n behalf of the City Council and the citizens of the City of Martinez, I invite you to discover, visit, enjoy and make your next move to Martinez.

Martinez is a strategically located historic waterfront community nestled in the beautiful rolling hills and valleys of Central Contra Costa County. Martinez is also home to a variety of residential neighborhoods ranging from turn-of-the-century Victorians and bungalows to modern homes with suburban amenities, excellent schools, attractive and popular parks and a historic downtown – all with easy access to the Bay Area, Sacramento and beyond by freeway, commuter rail and water.

We are in the process of completing implementation of a $30 million dollar parks and library improvement bond that already provided some exceptional results.

Through the bond, we have rebuilt the municipal aquatic center into a facility

recognized statewide for its excellence through a Showcase Award given by the California Park and Recreation Society District 3 Agency. We have also renovated the downtown library and completed major projects at eight park locations throughout the city. An exciting recent development is the launch of construction on the Waterfront Park Renovation Project. This project totals approximately $8 million, making it the largest bond project. The improved complex will feature additional parking, ballfield lighting, field renovations and new picnic areas. A professional baseball team is on the docket for a June 1, 2018, Opening Day in Martinez.

Our downtown offers free Wi-Fi and provides four convenient Level II electric vehicle charging port options to accommodate this growing segment of our population.

Achieving compliance with our building earthquake retrofit ordinance has paid

significant dividends, highlighted by the recent opening of several new restaurants, bars, coffee shops and other consumer-oriented businesses.

The city is also moving forward with developing a long-term vision for the city’s marina, and implementing Measure D, a halfcent special sales tax initiative approved by voters in November 2016, which will provide an influx of approximately $2.1 million annually in new road improvement and maintenance funding to fix Martinez streets during the next 15 years. It is an exciting time for Martinez, and we invite you to come and explore everything that we have to offer.

HISTORY

artinez is a city of 36,663 residents and is 13.1 square miles. It is the home of “Joltin” Joe DiMaggio.

Don Ygnacio Martinez, the early 19th century commandante of the Presidio of San Francisco, received a 17,000-acre land grant from the Mexican government in 1824 that first brought him to the Alhambra Valley. The city was named after Martinez in 1849.

From a trading post in 1849 to incorporation

Martinez was declared the county seat in 1850 and incorporated in 1876.

The local newspaper began operation in 1858, and by 1860 Martinez was the shipping port for grain from Diablo to the Livermore Valley. Railroads arrived in 1877. The Central Pacific, with the tie to the transcontinental line, came in 1879 with the world’s largest ferry boat, transporting trains across the Strait to Port Costa. in 1876, Martinez was a gold rush and shipping boomtown. Early settlers of the county bought, sold and shipped their goods here. One of them created the popular drink known as the martini.

Martinez was one of the oldest cities in California before California became a state.

Martinez catered to gold searchers who arrived on the Carquinez Strait’s south shore to take Dr. Robert Semple’s horse-powered ferry boat to Benicia on their trek to the gold country.

artinez, an East Bay city directly northeast of San Francisco, is ideally situated. The drives to Oakland and San Francisco are an easy 35 minutes and 45 minutes respectively, and San Jose and the state capital, Sacramento, are both approximately one hour away. The drive to Los Angeles is even less than a half-day from Martinez, topping out at a six-hour car ride southeast. Martinez’s central location keeps it proximal to both northern and southern California, making terrain of all kinds, like beaches, mountains and redwoods, close by.

Two international airports – San Francisco International Airport and Oakland International Airport – service the area. San Francisco

International Airport is one of the world’s 30 busiest airports and is considered the “gateway to the Pacific,” with such airlines arriving and departing as AeroMexico, American, Delta, JetBlue, U.S. Airways, Lufthansa and Virgin America, among several others. Oakland International Airport offers flights from Allegiant, Delta, JetBlue, Hawaiian Airlines, Southwest, United and U.S. Airways, along with a few others.

Martinez, like the rest of the Bay Area, is also very public transitfriendly. Martinez operates Amtrak trains, Greyhound bus lines, County Connection and BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit), which provides train service throughout the San Francisco metro area.

artinez, once home to Joe DiMaggio, Tug McGraw and Norv Turner, is nestled on the south side of the Carquinez Strait in the San Francisco Bay Area.

John Muir, a Martinez resident, devoted his life to the preservation of land. Built in 1882, Muir's home is part of the Martinez Historical Society Home Tour. Constructed of mostly redwood, the Victorian 17-room home features 12-foot-high ceilings, a black walnut staircase and Douglas fir floors. The rooms feature furnishings from that time period. The home retains its original charm and beauty, making it a focal point for all travelers.

Renowned for the many preserved historical buildings, the rustic scenery of downtown Martinez provides enjoyment for travelers.

Antique stores, curbside dining and the Mediterranean weather add to the ambiance of the city.

The Martinez Waterfront Park is located within the Martinez Regional Shoreline Park. It features play areas, picnic areas, four softball fields, a soccer field and a skate park. For the naturalist, there are several trails to enjoy while taking in the beauty of the shoreline.

Martinez is also home to America’s largest bocce ball organization.

The Martinez Bocce Ball Federation has 1,800 members playing OPEN and VOLO Bocce at night at the Waterfront Park. There are 190 teams in the league, playing on 15 courts. Currently, there are two major bocce events annually, with more scheduled in the coming years.

Drawn to California in the early 1800s in search of gold, many pioneers remained in Martinez, and were subsequently buried in the Martinez Cemetery. Tours of the popular historical cemetery are offered through the Martinez Historical Society.

Within walking distance of Amtrak and the County Connections bus hub, Martinez also has a thriving Main Street with many restaurants, shops and antique stores. Main Street Martinez hosts a variety of events, which include farmers markets, car shows, craft beer festivals and vintage fairs, to name a few. Also located in downtown Martinez is Amtrak. Forty-two trains and 12 Amtrak buses pass through the city daily, en route to various vacation destinations. The County Connection is easily accessible to transport all travelers to surrounding cities such as, Walnut Creek, Pleasant Hill and Concord, with immediate access to Bay Area Rapid Transit.

Martinez, a city rife with lush land, beautiful scenery, historical dwellings and quaint restaurants should be a key destination and noteworthy experience.

Visitors to the area often stay at the Best Western PLUS Heritage Inn at 1955 E. 2nd St., Benicia.

MARTINEZ MUSEUM The Martinez Museum is located in the 1890 Borland House at the corner of Court and Escobar Streets. The Museum is operated by the Martinez Historical Society, a volunteer organization. The Society operates three activities in the Borland House:  A museum which focuses on the history of the city of Martinez.  A local history library where research can be done on the history of the community, surrounding areas, local businesses, local families, the houses of Martinez and more.  An archival service which houses unbound and unpublished historical documents such as photographs, slides, film, letters, postcards, newspaper articles and the like.

The Museum is open during publicized hours and also by appointment. Docents are on hand to assist visitors.

Regular hours are as follows:  Tuesdays 11:30 to 3 p.m.  Thursdays 11:30 to 3 p.m.  Sunday 1 to 4 p.m.  Open on others days and times by advance arrangement.

Martinez has a long and rich history. It was founded in 1849 during the Gold Rush. It became the Contra Costa County seat the following year in 1850.

BUSINESS PROFILE Shell Refinery Martinez

shell refinery’s 700 workers share a storied history & a busy future

W

hen what is now Shell Oil Company built a petroleum re finery along the Carquinez Strait back in 1915, motordriven “horseless carriages” were still outnumbered by carriages with real horses, and the plant was the first modern-style, continuously running refinery in the United States. It could process a then-impressive 20,000 barrels of crude oil a day.

After more than a century of expansion and modernization, the Shell Martinez Refinery occupies 1,000 acres of bayside land and employs 700 people, making a major impact on the economy of the Martinez area.

Shell Martinez’s state-of-the-art facilities convert up to 165,000 barrels of crude oil a day into automotive gasoline, jet fuel, diesel, petroleum coke, industrial fuel oils, liquefied petroleum gas and sulfur. Its gasoline and diesel supply retail outlets all over the West Coast and the upper Midwest.

The refinery traces its roots to 1913, when the Royal Dutch/Shell Group built a shipping terminal to import and distribute gasoline along the Pacific Coast. The company soon purchased oilfields in California's Central Valley and began building the refinery plus a 170-mile pipeline to transport oil to Martinez.

At first the plant produced largely “heavy oil” products such as lubricating oils. But a Light Oil Processing Facility, completed in 1966, added the ability to chemically break apart, or “crack,” the longer

molecules found in crude oil into smaller molecules suitable for gasoline and diesel.

In 1983 Shell completed an $800 million modernization of its California refineries, making Shell Martinez one of the safest, most environmentally sound and most efficient in the world.

Completed in 1997, a $1 billion Clean Fuels Project enabled the refinery to comply with new state and federal regulations that require cleaner-burning gasoline. Reformulated gasoline has had a significant impact on improving air quality in the Bay Area.

Most of the 700 workers are highly skilled craftspersons and experienced operating personnel who make sure the refinery functions safely and efficiently.

A large technical staff plan for maintenance of equipment and construction of new facilities. Engineers and inspectors fine tune operations for improved efficiency. Chemists and laboratory technicians assure product quality. Other professionals provide expertise in purchasing, finance, environmental stewardship, health and safety, communications, human resources, training and other functions.

For all of them, concern for employee safety and for the environment – both at the refinery and where Shell’s products are consumed – always ranks at the top of their priorities.

artinez and other East Bay residents have access to unparalleled health care services with several hospitals and medical centers located just minutes from home.

Contra Costa’s own Contra Costa Regional Medical Center, a fullservice, 164-bed county hospital, has been deemed a “bright spot among East Bay hospitals” by the Contra Costa Times.

The medical center was one of only three California hospitals to receive the 2009 Outstanding Achievement Award from the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer, but cancer treatment isn’t the only service helping the medical center make waves in medicine. The hospital also offers emergency services, comprehensive perinatal services, senior services, psychiatric services, pediatric services, women’s health services, surgery and recovery and services from a number of other medical facilities within the hospital. The VA Northern California Health Care System also operates in the Bay Area, offering a continuum of health care services to eligible area veterans.

A few of the services offered at the locations in Martinez, Oakland, Redding, Chico, Sacramento, Vallejo and Fairfield include primary care, physical therapy, psychiatric care, alcohol treatment, cancer treatment, ambulatory treatment, radiology and substance abuse treatment.

The John Muir Medical Center, Concord is just a 15-minute drive from Martinez. The hospital is a 245-bed acute care facility serving Contra Costa and Solano counties. Some of the center’s areas of expertise include general surgery, orthopedic surgery and neurology, but John Muir Medical Center is overwhelmingly known for its superior cancer and cardiac care. John Muir Medical Center, Concord is accredited by The Joint Commission and has won such awards as the American Stroke Association’s Get with the Guidelines Gold Performance Achievement Award. Health care is also readily available at the Kaiser Permanente Martinez Medical Offices, an eight-building campus offering 25 medical services that can be accessed at www.kaiserpermanente.org.

Alhambra Convalescent Hospital offers senior health care in the area as well.

GOVERNMENT

he City of Martinez is a municipal corporation with 130 employees.

The city provides quality community services with the aim of providing a community that offers quality places for residents and businesses to live, work and play. These community services include public safety

services to protect resident health and safety, recreation and park services for resident enjoyment and infrastructure investment to support business services and development.

The City of Martinez is governed by a fivemember elected city council. The mayor and four council members are elected to fouryear terms on an overlapping basis.

The city council is responsible for representing the Martinez citizens and providing policy direction to the city manager. The city manager is responsible for implementing council policies to provide services to the community.

The City of Martinez adopts a two-year budget every other year.

The budget allocates the resources – both staff and financial – to provide municipal services. The total budget each year of the current two-year cycle is approximately $50 million.

MARTINEZ – Rich in History, Ripe for Opportunity

T

he City of Martinez is a great place to live, work, visit, and do business.

Established in 1876 as one of California’s earliest incorporated towns, Martinez has long been a destination worth seeing. Serving as Contra Costa County’s seat for over 150 years, Martinez is the birthplace of legendary baseball slugger Joe DiMaggio and the martini (first served in 1874). Famed naturalist John Muir also lived here for much of his life and his home is a National Historic Site. In downtown, historic charm and architecture commingle with exciting new businesses including fitness studios, restaurants, and a cluster of local micro-brewhouses, including two more

slated to open in 2018. Parks and recreation also continue to be one of the City’s most popular draws.

Residents and visitors have a plethora of options for outdoor activities to choose from, including 17 world-class public bocce ball courts, a 10,000 square foot Skate Park, a 1,500 seat Martinez Waterfront Amphitheater, and a Marina Complex. In addition, a professional baseball team is on the docket for a June 1, 2018 Opening Day. All these attractions and activities combined with historic residential architecture dating as far back as 125 years make Martinez a truly

unique coastal waterfront town.
