Village Walking Tour of Issaquah’s Living History Starting point is the Visitor Information Center/ Alexander House, 155 NW Gilman Blvd.

There you can pick up the brochure to take you through the historical highlights of Issaquah. The Visitor Information Center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekends. It is closed on holidays and some holiday weekends.

Gilman Town Hall Museum & Jail Built in 1888, as a public hall, it was purchased by the Town of Gilman, in 1898, to be used as a town hall. Today it is owned by the city and leased to the historical society for use as a museum. Next door is an old city jail built in 1914.

Train Depot The depot was completed in 1889. It was originally on the Seattle Lake Shore and Eastern line that ran from Seattle to Woodinville, south through Redmond, and east to North Bend. It was closed in 1958 and purchased by the city in 1984. 50 Rainier Blvd N. Issaquah Trolley In 2013, the Issaquah Historical Society was able to bring back the trolley, thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers. The trolley rides run May through September (weather dependent) on weekends. For more information: (425) 392-3500.

Salmon Hatchery The hatchery was constructed in 1936, as a Federal Works Progress Administration venture to restore the historic salmon runs. Today the hatchery raises mainly chinook and coho salmon. There are outdoor exhibits where visitors can learn about the salmon life cycle, as well as viewing windows and ladders for guests to enjoy.

Gilman Village Started in 1972, unwanted buildings in Issaquah were moved, renovated and combined into an attractive park-like retail setting. The village boasts more than 40 shops and restaurants. 317 NW Gilman Blvd.

Boehm’s Candies and Chocolates Boehm’s Candies chocolate factory, known worldwide for its award-winning confections, has attracted thousands of visitors annually to Issaquah since 1956. The manicured grounds are graced with fountains, a replica of a 12th-century alpine chapel near Saint Moritz Switzerland and the Edelweiss Swiss-style chalet, which was the home of founder Julius Boehm. Cougar Mountain Zoological Park Established in 1972, the primary focus of the zoo is on endangered and unique species, education and extending warm hospitality to their visitors.

THINGS TO SEE AND DO Village Theatre Based in Issaquah, Village Theatre is a leading producer of musical theater in the Pacific Northwest. Producing entertaining, quality productions since 1979, Village Theatre has grown into one of the region’s best-attended professional theaters, with over 20,000 subscribers. Through its Village Originals program, Village Theatre is nationally recognized for its contribution to the development of new musicals, having launched over 150 new works to date. Julius Boehm Pool Operated by the City of Issaquah, the pool is open to the public for lap swim, public swim and classes. Children in the fifth grade and under must be accompanied by a responsible parent or guardian while using the pool. Children under the age of 6 must be accompanied in the water by an adult. 50 E. Skate Park Open daily from 8 a.m. to dusk, the Skate Park provides skateboarders and rollerbladers recreation opportunities. The park is adjacent to and on the southeast side of the Issaquah Community Center and although it is unsupervised, safety rules are posted. 301 Rainier Blvd. South.

Paragliding and Hang Gliding – Poo Poo Point Located at the west end of Tiger Mountain, the point got its name from logging signals using a whistle that made a “poo poo” sound. The trailhead from the hang-glider area is the steeper of two routes to Poo Poo Point. The trail climbs steeply and steadily all the way to the top where you’ll find panoramic views of Squak Mountain, Lake Samammish and Issaquah. There is also a clearing on the back side of the point with an amazing view of Mount Rainier.

RECREATION PARKS/RECREATION/SPORTS/HIKING Issaquah is surrounded by 200 miles of hiking trails. Within minutes of downtown, hikers can leave behind urban stress for forest adventures on Cougar Mountain, Squak Mountain and Tiger Mountain.

On summer weekends, Paragliders can be seen launching themselves from Poo Poo into the atmosphere. Located at the west end of Tiger Mountain, the point got its name from logging signals using a whistle that made a “poo poo” sound. The trailhead from the hang-glider area is the steeper of two routes to Poo Poo point. The trail climbs steeply and steadily all the way to the top where you’ll find panoramic views of Squawk Mountain, Issaquah, and Lake Sammamish.

There is also a clearing on the back side of the point with an amazing view of Mount Rainier.

In addition to the magnificent hiking in our Issaquah Alps, there are many trails around the city, including the seasonal Edible Landscape Tour along Gilman Blvd. The art trail lined with sculptures and works of art, not only a wonderful easy walk it is beautiful, educational, and inspirational.

Lake Sammamish State Park is a 512-acre day-use park with 6,858-feet of spectacular waterfront on Lake Sammamish. The area around the lake was an important culture zone for local Native American tribes for centuries. This beautiful park provides deciduous forest and wetland vegetation for the enjoyment of visitors. A salmon-bearing creek flows along a raised all-access boardwalk. This natural setting supports a Great Blue Heron rookery. Bald Eagles and many other bird species make it a bird-watchers’ paradise.

Destination Playground. A new all-access playground was completed in 2016. This $1.1 million playground at Sunset Beach includes a zip line, swings, rotating net, multiple climbing

structures, mushroom house, coal mine, musical instruments, chess board and other adventures awaiting discovery.

Trails. The park includes 1.5 miles of hiking and biking trails from unpaved to paved and wooden.

Picnics. There are more than 800 picnic tables throughout the park, along with BBQ grills.

Beaches and boats. The park features two swimming areas, Sunset Beach and Tibbetts Beach, but no lifeguards. There is a bathhouse near each beach. Water activities include fishing, swimming, sunbathing, kayaking, paddle boarding. Kayak and SUP rentals are available in season. The park also features a public boat launch accessed off East Lake Sammamish Parkway.

Other activities. Horseshoe pits, softball fields, volleyball courts, wildlife viewing, birdwatching.

EVENTS SALMON DAYS In the heart of beautiful, downtown Issaquah lies the only urban salmon hatchery in the state of Washington.

Each autumn, the salmon return to spawn, bringing with them over 150,000 people who gather to welcome the salmon home during the annual Issaquah Salmon Days Festival.

Since its creation almost 50 years ago, Salmon Days has grown from a small-town event to a world class festival.

With over 450 colorful artisan booths, five music stages, a grand parade, Salmon BBQ, 5K run, carnival, Dock Dogs competitions, the Field of Fun, which is full of free games for young and old alike, and food from around the world, festival-goers celebrate not only the return of the salmon but much, much more.

Come for the fish, stay for the festivities. See why the Greater Issaquah Chamber of Commerce and the people of Issaquah are so proud of our Salmon celebration!

Historic Pub Crawl – (May and October) Take a walk through Issaquah and revisit some of the town’s wildest historic tales. Cocktails and appetizers will be served at each stop.

Pours In Stores – (June) Enjoy live music, beer, spirits, cider and wine tasting while meandering through the shops at the Grand Ridge Plaza in the Issaquah Highlands.

Fenders on Front Street – (Father’s Day) Vintage cars from all over the state will be parked along Front Street. There will also be live music and family activities.

Established in 1892, Issaquah now encompasses about 12.49 square miles and is home to 34,590 people.

Much of Issaquah’s growth has occurred since 1990, thanks to annexations and a housing boom led by construction in the Issaquah Highlands and Talus urban villages. Combined, these urban villages will include almost 5,000 housing units when building is complete.
