. The county’s retail and trade sector serves a nine-county region. Businesses enjoy the transportation advantages of our location at the intersection of major interstate highways and access to a regional airport. Local colleges and technical training institutions help North Iowa maintain a highly-skilled and educated workforce. w

vision north iowa

Community members gathered in focus groups to discuss the future of North Iowa.

WORKING TOGETHER TO IMPROVE THE LIVES OF ALL NORTH IOWANS he North Iowa region recently embarked on an economic development strategic planning process, the end product of which will serve as a roadmap for the region’s future economic development activities and investments. Three area organizations, including the North Iowa Corridor Economic Development Corporation, Clear Lake Chamber of Commerce and Mason City Chamber of Commerce, joined forces to help initiate and facilitate “Vision North Iowa,” the region’s strategic development plan. Consulting firm TIP Strategies gathered data for 10 months and developed a plan based on the input of more than

12

1,000 stakeholders; a detailed analysis of demographic, economic and market data; several community site visits; a community perception survey; numerous focus group sessions and public workshops; and an economic development network analysis. The research resulted in a set of goals, strategies, and actions that will propel the North Iowa region toward its vision for the future.

COMMUNITY CONCIERGE he Chamber launched the Community Concierge service in fall 2016. The mission of this program is to help employees and their families relocate to the region and forge lasting connections within the community. The Chamber has found, anecdotally, that the trailing spouse and children are often the ones who make the final decision about whether to move to, or stay in, a community. This is why this program’s focus is extended to the entire family, not just the employee. The Community Concierge program has multiple facets, but the primary initiative is a referral service for Chamber member businesses. When an employer is in the final stages of recruiting, or has recently hired, a new executive/physician/plant manager/etc., they refer that employee to the Community Concierge. Assistance may include a personalized, guided tour of Mason City and nearby Clear Lake; employment for a trailing spouse; help locating quality rental housing; connections with the principal or teachers at a child’s future

Personalized, guided tours are offered to prospective employees as part of the recruitment process.

works in partnership with recruiters from Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa to ensure we attract and retain the best and brightest providers, so patients can feel confident in the care they receive.

The Chamber has also put a special focus on assisting with physician recruitment to ensure North Iowa remains a medical hub for the region. Our Community Concierge

In the long run, this service will not only attract new residents to North Iowa—it will also keep them here. The Chamber of Commerce is excited to see the Community Concierge service continue to grow in the coming years. w www.masoncityia.com

INDUSTRY & COMMERCE

The Principal serves tens of millions of customers worldwide through a national network of financial professionals and a diverse family of companies.

A COMMUNITY ON THE MARCH ndustry and commerce have thrived in North Iowa since the days of the first settlers. The local cement industry began in the early 1900s and that aspect of the regional economy continues to play an important role. Other founding industries such as brick and tile have come and gone, but each left a mark. Today, Fortune 500 companies work hand-in-hand with local, family-owned businesses to provide a wealth of services and diverse employment opportunities. The area’s largest employer is Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa. The medical center and its industry partners provide jobs that add $226.7 million to North Iowa’s economy. Hospital employees alone spend an estimated $72.7 million on retail sales and contribute $4.4 million in state sales tax revenue.

14

Sukup Manufacturing Co. is a family-owned manufacturer of grain bins, grain dryers, material handling equipment and pre-engineered metal buildings. It is also one of North Iowa’s largest employers.

Other leading employers include the public schools, Curries, Sukup Manufacturing, The Principal Financial Group Pension Center, Smithfield, Cargill Protein, McKesson Corporation, Woodharbor

Custom Cabinetry, Kraft Heinz and Mason City Clinic. Existing industries continue to expand, and many new companies have been attracted to the area through development efforts. Continuous ’

expansion and investment by several of the region’s most influential employers help the region to thrive and are a tribute to its quality workforce. North Iowa is on the leading edge of renewable fuel creation, hosting ethanol plants, a bio-diesel plant, and several wind farms. Through the development and planning stages, businesses can count on the Chamber and its partners to assist with site location, job training assistance, access to capital, incentive packages, and assistance with regulatory requirements. The region boasts several industrial parks, spec buildings, and a varied inventory of commercial real estate including sites ranging from five to 300 acres. he Chamber views Global Familiarization Trips as a way to assist in the transition to a global economy. For the most part, these destinations are important U.S. trading partners that Iowans may not feel comfortable traveling to on their own.

£

GLOBAL FAMILIARIZATION

In 2018, the Chamber hosted a customized trip to Japan.

President Dwight Eisenhower considered global travel to be the passport to world peace. “I have long believed that peaceful relations between nations requires understanding and mutual respect between individuals,” he said. The program is directed toward helping Iowans understand the culture, customs, and history of other countries as one step toward bringing the people of the world closer together.

£ On the Chambers fifth trip to China, travelers met with Ambassador Branstad (former Iowa Governor) at the U.S. Embassy in China.

Farmers’ markets and produce auctions are common practice in North Iowa.

AGRIBUSINESS FEEDING THE WORLD orth Iowans are proud of our role in feeding the world. The global food and agricultural sector faces a tremendous challenge. Authorities project that food production must increase 70

percent by 2050 in order to keep pace with global population growth and changing diets. Modern agriculture is not restricted to large-scale, capital intensive agricultural

production. Science and technology contribute to the transformation of operations of all sizes. In Iowa, agriculture employs one out of every six workers. In addition, ag-related industries are responsible for 27 percent of the state’s

Our region, which encompasses some of the world’s richest farmland, is also home to agribusinesses and value chains such as food processing and biofuel production. HOMES & NEIGHBORHOODS NORTH IOWA NEIGHBORS healthy “habitat” is necessary for well-being. Habitat comprises the places where we spend most of our waking hours – workplaces, homes, grocery stores, schools, and restaurants. Whichever way you turn, North Iowa provides a great environment to live, learn, and do business. A micropolitan region, Mason City and Clear Lake offer the small-town atmosphere – low crime rate, excellent

schools, affordable housing and amenities – without sacrificing important assets. Just one look around shows how much people care about their homes and neighborhoods. Yards are well maintained, and most housing is owner- occupied. The area boasts several exquisite residential developments for discerning buyers. The average sale price for a home is $128,424, with the median sales price at $105,000. A nice inventory of properties is available in all price ranges. In the past year, the

average days on market was 126 days. (Based on information from the Greater Mason City Board of Realtors – Mason City Multiple Listing Service for 2017). Housing is affordable and plentiful. Home styles embrace the region’s heritage while incorporating modern convenience. A wide range of styles, from the historic and classically designed Prairie homes in Rock Crest/Rock Glen to modern waterside dwellings are located throughout the area’s welcoming neighborhoods. healthy hometown community A PLACE WITH HEALTHIER, HAPPIER, AND MORE PRODUCTIVE CITIZENS HEALTHY-MASON CITY In 2014, Mason City was named a Certified Blue Zones Community. Four years later, the community continues its efforts to improve the overall well-being of citizens by making the transition from the Blue Zones Project to Wellmark’s Healthy Hometown program. Healthy-Mason City is backed by the Healthiest State Initiative that assists communities in identifying the strengths and weaknesses of policies, programs and environments for promoting health and

well-being. Through this initiative, communities are provided with the tools to take action to make their environment healthier and safer.

EAT WELL Thirty years ago obese adults made up less than 15 percent of the population. Today, two out of every three adults are overweight or obese. So, why do waistbands continue to grow? More than 75 percent of kids don’t eat green vegetables daily and instead consume items such as soda and potato chips. North Iowa restaurants have implemented healthier choices on their menus, and a local farmers market is held bi-weekly in the summer months. Mason City also hosts a number of community gardens, including a working greenhouse at the Intermediate School, where kids can grown their own produce.

MOVE MORE Transportation systems are designed for cars instead of people, resulting in reduced

48

walkability. Adults walk less than 5,000 steps a day and the number of kids who walk to school declined from 48 percent in 1969 to 16 percent in 2011. Even social connections are often virtual, instead of face-to-face. Walking paths are plentiful in North Iowa and bike trails connect the neighboring communities. Businesses encourage walking meetings and stretch breaks. Mason City has also recently installed a new bike share program for citizens and visitors.

FEEL BETTER Day-to-day activities and surroundings affect health and well-being. When citizens band together to make healthier choices easier, the results are extraordinary. Citizens and businesses in North Iowa have made a commitment to improve the emotional and physical health of residents and workers, resulting in a happier, healthier community. w

worship esidents of North Iowa are deeply rooted in their faith. People embrace the religious diversity that exists in the community, where Catholic Masses and Lutheran sermons are among the voices heard. The First Congregational United Church of Christ built a chapel in Mason City shortly after the area was settled. Today, more than 55 congregations representing many denominations meet weekly to uplift, strengthen and support one another. Newcomers to the area are welcomed and are encouraged to find a worship service to meet their needs. Each congregation has its own personality, and you are sure to find one that suits you. North Iowans are servant-leaders. Volunteers hold frequent food drives to fill the Hawkeye Harvest Food Pantry and serve daily meals at Community Kitchen.

ARCHITECTURE arcelona, Spain. Istanbul, Turkey. Tel Aviv, Israel. Florence, Italy. Miami, Florida. Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Marrakech, Morocco. Seattle, Washington. Oxford, England. Portland, Oregon. Chandigarh, India. Mason City, Iowa. What do these cities have in common? According to Conde’Nast Traveler, these are the “World’s Best Cities for Architecture Lovers.”

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT: AMERICA’S GREATEST ARCHITECT Although not a native North Iowan, famed architect and designer Frank Lloyd Wright made his mark during an early 1900s stay in Mason City. Local attorneys and businessmen James Markley and James Blythe commissioned Wright to design a new hotel and bank building that incorporated their law offices. Markley’s neighbor, Dr. G.C. Stockman, persuaded Wright to design a residence for his family.

THE HISTORIC PARK INN HOTEL The Park Inn Hotel is the world’s only remaining hotel designed by Wright. The ambitious renovation was completed in fall 2011 when it opened as a 27 room boutique hotel and conference center. The hotel

includes an upscale restaurant and lounge, conference rooms and a ballroom. Many of the hotel’s original features remain. Guided tours are provided daily by trained docents.

THE STOCKMAN HOUSE MUSEUM The Stockman House designed by Wright and built in 1908 for Dr. George and Eleanor Stockman as their family home, is now a museum. It is restored to its 1908 presentation and furnished with period pieces, reproductions of Frank Lloyd Wright furnishings, and original possessions from the Stockman family.

ROCK CREST/ROCK GLEN HISTORIC DISTRICT This development was completed in the early 1900s by colleagues from Wright’s Oak Park Studio who worked on The Park Inn/City National Bank project. The young architects eagerly accepted commissions for projects in the booming community, because Wright, who was notorious for mismanaging his finances, was frequently late in making payroll. The Rock Crest/Rock Glen neighborhood is the largest collection of Prairie School architecture that is unified by a common setting in the world.

ARCHITECTURAL WALKING TOUR Visitors can purchase a guidebook at the Historic Architecture Interpretive Center and embark on a selfguided tour of Mason City’s unique architecture. The Interpretive Center houses a gift shop and informative exhibits.

MASON CITY PUBLIC LIBRARY £

Mason City Public Library

Newly Renovated!

The historic public library, made famous in the library scene of “The Music Man,” was extensively renovated in 2010. Designed by the renowned architects Holabird & Root, the Chicago firm also oversaw the renovation and addition. In addition to its breathtaking setting, the library features a rare and distinctive literary autograph collection, and the most beautiful reading rooms in the world. ’

MUSIC The Surf books many high-profile entertainers each year who are eager to play concerts in this historic venue.

A love for music is deeply entrenched in our region’s heritage. Composer Meredith Willson gave Mason City the nickname of “River City” in his Broadway musical “The Music Man,” which he wrote as a valentine to his hometown.

VOCAL MUSIC Mason City sings! The Mason City High School Vocal Music Department has been recognized by the Grammy Foundation for its outstanding program. Its choirs are routinely invited to perform at national competitions and world class venues such as Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and the Kennedy Center.

North Iowa’s signature celebration is the annual Band Festival, held Memorial Day weekend in Mason City. It serves as a tribute to the community’s rich musical heritage and talented young musicians who carry on this tradition.

THE MUSIC MAN SQUARE

The River City Barbershop Chorus is a men’s chorus of volunteer musicians who perform across the region. It originated in 1922 as the Chamber of Commerce Glee Club, and transitioned to the Barbershop Chorus in

1952. The organization allows men of all ages and walks of life to enjoy camaraderie and amplify their love of music, while touching the hearts of loyal fans. The Una Vocis Choral Ensemble is open to adult singers through audition. In 2013, they were invited to perform at Carnegie Hall with choral composer and conductor Eric Whitacre.

TUNES FOR THE TOWN

“The Day the Music Died” is remembered each February during the “50s in February” celebration, held at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake. This annual tribute honors the memory of the original Winter Dance Party at the venue where Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and JP “The Big Bopper” Richardson performed their final concert. The three singers perished in a plane crash just outside of Clear Lake in 1959.

The Music Man Square attracts visitors from across the country to see the 1962 streetscape from The Music Man and the Meredith Willson Museum.

To showcase Mason City’s rich musical heritage, the Mason City Area Chamber of Commerce’s YIELD (Youth Investing Energy in Leadership Development) students completed a community impact project installing refurbished pianos for the public to play, entitled “Tunes for the Town.” Five public pianos are located throughout the city, both indoors and outdoors.

NORTH IOWA BAND FESTIVAL MASON CITY’S SIGNATURE CELEBRATION AND OFFICIAL KICK-OFF TO SUMMER Memorial Day Weekend

The North Iowa Band Festival provides a weekend of wholesome family entertainment and celebrates the rich musical heritage that began with the accomplishments of Meredith Willson. The annual festival, which is celebrated each year on Memorial Day weekend, showcases the talents of young musicians and accomplished professionals who are a part of North Iowa’s musical legacy. A hometown boy who made it big, Willson was born in Mason City on May 18, 1902. At the tender age of 17, he left Mason City to study music at The Julliard School in New York City. He soon earned a place with the legendary John Phillip Sousa band and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. By age 27, he was an accomplished composer and lyricist.

ART CHARLES H. MACNIDER ART MUSEUM

RIVER CITY SCULPTURES ON PARADE

One of the first stops on any cultural tour should be the Charles H. MacNider Art Museum, home to an impressive permanent collection of American art that includes work by Grant Wood (a frequent visitor to the region) and Thomas Hart Benton. The museum also hosts an extensive collection of puppets – including the marionettes used in the movie “The Sound of Music” – made and collected by world-renowned puppeteer Bil Baird (a graduate of Mason City High School). Temporary exhibits, films, concerts, art classes, an art library, and a sales/rental gallery make the museum the cornerstone of the local arts community. The site is accredited by the American Association of Museums and is wheelchair accessible.

This outdoor sculpture walk winds along a 1.6 mile loop through Downtown Mason City and leads participants to the Cultural Crescent. The works of well-regarded sculptors from around the world are included in the exhibit. The sculptures are available for sale or lease. The exhibit is changed annually.

BUILDING OUR BRAND MURAL PROJECT Thanks to a grant from the Iowa Arts Council and local building owners, Mason City is making strides in branding itself as a destination for Prairie School architecture, while also improving the appearance of the back side of downtown buildings. These beautiful murals feature geometric designs in the spirit of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Prairie School.

BOB WHITE FUSED GLASS CREATIONS Artist Bob White developed and perfected the fused glass technique. Fused glass captures and imprisons light and colors inside, permitting a detail of design not possible with stained glass. Several Mason City buildings feature Bob White fused glass creations including the First Presbyterian Church, Greek Orthodox Church, First Congregational United Church of Christ and the MacNider Art Museum.

with an intimate setting in which to enjoy incredible young talent. Classes are offered year-round.

NORTH IOWA PERFORMING ARTS & LEADERSHIP SERIES The stage of the 1,200-seat North Iowa Community Auditorium brims with talent that spans the world. Talented entertainers and musicians, Broadway shows, ballet companies, bestselling authors and captains of industry grace the stage each year.

THE HISTORIC SURF BALLROOM The Surf Ballroom is best remembered as the site for Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper’s final performance in 1959, but the ballroom continues to host a variety of musical talent. It has been restored to its original splendor and boasts a 6,300-square-foot dance floor. The Surf Ballroom’s walls bear the autographs and photographs of past performers, and it is the perfect place for a great concert or for a free self-guided tour. w www.masoncityia.com

history WE’RE PROUD OF OUR HERITAGE AND TRADITIONS he history of this region, with its winding rivers and rolling prairies, dates back to long before the area was settled by farmers and trappers. The early inhabitants of Cerro Gordo County were the Winnebago and Sioux tribes. The tribes relied upon the lush forests and bountiful lakes for many years before Joseph Hewitt and James Dickirson arrived in 1851. Hewitt and Dickirson settled on the shores of Clear Lake, a spring-fed body of water formed by glaciers that is now seven miles

long and 2.5 miles wide. At an elevation of 1,247 feet, the lake is actually higher than many of the buildings in nearby Mason City. The Clear Lake region is believed to have been visited in 1832 by Nathan Boone (son of famed explorer Daniel Boone) although it was not officially settled until 1856. Hewitt and Dickirson’s settlement soon became a Midwestern oasis. Hewitt traded with the Indians, and Dickirson farmed the rich soil. The town of Shibboleth was settled in 1853 at the convergence of the Winnebago River and Willow Creek by

Hewitt, John Long and George Brentner. The town changed names several times – to Masonic Grove, to Masonville and eventually to Mason City – all reflections of the community’s early reliance upon the brick and tile industry. A sawmill set up on the west side of the Winnebago River became the new city’s first commercial business. Settlers soon flocked to the region for its abundant water supply and additional resources. Nearby, the City of Clear Lake was settled in 1856; in 1859 the railroad brought more economic success to the area. Soon after, Mason City was incorporated. Large deposits of limestone and clay opened the doors for a thriving mining and cement industry, and by 1911 two large cement companies were operating in Mason City. The cement industry continues to be an important part of the community, where brick and tile were also once made. In 1912, the area was one of the largest producers of brick and tile in the world, but the industry has since disappeared. Mason City has now evolved to become a service, retail and distribution center.

The Mason City Municipal Airport was founded in 1927 by the Mason City Chamber of Commerce and the ClausenWorden Post of the American Legion, hence its airport code “MCW.” Charles Lindbergh attended the Mason City Airport dedication shortly after his historic transatlantic flight. Sadly, more than 30 years later, the airport became known for another historic – and tragic – event. On Feb. 3, 1959, singer and musician Buddy Holly left a performance at the Surf Ballroom’s Winter Dance Party in Clear Lake and boarded a private plane with Ritchie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson. While departing the Mason City airport in icy weather, the plane crashed in a field near Clear Lake. Today, a memorial in that cornfield is a tribute to these rock ‘n roll legends and “The Day the Music Died.” The boyhood home of composer Meredith Willson, who is best known for his Broadway musicals “The Music Man” and “The Unsinkable Molly Brown,” can be found in Mason City. Willson also wrote the familiar Christmas tune “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas.” “The Music Man”

debuted on Broadway on Dec. 19, 1957, and ran for 1,376 performances. Mason City served as the inspiration for the play’s fictional hometown of River City, which was also the setting in the big-screen Hollywood adaptation starring Shirley Jones and Robert Preston. The musical won six Tony Awards, including one for Best Musical, and has since been revived on Broadway and in the movies – a Walt Disney version starred Matthew Broderick and Kristin Chenoweth. The Beatles even performed a cover version of “Till There Was You.” Mason City locals recall another famous event. On March 13, 1934, notorious bank robber John Dillinger and his accomplice, John Hamilton, each sustained gunshot wounds while attempting to rob the First National Bank in Mason City. They only netted $52,000 from the robbery, far less than the $240,000 they expected. Dillinger had become somewhat of a Robin Hood figure to the public and had planned to use his share to flee the country. w

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

The Chamber Ambassadors welcome new business development to the area with ground breaking and ribbon cutting ceremonies.

SERVING NORTH IOWA

ur mission: to promote progressive community and economic development to benefit Chamber members and the North Iowa region. The Chamber is a membershipbased organization more than 650 strong whose members provide nearly 19,000 jobs in the region. The Chamber works for the success of its members, and strives to promote and educate to ensure the future growth of North Iowa.

VISION The Chamber’s vision is grounded in its mission. To this end, the organization works to develop a region with well-designed community programs and economic development best practices that assist free enterprise to create jobs and prosperity. Tomorrow’s headlines will be the product of actions taken today behind the scenes to keep North Iowa vibrant.

66

LEADERSHIP

ADVOCACY

The Chamber of Commerce provides leadership on key issues and strategic policy recommendations to stimulate economic growth in North Iowa. Such growth is achieved by creating an environment conducive to business success – which leads to job expansion and increased state and local revenues.

The Chamber of Commerce is a 501(c)6 organization. It is non-partisan, but does take positions on issues at the local, state and federal level to stimulate economic growth opportunities for local business. The Chamber challenges elected officials to be responsible stewards of taxpayer money, and to invest in programs and policies that will enable North Iowa to grow.

In addition, the Chamber provides three signature programs with a rich tradition of helping to shape future leaders: Leadership North Iowa for young professionals in the area; a high school youth leadership program, YIELD; and College Connections for summer interns. People who commit to these leadership programs are differencemakers; the loyal sponsors and supporting businesses are a strong testament to the effectiveness.

Joining the Chamber is a good thing to do, but what exactly does an active chamber membership say about you or your company? Studies show that being active in the local chamber of commerce is a good strategy for businesses to use in communicating to consumers that their company uses good business practices, is involved in the community, cares about customers, and is reputable and trustworthy.

CHAMBER ACCOMPLISHMENTS 100 YEARS AND COUNTING… In 1916, Mason City’s population stood at 17,712. The industrial revolution, a youthful population, a flood of immigrants, vast natural resources and a strong spirit of entrepreneurism were propelling Iowa, and the rest of the nation, forward at a dizzying pace. It was 1916 when business leaders in Mason City, with a passion for economic growth and prosperity, formed the Mason City Chamber of Commerce. Almost immediately, the Chamber began making an indelible mark in North Iowa:

68

e In 1920, the Chamber sponsored a

20-piece band of professional musicians that performed two concerts daily for 10 weeks. The only “local” musician on the roster was Meredith Willson, playing the flute and piccolo. These performances led to the establishment of the Mason City Municipal Band. e The Chamber of Commerce Glee Club

originated in 1922 under the direction of Harry Keeler. In 1952, this acapella group transitioned to the River City Barbershop Chorus. Today, more than 70 men of all ages participate in this program.

e The Chamber established a “Community

Chest” in 1923 to benefit the Red Cross, Salvation Army, Boy Scouts, YMCA and YWCA. The Chamber continued to operate this organization until 1946 when it was launched as the United Fund, and later became today’s United Way. e In 1927, the Chamber’s Aviation

Committee founded the Mason City Municipal Airport with assistance from the Clausen-Worden Post of the American Legion. Charles Lindbergh attended the airport’s dedication ceremony shortly after completing his historic transatlantic flight.

e In the late 1990s, the Chamber

spearheaded a program to install welcome signs at the four major entrances to the Mason City community. The limestone masonry structures are a nod to Mason City’s heritage. e In 2002, the Chamber began leading

annual trips to Washington, D.C., to advocate for the business community and the North Iowa region. These efforts have resulted in improved relationships with federal officials and staff members, as well as significant federal investment in the region. e The Chamber served as the applicant

and lead organization for Mason City’s Vision Iowa project, which resulted in a $9.2 million renovation to the public library; the $20 million restoration of the Historic Park Inn; construction of the Architectural Interpretive Center; and the Federal Avenue streetscape improvements. e The Chamber offers Global

Familiarization Travel opportunities as a means of helping North Iowans transition to the global economy. Destinations are important U.S. trading partners that our members may not feel comfortable traveling to on their own. Since 2011, Chamber travelers have visited China, India, Turkey, Cuba, Australia, New Zealand, Peru, South Africa, and Japan, to name a few. Community leaders release the Vision North Iowa strategic plan to the public.

e In the dark days of the Great Depression,

the Chamber organized a scrip program by issuing 10,000 one-dollar certificates. For each transaction with a Mason City merchant, a stamp was affixed to the certificate. When 52 stamps were collected, the certificate could be redeemed for 98 cents at the First National Bank. e The Chamber sponsored the very first

North Iowa Band Festival in 1938, a tradition that continues today and serves at the official kick-off to the summer season. e In 1971, the Chamber began admitting

women to its membership. It had operated as an all-male organization since 1916.

e In 2012, the North Iowa Regional

Commerce Center opened in a formerly vacant downtown building. The renovation was made possible through previous Chamber fundraising efforts earmarked for a permanent location and an I-JOBS grant from the state. The Commerce Center serves as the business hub for North Iowa. e The Chamber served as a key partner in

Mason City’s 2012 bid to be selected as a pilot Blue Zones Project community. Today, Mason City continues this effort as a Healthy Hometown community and the Chamber continues to partner as the lead for the Worksite Wellness component.

Crescent and back to the Downtown Core. More than 50 sculptures by artists from across North America are included in the exhibit. e Partnering with regional leaders, the

Chamber helped initiate the Vision North Iowa strategic plan. This project will bolster entrepreneurship, support future growth and workforce development initiatives, position North Iowa for success and enhance a quality of place for citizens. Most importantly, it will lead to an ongoing, intentional planning process for the region. e In 2017, the Chamber’s Leadership

North Iowa class led the community in the Mason City Says YES! campaign, an effort to bring a new hotel, conference center, performing arts pavilion, and multi-purpose arena to the region. The public vote passed overwhelmingly, and the Chamber has continued to promote progress on the project and will see it through to completion. e With the Chamber’s leadership, Mason

City is making strides in “Building Our Brand” as a destination for Prairie School architecture, while also improving the appearance of the back side of downtown buildings with beautiful murals in the spirit of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Prairie School. Today, the Chamber of Commerce remains true to its mission of promoting progressive community and economic development to benefit Chamber members and the North Iowa region. It remains an independent organization operated by a small group of paid staff and many volunteers. The Chamber is not supported by tax dollars and has no power to impose taxes or other measures that would directly increase the cost of living for the citizens of our community. The Chamber is simply a private business with a vested interest in activities to grow the local economy and improve the business climate. The Chamber will continue to serve its members and the North Iowa region into its second century and beyond. w
