LOCATION & TRANSPORTATION

ogansport-Cass County is located in north central Indiana. The drives to Indianapolis, South Bend and Fort Wayne are approximately an hour and a half each. Road travel is easy here, with State Routes 17, 25, 29 and 218 as well as U.S. Routes 24 and 35 serving the area. The Hoosier Heartland Corridor provides a continuous four-lane divided highway from I-65 at Lafayette to I-75 near Toledo. It already offers speedy access to U.S. 31 and I-69, and puts us within a half-day’s drive of the Port of Toledo at the western end of Lake Erie. We’re also just 95 minutes from the Port of Indiana at Burns Harbor, the largest deep water port on Lake Michigan, as well as Northwest Indiana’s steel producers. Chicago is less than three hours by truck; Louisville and Cincinnati are less than four hours away. Air travel is accessed with ease here, too. The Logansport/Cass County Airport serves the needs of business and recreational aircraft and is located three miles south of Logansport. There are also two international airports in Indiana: the Indianapolis International Airport, which is serviced by 11 airlines, and the

Fort Wayne International Airport. Other airports within easy driving distance include South Bend Regional Airport and the Purdue University Airport. Norfolk Southern provide Class I rail service through the heart of Cass County on its Detroit-St. Louis mainline, carrying auto parts to Detroit and Kansas City-area plants, and linking with the nation’s rail network. Regional carrier Rail America travels to the west to link with BNSF’s extensive network, and we’re a short haul from intermodal facilities in Chicago, Indianapolis and Ft. Wayne. The Winamac Southern Railway is a short-line railroad with lines connecting Logansport to Kokomo and Bringhurst. Out area’s strong rail heritage means plenty of existing rail spurs, as well as open land with rail access. Cass Area Transit, in conjunction with the Cass County Council on Aging, provides the largest rural transportation service in Indiana. HISTORY

he roots of this powerful region go as far back as 1826, when the first permanent European settler arrived in present-day Logansport. that the area be called Captain Logan in honor of a Shawnee Indian who had befriended the settlers, but Logan’s Port, in reference to the town’s unique tworiver border and now popularly known as Logansport, seemed more fitting. TOURISM & ATTRACTIONS

ogansport, Cass County’s largest community, is situated at the confluence of the Eel and Wabash Rivers. Several museums focus on the area’s rich history. The Cass County Historical Society Museum, housed in an 1850s Victorian home, has three floors of local history and has offerings by noted local artists George Winter and Wils Berry. A unique look at the past is available at the Cole Clothing Museum. The historic Queen Anne Victorian boasts a collection of vintage clothing from pre-1900s to the 1970s. The Longcliff Museum is on the grounds of the oldest operating mental hospital in Indiana. Displays offer a fascinating glimpse of patient life and treatment from 1888 to today. Outdoor recreation opportunities are abundant in Cass County. France Park offers scenic trails, a waterfall and a clear swim lake with picturesque cliffs, quiet fishing areas and spacious camping facilities. The 9-11 miles of trails are active all year long with hiking, mountain biking and winter-time crosscountry skiing. The swim lake is an abandoned spring-fed quarry that attracts SCUBA divers from across Indiana. Camping enthusiasts have a choice of the park’s primitive camping or more modern facilities with bathrooms, showers, water and electrical hook-ups. Park guests can enjoy fishing in the separate 17-acre lake filled with a variety of fish including the popular bass, bluegill and catfish. France Park has a challenging 18-hole disc golf course that cuts through a scenic, wooded section of the park. Wi-Fi also is available at France Park. Little Turtle Waterway, River Bluff Trail, Eel River Run and the Panhandle Pathway offer miles of paved walking/biking trails in Cass County The Panhandle Pathway trail encompasses three counties with nine miles of the trail running from the northwest part of Cass County and ending close to France Park.

A must-see attraction is the Cass County Carousel at Riverside Park. Handcarved by artisan Gustav Dentzel and his crew more than 100 years ago, the carousel was named a National Historic Landmark in 1987. Said to be of the oldest and rarest examples of its type, the carousel was relocated and sold over the years. After it sat idle for several years, the Logansport Jaycees raised funds to purchase it in 1972. It was restored in 1993 and features 43 unique animals. Grabbing the brass ring is a tradition enjoyed by children of all ages. The lucky rider to grasp the brass ring receives a token for a free ride. “Uncover and Discover” Cass County’s annual events such as the 2 Rivers Music Festival, the Twelve Mile 500, Taste of Cass County and Art on the Avenue.

The popular 2 Rivers Music Festival was born out of the community’s love of music and the performing arts. Held at Little Turtle Waterway Plaza each June, it is the perfect venue for amazing talent and an amazing evening. The Twelve Mile 500, a unique day of racing featuring riding lawn mowers with Briggs and Stratton and other modified engines, is held July 4. Taste of Cass County is the second Saturday in August and welcomes visitors from across Indiana to sample food and drink from local eateries. Held at Little Turtle Waterway Plaza along the banks of the Wabash River, this festival brings food, fun and music to families. ith a relatively low cost of living, low crime rate and a population of just under 18,000, Logansport offers residents a relaxed lifestyle and a variety of housing options. The surrounding area also has its charms. Cass County, which stretches over 414 square miles, offers rural and semi-rural country living at its best. “We have a great mix. We have beautiful old houses close to downtown. And we have newly built construction on the east end,” said Steve Schwering of Schwering Realty. Schwering said listings often don’t stay on the market long because of increasing demand for housing. “It’s very tough for buyers right now,” he said. “They go quickly. There’s a need for more housing. The rental market is crazy.” Schwering’s company manages some 150 rental units throughout the region and often there are few, if any, vacancies. “Listings are short, sales are holding strong,” said Toni Gebhardt, owner of Pacesetters Real Estate. “There’s not a whole lot of new construction. There is a good mix of older homes that have character along with newer homes that have updates.” Gebhardt said features such as intricatelyfashioned staircases, fancy baseboards, builtin cabinetry and fireplaces are common. The demand for more housing is fueled partially by the low cost of living relative to the area’s amenities. The area’s natural beauty, accented by man-made attractions, makes life in Logansport and Cass County rich with intriguing places to visit, shop and explore. Residents find an abundance of recreational and leisure-time activities available. “There are two rivers in the center of town – the Wabash and the Eel,” said Schwering. Area residents are typically outdoors enthusiasts, cultivating hobbies such as boating, camping, fishing and hunting. The family-oriented atmosphere lends itself well to group activities. “We have several parks in town. We have a public pool that’s very nice. And we have

the walking trails,” Gebhardt said. France Park offers opportunities to go camping amidst natural beauty featuring majestic cliffs and a waterfall, Gebhardt noted. Visitors can also go swimming, fishing, hiking and biking at the popular destination. Logansport area residents also enjoy the arts and entertainment scene. “We have beautiful art all over our town. There’s an old state theater that’s been turned into a live music venue. And there are lots of restaurants and bars,” Schwering said. In Riverside Park, the McHale Community Complex houses the Dentzel Carousel, a national historic landmark that features intricately hand-carved horses. A beautifully preserved and restored work of art, the carousel delights visitors and residents alike. “It’s very beautiful,” Gebhardt said. “It’s an indoor carousel so it wouldn’t get weathered.” The Logansport Art Association, the oldest art organization in Indiana, holds several fine art competitions each year and presents classes and special events. A total of 37,000 people live within the county’s boundaries, Schwering said. The population’s low density is a plus for motorists. “You can drive from one end of town to the other in eight to 10 minutes,” he said. When residents want or need to access big-city services or resources, the state capital is a short drive away. “We’re one hour and 10 minutes north of Indianapolis,” Schwering said. Logansport is about 35 minutes northeast of Lafayette, a small city situated just east of Purdue University, a major public research university. Also not far off is Kokomo. Located about 25 miles southeast of Logansport, Kokomo is the 13th largest city in Indiana with a population of about 46,000. Seniors can find assisted living facilities at McKinney Place, a luxury apartment community, at the WoodBridge Health Campus and at Logansport Senior Citizens Village.
