Yorktown 2017

Mall improvements emphasize fitness 2017 will go down as the year for fitness at Yorktown Shopping Center. Yorktown hosted its Seventh Annual Healthy Lombard Fitness Fair in late February. This one-day fun health and fitness event is sponsored by Partners of Healthy Lombard, a nonprofit foundation established in 2010 to address childhood obesity and promote healthy living for everyone. Walkers of all ages are welcome at Yorktown Center any time after 6:30 a.m. daily. Anyone can enjoy this free way to keep moving. The Center has also established an expanded partnership with FIT4MOM, which offers Stroller Strides & Stroller Barre class between 9 and 10 a.m., Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Stroller Strides & Stroller Barre is a complete strength training program that provides mothers the opportunity to get in shape while working out with their children. Classes are taught by certified instructors and are appropriate for all fitness levels. Activities include body toning intervals using your stroller and the environment, along with power walking or jogging. The Stroller Strides & Barre workouts are fun and unlike any other fitness classes. Children are actively engaged in songs and activities. In addition to getting a great workout, participants become part of a supportive community of local moms. “Fitness and health as well as lifestyle changes are big priorities for us this year,” said Erin Falbo, marketing manager for Yorktown. The fact that two new fitness-related tenants are expected to move into Yorktown this year further enhances this effort to make the families of Lombard healthier. CycleBar, a premium indoor cycling studio, will come to Yorktown later this year. It is a high-energy, cycling-focused fitness facility that provides great instructors, great music and a great environment. The Barre Code will also explode on Yorktown’s fitness scene in 2017. It is a women’s fitness facility which pledges to increase one’s mobility and flexibility through stretching and full-body workouts. They particularly focus on cardio, strength and restoration. “There is always something new and exciting happening at Yorktown,” Falbo said. “We have our signature events and we also always have some tricks up our sleeves to keep everyone excited.” Incidentally, Nordstrom’s Last Chance also came to Yorktown last fall, giving the newly-fit and toned an additional place to shop!

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT Updates Improve Quality of Life for Residents Residents of Lombard will thoroughly enjoy the lineup of new businesses slated to come to the village in 2017 because they will have a direct impact on people’s daily lives. These will not be businesses that simply employ a few people and add to the municipal tax base. They will provide tangible services to the citizenry, too. The most exciting news, according to William Heniff, Lombard’s Director of Community Development, is that a 70,000-square-foot Mariano’s grocery store is being built on the site of the vacant Kmart at Roosevelt Road and Finley Avenue. It is expected to open around Labor Day. “This will be a real nice addition to the community,” Heniff said. “We started talking to Bradford Real Estate, the land purchaser and developer early in 2016. They needed to have a very quick closing on the property. So the village expedited the zoning approvals, engineering and agreement approvals. The project review was done very quickly so it was an ‘all hands on deck’ situation at the village for awhile. We had a very narrow window of time to make it work.” “The village approved an economic incentive to help with the infrastructure improvements and we partnered with the local school districts. This will be a development that will bring a higher value to the property, but won’t add students to the schools,” he added. “Even those who choose not to shop at Mariano’s will enjoy the roadway improvements being made to both Roosevelt Road and Finley Avenue. The double left turn lanes will help ease traffic issues in the area,” Heniff said. Plans are also moving forward on the construction of a Sam’s Club at the intersection of Butterfield and Fairfield roads. An old office building and a former T.G.I.Friday’s restaurant have been demolished to make way for the warehouse club, which Heniff expects to open sometime during 2018.

A new Thornton’s gas station and convenience store will soon be built at the corner of North Avenue and Route 53. In fact, four single-family homes have already been demolished on the site. At Fountain Square of Lombard, the old Champps restaurant is proposed to be demolished, with a new Yard House Restaurant to be constructed there later this year by Darden Restaurants. The property at 777 E. Butterfield Rd. that once housed the Magnum’s and Trademark restaurants has also been demolished and the property owner, Keystone Ventures LLC, is making the space available for up to four additional restaurants in two new buildings. In downtown Lombard, the former 3,800-square-foot Capone’s restaurant at 115 W. St. Charles has been purchased by Factum LLC Series 105. The restaurant owner/developer currently operates other fine dining restaurants in the City of Chicago. They have purchased the site, gutted the interior structure and entered into a parking agreement with the village. They are finalizing their restaurant name, their sit-down restaurant concept and their build-out plans. They are anticipating opening in spring 2017. “The village is also working with Yorktown representatives and GrayStar Development to redevelop 15 acres at the northern end of the existing Yorktown Center site, making it into a mixed use redevelopment called Yorktown Commons,” Heniff said. They will start construction on the first two phases this year. The first phase will feature a four-story building of high-end rental apartments for people of all ages. Phase two will be a seven-story building that is more targeted to empty-nesters, but not restricted to them, Heniff noted. At the same time, a new sanitary sewer lift station will be constructed to serve future development activity in the Yorktown area. “They got their zoning approved last fall and we expect that they will begin construction on those first two buildings by May. Both Yorktown and the village seek to create more of a neighborhood that will add value to the mall. The northern portion of the center has been an under-utilized area to which we are all hoping to bring a new vision and added value,” Heniff said. The third phase of the development will include retail businesses supported by the new development. The fourth phase of Yorktown Commons, which will include residential and possibly additional commercial uses, is anticipated in 2019 or 2020.

LILAC PARADE Behind the Scenes One of the highlights of Lilac Time in Lombard each year is the annual parade, held continuously since 1959 (but also held in 1934, 1936 and 1939). It is always held on the third Sunday of May, rain or shine. This year it is scheduled for May 21 and will proceed, as usual, from the intersection of Wilson and Main Streets, north to Maple Street and then east to Craig Place. “Although we do have an emergency plan for extremely inclement weather, to my knowledge the parade has never been canceled,” said Ellyn Murphy, chairperson. The committee, which organizes and presents the parade, has existed since 1967 and consists entirely of volunteers who live, work or have an interest in Lombard and Lilac Time. Many of the current members have been on the committee for multiple years, some as many as 20. The village funds approximately half of the parade’s operating expenses and all of the expenses involved in police and fire protection as well as the port-a-potties and barricades for the day. The rest of the costs are defrayed by sponsorships, corporate donations and fund raisers like the Adult Flashlight Easter Egg Hunt and the Wine Walk & Shop. Each year the parade, which annually attracts a crowd estimated at 16,000, features between 110 and 120 units, including the Willowbrook High School and the Glenbard East High School marching bands. Other favorites include the Kelly High School marching band, the Jessie White Tumblers, the South Shore Drill Team, the Chuck-A-Roo and the Fabulous Memories clown band and the Sinful Saints band on their antique fire engine. Animal units include Bertram’s Mini Horses, the Shriner’s Black Horse group and the Trail Riders of DuPage. Another favorite is the Shriners in the little cars, Segways and motorcycles, depending on the year. Only seated politicians serving the people of Lombard are permitted to march. No electioneering is allowed and no aspiring politicians may participate, Murphy said. 14 L O M B A R D A R E A C H A M B E R O F C O M M E R C E & I N D U S T R Y

The committee starts the planning process for each parade in February of the preceding year by selecting a theme. Themes are chosen from suggestions of community members. “We try to pick themes that will spark creativity in the people marching in the parade and to not repeat a central theme too often. It can be quite a challenge. This year, for instance, the theme is ‘Who is your hero?’ and we are hoping for real people like policemen, firemen and doctors to be honored, not just cartoon characters,” Murphy said. The theme for the next year’s parade is always announced with a walking banner at the end of the previous year’s parade.

The planning takes a break over the summer and then resumes in September. They have monthly meetings to discuss funding, organization, new participants they want to recruit, how to attract new volunteers and publicity. In January, the Parade Committee begins taking applications for participants. “We like to have a good mix of musical and non-musical acts, community-based floats and commercial participants. All units are encouraged to conform to theme but floats are required to conform. We review applications as they come in and let people know when they are approved. Applications are due by April 15,” Murphy said. In February or March, a grand marshal is chosen from nominations made by community members. Generally speaking, a grand marshal is someone who has volunteered their time and energy toward making Lombard a wonderful place to live. Past grand marshals have included Marymae Meyer, Jack Jones, Carol Bauer and Cliff Smith. The name of the grand marshal is a closely-guarded secret until announced at a village board meeting in April. Toward the end of April or very early May, the committee meets to “line up” the parade. Although there are some units that are in the front every year (police, fire, military color guards, the village board and the grand marshal) they try to move repeat units around so that no one is consistently in the front or back, Murphy said. “We also need to balance the music units so they are not drowning each other out,” she added. On the day of the parade, approximately 40 volunteers gather to help with the physical line up of the parade, answer questions from participants, make sure everyone gets to where they need to be, help with traffic flow at the end of the parade, walk the route to make sure the parade keeps moving and that watchers stay out of the street and are safe. “It is a long day. We start at 8:30 with last minute announcements and changes and are done around 4 after the last unit finishes and the golf cart procession of volunteers gets back to Glenbard East,” she said. “Then there is a critique meeting on the Monday after the parade to discuss what worked, what didn’t, what needs to be changed for next year and to review the overall day.”

REIGNING IN TRADITION Lombard’s Accomplished Young Women Ambassadors Five young Lombard women between the ages of 16 and 21 are chosen each spring to act as ambassadors for the annual Lilac Time festival and to receive $1,000 college scholarships from the Lombard Junior Women’s Club. The Lilac Queen and her court of four princesses appear at a variety of events during the 16-day “Lilac Time in Lombard” festival, including the Lilac Ball, the Art and Craft Fair and the Lilac Parade. Some of the princesses also appear at various other local events like the Special Olympics, the Lombard Park District’s Easter egg hunt and the Junior Women’s Club’s TLC day camp for children with cancer, held each June. Lilacs have been synonymous with Lombard since the estate of Colonel William Plum was bequeathed to the village in 1927. The Plum property included his home, which became the village library, and a large garden containing 200 varieties of lilac bushes. The garden eventually became Lilacia Park. This wonderful gift to the community was so valued by the local residents that three years later, in 1930, the people of Lombard began hosting an annual Lilac Festival and parade each May. The Lilac Queen program (as it was originally known) was part of that first festival and has been an integral part of the annual celebration ever since. For much of its history, the program has been viewed by the community as a beauty contest, admitted Nancy Spartz, co-chairman of the program 16 L O M B A R D A R E A C H A M B E R O F C O M M E R C E & I N D U S T R Y

for the Junior Women’s Club. Various entities within the village have run it, too, including the Lombard Jaycees. In 2002 the Lombard Junior Women’s Club took over the competition and shortly thereafter refocused it into a scholarship program that recognizes the young women’s school involvement, community involvement, speaking ability, poise, grace and personality more than just appearance. Personal appearance (including grooming and attire) are taken into account, too, however, Spartz said. “We are very interested in how these young women represent themselves, their families and their community. That is why we ask them to sign a code of conduct pledge. They know that if they violate that pledge, they can be asked to step down,” she explained. “Consequently, we caution them about the inappropriate use of social media and encourage them to grow into responsible adults.” Applications for the program are annually available all over Lombard. Generally between 20 and 27 young women apply and are interviewed by an objective panel of women from outside of the Lombard community. The princess hopefuls submit forms detailing their school and community involvement, including in some cases their grade point average, and then the judges ask each contestant three questions during a preliminary interview. The interviews and questionnaire responses are scored and then the contestants with the top five scores are named to the Lilac Court. The judges only know the princess candidates by first name and number in order to make the process as fair as possible, Spartz said. This year’s Lilac Court was announced March 14 and tiaras were bestowed at that time. Appearances by the princesses began shortly thereafter. The final judging took place in late April when each princess had a 10-minute private interview with the panel of judges. Those interviews were then scored and tallied and combined with the preliminary score for the final overall score and the Lilac Queen was chosen. She is crowned at the outset of the Lilac Festival – on May 6 this year. Then she and her court will be seen throughout the village wearing their tiaras and sashes at Lilac Time events, chaperoned by a member of the Junior

Women’s Club. They preside over the Lilac Ball, ride in the Lilac Parade, are interviewed by the media and sometimes are even asked to sign autographs, Spartz said. Co-chairs of the 2017 Princess Program are Spartz and Sue Horner. Spartz, who has been one of its chairmen several times since 2002, estimates that each of the two chairmen annually devote 200 hours to the program over the course of the six to eight weeks leading up to Lilac Time. Funding for the scholarships is annually given to the Junior Women’s Club from the Village’s Local Tourism Grant, Spartz said.

CURB APPEAL Lovely Lombard Neighborhoods Curb appeal refers to the attractiveness of a residential or commercial property, when it is viewed from the street. While most people talk about curb appeal when they are buying or selling a home, it is also important when discussing the overall look of a community. A visitor’s impression of an entire community can be the sum total of the curb appeal of the majority of homes and businesses in that town. Houses can be dressed up, for instance, by the addition of front porches, colorful front doors, roof dormers, large windows with mullions and so forth, according to Steve Flint of Flint Architects and a member of the Lombard Plan Commission. “Front porches add quaintness to homes and allow homeowners to sit outside and enjoy the neighborhood,” Flint said. “Replacing a blank roof with dormers can also give added architectural interest, depending on the style of the home,” he added. Windows and doors add to a home’s curb appeal, too, Flint said. A

colorful front door will draw the eye and large windows with mullions are also appealing. You might also consider adding a bay window with a small roof over it if you feel you need to add interest to the front elevation of your home. Pillared porticos at the front door can also help in that regard. “Even a fresh coat of paint can make a world of difference,” Flint said. Landscaping is another important element of curb appeal. In fact, the Lombard Garden Club recently recognized 10 homeowners every month during the summer for their outstanding front yard landscaping, noted Barb Madigan, Club representative.

“We did this last year and got such an enthusiastic response that we plan to continue it this summer,” Madigan said. “We found that it sparked neighborhood conversations and encouraged those living around the winners to improve their yards, too.” Madigan suggested that homeowners use a variety of plants in their yard, including evergreens to provide a base for other plantings and to provide winter color. “In years past, landscaping was more carefully manicured. Today the trend is to allow things to grow more naturally. So native grasses, perennials and other easy-tomaintain plantings are particularly popular,” she said, “as well as knock-out roses and boomerang lilacs which bloom multiple times each year.” Annuals can be used in beds, pots and hanging baskets to add pops of color and can be changed throughout the season. Artistic features, used in moderation, can also add color and interest to a garden. Whatever you choose, Madigan encouraged homeowners to consider landscaping that complements the style of your home. If you have a Victorian home, plant a Victorian-style garden overflowing with colorful flowers. If you have a contemporary home, use native grasses, stone and other hard-scaping for a clean, geometric look. Village permits are not needed for landscaping changes unless you plan to re-grade your lot, said Jennifer Ganser, Assistant Community Development Director for Lombard. But they are necessary for additions, roofs, windows, driveways, decks and fences. Permits are also required for signage on commercial properties. “Businesses all over Lombard have made big changes over the past five years to clean up the look of their properties. It has been great to see,” said Keith Steiskal of the Lombard Building Division. Businesses within a prescribed area of the downtown may even be eligible for Lombard’s façade improvement program to improve curb appeal.

Fun Things to Do in Lombard Lombard is a busy, active community with much to offer its residents. Check out some of the fun things to do in Lombard. LILACIA PARK Lombard owes Lilacia Park and its collection of lilacs to Colonel William Plum and his wife, Helen Maria Williams Plum. The Lombard Park District was founded in 1927 when the people of Lombard voted to accept the stipulations set forth in Colonel Plum’s will, which bequeathed his property to the citizens. Soon thereafter, the new park district commissioned Jens Jensen, the famous landscape architect, to design what is now known as Lilacia Park, located at 150 S. Park Ave. It’s impossible to separate Lombard from its lilacs. Lilac Time, a village-wide festival held each May, is held in Lilacia Park. It celebrates the history of Lombard’s lilacs with a coronation, historical tours, tastings, entertainment and a 5K race. Throughout the year, the Lombard Park District maintains the horticultural showcase which hosts wedding ceremonies, movies in the park, and Holiday Lights in Lilacia. For more information, visit www.lombardparks.com.

LILAC PARADE The 62nd Lombard Lilac Parade will be on Sunday, May 21. This year’s theme is “Who is your Hero?,” highlighting the beauty and pride of our wonderful Lilacia Park and village. The parade begins at 1:30 p.m. at Main and Wilson then heads north to Maple and east to Craig Place. The parade is the final event of Lilac Time in Lombard and features the Lilac Queen and Court, Glenbard East and Willowbrook Marching Bands, Two Rivers Nation Maidens & Braves, Jesse White Tumblers, Shriners, music, horses, dancers, classic cars and much more.

PARADISE BAY WATER PARK The Lombard Park District’s Paradise Bay Water Park, located at 437 E. St. Charles Rd., is a winner of the Illinois Park and Recreation Association’s Outstanding Facility and Park Award. This award winning state-of-the-art facility features Hurricane Cove, a zero-depth entry leisure pool with spouts, fountains, water sprays, whirlpool and host to a body slide, bowl slide, speed slide, and water walk. This paradise-themed park also features a 12-foot dive well, 3-meter and 1-meter dive boards and a drop slide. a

LILAC TIME ART AND CRAFT FAIR The Lilac Time Art and Craft Fair, the first outdoor event of the season, helps to kick off Lilac Time in Lombard. Held on the first Sunday in May, the Lombard community and more converge upon the downtown area to enjoy handmade arts and crafts as well as entertainment, a wide variety of food including many of Lombard’s downtown eating establishments and a Free Kid Zone. There is something for everyone at this event which runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on St. Charles Road between Main Street and Elizabeth. LILAC BALL The Lilac Ball, held each year on the second Friday in May, is a gala evening where everyone comes together to enjoy dinner and dancing with a party atmosphere. The Lilac Ball features an open bar, raffles, auctions, candy buffet and more. Some proceeds from this event are donated to the Lombard Lilac Parade and the Lilac Princess Program. The event is held at Carlisle

and some of Chicagoland’s favorite food trucks. The fest will be a celebration of summer seasonal beers, food and live music. Kick off your summer right with the Lombard Ale Fest.

ALE FEST The Lombard Ale Fest is Lombard’s premier craft beer festival. The second annual fest will take place on Saturday, June 10, from 1 to 5 p.m. Situated in the heart of downtown Lombard at Lilacia Park, the fest will feature over 80 unique beers from craft breweries around the country 2 0 1 6 - 2 0 1 7 C O M M U N I T Y M A G A Z I N E & B U S I N E S S G U I D E 21

HOLIDAY LIGHTS Enjoy charming holiday displays as the Lombard Park District flips the switch on tens of thousands of lights in Lilacia Park – a wonderland of enchantingly lit trees, a giant gingerbread house and much, much more. Youngsters can visit with Santa for free, ride the delightful Gold Medal Express train, shake hands with their favorite holiday characters, enjoy a spectacular light show and warm up by the fire with complimentary hot cocoa and cookies. The lighted park display runs through the New Year. Visit www. lombardparks.com for more information. HISTORICAL ATTRACTIONS The Lombard Historical Society maintains two historic house museums, the Victorian Cottage and the Sheldon Peck Homestead. Visitors to the Victorian Cottage will encounter a look at life in the mid-1800s when the days of the pioneer farmer in Lombard were giving way to the industrial age. Additionally, a new permanent exhibit showcases themes throughout Lombard’s history. The Sheldon Peck Homestead highlights the life of artist and abolitionist Sheldon Peck, whose house was a stop on the Underground Railroad. Exhibits focus on Peck’s folk art, pioneer life and involvement in the abolitionist movement. The Homestead is part of the National Park Service

Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. The Maple Street Chapel at the corner of Main and Maple in Lombard is a landmark the entire region recognizes and treasures. The American Gothic board-and-batten design, its stained-glass “grisaille” windows and the chapel’s simple elegance all add to its importance as an historic site. In the late 1970s, the management, repair, maintenance and preservation of the Maple Street Chapel was entrusted to a group that has grown into today’s Maple Street Chapel Preservation Society, Inc. Through the years this group has cared for and nurtured this unique community treasure.

BIKING ON THE PRAIRIE PATH AND GREAT WESTERN TRAIL The Illinois Prairie Path (IPP) and the Great Western Trail (GWT) are rail-to-trails that are easily accessible to Lombard residents. The IPP and GWT link 10,000 acres of county forest preserves, local parks and 500 miles of recreational trails. These trails are an integral part of our identity and a priceless amenity that runners, cyclists, equestrians, dog walkers and nature lovers treasure. Exercise, enjoy nature, meet neighbors, or run errands along these green ribbons. For more information on DuPage County trails or to request a County Trail Map, contact the DuPage County DOT at (630) 407-6900 or email TrailPathCoordinator@dupageco.org. LOMBARD ROLLER RINK The Lombard Roller Rink has been around for nearly 35 years. It is a family-oriented facility that offers fun for everyone from birthday parties for kids and teens, to a relaxed Friday morning Adult Skate, complete with the music you remember. Teens particularly like the rink’s Friday and Saturday night sessions when special lighting illuminates the skating floor; add glow sticks, great music and adult supervision, and they have a great time hanging out. Skating lessons for children and adults, Zumba classes, Roller Derby classes for women, a men’s Roller Derby

team and an Artistic Skate Club are also offered. Lombard Roller Rink also sells skates and hosts private events and fundraisers for schools, churches, Girl Scouts and more.

LOMBARD PARKS The Lombard Park District provides recreation opportunities for people to enjoy life.
