Global Familiarization
ur Chamber views our Global Familiarization Trips as a way to assist in our transition to a global economy. For the most part, our destinations are important U.S. trading partners that people may not feel comfortable traveling to on their own.
China is the world’s largest exporter of silk. On a trip to Shanghai, travelers were given a guided tour of a silk factory.
President Dwight Eisenhower considered global travel to be the passport to world peace. “I have long believed that peaceful relations between nations requires understanding and mutual respect between individuals,” he said. Our program is directed toward helping Americans understand the culture, customs, and history of other countries as one step toward bringing the people of the world closer together. The Chamber has spearheaded multiple trips to China, as well as tours to India, Turkey, Cuba, Peru, Australia, and Egypt.
On the Chamber’s trip to India in 2013, travelers learned about the culture and customs of a relatively new country with very old roots.

Workforce IT’S ALL ABOUT THE PEOPLE
C
olleges are able to evaluate a potential student’s readiness for the rigors of a university classroom through national tests like the ACT and SAT. Until recently, employers had nothing similar to objectively assess a potential employee’s readiness for the rigors of the workplace. It was nearly impossible to ascertain which applicants had the right core skills to learn while on the job and could also apply what they already knew to the position and bring value to the company. The Mason City Area Chamber of Commerce has teamed up with Iowa Workforce Development, North Iowa Area Community College, the local school districts, Kaplan University, and others to bring the National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC) to the schools and businesses in the North Iowa region. This effort is helping to build a technologically talented local workforce. The North Iowa region has many opportunities for placement in manufacturing, offering employees on-the-job training to hone their craft.
The NCRC was developed by ACT. The three-part exam covers Applied Mathematics, Reading for Information, and Locating Information. According to employers, even a high school or higher ed diploma really tells them nothing about an applicant’s aptitude in math and reading. That is why members of the North Iowa business community are jumping on the bandwagon to get the NCRC more widely accepted in the area. The goal is to raise the baseline aptitude of the community, and at the same time give those making hiring decisions a sense of the skills and potential of the people they hire. The job skills the NCRC exam evaluates are innate intelligence as well as the core skills that are developed through education. In time, all local high school and college students will have earned the NCRC. North Iowa firms as well as firms seeking to locate here are looking for skilled workers. This program documents that North Iowa has skilled workers that are a good match for our jobs.
Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa is a teaching hospital and works closely with North Iowa Area Community College to provide training in the medical field.

Worksite Wellness
Businesses can take simple steps to promote wellness in the workplace, such as encouraging walking meetings.

ccording to Blue Zones research, people who know their purpose live up to seven years longer than those who don’t. North Iowa employers provide challenging, fulfilling work, and have a proven commitment to worksite wellness.
Nearly 40 worksites have taken the Blue Zones Project challenge to become certified. They empower employees to collaborate, innovate, and offer superior goods and services. They support employees and their families in feeling their best so they can perform at their best. Changing social norms and environments in the worksites has resulted in a 15 percent improvement in worker well-being, as measured by the GallupHealthways Well-Being Assessment.
By creating worksites that use the same well-being principles and support systems as the Blue Zones Project, the business community benefits from the sustained well-being of employees, resulting in improved performance.
The Chamber’s Worksite Wellness standing committee serves as a resource to local businesses to sustain worksite wellness efforts.

ow does Mason City stack up when it comes to cost of living? The Chamber participates in research to assist the Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER) in producing the quarterly Cost of Living Index. Raw data from metropolitan and micropolitan areas across the United States is analyzed to compare the cost of living in various geographic locations.
Here’s an example of how to use this information: Assume that City A has a composite index of 98.3 and City B has a composite index of 128.5. If you live in City A and are contemplating a job offer in City B, you can calculate how much of an increase in your after-tax income is needed to maintain your present lifestyle. Mason City is home to North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC), which serves a ninecounty region. In addition to the more traditional degree programs, NIACC boasts many excellent continuing education and training courses that are heavily utilized by industries throughout North Iowa.
Kaplan offers degree and certificate programs in fields such as health, arts and sciences, business, criminal justice, information technology and legal occupations at its Mason City campus and online.
Much of this training is housed at NIACC’s Murphy Manufacturing Technology Center. Rock Crest/Rock Glen Historic District This development was completed in the early 1900s by colleagues from Wright’s Oak Park Studio who worked on The Park Inn/City National Bank project. The young architects eagerly accepted commissions for projects in the booming community, because Wright, who was notorious for mismanaging his finances, was frequently late in making payroll. The Rock Crest/Rock Glen neighborhood is the largest collection of Prairie School architecture in the world that is unified by a common setting.

Frank Lloyd Wright: America’s greatest architect Although not a native North Iowan, famed architect and designer Frank Lloyd Wright made his mark Architectural Walking Tour during an early 1900s stay in Mason City. Local attorneys Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959) Visitors can purchase a guidebook and businessmen James Markley and James Blythe at the Historic Architecture commissioned Wright to design a new hotel and bank Interpretive Center and embark on a selfbuilding that incorporated their law offices. Markley’s neighbor, Dr. G.C. guided tour of Mason City’s unique Stockman, persuaded Wright to design a residence for his family. architecture. The Interpretive Center houses a gift shop The Historic Park Inn Hotel and informative The Park Inn Hotel is the world’s only remaining hotel designed by exhibits. Wright. The ambitious renovation was completed in Fall 2011 when it opened as a 27-room boutique hotel and conference center. The hotel includes an upscale restaurant and lounge, conference rooms and a ballroom. Many of the hotel’s original features remain. Guided tours are provided daily by trained docents. The Stockman House Museum The Stockman House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built in 1908 for Dr. George and Eleanor Stockman as their family home, is now a museum. Restored to its 1908 presentation, the house is furnished with period pieces, reproductions of Wright furnishings and original possessions from the Stockman family.

Mason City Public Library The historic public library, made famous in the library scene of “The Music Man,” was extensively renovated in 2010. The library was originally designed by the renowned architects Holabird & Root, and the Chicago firm also oversaw the renovation and addition. In addition to its breathtaking setting, the library features a rare and distinctive literary autograph collection and the most beautiful reading rooms in the world. The library provides the perfect atmosphere to Down Shift – a Blue Zones Power 9 behavior.
Musi c A love for music is deeply entrenched in our region’s heritage. Composer Meredith Willson gave Mason City the nick-name of “River City” in his Broadway musical “The Music Man,” which he wrote as a valentine to his hometown. North Iowa’s signature celebration is the annual Band Festival, held Memorial Day weekend in Mason City. It serves as a tribute to the community’s rich musical heritage and talented young musicians who carry on this tradition.
The River City Streetscape at The Music Man Square is based on the sets used in the Warner Bros. 1962 film version of The Music Man.
The Music Man Square A sculpture of famous composer and musician Meredith Willson greets visitors to The Music Man Square, where the sounds of his music fill the air. At the heart of the square are the Meredith Willson Museum and the Meredith Willson Boyhood Home, which display artifacts from his life. Tunes for the Town To showcase Mason City’s rich musical heritage, the Mason City Area Chamber of Commerce’s YIELD (Youth Investing Energy in Leadership Development) students completed a community impact project installing refurbished pianos for the public to play, entitled “Tunes for the Town.” Five public pianos are located throughout the city, both indoors and outdoors. This project aligns with the Blue Zones Project philosophy of community engagement.

Each year the Band Festival festivities include multiple concerts throughout the holiday weekend.
Rock ‘n’ roll legends “The Day the Music Died” is remembered each February during the “50s in February” celebration, held at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake. This annual tribute honors the memory of the original Winter Dance Party at the venue where Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and JP “The Big Bopper” Richardson performed their final concert. The three singers perished in a plane crash just outside of Clear Lake in 1959.

The North Iowa Band Festival provides a weekend of wholesome family entertainment and celebrates the rich musical heritage that began with the accomplishments of Meredith Willson. The annual festival, which is celebrated each year on Memorial Day weekend, showcases the talents of young musicians and accomplished professionals who are a part of North Iowa’s musical legacy.
A hometown boy who made it big, Meredith Willson was born in Mason City on May 18, 1902. At the tender age of 17, he left Mason City to study music at The Julliard School in New York City. He soon earned a place with the legendary John Phillip Sousa band and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. By age 27, he was an accomplished composer and lyricist.
Vocal music Mason City sings! The Mason City High School Vocal Music Department has been recognized by the Grammy Foundation for its outstanding program. Its choirs are routinely invited to perform at national competitions and world class venues such as Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and the Kennedy Center.
Marching bands from across the North Iowa area compete each year as part of the North Iowa band festival parade.
The River City Barbershop Chorus is a men's chorus of volunteer musicians who perform across the region. It originated in 1922 as the Chamber of Commerce Glee Club, and transitioned to the Barbershop Chorus in 1952. The organization allows men of all ages and walks of life to enjoy camaraderie and amplify their love of music, while touching the hearts of loyal fans. The Una Vocis Choral Ensemble is open to adult singers through audition. In 2013, they were invited to perform at Carnegie Hall with choral composer and conductor Eric Whitacre.

Art Charles H. MacNider Art Museum One of the first stops on any cultural tour should be the Charles H. MacNider Art Museum, home to an impressive permanent collection of American art that includes work by Grant Wood (a common visitor to the region) and Thomas Hart Benton. The museum also hosts an extensive collection of puppets – including the marionettes used in the movie “The Sound of Music” – made and collected by world-renowned puppeteer Bil Baird (a graduate of Mason City High School). Temporary exhibits, films, concerts, art classes, an art library, and a sales/rental gallery make the museum the cornerstone of the local arts community. The site is accredited by the American Association of Museums and is wheelchair accessible.
The MacNider Arts Museum is well-known for its Arts Festival which takes place each June and features area artists, kids crafts, and entertainment.
River City Sculptures on Parade This outdoor sculpture walk winds along a 1.7 mile loop through Downtown Mason City and leads participants to the Cultural Crescent. More than 50 works of well-regarded sculptors from around the world are included in the exhibit. The sculptures are available for sale or lease. The exhibit is changed annually.
“Mr. Eggwards” is a local favorite in the River City Sculptures on Parade exhibit and is one of a growing number of permanent sculptures on display.

The Historic Surf Ballroom The Surf Ballroom is best remembered as the site for Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and The Big Bopper’s final performance in 1959, but the ballroom continues to host a variety of musical talent. It has been restored to its original splendor and boasts a 6,300-squarefoot dance floor. The Surf Ballroom’s walls bear the autographs and photographs of past performers, and it is the perfect place for a great concert or for a free self-guided tour.

he history of this region, with its winding rivers and rolling prairies, dates back to long before the area was settled by farmers and trappers. The early inhabitants of Cerro Gordo County were the Winnebago and Sioux tribes. The tribes relied upon the lush forests and bountiful lakes for many years before Joseph Hewitt and James Dickirson arrived in 1851.
many of the buildings in nearby Mason City. The Clear Lake region is believed to have been visited in 1832 by Nathan Boone (son of famed explorer Daniel Boone) although it was not officially settled until 1856. Hewitt and Dickirson’s settlement soon became a Midwestern oasis. Hewitt traded with the Indians, and Dickirson farmed the rich soil. The town of Shibboleth was settled in 1853 at the convergence of the Winnebago River and Willow Creek by Hewitt, John Long, and George Brentner. The town changed names several times – to Masonic Grove, to Masonville and eventually to Mason City – all reflections of the
Hewitt and Dickirson settled on the shores of Clear Lake, a spring-fed body of water formed by glaciers that is now seven miles long and 2.5 miles wide. At an elevation of 1,247 feet, the lake is actually higher than

community’s early reliance upon the brick and tile industry.
“The Music Man” debuted on Broadway on Dec. 19, 1957, and ran for 1,376 performances. Mason City served as the inspiration for the play’s fictional hometown of River City, which was also the setting in the bigscreen Hollywood adaptation starring Shirley Jones and Robert Preston. The musical won six Tony Awards, including one for Best Musical, and has since been revived on Broadway and in the movies – a Walt Disney version starred Matthew Broderick and Kristin Chenoweth. The Beatles even performed a cover version of “Till There Was You.”
A sawmill set up on the west side of the Winnebago River became the new city’s first commercial business. Settlers soon flocked to the region for its abundant water supply and additional resources. Nearby, the City of Clear Lake was settled in 1856; in 1859 the railroad brought more economic success to the area. Soon after, Mason City was incorporated.
Large deposits of limestone and clay opened the doors for “Music Man” Meredith Willson waves to the crowd in the 1950 Band Festival parade. a thriving mining and cement industry, and by 1911 two large cement companies were operating in Mason City. The cement industry Each year, locals recall another famous event. On March 13, 1934, continues to be an important part of the community, where brick notorious bank robber John Dillinger and his accomplice, John and tile were also once made. The Mason City Municipal Airport was founded in 1927 by the Mason City Chamber of Commerce and the Clausen-Worden Post of the American Legion, hence its airport code MCW. Charles Lindbergh attended the Mason City Airport dedication shortly after his historic transatlantic flight. Sadly, more than 30 years later, the airport became known for another historic – and tragic – event. On Feb. 3, 1959, singer and musician Buddy Holly left a performance at the Surf Ballroom’s Winter Dance Party in Clear Lake and boarded a private plane with Ritchie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson. While departing the Mason City airport in icy weather, the plane crashed in a field near Clear Lake. Today, a memorial in that cornfield is a tribute to these rock ‘n’ roll legends and “The Day the Music Died.” The boyhood home of composer Meredith Willson, who is best known for his Broadway musicals “The Music Man” and “The Unsinkable Molly Brown,” can be found in Mason City. Willson also wrote the familiar Christmas tune “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas.”

Chamber Accomplishments 100 YEARS & COUNTING
I
n 1916, Mason City’s population stood at 17,712. The industrial revolution, a youthful population, a flood of immigrants, vast natural resources, and a strong spirit of entrepreneurism were propelling Iowa, and the rest of the nation, forward at a dizzying pace. It was 1916 when business leaders in Mason City, with a passion for economic growth and prosperity, formed the Mason City Chamber of Commerce. Almost immediately, the Chamber began making an indelible mark in North Iowa:
In 1920, the Chamber sponsored a 20-piece band of professional musicians that performed two concerts daily for ten weeks. The only “local” musician on the roster was Meredith Willson—playing the flute and piccolo. These performances led to the establishment of the Mason City Municipal Band. The Chamber of Commerce Glee Club originated in 1922 under the direction of Harry Keeler. In 1952, this acapella group transitioned to the River City Barbershop Chorus. Today, more than 70 men of all ages participate in this program. The Chamber established a “Community Chest” in 1923 to benefit the Red Cross, Salvation Army, Boy Scouts, YMCA and YWCA. The Chamber continued to operate this organization until 1946 when it was launched as the United Fund, and later became today’s United Way. In 1927, the Chamber’s Aviation Committee founded the Mason City Municipal Airport with assistance from the Clausen-Worden Post of the American Legion. Charles Lindbergh attended the airport’s dedication ceremony shortly after completing his historic transatlantic flight. In the dark days of the Great Depression, the Chamber organized a scrip program by issuing 10,000 one-dollar certificates. For each transaction with a Mason City merchant, a stamp was affixed to the certificate. When 52 stamps were collected, the certificate could be redeemed for 98 cents at the First National Bank.
The Chamber sponsored the very first North Iowa Band Festival in 1936, a tradition that continues today and serves at the official kick-off to the summer season. In 1971, the Chamber began admitting women to its membership. It had operated as an all-male organization since 1916. In the late 1990s, the Chamber spearheaded a program to install “WELCOME SIGNS” at the four major entrances to the Mason City community. The limestone masonry structures are a nod to Mason City’s heritage. In 2002, the Chamber began leading annual trips to Washington DC to advocate for the business community and the North Iowa region. These efforts have resulted in improved relationships with federal officials and staff members as well as significant federal investment in the region. The Chamber served as the applicant and lead organization for Mason City’s Vision Iowa project —which resulted in a $9.2 million renovation to the public library; the $20 million restoration of the Historic Park Inn; construction of the Architectural Interpretive Center; and the Federal Avenue streetscape improvements.
The Chamber offers Global Familiarization Travel opportunities as a means of helping North Iowans transition to the global economy. Destinations are important U.S. trading partners that our members may not feel comfortable traveling to on their own. Since 2011, Chamber travelers have visited China, India, Turkey, Cuba, Australia, New Zealand, and Peru to name a few. In 2012, the North Iowa Regional Commerce Center opened in a formerly vacant downtown building. The renovation was made possible through previous Chamber fundraising efforts earmarked for a permanent location and an I-JOBS grant from the state. The Commerce Center serves as the business hub for North Iowa. The Chamber served as a key partner in Mason City’s 2012 bid to be selected as a pilot Blue Zones Project community. Today, Mason City is a certified Blue Zones Community, and the Chamber continues to partner as the lead for the Worksite Wellness component. River City Sculptures on Parade has its home at the Chamber of Commerce. This sculpture walk takes participants on a 1.7 mile winding loop through the Cultural Crescent and back to the Downtown Core. Nearly 50 sculptures by artists from across North America are included in the exhibit.
Today, the Chamber of Commerce remains true to its mission of promoting progressive community and economic development to benefit Chamber members and the North Iowa region. We remain an independent organization operated by a small group of paid staff and hundreds of volunteers. The Chamber is not supported by tax dollars and has no power to impose taxes or other measures that would directly increase the cost of living for the citizens of our community. The Chamber is simply a private business with a vested interest in activities to grow the local economy and improve the business climate. As the Chamber enters its second century, it will continue to serve its members and the North Iowa region.
