COMMUNITY PROFILE

tasca is a delightful study in contrasts with historic buildings, charming homes and local businesses, as well as modern facilities and Fortune 500 businesses. Located 20 miles northeast of Downtown Chicago in DuPage County, Itasca offers residents, businesses and visitors access to superior transportation options, including two major interstates, Metra train service on the Milwaukee District West Line, and Pace Bus service. The newly constructed IL Rt. 390 is providing western access to nearby O’Hare International Airport. The village has also established a network of walking and bike paths around the community. Itasca has a quaint downtown, which features local merchants and restaurants. Just south of the downtown is the community’s signature green space, Usher Park. On many Saturday afternoons, visitors will see couples posing for wedding pictures in Usher Park’s iconic gazebo with the historic church in the background. Surrounding Itasca’s downtown area are many historic homes, some built in the mid-1800s. The majority of Itasca homes were built in the 1950s and 1960s, with many newer homes built on the community’s perimeter. A new 300unit luxury apartment complex has recently been completed in the Hamilton Lakes office park, providing options for those in Itasca who want to live close to work and transportation. Hamilton Lakes and Spring Lake are Itasca’s two largest office parks with a total over 4 million square feet of office space. Itasca is also has a number of industrial businesses with the largest industrial area being west of I-290. This industrial park has over 8 million square feet of industrial, flex and office space. Every year, Itasca hosts some of the area’s best festivals, including Itascafest in July and Oktoberfest in September. In partnership with Hamilton Partners, Itasca puts on the largest fireworks display in DuPage County on Independence Day.

T

he Itasca Community Library continually evolves to meet the changing needs of its patrons and community members. In addition to ever-popular print materials, the library has expanded its collection of digital content. Through its website, itascalibrary. org patrons have access to eBooks, eMusic and eMovies. Available now also are eMagazines. Patrons can access RB Digital and download from over 50 popular magazines to a tablet, smartphone or laptop. If you’ve never tried downloading to a device or computer and would like to know how, arrange a one-on-one appointment with a librarian who will walk you through all the steps to get you set up. Along with its collection of resources, the Itasca Community Library is also a dynamic community center offering programs and activities for all ages. This past year, the library has expanded its kids’ programs, adding evening story time hours for working parents and bilingual story times in Polish. We have also made great strides in organizing more

programs in the area of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) programming to help students maintain a competitive edge. This year the Youth Department won a grant that has enabled the library to purchase science kits called STEM-on-the-Go Kits that include books, DVDs and other interactive

materials on topics like architecture, robotics, coding, circuity and engineering. These are available for circulation to patrons. For adults, the library can help residents transform their lives. From offering opportunities to practice conversational English language skills to providing assistance with resume writing and technology literacy, the library helps to improve the lives of its citizens thereby strengthening the community. With the variety of special interest groups, including quilting, crafting, Mah Jongg and the ever-popular monthly Trivia Night at the local Fox and Turtle, the library is also a community hub for residents to convene, share, learn, collaborate and enjoy. In addition to having complimentary notary services, the library is now also qualified to be a passport acceptance facility. Those interested in the service may call (630) 773 1699 to make an appointment or request more information. The Itasca Community Library today houses more than books. If you haven’t already done so, drop by to see what the library has to offer. You will be amazed by the variety and depth of live programming and other amenities available to patrons of all ages.

 PARKS & PLAYGROUNDS Country Club and Washington Park playgrounds were revitalized this past year. Both received upgraded playground equipment, picnic shelters and artificial turf rather than the usual mulch. The district is working on plans for the next playground replacement: Schiller Park!

This 11.84-acre facility, south of the Softball Complex fields, was donated to the Itasca Park District by Raymond A. and Violet M. Franzen in 1985. The Franzens had a “very deep interest in all wildlife, birds, fish and animals, but especially birds, including song birds and upland game foul, his favorite of the latter being Canadian Geese” per Neil A. Franzen, son, in a letter dated 1986 to the Itasca Park District. Therefore, the land was dedicated in 1986 as the “Ray Franzen Bird Sanctuary.” Over the years, the sanctuary has remained untouched and inaccessible. Now, in 2017, with the assistance of a $363,500 OSLAD Grant, the park district is excited for this fantastic $850,000 renovation that includes Itasca’s first dog park, a nature-based play area, interpretive signage, picnic shelter and grill, half-mile boardwalk/pathway and habitat restoration. Watch for the 2018 grand opening in late spring/early summer.

 2017 GOLD MEDAL FINALIST The Itasca Park District has once again been named a Gold Medal Finalist through the National Recreation and Parks Association. Four finalists from across the nation are competing for this prestigious award. Itasca with a population of approximately 9,000 is opposing park districts with populations of up to 30,000. The park district has won this award previously in 2003 and 2009. The winner will be announced in September 2017 at the national conference. To see what is new, stop by the parks, fitness center and other facilities, and come enjoy the many special events throughout the year. Visit www.itascaparkdistrict.com for more information.

TRANSPORTATION

T

he days when commuters to Itasca’s plethora of high-end businesses end up walking, biking or calling a taxi cab when they need to get from the Itasca train station to work in one of the community’s many employers are probably gone. Beginning in early 2017, “DASH on Demand” electric vehicles, owned by Innova EV and driven by Innova employees, began operating from the Itasca Metra station. It was one of the first Innova EV implementations in the Chicago area. The professionally-driven vehicles transport commuters between the train station and their particular employer, most of which are located within the Hamilton Lakes and Spring Lake office parks. Three Innova EV vehicles currently operate the route five days a week from 6:15 to 10:15 a.m. and from 3:30 to 7:45 p.m. “This is a car ride service that connects Itasca’s various business parks to the Metra Station in Itasca,” said Nancy Hill, Itasca’s community development director. “It began operating in January and is getting lots of use now. Trips must be 3 miles or less and the fee is $3 per person, per ride.” “We see this as a ‘last mile commute’ so that those coming in on the train to work in Itasca no longer have to walk or ride a bike to their employer,” she added. “The Dash is an extension of mobility for short distances. The Dash gets you where you need to go for over 50 percent less than other rideshare services. And with our sustainable, 100 percent electric technology, you’ll be doing more than saving money — you’ll be doing a world of good for the environment,” the Innova EV website states. “Those who want to arrange a ‘DASH on Demand’ ride can do so by making a reservation on Google Play or the Apple App store,” Hill said. “Those who live in Itasca and want to take the train downtown can leave

their car at home and ride in an environmentally-friendly vehicle and those who live elsewhere and work in Itasca can commute to and from the train station more easily than in the past.” In addition, during non-peak hours, hotels are using the vehicles to transport guests around Itasca and seniors are contracting with them for rides to local physician appointments and other such nearby needs, Hill said. “There are no fixed routes for these cars, but they must operate within Itasca or just beyond its borders because they will only go short distances,” she said. Stay tuned, too, for other transportation innovations which are in the works around Itasca. Hill and her colleagues are constantly working to provide Itasca workers and residents with “last mile connections” between their homes and places of work. It also bears noting that work on the five miles of the Route 390 tollway through Itasca will be complete by the end of 2017. Construction will have then completely moved east to Wood Dale and Bensenville, Hill said. When it is complete all the way east to York Road, traffic may go north to get on I-90 or south on York Road to Irving Park Road to get around the airport. In the future there may also be a parking lot or an airport terminal on the west side of the airport, she said. “The completion of the Route 390 tollway will be a big change for Itasca residents, as well as its business owners and employees. I think that the largest benefit to our businesses – particularly those in Hamilton Lakes – is that they will receive much better visibility from both I-290 and Route 390. For some companies, that visibility is crucial. So we hope that the new Route 390 highway will bring more business to Itasca, which will increase of quality of life and keep taxes low for our 8,500 residents.” “We also hope that the new Route 390 roadway will make moving through Itasca’s five square miles even safer for both our residents and those who work in our businesses and will bring about many more development opportunities,” Hill added.

Itasca is a suburb that is envied by its neighbors. It is well positioned to thrive because of its diverse economic base and a wide range of businesses, large and small, new and well-established. While many of those businesses employ scores of people and provide services or ship product to the entire world, others primarily serve the Itasca and other Chicago area communities.

 THE RESIDENCES AT HAMILTON LAKES Itasca is not a populace, crowded community. As of 2014, the village reported population was only 8,800, making it one of the suburban area’s smallest communities in terms of population. Itasca’s residents like its size. But in order to create a more vibrant mix of restaurants and entertainment venues within the premiere Hamilton Lakes complex, Hamilton Partners and M & R Development of Chicago are currently adding to that population by constructing 297 luxury apartments in three four-story buildings along the west side of Arlington Heights Road near the Elk Grove Bank building. Be the first to experience the lifestyle of The Residences at Hamilton Lakes. There are exclusively-designed studio, one, two and three-bedroom apartment homes. Apartments range in size from 472 to 1,480 square feet. All of the apartments feature engineered hardwood floors, full-size stackable washer and dryer, porcelain tile bathroom floors, black Leedo kitchen and bath cabinetry, stainless French door Energy Star refrigerators, gas ranges, elegant quartz countertops, designer tile backsplashes, stainless faucets and stainless under-mount kitchen sinks. Rents range from $1,340 to $3,185 per month, depending upon the size of the apartment.

The Residences at Hamilton Lakes also have an amenity package that cannot be beat. Residents will enjoy amenities such as the Rejuvenation Center, complete with a steam room, sauna and hot tub which open to the outdoor pool, outfitted with cabana for a true VIP experience. And you can forget the gym membership. Visit the 24-hour Flex Fitness Center which is a fully-equipped fitness room and the Movement Studio, highlighting on-demand workout programs. They are also pet friendly, so bring your pup and visit the Paw Spa. Perks also offered include heated indoor parking, free outdoor parking, car charging, a bicycle sharing program and additional storage. The Residences at Hamilton Lakes offers both luxury and practicality. All three buildings are now available for residency. This prime location is only minutes from shopping, dining and entertainment. Discover the lifestyle you’ve been looking for at The Residences at Hamilton Lakes.

 ITASCA BREWING COMPANY, INC. Beer enthusiasts have a new reason to flock to Itasca and the Itasca Country Club. The new Itasca Brewing Company Nano-Brewery has been crafting and serving beer in the lower level of the Country Club since January. The Itasca Brewing Company is run by Mike Valente, a graduate of Western Carolina University, the Siebel Institute of Beer Technology in Chicago and Doemens Academy in Munich, Germany. He also learned much of the business while working at the Heinzelmannchen Nano-Brewery in Sylva, N.C. A native of Chicago’s Edgewater neighborhood, Valente gravitated to working in Itasca because of extended family that lived in the community and a love for its close-knit nature, he said. So once he had his international diploma in brewing, he put together a business plan and began scouting for brewery locations in and around Itasca. The Itasca Brewing Company opened earlier this year in the lower level of the Country Club, located at 400 E. Orchard St., Ste. B. Now that they are operating, the Itasca Country Club offers a restaurant, a brewery and tasting room and an upstairs catering facility for weddings and

other special events. “Our bar and tasting room (which holds about 55+ people comfortably) has 15 taps for 15 different flavors and those who want to consume it somewhere else can have it freshly poured into 32 ounce or 64 ounce growlers sealed on site for offsite consumption. We often do that for golfers heading onto the course and for those wanting to take one downtown on the train,” Valente said. Our business plan includes distribution of our wide variety of beers to the surrounding communities, he added. The Itasca Brewing Company is also working with couples who are planning weddings. Valente said he has a wedding package that will allow couples to collaborate with the brewery to create a special brew for their event. Beers offered regularly in the tasting room include a variety of Englishand German-style ales, IPAs, pale ales and rotating seasonal brews. In addition to craft beer, Itasca Brewing Company also makes a variety of hand crafted sodas, including Mike’s award-winning root beer. For current hours and upcoming events, check out the Itasca Brewing Company website at www.itascabrewingcompany.com.

 SOLBERG MANUFACTURING Solberg Manufacturing is one of the “elder statesmen” of Itasca industries. It moved to the community in 1977 – from the Evanston garage in which the company had been founded nine years before. Forty years later, Solberg has three facilities in Itasca and employs approximately 150 full-time employees in Itasca, and another 50 around the world, according to Patti Landreth, accounting and human resources manager. The firm is now run by the two sons of its founder, Charles Solberg, Sr. – Charles Jr. and Tor. Three grandchildren are also part of the company. Solberg Manufacturing makes and markets industrial air and gas filtration products and systems of varying sizes that are used on vacuum pumps, blowers, compressors, engines, turbines and many other types of

rotating equipment. They range in size and complexity from simple inlet filters for protecting shop compressors, to sophisticated filtration systems used in critical aerospace manufacturing processes. “Solberg has a very diverse customer base around the world, which use the products that are manufactured right here in Itasca,” Landreth said. “Our products can be found on equipment produced by General Electric, Siemens, Caterpillar, Ingersoll Rand and many, many others.” Solberg Manufacturing is certified B-Corp in Illinois which means that it strives to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency. “Among many of our commitments to employees, two that stand out are to ensure a safe working environment for everyone and to offer a living wage to all employees,” Landreth said. “We also engage in a number of charitable activities and events each year in support of the community including: The Alliance for the Great Lakes, Big Shoulders and American Cancer Society to name a few.” Solberg captured the community’s attention this year when it installed and held a ribbon-cutting for a huge solar panel roof on its facility at 1025 Hilltop Dr. That new roof provides 100 percent of the power needed for that facility and overages are regularly sold to the electrical grid.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

S

everal projects that have been in the works in Itasca ever since the recession ended are coming to fruition this year. The Residences at Hamilton Lakes, a 297-unit apartment complex spread between three four-story buildings along the west side of Arlington Heights Road near the Elk Grove Bank building, is now accepting renters, according to Nancy Hill, Itasca’s community development director. Nestled in a seven-acre park-like setting, this Hamilton Partners project offers luxury studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. There is also a resort-style clubhouse that features an outdoor pool, fitness center, cardio studio, spa area including a hot tub, sauna and steam room, theater, computer nook, conference room, pet spa and an indoor lounge opening to a three-season patio equipped with an outdoor kitchen and fireplace. “By building apartments within Hamilton Lakes, the goal is to create a more vibrant mix of uses there so that Hamilton Lakes can soon attract some entertainment and restaurant venues to that complex,” Hill said. “In fact, the village is working closely with Hamilton Partners in an effort to attract some new, exciting restaurants,” she added. In addition, the new five-story headquarters of the American Academy of Pediatrics is under construction on an 11-acre site within Hamilton Lakes. Hill said that she expects the Academy and its approximately 500 employees to move out of its long-established Elk Grove headquarters and into its much larger facility in Itasca sometime this fall. The new structure has been built to handle a maximum capacity of 650 employees, Hill said. “They wanted a new state-of-the-art building to reflect their philosophies about serving the medical needs of children,” she noted. “We also have several other exciting prospects looking at Hamilton Lakes,” Hill said. “If those come through, it would keep things busy in Hamilton Lakes for the next two years. But, even if those happen, we would still have about 50 additional acres available for development in Hamilton Lakes into the future.” Elsewhere in Itasca, R.S. Owens, a metal-plating and trophy-making

16

firm, is planning to consolidate two Chicago factories and one Indianapolis factory into a 150,000-square-foot facility on Norwood Avenue in Itasca before the end of 2017. R.S. Owens is a very high-end firm that even makes the trophies that we all see awarded during the annually-televised Emmy and Tony Awards. R.S. Owens is currently doing a major remodeling of the facility in Itasca’s Central Manufacturing District which previously housed a portion of the local Fellows Paper Shredders business. “Itasca is an attractive place for businesses to be because of DuPage County’s low taxes; the beautiful office spaces available; and the fact it is in a great location from which to service their customers,” Hill said. “Vacant office and industrial space in Itasca is filling up as businesses grow and consolidate here and also as many new businesses choose to leave Chicago and Cook County because it is so expensive to do business there,” she added.
