Kingsville, Texas, is a South Texas city with its own unique small-town charm. Kingsville is located approximately 45 miles southwest of Corpus Christi and 120 miles north of the Mexico border. It has a population of approximately 26, 000 people, not including military personnel or university students. HISTORY

K

Kingsville, Texas, was officially established in 1904, when the railroad came through town, but the history of this region goes back long before that time. The King Ranch, still a working cattle ranch, was founded in 1853, when Captain Richard King purchased land that was once part of the Rincon de Santa Gertrudis Mexican Land Grant. The land was originally called the Wild Horse Desert by early settlers. Captain King and his family, with the help of an entire village of people from Mexico, cleared and fenced the land, fought off raiding Indians and made the area safe for settlers. These same villagers became some of Texas’s first cowboys (the Kineños) and their descendants are a vital part of the community today.

In 1913, Texas legislators created the County of Kleberg, with Kingsville as the county seat. Shortly thereafter various events provided the impetus to further spur the growth of Kingsville: the discovery of gas and oil; the establishment of South Texas State Teacher’s College (now Texas A & M University – Kingsville); and the building of NAS-Kingsville, a premier flight training facility.

Kingsville still retains much of its early charm today as evidenced in the downtown area, designated as a Texas Main Street, with the 1904 train depot, Flato Opera House, Sims and

exas A&M University-Kingsville offers students a complete college experience through a vibrant and growing campus. The university offers a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate programs in a true living and learning environment known as Javelina Nation.

Degree offerings include well-known programs in engineering, animal and wildlife sciences, kinesiology, social work and music along with new programs in veterinary technology and criminal justice. The university is one of only two institutions in Texas offering a bachelor’s degree in architectural engineering, and the only university in the world to offer a degree in ranch management. The veterinary technology bachelor’s degree, which focuses on large animals, is the only four-year program of its kind in the state.

Classroom learning is enhanced through hands-on research opportunities, and students at both the undergraduate and graduate level have the chance to work side-by-side with faculty in one of our research centers of excellence. These centers include the internationally-renowned Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Center and the National Natural Toxins Research Center, one of the only federally funded viper centers in the country. Since the birth of the City of Kingsville, agriculture has been and remains an important economic cornerstone. Early settlers were attracted to the region by railroad publications and farm magazines that touted the warm climate, abundant artesian wells and rich soil. Farm families flocked to Kingsville and the surrounding areas, planting onions, cantaloupes, corn, cabbage and cotton, as well as raising dairy cattle, beef cattle, horses and mules. Agriculture flourished, and Kingsville was the first stop on the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway that saw farmers ship vegetables to northern markets. By 1915, the growing Kingsville dairy industry was shipping milk products as far north as Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Production practices and market demands have changed the South Texas farming operation since those early days. Kingsville

is no longer a vegetable and dairy center, but is located in one of the major cotton and grain producing areas of Texas.

Today, approximately 35,000 acres of cotton and 42,000 acres of grain sorghum are planted in Kleberg County annually. Combined, these two commodities account for an estimated 47 percent of the total annual cash value of Kingsville area agricultural products.

Beef has always been “king” in Kingsville and remains so today. In addition to being a major cow/calf producing area, stocker cattle are utilized in numerous grazing strategies and thousands of head of fat cattle are shipped each year to packers. The abundant wildlife and plant species that populate the vast South Texas rangelands surrounding Kingsville provide the foundation for an ever-growing eco-tourism industry.

Kingsville’s proximity to major highways is a plus for this community. The city sits just off U.S. Highway 77, which is a major corridor from Texas to Mexico. Highway 77, soon to become a part of the I-69 corridor, is a busy road. Both local and national truck carriers provide inbound and outbound service through connecting lines from San Antonio, Houston and Dallas.

Shipments to and from the Ports of Corpus Christi and Houston are convenient to Kingsville by truck. The city is also served with incoming and outgoing rail service by the Union Pacific Railroad.

Kingsville is located 38 miles southwest of Corpus Christi International Airport, and is served by American and Continental Airlines. Daily flights for passengers and air freight are available.

Kingsville is also immediately accessible when you fly into Kleberg County Airport. This airport has a 6,000-foot, all-weather lighted airfield capable of handling most private plane services. It also has complete fuel and repair services.

OUR LOCAL GOVERNMENT CITY & COUNTY Kingsville is the county seat for Kleberg County; it houses both city and county offices. City offices are located at Third and Kleberg Avenue. The mission of our city government is to promote the safety, health and general well-being of the community. The city’s fire department utilizes 30 employees to provide fire prevention and suppression, rescue and emergency medical services.

The Kleberg County Courthouse is centrally located in the downtown area at Kleberg and 11th Street. Through the efforts of our city police, county sheriff and judicial system, citizens of Kingsville and Kleberg County are ensured of safety, security, quality of life and, most importantly, civic pride.

FEDERAL Naval Air Station (NAS) Kingsville is only one of two facilities in the United States that houses training facilities for United States Navy and Marine Corps tactical jet and E-2/C-2 pilots to be trained. Upon completion of this training, Navy and Marine Corps Officers are designated as Naval Aviators and receive their coveted “Wings of Gold.” The United States Army has completed the building of a new facility at NAS Kingsville to house a company of Army Medevac helicopters. Homeland Security is also housed at NAS Kingsville, with over 300 agents and support staff of the U.S. Border Patrol, making NAS Kingsville a multi-service facility.
