CHAMBER WELCOME The Lebanon Area Chamber of Commerce’s home territory is in the heart of the Upper Valley region of New Hampshire and Vermont.

Two major interstate highways (I-89 and I-91) intersect here, as do many older roads like Route 4, Route 10, Route 12A and Route 120. Our largest employer and anchor for the region is Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, New Hampshire’s only academic medical center. Their long history of connection helps make up the richness of our story, along with the other communities who are part of the Lebanon Area Chamber— Canaan, Enfield, Canaan, Meriden and Plainfield.

H I S T O R Y Lebanon’s charter was signed by the Royal Governor of New Hampshire, Benning Wentworth, on July 4, 1761. On the same day, Governor Wentworth signed a total of 13 charters for towns along both sides of the Connecticut River — towns that today make up what is called “The Upper Valley.”

From the beginning, the Connecticut and Mascoma Rivers provided transportation routes and water power for mills manufacturing products such as textiles and leather goods. The mills became Lebanon’s largest employers, followed by the railroads

that shipped their products. In the 1950s, economic changes meant the Upper Valley had to diversify and modernize. Lebanon is now home to many high-tech enterprises, as well as Northern New England’s largest medical facility.

Beyond business and commerce, Lebanon’s history is rich and varied. In 1778, Lebanon seceded from New Hampshire to become part of Vermont due to a bitter dispute with the New Hampshire legislature, a quarrel that lasted four years before the city returned.

Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormon Church, resided in West Lebanon as a young boy.

The mid-1800s saw the beginning of a heavy migration of French Canadians who came to live and work in the United States; their influence is a rich part of Lebanon’s cultural history.

Lebanon survived a catastrophic fire in 1887, and the Flood of 1936, the most devastating tributary flood in the history of the Connecticut River. A second disastrous fire in 1964 left the center of the business community in ruins and led to a revitalization initiative that continues today.

Lebanon is truly at the crossroads of Northern New England, with Interstates 89 and 91 intersecting in White River Junction.

These major highways provide easy access to and from the Upper Valley, with Boston just two hours away by car, Montreal three hours and New York City five hours.

Lebanon is easy to get to. Dartmouth Coach is based in Lebanon with state-of-the-art buses making several round trips each day to downtown Boston, Logan Airport and New York City. A Greyhound Bus terminal in White River Junction, Vermont, provides service to Boston, New York and Montreal.

Amtrak train service runs daily from White River Junction to points north and south.

through Hanover, Lyme, Orford, Piermont and North Haverhill offers one of the most beautiful scenic trips to the White Mountains of Northern New Hampshire. Route 4A takes drivers past beautiful Mascoma Lake and the historic home of the Shakers in Enfield.

The region includes hundreds of hiking trails, rivers and lakes. A favorite snowmobile, bike and footpath enjoyed by many locals is the 60-mile Northern Rail Trail that runs from Lebanon to Boscawen along a scenic former railroad line.

Quechee Gorge in Vermont, known as “Vermont’s Little Grand Canyon,” is only 15 minutes west. The 165-foot-deep gorge appeared when the glaciers that sculpted the Green Mountains receded. In summer, visitors can enjoy local lakes, pools, and “swimming holes.” Hangliding, paragliding and ziplining are also just a short drive away.

Visitors can find a place to stay that suits their needs. There are short- and long-term stay hotels, motels, inns, bed and breakfasts and even campgrounds conveniently located both in Lebanon and throughout the Upper Valley.

The Lebanon Opera House is the cultural heart of the community. Renovated in 2002, it is the largest proscenium theater in the Upper Connecticut River Valley. Performances include theater, music, dance, educational programming and an array of family entertainment, connecting over 60,000 people annually to the performing arts. Performers known regionally and internationally take the stage for more than 250 performances each year.

The city is also home to local performance groups such as North Country Community Theater, City Center Ballet Company and Opera North.

Downtown Lebanon is home to the Upper Valley Music Center, the region’s only full-service music school. The City Center Ballet Company provides classes in ballet and jazz, and Creative Movement School of Dance proves classes in ballet, jazz and tap.

Other regional companies and classes provide belly dancing and contemporary movement.

The Alliance for the Visual Arts Gallery, located just off Colburn Park in downtown Lebanon, has been nurturing young and old artists for three decades through classes and exhibits. The facility was renovated as a green building in 2007 and includes a LEED-certified carving studio.

Performers including the Lebanon Community Band entertain at Colburn Park every Monday night throughout the summer.

Thursdays during the summer include a full day of activities in the park with a children’s concert series at noon, farmers market and crafts from 4 to 7 p.m. and evening concerts featuring nationally known folk and acoustic artists.

Outside the downtown area, two movie theaters and the renowned Hopkins Center for the Performing Arts are just a short drive away.

E D U C AT I O N Area residents have a wealth of high quality educational options for traditional students and adult learners.

Lebanon, Grantham and Plainfield maintain their own elementary schools. Lebanon High School is a comprehensive high school offering a strong college preparatory program and a variety of vocational programs. Enfield and Canaan students attend elementary schools in their own towns and then graduate to Indian River Middle School and Mascoma Valley Regional High School in Canaan. Regional high school students may also choose technical education at the Hartford Area Career and Technology Center, across the Connecticut River in Vermont. Schools often work in

concert with families of home-schooled children to include them in sports and other extracurricular activities.

Private schooling is also an option, with The Ledyard Charter School (Lebanon, grades 9-12) and Kimball Union Academy (Meriden, grades 9-12) among the choices.

River Valley Community College and Franklin Pierce University in Lebanon meet a wide range of adult learning needs, with financial aid programs, flexible class schedules and associate through doctoral degrees.

Dartmouth College, The New England School of Hair Design and Granite Air Center’s flight school also call the region home. The Upper Valley Educators Institute offers a unique accredited teacher preparation and certification program designed for adult college graduates.

GOVERNMENT In 1958, the Town of Lebanon became the City of Lebanon. The city offices are located at 51 N. Park St., in the Lebanon Opera House in downtown Lebanon. There you will find the offices of the city manager, city clerk, planning, zoning, treasurer and many of the other departments that keep the city running.

Lebanon is split into three wards, with each ward electing two councilors. The voters at-large elect three additional councilors.

Once the nine members of the city council are elected, they in turn elect a mayor from among themselves. The mayor, mostly an honorary position, serves as chair of the council and presides at civic functions.

The city manager is appointed by the city council to manage the day-to-day business of Lebanon and a city workforce of over 150 individuals. The city also has a director of public works who is responsible for the highway, water and sewer and cemetery departments.

The Lebanon Fire Department currently employs 24 career and approximately 12 on-call firefighters, and its mission is twofold: prevention and emergency response. The fire department also provides ambulance and EMT services for the city.

Lebanon’s police department is divided into

two sections: support services, supervised by the deputy police chief, and patrol services, supervised by the captain. Support services consists of the detective division, prosecution, communications, records division and facility & grounds. Patrol services consists of patrol division, training division, animal control, Explorers and Cadets and crossing guards.

Maintaining the city’s Master Plan, reviewing current projects, preparing studies, working with other departments of the city, providing administrative support to various committees of the city and meeting with property owners and developers to explain rules, regulations, ordinances and procedures, are just a few of the duties performed by the department of planning.

The Chamber is active on several city planning and advisory committees, representing the interests of regional businesses and the community.

Founded in 1932 as a cottage hospital, the mission of Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital is to provide patient-focused health care services that are responsive to community needs, promote wellness, and continually improve the quality of health care services in the community.

The hospital sees more than 90,000 patients and assists with approximately 300 births each year.

Services include dermatology, family medicine, general surgery, geriatrics, orthopedics, pediatrics, pain, plastic surgery, podiatry, neurosurgery, occupational health, radiology, rehabilitation, physical therapy, sleep health, urology and women’s care.

Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center is comprised of Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital (founded in 1893), the DartmouthHitchcock Clinic (a network of more than 900 primary and specialty care physicians located throughout New Hampshire and Vermont), Dartmouth Medical School (founded in 1797) and the Veterans Affairs Medical and Regional Office Center in White River Junction, Vermont.

The medical center is home to the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth, New Hampshire’s only children’s hospital, as well as Norris Cotton Cancer Center, one of only 41 nationwide designated by the National Cancer Institute as a comprehensive Cancer Center. The medical center is also New Hampshire’s only Level 1 Trauma Center and is served by the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Advanced Response Team, the region’s only air ambulance service.

ClearChoiceMD is an urgent care clinic dedicated to offering prompt, professional and quality care for individuals of all ages.

The center operates on a walk-in basis and is open 12 hours a day, seven days a week.

ClearChoiceMD centers are equipped to treat all urgent non-life-threatening medical needs and also offer physicals, vaccinations and occupational health services such as drug testing and DOT physicals. The center includes on-site laboratory services and X-ray, as well as prescription medications for patient convenience.

The White River Junction VA Medical Center provides health care services to eligible Veterans in Vermont and the four contiguous counties of New Hampshire. Clinical services focus on a comprehensive, compassionate continuum of care, including specialized substance abuse and PTSD care.

B U S I N E S S & I N D U S T R Y Lebanon is the center of the Upper Valley’s labor market. More than 60 percent of Lebanon residents are employed within the city limits. Nineteen percent work for nonprofit organizations; 61 percent work for private for-profit organizations; 14 percent work for local, state or the federal government; and six percent are self-employed.

There are more than 600 employers in the Lebanon area, providing work for more than 18,000 employees. Greater than 90 percent of the workforce has at least a high school diploma.

The primary sector of Lebanon’s economy is professional services, followed by retail/ wholesale and then manufacturing. Health care is a major driver of the economy, with Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and the Hitchcock Clinic topping the list of major employers in the city. High-end manufacturers Hypertherm and Timken are also significant employers in the region. International businesses of every size thrive side-by-side with small local ventures.

The Economic Vision Statement for the city states: “It is our vision to be an effective, efficient and complete full-service municipal government for the benefit of the taxpayers and citizens by nurturing existing business while encouraging retention and expansion of business; and to create new jobs, strengthen and expand the tax base by attracting clean new business while protecting our homeowners, residents and the overall quality of life.”

Lebanon’s location near the junction of two major interstates and its access by rail or by air has made it a location of choice for many emerging businesses. Its strong and educated workforce — boosted by close proximity to Dartmouth College — is another incentive to locate a new or expanding business in the Lebanon area. These economic strengths, combined with the high quality of life the Upper Valley offers, has meant that Lebanon has become a healthy, prospering community with a dedicated workforce.
