Mayor’s Update

The Village of Hoffman Estates celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2019. Since Hoffman Estates’ incorporation in September 1959, we have grown from a residential community of 8,000 to a socially, economically and culturally diverse community that is home to more than 53,000 residents.

As we continue to grow, the village is updating its Comprehensive Plan to guide future development. In 2019, planning efforts focused on the area north of the I-90 tollway in the western portion of the village, including the 59/90 Entertainment District and the area surrounding the Village Green. The focus in 2020 will be the area surrounding the recently completed four-way Interchange at Barrington Road and I-90. The full Comprehensive Plan will incorporate these “sub-area” plans to develop an inclusive vision for long-term growth.

Other key priorities for 2020 include public health and safety, sustainability, and continuing road and infrastructure improvements. 2020 also brings two milestones: the decennial U.S. Census in April, and the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote. The village is planning a variety of initiatives this year to encourage participation in the Census and to celebrate the centennial of women’s suffrage.

LIFESTYLE Residents in Hoffman Estates enjoy a great quality of life, with parks and forest preserves, quality schools, restaurants and a variety of entertainment close to home for all ages and interests. The village sponsors community events and festivals such as Northwest Fourthfest and Platzkonzert Germanfest, as well as monthly events for seniors, a summer concert series and youth programming.

Many village events take place at the Virginia Mary Hayter Village Green, named in honor of the village’s first female mayor.

In 2019, the Hideaway Brew Garden opened at the Village Green, featuring live music multiple times per week in the warmer months. In 2020, further upgrades are planned for the Village Green to ensure that it remains a popular gathering space for our community.

Next door to the Village Green, the village-owned Sears Centre Arena hosts nearly 100 events each year, including athletic competitions, monster trucks, and musical acts that draw a variety of audiences. The Arena is also the home of the Windy City Bulls, the Chicago Bulls’ NBA-G League affiliate, offering affordable, family-friendly entertainment.

ECONOMIC GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT Local economic growth remains strong.

The first stage of Somerset’s Bell Works “Metroburb” redevelopment of the former AT&T corporate campus started in 2019, with the entire project set to be completed over the next eight years. The 1.6 millionsquare-foot Bell Works will include a mix of office, retail, hotel, services and residential, including up to 550 apartments and townhome units.

“Bell Works will revitalize this area of Hoffman Estates by adding new and growing business tenants, community gathering spaces, and a significant number of jobs,” said Hoffman Estates Mayor Bill McLeod.

The village’s high-tech manufacturing area along the Golden Corridor of I-90 continues to grow, with the addition of Bystronic’s new 163,000-square-foot North American headquarters featuring office, manufacturing, warehouse and showroom space for their industrial products.

A number of other significant developments are also in the planning stages. On Lakewood Boulevard, the 53-acre Hoffman Technology Park could ultimately include up to 760,000 square feet of high-end office, warehouse and production space. A 15-acre piece of land adjacent to the Technology Park was recently rezoned to allow manufacturing, as demand remains high for clean, high-tech, build-tosuit industrial space.

Local businesses also continue to succeed and invest in our community. Ricky Rockets, Old Navy, Crank Revolution Bike Shop and Burnt Pizza opened in 2019. Meanwhile, existing businesses expanded or remodeled, including Aldi, Buona Beef, Poplar Creek Bowl and Country Inn & Suites. Growth is set to continue, with the Holiday Inn Express in Prairie Stone and other businesses opening in 2020.

As the home of the Sears corporate campus, Hoffman Estates continues to closely monitor the status of the Sears reorganization. The village is pleased that the Sears-owned buildings in the Prairie Stone Business Park remain occupied as part of the 2019 courtapproved asset sale, and we are working proactively to minimize any impacts to the Village and its residents.

Hoffman Estates offers residents a broad choice of attractive housing options.

Nearly 200 single-family home units are under construction or recently completed at Bergman Pointe and Amber Meadows. These new single-family home communities, as well as future residential developments like Bell Works, ensure that Hoffman Estates will continue to grow in the coming decades.

INFRASTRUCTURE The village continues to invest in its neighborhoods, with a $7.4 million street

program set for 2020 that includes resurfacing 33 street segments and fully reconstructing five roadways. This builds on the $6.5 million in street improvements completed in 2019. A mix of local, state and federal funds is used to increase the impact of these important projects.

Improvements continue underground as well. A number of significant water, sewer and drainage projects were completed in 2019, and over $1 million is budgeted for storm sewer improvements in 2020.

The village continues to coordinate with Pace and other regional partners to expand and promote the area’s transportation network, including Pace’s new I-90 express bus routes and On-Demand programs. We also continue to develop our network of bicycle paths, with paths along Central, Beverly and Shoe Factory roads set for construction or engineering in 2020.

HEALTH, SAFETY AND SUSTAINABILITY Providing superior public safety services to the community is a major focus for the village, as we hone our emergency response capacity and recruit the next generation of police officers and firefighter-paramedics.

The village’s Health and Human Services Department provides affordable physical and mental health services and was recently recognized with a prestigious 10-year accreditation from the American Psychological Association.

“We are extremely proud of the work that our village employees do to provide exceptional public safety and health services to our residents,” McLeod said.

In 2019, the village updated its Sustainability Plan, introduced a textile-recycling program, and was named a “SolSmart Bronze” community for its support of residential solar energy. The village will partner with Siemens in 2020 to replace all residential and commercial water meters, reducing water loss and improving customer service. All village-owned street lights will also be replaced with energy-efficient LEDs. “It’s important to invest in projects that increase efficiency, conserve resources and improve service to the community,” McLeod added.

UPDATES ON VILLAGE NEWS The village maintains its focus on public communication and transparency. The village website features a wealth of information about village services available in over 100 languages, while the monthly Citizen newsletter provides residents and businesses with news about village events and services. Everyone is also encouraged to follow the village on social media and to sign up to receive the village’s weekly “eNews” email to stay up to date on village happenings.

Celebration of Excellence Awards Six outstanding members of the Hoffman Estates Chamber of Commerce & Industry were honored in late January for their exemplary community involvement and Chamber support during 2019 at the ninth annual Celebration of Excellence Awards dinner, held at the Chicago Marriott Northwest.

The honorees represented a wide variety of businesses and nonprofit/educational entities.

BUSINESS OF THE YEAR Divine Signs & Graphics, owned by Jeff and Michele Miller, was named Business of the Year. They edged out Main Event Entertainment, Andigo Credit Union and Red Roof Inn Plus for the honor. The Millers started the signs and graphics business in 2003 after Jeff grew tired of traveling the world selling computer systems. He jumped at the opportunity to transition out of that life and start up a sign company.

Today he makes and sells both interior and exterior signs for businesses across North America, employing 17 people.

Miller joined the Chamber around 2010 and takes pleasure in supplying any and all signs the organization needs. He spent time serving on the Chamber board and is a de facto member of all of the different event committees since he readily offers free signs to all.

“It was certainly a special privilege to be honored in this way by the Chamber,” Miller said of the Business of the Year recognition.

SMALL BUSINESS OF THE YEAR Minuteman Press of Hoffman Estates earned the Small Business of the Year honor. Co-owner Juli Langelund accepted the award.

She and her mother have co-owned the Hoffman Estates Minuteman Press for the past five years and have been Chamber members virtually that entire time. They are a part of the Exchange Networking Group and while Juli serves on the Chamber’s membership and golf outing committees, her cousin, Danielle Gleason, is a member of the legislative committee. Minuteman Press Hoffman Estates is a full-service commercial printer. They both design and print custom materials including business cards, flyers, programs, brochures, envelopes and spiral-bound books in both small and large quantities.

Other nominees for the honor were Loyal2Community, Blink Tees, Higgins Automotive and Wholesome Health Pharmacy.

PUBLIC SECTOR/NON-PROFIT PARTNER OF THE YEAR Northern Illinois University – Hoffman Estates campus earned recognition as the Public Sector/Non-Profit Partner of the Year. The university has had a campus and conference center in Hoffman Estates for approximately 25 years that offers academic programs, including a one-year MBA program, a variety of meeting spaces and a new Esports Lounge, said Martha Keyes, Conference Services Manager.

Keyes works to make NIU as engaged as possible with the Chamber and the entire community, offering space for Chamber events like the Holiday Lunch and New Member Breakfasts within their full-service, technology-loaded conference center.

Others competing in that category were the Township of Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates Police Department, Rotary Club of Schaumburg-Hoffman Estates, St. Hubert’s Job & Network Ministry and the Village of Hoffman Estates Transportation and Engineering Department.

SPLASH AWARD Signature Transportation Group, a full-service ground transportation company, based in Arlington Heights, with sedan/SUV “black car” service, as well as a fleet of larger vehicles including executive buses and motor coaches, received the Splash Award for the new business that best shows enthusiasm and support for the Chamber during its first year as a member. In business for six years, Signature chose to join the Hoffman Estates Chamber in early 2019, wanting to branch out and make additional business connections, said Joe Jung, Business Development Manager. Since joining, Jung has joined the Solution Networking Group, attended numerous Business After Hours and other signature events and has served on the golf outing committee.

“I have been working hard to build relationships and get to know people so that when they hear that someone is looking for transportation for a group or event, they will refer them to me,” Jung said.

Additional nominees for the Splash Award were Allstate-Sundara Insurance Group LLC, Hideaway Brew Garden & Bar and Lake County Physical Therapy LLC.

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR Patti Smolin, Business Liaison Librarian for the Schaumburg Township District Library, was honored as the Volunteer of the Year. Smolin has heavily involved herself in the Chamber since joining the library in late 2013. She leads the annual Tools for Success school supplies drive, is an active member of the Women Engaged in Business networking group and she regularly attends Chamber gatherings where she reaches out to offer business information-related assistance to fellow members. She often taps Chamber members to speak on business-related topics at the library, all in efforts to educate patrons and boost local business and economic growth.

Smolin works in conjunction with library colleagues including John Ericson, Manager of the Hoffman Estates branch of the Schaumburg Township District Library and 2020 Chairman of the Hoffman Estates Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, on these efforts.

“In order to successfully conduct the business outreach I do, I need the support of the library’s senior leaders and other members of the library staff,” Smolin said.

Others competing for this award were Bill Hickey of Travelex International, Steve Long of Blink Tees and Keith Evans of Key Financial Insurance Agency, Inc.

CHAIRMAN’S AWARD AMITA Health earned the Chairman’s Award which is presented to the business that best promotes the mission of the Chamber through participation and sponsorship. It was accepted by Roxanne Parikh, Physicians Relations Manager and a new member of the Chamber Board of Directors. AMITA Health and AMITA St. Alexius Medical Center have long been trusted members and resources of the Hoffman Estates Chamber of Commerce & Industry and they regularly sponsor and host Chamber events. This spring, for instance, they hosted a Government Relations Committee meeting with Cook County Commissioner Kevin B. Morrison. The hospital also hosts the Chamber’s annual Illinois State Legislative Luncheon in the fall with our elected officials.

“We were so excited and humbled by the recognition of the Chairman’s Award,” Parikh said.

“Receiving an award like this invokes a sense of pride that we have been able to be of service to the community while also being committed to taking care of their health. It is heartwarming to walk into Chamber

events, see so many familiar faces and know we are among friends and trusted partners in the community.”

Hoffman Estates has earned a feather in its cap, so to speak, for how quickly and successfully it facilitated the redevelopment of the former 150-acre AT&T campus along I-90. The tech giant opted to leave their headquarter site in the fall of 2016, and less than four years later, the village, with New Jersey-based Somerset Development, has a new plan in place on an exciting new venture.

SECOND METROBURB IS COMING TO THE SECOND CITY Somerset is in the process of redeveloping the 1.6 million square feet of office space, distributed between three buildings built in the early 1990s, and the surrounding property into what it calls Bell Works Chicagoland, a “Metroburb.” When finished, it will feature office and co-working space, as well as retail and service businesses open to the general public within the main building, a conference center, public gathering spaces and a full fitness experience. Eventually, they will also be surrounded by residences (townhouses and apartments) and a hotel, according to Kevin Kramer, director of economic development for the Village of Hoffman Estates.

Somerset successfully transformed a two million square foot Bell Labs facility in Holmdel, New Jersey into a “Metroburb” called Bell Works. A Metroburb is that slice of urbanity in a great suburban location.

“We didn’t want to see the AT&T buildings demolished, so we sought out an experienced developer with creativity and capital to help repurpose this large corporate campus.”

Kramer said. “We are very excited about the project, so we have devoted valuable time and energy to it.”

Several years ago, “Somerset came up with the idea of converting massive corporate campuses into Metroburbs, which allow

firms to rent office space above retail spaces like grocery stores, coffee shops, food halls, restaurants, hair salons, day care, doggy day care and libraries. The concept allows corporate employees in the suburbs to enjoy the convenience of working in an urban environment, but with everything under one roof,” Kramer said.

“The first floor of their project is open to the general public and its atriums are used to hold business expos, farmers markets, film festivals, dance class, school competitions, and more,” he added. The concept plan at the Hoffman Estates project calls for 1.2 million square feet of offices, 60,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, and 80,000 square feet of conference space within the existing buildings.

“We feel that this project will be a gamechanger for not just Hoffman Estates, but the northwest suburbs as a whole” he added.

Currently, Somerset is remodeling and transforming the buildings. Public spaces, like a coffee shop and market on the first floors of the buildings, are being constructed and the spaces on the second and third floors are being transformed into “ready to wear” offices of a wide variety of sizes with co-working lab spaces.

In addition, the former AT&T cafeteria on the third floor, which features an expanse of windows and skylights, will become an event space available for meetings and lifetime celebrations like weddings or galas, Kramer said.

“It’s fantastic to watch the space opening up and glass walls being installed to offer privacy, security, and, most importantly, that open, inclusive feel,” he added. “Somerset plans to activate spaces in this unique project this summer when prospective tenants will be able to see and experience what is being offered instead of just imagining it.”

Making a major change like this to a massive office complex in only four years is an incredible feat, Kramer said.

INDUSTRIAL COMPLEMENTS The redevelopment of the former AT&T property also led to another development group to plan a technology park across Lakewood Boulevard to the north of Bell Works. They plan to take 53 acres of vacant farmland and transform it into a high-end technology park for office, warehouse and production space.

“It will have a high-end look with deep setbacks, beautiful landscaping, and offer speculative industrial and warehouse spaces which can be used by many different types of businesses,” he said. “There will be ponds and walking trails throughout, connecting to trails across the street in the Metroburb.”

“We are trying to bring the various corporate and industrial uses together, so potentially, firms could have offices in Bell Works and their warehouse facility across the street with both having easy access to the interstate and O’Hare. We expect they will begin construction later this year on the project,” Kramer added.

MIXING IT UP Elsewhere in the village, a 121-room Holiday Inn Express, the ninth hotel in Hoffman Estates, is under construction next to Cabela’s and is due to open in summer 2020. Additionally, the village has created a new TIF district on the north side of the intersection of Higgins Road and Old Sutton Road in order to encourage commercial development in the area.

“It is also worth noting that Hoffman Estates still has approximately 1,000 acres of open land available for development, with parcels ranging in size from 2 acres to 185 acres, not including our re-development sites. This is unique as Hoffman Estates is the closest community to O’Hare with that much land still available for development,” Kramer said.

“Currently, we are looking for mixed-use developers to develop projects next to the Sears Centre Arena and in other key areas of the village,” he noted, to create pockets of density and enhance the growth and investment already made in the village.

Finally, in order to encourage small to midsize businesses within Hoffman Estates to grow to the next level, the village has teamed up with four neighborhood communities to start a business accelerator program called

Next Level Northwest, a charitable non-profit public/private partnership for the education and development of leaders associated with established Stage 2 businesses within the municipalities in the partnership.

Companies at least 3 years old with “coachable” owners and at least $250,000 in annual sales are being recruited to be a part of a specialized one-on-one coaching program which is free to them.

“It is tough to attract new businesses to a community, so we have decided to grow from within – from the businesses that are already established in our communities and have their

roots here,” Kramer said. “We are aiming this program at businesses within our communities that are primed for further growth. We want to help them get over the plateau that they may have hit and give them an actionable threeto-five-year growth plan.” The first Hoffman Estates business to complete the program was Blink Tees and they have given it rave reviews.

“There’s a hunger in the suburbs for more than just the typical suburban office park.

People want that vibrant, great place to work.

Bell Works, Hoffman Technology Park and other great projects can satisfy that hunger right now in Hoffman Estates,” Kramer said.

AMITA St. Alexius Medical Center and the Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital continue to tend to the mental and physical health of northwest suburban residents.

Polly Davenport took over as the new CEO of St. Alexius last September. A native of Texas, Davenport has spent more than 30 years in health care, working her way up in faith-based hospitals in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas.

“I am attracted to hospitals health systems with the mission to deliver services to those with the greatest need,” she said. “Here at St. Alexius we will further advance and develop women’s and children’s care, as well as acute care services for all residents,” Davenport said.

“Our goal is to expand our pediatric specialties so that parents don’t need to travel into the city to find care for their children’s specialized needs.”

In addition, “plans are underway to renovate our emergency department which will improve the pediatric care experience and shorten our wait times,” Davenport said “We are proud of our high-quality physicians and clinicians and want to create an optimal care environment. In addition, our newlycreated AMITA Health Center for Advanced Joint Replacement allows patients a high-

quality and streamlined experience for total joint procedures. We are proud of our rich tradition and many national accolades, and we want local people to feel that this is THEIR hospital,” she added.

The 141-bed Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital on the same campus is currently doing the third addition of its 18-year history. They are constructing a new 15,000-square-foot, $6 million, three-level ambulatory care services wing which will include a day hospital, an intensive outpatient therapy area and space for physician visits.

“We are currently experiencing between 250 and 300 visits per day and are simply out of space,” said Clay Ciha, President/CEO. “So we are constructing additional group and individual therapy rooms, a demonstration kitchen for those with eating disorders and space for doctors to meet with patients.”

A Dec. 8, 2020, grand opening is anticipated.

“We are wildly excited because we have been working closely with the AMITA Foundation for five years to raise the necessary funds,” Ciha added.

Education The ways in which schools are administered and critical life lessons are taught within them are constantly evolving. Hoffman Estates schools at all grade levels are living, breathing entities that work within many of the same buildings they inhabited decades ago, but that is where the similarities often end. The way in which students are taught within those buildings is dynamic and ever-changing.

High School District 211 will soon be led by a new superintendent. Dr. Lisa A. Small was confirmed last fall and this summer she will take over leadership of the District from retiring Superintendent Daniel E. Cates.

Dr. Small currently serves the District as associate superintendent for instruction, but she has been part of the District since she came to Hoffman Estates High School in 1992 as a science and mathematics teacher.

Over the years she has added several degrees to her curriculum vitae, culminating in a doctorate of education in curriculum and instruction from Loyola University Chicago, and she has served in increasingly high level positions at District 211, including six years as principal of William Fremd High School.

In her current associate superintendent position she has led the district’s instructional team and has worked to increase advanced placement, dual credit and career pathways course offerings, as well as to implement the District’s new wellness program.

“I look forward to continuing to move

forward in areas begun by Dr. Cates, particularly career exploration and discerning college majors so that our students are ready for their next steps,” she explained. “At this point in their lives they should be engaged in exploration, not decision-making, and we hope to help them better access information that will help them choose appropriate courses.”

“We also plan to work with local Chambers and companies to place our teachers in summer, weekend or break-time externships which will allow them to experience the work their students may one day be doing and can make their classrooms continue to be enhanced with real life experiences.”

Dr. Small added that she also plans to offer their faculties and support staff members top-notch professional development experiences.

Meanwhile, at School District 54 which administers elementary and middle school education for children in Hoffman Estates and is in the top two percent

of school districts in the nation academically, Superintendent Andy DuRoss and his staff are working their way through their multi-year “54 Promise” Strategic Plan. They are currently concentrating on increasing their focus on a “whole child” approach to not only students’ academic learning, but also their social and emotional success, DuRoss explained.

Using the theme “Everyone Needs a Champion,” District 54 educators are concentrating on getting to know each student deeply and developing in students the skills that will make them successful throughout their lives when it comes to self-regulation, empathy for others and social interaction.

In order to do this successfully, they are using the principles of positive psychology and resilience, developed by Shawn Achor, a former Harvard University professor.

District 54 is also working with families, through programs such as its Parent University. Families are invited to monthly session about some aspect of the District 54 Promise. Junior high student ambassadors, for instance, spoke to District 54 families in March about how to increase their happiness in a busy world. Student ambassadors at every school work with their peers and younger children to promote happiness and positivity.

Recreation Facilities need constant maintenance and updating, whether they are offices, homes, recreational destinations or even parks. You cannot just establish a destination or facility and then ignore it.

The Hoffman Estates Park District keeps a constant eye on its various parks and facilities, enhancing and updating them regularly using its own funds, and applying for grants whenever possible.

This year the park district has invested in renovating the 20-year-old “Club at Prairie Stone” fitness facility for those age 16 and over. The updated portion of the facility will celebrate its grand opening on May 16, said Katie Burgess, communications and marketing manager.

Two of the facility’s original three tennis courts have been replaced with a large, functional fitness and strength area containing over 100 plate-loaded machines. They also have over 100 cardio machines, including high-intensity unpowered machines, as well as low impact equipment like ellipticals, inclined treadmills and exercise cycles.

They have also added a 100-footlong performance turf and HIIT training zones into the new space.

Meanwhile, Southridge Park and Birch Park will both be the beneficiaries of Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development grants from the state. This state-financed grant program provides funding assistance to local government agencies for acquisition and/or development

of land for public parks and open space.

“We try to update each park every 20 years or so and earning these grants will allow us to upgrade that updating,” Burgess said.

The $400,000 grant for Southridge Park will allow the district to add a three-part, 4,000-square-foot spray pad for both children and adults, a mile of new paved walking trails, a large fitness park for those 12 and over, a party shelter and a kayak launch at the lake. All of the new facilities will be ADA-accessible.

At Birch Park, the district will add walking trails and put in a playground, a shelter for public gatherings, a multi-sport court, passive park areas, a soccer field and a Butterfly Bio swale.

Finally, last summer the park district partnered with the National Fitness Campaign to add a fitness court at Fabbrini Park, in an effort to make world-class fitness free and accessible in beautiful public spaces. The Fitness Court – the first of its kind in the Chicago area - is an outdoor, totally stationery body weight circuit training gym (including pull-up bars and inclines) that supports all level of workouts that can be completed in as little as seven minutes a day.

The new Fitness Court is suitable for adults of all fitness abilities and

free to use. With the free Fitness Court app, available for both iOS and Android, users can take classes, learn workout routines and get fit.

The new Fitness Court is conveniently located adjacent to a running/ walking trail and soon-to-be expanded outdoor pickle ball courts. There will be 10 courts when finished. In 2019 the District hosted the Prairie State Pickleball Senior Games and hope to host again, Burgess said.

BON APPÉTIT FOOD & DRINK FESTIVAL | APRIL The ninth annual food & drink festival was postponed and is in the process of being rescheduled. This exciting event showcases restaurants and food/liquor providers from around the area offering samplings of their unique cuisine and liquors. In addition, culinary students from Harper College are challenged by Tate & Lyle, the manufacturers of Splenda sweetener, to bake the perfect cupcake using Splenda instead of sugar. Attendees participate in the judging as each student prepares mini-cupcakes to taste and then everyone casts votes for the best at the festival. Tate & Lyle generously awards scholarship money to each winning team of students.

COMMUNITY FISHING DERBY | JUNE This catch-and-release derby will be held on Saturday, June 20, on Illinois’ Free Fishing Day when no one needs a fishing license to enjoy angling. The Community Fishing Derby annually attracts over 500 registered fishing sports enthusiasts of all ages.

Prizes are offered for the longest fish caught by registered attendees in four different age groups. The lake is stocked with tagged fish, sponsored by local businesses, and the lucky winners receive cash prizes!

This is truly a community event with our local Boy Scout Troop #290 selling bait, police and fire departments’ demonstrations and HEPCAAA selling hot dogs to benefit the police and fire departments’ community programs. STATE LEGISLATIVE LUNCHEON I SEPTEMBER Each fall the Hoffman Estates Chamber of Commerce & Industry's Government Relations Committee holds it's annual Illinois State Legislative Luncheon. NORTHWEST CELTIC FEST | OCTOBER Celtic Fest is a free indoor family-friendly event held Oct. 3 at the Sears Centre Arena.

This regional fest features Celtic musicians and dancers, a craft beer celebration, and authentic Celtic treats and family-favorite foods, plus a large Celtic Marketplace with area vendors selling unique cultural wares and several activities for kids. FRIENDSHIP TREE LIGHTING | NOVEMBER Usher in the winter holiday season with the annual Friendship Tree ceremony at Hoffman Estates Village Hall, 1900 Hassell Rd. Held annually the Saturday before Thanksgiving, the event attracts hundreds to enjoy the lighting of the huge evergreen tree in front of village hall. The tree is festooned with red bows so that its majesty can be enjoyed during the daylight hours, as well as at night. This free event, organized by the village’s Celebrations Commission, features entertainment, refreshments and a special visitor for the children.
