Established in Williamson County in 1841, Marion has transformed into a community of nearly 20,000 residents. As the city has grown, careful planning has led to the creation of enterprise zones, industrial parks, TIF districts and future development areas on the Hill. Marion’s location at the crossing of Interstate 57 and Route 13 make it an ideal spot for restaurants and shops. In 2006, Walmart opened one of its largest retail stores in the nation in Marion. The development of The Hill in the 2010s launched a rapidly growing, 175-acre commercial business area hosting restaurants, hotels and business headquarters, including Black Diamond Harley Davidson, Culvers and Gander RV & Outdoors. Future development is scheduled in the Hill area to serve our residents and thousands of interstate visitors. Additional development is scheduled along Route

13 with the completion of infrastructure improvements to handle the 35,000+ commuters along this major regional corridor. Abundant attractions offer visitors and residents a wide variety of cultural, outdoor and sporting activities. The Links at Kokopelli Golf Club is an 18-hole course providing a quality golf experience along with dining and banquet facilities. COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS

CITY OF MARION The City of Marion is a commission-based form of local government. Voters elect four commissioners and a mayor in four-year terms. As a group, all five are responsible for city management and general functions. Individually, each commissioner is assigned executive responsibility for a specific department. The following were elected to the 2019 city council: Mayor Michael W. Absher and City Commissioners Doug Patton, Jim Webb, John Stoecklin and John Barwick. Marion City Hall hosts council meetings every other Monday at 6:30 p.m. Marion is home to a robust list of retail stores, restaurants and entertainment opportunities. Marion leads Southern Illinois in areas of economic development, population growth, establishing TIF and enterprise zones and developing the STAR Bond District. Furthermore, Marion is one of the most economical places to live in Southern Illinois because the city levies zero property taxes on its residents.

Marion is nicknamed “The Hub of the Universe” because of its location at the crossroads of Illinois Route 13 and Interstate 57. With access to Interstate 24 just to the south, Marion is also a point of access to major cities like Chicago, Nashville and St. Louis. In addition to the Interstate system, the Veteran’s Airport of Southern Illinois provides commercial air transportation to both Nashville and St. Louis along with private service.

WILLIAMSON COUNTY The City of Marion is the county seat of Williamson County. In 2010, Williamson County had a population of 66,357. Williamson County is the largest county in Southern Illinois and continues to see growth. The county is situated conveniently by Interstate 57, Route 13 and Interstate 24, a midpoint in the region, often referred to as an area called Little Egypt. The county is home to several lakes, a large community college and many smaller villages and cities. The Veterans Airport of Southern Illinois on

Williamson County is one of 17 Illinois counties that operate under the commission form of government. Under the commission form, the county is governed by a three-person Board of Commissioners. Commissioners are elected at-large to sixyear terms. One commissioner is elected at each general election in November of evennumbered years. The Williamson County Board of Commissioners meets once a month. Regular meetings are held the second Tuesday of the month at 10 a.m. Special meetings may be held from time to time with at least 48 hours advance notice. Meetings are held at the Williamson County Administrative Building, 407 N. Monroe, Marion, in the second-floor boardroom. HISTORY

After Williamson County was formed in 1839, leaders met to select a new county seat geographically close to the center of the county. The 20 acres of land that was selected and would become the public square was owned and farmed by William and Bethany Benson. Officials met at the Benson log cabin to organize the Williamson County

Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Crab Orchard was established in 1947. This 44,000-acre refuge is a multipleuse area that blends wildlife conservation, recreation, agriculture and industry, making Crab Orchard one of the more unique refuges in the nation. Crab Orchard provides habitat for native wildlife and opportunities for people to observe and appreciate wildlife and the outdoor environment. The refuge has three major bodies of water (Crab Orchard, Devil’s Kitchen and Little Grassy Lakes) that attract anglers, hunters, campers, bird watchers and boaters from all over the Midwest. Visitors can also enjoy hiking, swimming, photography, picnicking and outdoor educational activities.

Cache River State Natural Area is situated in southernmost Illinois within a floodplain carved long ago by glacial floodwater of the Ohio River. When the Ohio River adopted its present course, it left the Cache River to meander across rich and vast wetlands. Among the outstanding natural features are massive cypress trees whose flared bases exceed 40 feet circumference. Many are more than 1,000 years old, including one

that has earned the title of state champion bald cypress because of its huge trunk girth, towering height and heavily branched canopy. The Cache River State Natural Area boasts some of the highest quality aquatic and terrestrial natural communities remaining in Illinois. Wetlands within this area are so important to migratory waterfowl and shorebirds that in 1996 the Ramsar Convention collectively designated them a Wetland of International Importance, only the 19th wetland in the United States to receive the distinction. The site offers a wide array of recreation opportunities, including hiking, biking, canoeing, fishing and seasonal hunting programs. Visit the Henry N. RECREATION The park district currently owns and provides services at seven parks covering approximately 125 acres, including a dog park and inclusive playground. The district also offers an aquatic center, pickleball complex, disc golf course and soccer complex, as well as a swim team and softball, baseball and soccer leagues. The Marion Cultural and Civic Center is Southern Illinois’ premier live entertainment

INDUSTRY The unified efforts of the city of Marion, the Chamber of Commerce and the Regional Economic Development Corporation are consistently the driving forces that bring business and industry to Marion.

AIRPORT INDUSTRIAL PARK The Airport Industrial Park is located five miles west of Interstate 57 on Route 13. Fifteen acres are available in the Business Park adjacent to Route 13. More than 200 acres are prime acreage west of the airport, some with access to the runway. Utilities are installed and long-term lease options are available.

REDCO INDUSTRIAL PARK Located on Skyline Drive in Marion, just one-half mile north of Route 13 and two miles west of Interstate 57, REDCO Industrial Park offers nearly 200 acres of mostly level land for development. The park also provides easy access to the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway. Several other industries call REDCO Industrial Park home, including three Aisin manufacturing facilities and a new RIDES Mass Transit Regional facility. Aisin has three plants located in Marion, supplying automotive parts to Toyota, GM, Subaru, Honda, & Chrysler. Aisin Manufacturing has 1,360 team members, Aisin Light Metals has 290 team members and Aisin Electronics has 445 team members. Aisin Manufacturing began production in

2002, Aisin Light Metals in 2004, and Aisin Electronics in 2005. Aisin operates other manufacturing plants across North America to support the automotive industry. Marion was selected based on its proximity to several automotive manufacturing plants, I-57, the strong network of community colleges and Southern Illinois University and a strong workforce to support long term growth. WILLIAMSON COUNTY INDUSTRIAL PARK The Williamson County Industrial Park is in a rural area five miles east of Marion and one mile north of Route 13. The park includes 500 acres available for sale that can be adjusted to meet client needs. Enterprise Zone benefits are available.

Marion is in close proximity to two institutions of higher education, Southern Illinois University and John A Logan College, which provide outstanding academic opportunities to students who want to earn a degree, expand their skills and enhance their resume.

Illinois University Carbondale now ranks among Illinois’ most comprehensive public universities. Each year, SIU Carbondale welcomes students from all 50 states and more than 100 countries who take advantage of outstanding academic programs as they pursue associate, bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral and professional degrees in law and medicine. In 2018, SIU Carbondale had a total enrollment of 12,817 students. The college has over 300 student organizations and participates in NCAA Division I Athletics.

The school includes a new health education center with an indoor track, multiple courts, a dance rehearsal area and a fitness center. SISTER CITIES

In 2005, the Marion Carnegie Library, with a $30,000 grant from the Illinois State Library, developed a Japanese resource collection to aid families transferred to the Marion Aisin Manufacturing plant. Thus began the Southern Illinois Japanese Friendship Program and the grant served as a spearhead to open Marion up to Japanese families associated with Aisin. The partners at that time were Aisin Manufacturing, Marion Carnegie Library, City of Marion, Marion Chamber of Commerce, REDCO and the Marion Unit 2 Schools. This group thought that such a program might be beneficial to the long-term relations between Marion, Aisin, Japan and Illinois. In 2006, a second grant allowed the library to expand its resource collection. Today, the library has over 1,000 books in Japanese, 150 books in English about Japan, 100 Japanese language DVDs and an extensive anime collection. In 2007, the city sought a Sister City in the Japanese prefunct (prefecture) where Aisin is

located. In 2008, The mayor of Kanie Town, Japan; school superintendent, and several city officials visited Aisin, an unofficial start becoming Sister Cities. In 2009, the city began the official discussions with Kanie to establish a Sister City relationship. The following year, Kanie Town’s mayor, several Kanie Town city officials and 12 students visited Marion for the first “official visit” and on March 26, 2010, the cities of Marion, Illinois, and Kanie Town, Aichi Prefecture, Japan signed an agreement formally recognizing each other as Sister Cities. From this point forward, the two Sister Cities have alternated their annual visits to each respective community. What started as a professional, cultural and educational relationship has now flourished into a real family partnership among all involved.
