he Hobe Sound Chamber of Commerce plays a significant role in the local business community. The Chamber is an organization financed entirely by member investments. It provides opportunities for members to stay connected, network, advertise, receive continuing education, receive business support and give back to their community. The Chamber is governed by a Board of Directors who guides the policy making responsibilities. The small staff of four people facilitates daily operations and activities. The Hobe Sound Chamber is lucky enough to have the support of dedicated volunteers who assist by helping to coordinate events, acting as receptionists and managing the lobby visitor center. The Hobe Sound chamber would not exist as it does today without the devoted commitment of its volunteers.

The Hobe Sound Chamber is proud to provide hundreds of thousands of referrals a year, driving business to our members and, in turn, making membership investment priceless. Our lobby visitor center is open Monday through Friday and displays several brochures, pamphlets and coupons that help residents and visitors alike as they plan vacations, family activities or learn about local businesses that can meet their everyday needs.

The Hobe Sound Christmas Parade and Hobe Sound Festival of the Arts are our signature special events which contribute greatly to the local economy. These events not only draw an influx of visitors to the area giving an increased amount of exposure to businesses; they encourage commerce, showcase the special smalltown charm of Hobe Sound and build a sense of pride among patrons. Visitors along with residents experience, firsthand, how special Hobe Sound truly is. In addition, the Chamber hosts a Golf Tournament in May and a Progressive Dinner Party in October. These events provide entertainment opportunities for chamber and community members. Each month the Chamber organizes a number of networking functions for members, giving them the opportunity to make new connections and learn about local issues affecting business. These events have proven to be quite effective for making key business contacts and for leadership development. There are numerous opportunities for members to serve on committees, including Ambassadors, business development, education, membership, event planning and nominating committees. The Hobe Sound Chamber also publishes a quarterly printed newspaper and a weekly e-newsletter keeping the community informed about Chamber and community events and news. Widely distributed in the area, The Pelican newspaper provides affordable advertising opportunities to its members. Whether you are a resident or visitor, you will find that the Hobe Sound Chamber is a great resource for you. Small businesses are encouraged in Hobe Sound. According to the Business Development Board of Martin County, establishments with only one to four employees make up two-thirds of the total businesses in Martin County, and approximately an additional one-fourth is made up of fewer than 20 employees. REDEVELOPMENT AREA

Plans to enhance Bridge Road between US-1 and Dixie Highway officially began in 2000 with the establishment of the Hobe Sound Redevelopment Plan. Precursor goals for the corridor were identified as early as 1994. Bridge Road was highlighted as the #1 focus area in the 2010 NOW Visioning community report. The vision for Bridge Road is that of a sustainable neighborhood “Main Street” setting that will support a vibrant downtown for all. Objectives of the Bridge Road project include increasing the amount of on-street parking, improving vehicular and pedestrian safety, undergrounding overhead utilities, improving drainage, reducing speeds, and promoting walkability through sidewalk additions and landscape enhancements. County staff has worked closely with the Hobe Sound Neighborhood Advisory Committee (NAC) and the community on the corridor design since early 2011. Participation by the NAC, residents,

business owners and property owners ensures the design will meet the individual needs of each business along the corridor and align with the vision as outlined in the Hobe Sound Redevelopment Plan. Engineering drawings are currently being drafted, accounting for the needs of the property owners and businesses along Bridge Road. The Martin County Board of County Commissioners have approved the acceptance of any right of way needed to complete the project. Staff is coordinating with property owners and Martin County’s Property Management department to accept additional right of way needed to make the project a reality. In April 2014, the Martin County Board of County Commissioners approved $2.2 Million in Tax Increment Financing (TIF) for the design and construction of this project in the CRA’s Five-year Capital Improvement Plan (CIP). The construction of the project is expected to start by early summer 2015 and be finished by the end of 2019. obe Sound welcomes new residents and visitors to its lovely smalltown community. From top-rated schools to world famous golf courses and pristine beaches, Hobe Sound provides the quality of life that is appealing to all age groups from all walks of life. Hobe Sound beach was recently named the “safest, most affordable” beach in the nation. Hobe Sound had its beginnings in recorded history in 1696 when a British ship from Jamaica on its way to Philadelphia sank north of Jupiter Inlet close to shore. Jonathan Dickinson was among the 25 passengers and crew who were greeted by the Tekestas (from which neighboring village, Tequesta, got its name) and the Jove Indians, whose name the Spanish pronounced “Ho-bay” gave Hobe (rhymes with robe) Sound its name. Dickinson kept a diary of their adventure which has been published.

With its canopies of ficus trees, one-of-akind antique shops, eclectic art galleries, and the Hobe Sound Mural project, a public art venture led by local artists, Hobe Sound is a destination noted for beauty, relaxation and unique shopping. Hobe Sound boasts amazing restaurants that appeal to all types of appetites from extraordinary fine dining to fun local hangouts. The small-town feel surrounded by the beauty of nature, carefully planned communities and convenient location as the gateway linking Palm Beach to the Treasure Coast, Hobe Sound remains to this day “The town that IS what Florida WAS.” e

In the 1920s Hobe Sound was renamed “Picture City” when the Olympia Improvement Corporation tried to create a town in Greek style where motion pictures would be produced. Today many streets still bear the names relating to the Greek theme. A few cement lamp posts from that era still stand along Dixie Highway. After the devastating hurricane in 1928 the project was abandoned and the original name was restored.

What makes Hobe Sound so unique is that it is surrounded by the natural beauty of Jonathan Dickinson State Park to the west, Blowing Rocks Preserve to the south and the National Wildlife Refuge and Jupiter Island neighboring to the east. Just north is the remainder of Martin County and the magnificent Treasure Coast. Within a few miles of downtown, one can jump onto I-95 and reach metropolitan cities such as West Palm Beach to the south, in just a matter of minutes.

The Martin County School District’s competitive academic achievements, industry-driven Career Academy curriculum, and outstanding cultural arts and athletic programs are among Florida’s best. The District is consistently ranked among the state’s top performing school districts, and is officially recognized as an Academically High-Performing District in Florida. The District is also fully accredited by AdvancED, the parent organization of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement. Our town’s youngest students can start off on the right foot at the Hobe Sound Early Learning Center, a private, nonprofit school that helps students from one to five years old develop social and emotional

skills as well as kindergarten readiness skills like reading, math, and art. The HSELC has a rich history, and just recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. From there, students will work up through the elementary, middle and high schools. There are private and public options at each level so that parents and students can ensure the right fit. Public schools include Hobe Sound and Seawind Elementary Schools, Murray Middle School and South Fork High School. Private schools include Hobe Sound Christian Academy, The Pine School, St. Joseph Catholic Elementary and Good Shepard Episcopal School. Many of the schools offer signature programs that provide unique opportunities and experiences to students. Hobe Sound Elementary was the first school in the U.S. to be certified as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, giving students the chance to work with environmental programs. It has also been recognized as a “Green School” by Florida Atlantic University’s Pine Jog Environmental Education Center for its holistic and innovative approach to going

Martin County is one such organization that provides tremendous support to the District, its teachers, and students. The Education Foundation of Martin County is a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3), community investment organization that enriches and enhances educational opportunities for students and teachers in the school district and has been supporting excellence in education for over 20 years. Its mission at work includes classroom enrichment grants, the Fund-A-Project program, and Adopt-a-Class program. Murray Middle School offers a technology career academy that prepares students for a high school level program as well.

n 2013, Martin County, which houses Hobe Sound, climbed from the number five position to the number two position in the County Health Rankings study which compares counties, based on a number of variables, to determine overall health. In keeping with the county’s high health standard, residents of Hobe Sound will find health care is readily available in many of their neighboring communities; each located a very short distance from Hobe Sound. Nearest is Jupiter Medical Center, which was established in 1979. Jupiter Medical Center is a not-for-profit 283-bed regional

medical center consisting of 163 private acute care hospital beds and 120 longterm care, sub-acute rehabilitation and Hospice beds, and provides a broad range of services with specialty concentrations in oncology, imaging, orthopedics & spine, digestive health, emergency services, lung & thoracic, women’s health, weight management and men’s health. Hobe Sound residents can also utilize the Martin Health System which is based in Stuart, but has numerous hospitals, MediCenters, emergency centers and outpatient centers located in the nearby communities, including a MediCenter right in Hobe Sound. The not-for-profit, community-based Health System houses a combined 344 beds, and employs almost 400 doctors. Martin Health System has also received many awards including a spot on the Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals list for seven years running. Outside of these medical centers, there are also dentists, chiropractors, physicians and more located in and around Hobe Sound. e

obe Sound is home to numerous artists and art galleries. Art-lovers can view exhibits and galleries with: Hobe Sound Fine Arts League; Lighthouse Center for the Arts; Hobe Sound Art Gallery; Jupiter Island Arts Council & Town Hall; or The Framery. Many of these locations also offer classes, workshops, summer camps, sidewalk sales and art fairs.

Even outside of these galleries, there is plenty of stunning visual art to take in. In 2009, local artist Nadia Utto began the Hobe Sound Mural Project. The project’s goal is to create an outdoor gallery of beautiful walls, honoring past history, present vitality and future promise. With the help of 32 local artists, there are now 15 murals, with plans to continue adding more. They are located throughout the town on the outside walls of various buildings in Banner Lake Park and along U.S. Highway One, Bridge Road and Dixie Highway. The murals depict gorgeous

sunrises, kooky underwater seascapes, beach scenes, themes of recycling and more. Visitors can tour the murals on foot, by bike or by driving tour. There is a wide variety of performance art available for those looking to take in a show. Locally, guests can visit the Maltz Jupiter Theatre in Jupiter or the Barn and Lyric Theatres in Stuart. About 30 minutes to the south in West Palm Beach; visitors can take in a concert, show or play at the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts or Cruzan Amphitheatre. Museums in and around Hobe Sound provide a vast array of history, science exhibits, memorabilia, and cultural experiences. Locally, visitors should visit the first, one room school house to service Hobe Sound; the Apollo School located in the historic Zeus Park neighborhood. For families with young children, the Children’s Museum of the Treasure Coast, with its many interactive exhibits and hands-on activities, is a must. For a slice of Americana, check out the Elliot Museum. The Historical Society of Martin County, which contains local archives and artifacts, is also housed at the Elliot Museum. More local history can be experienced at the House of Refuge, the oldest building in Martin County, where shipwreck victims could once find safety, or in Historic Downtown Stuart. e

Hobe Sound Festival of the Arts

Boating

The Festival of the Arts occurs each year the first weekend in February, Saturday and Sunday, and is free to the public. Festival goers will enjoy jewelers, painters, potters, glassmakers, a kids zone, a local green market and much more. Each year the Hobe Sound Chamber of Commerce partners with Howard Alan Events to bring the Festival of the Arts to the Hobe Sound Community. This spectacular show allows local artists as well as world renowned artists to enhance the community by showing and selling their sculptures, photography, paintings and more.

There’s certainly no shortage of waterways in Hobe Sound, which means there is no shortage of boating or fishing either. The Manatee Queen boat tour offers visitors a tour of Jupiter Island and special glimpses of the majestic and endangered manatee. Jonathan Dickinson State Park offers boating adventures like kayaking, canoeing, power boating or a guided boat tour. The boat ramp and boat trailer parking available at Jimmy Graham Boat Ramp Park make it a great place to take off into the water. Or, boaters can visit the St. Lucie Inlet Preserve State Park which is only accessible by boat or a long walk.

For those who would rather watch, Jupiter houses the Roger Dean Stadium which is the spring training facility used by both the Florida Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals. Fishing enthusiasts can enjoy both offshore and intracoastal fishing opportunities in Hobe Sound. Lake Okeechobee is a popular destination for fishers looking to catch bass, bluegills or catfish, and salt water fishing and even lobster hunting are available on the coast. Private recreation options such as Boat Tours on the Manatee Queen and fishing expeditions with Dog House Fishing Charters are also available. Jonathan Dickinson State Park Jonathan Dickinson State Park provides 11,500 acres of wildlife to explore. The land was used as a top-secret radar training school in WWII before it was made a state park in 1950. Today, visitors to the state park enjoy boating, fishing, birdwatching, camping, hiking, horseback riding, kayaking, bicycling, and other outdoor adventures. Be on the lookout for local, native animals including deer, foxes, otter, alligators and even bald eagles. Guests can also take a tour boat ride down the Loxahatchee River, and make a stop at the old home of “Wildman of the Loxahatchee,” Trapper Nelson. Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge

Established in 1969, the Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge aims to maintain and restore the precious natural habitats that can be found in this 1,000-acre area. The refuge consists of 300 acres of rare sand pinescrub forest and 735 acres of coastal dune and mangrove swamp. The area is also home to some of the most active sea turtle nesting on the Florida coast. Wildlife lovers can enjoy hiking, fishing, observation platforms, nature photography, public beaches and an interpretive museum. Hobe Sound Nature Center The Hobe Sound Nature Center is located within the National Wildlife Refuge. The Center began in 1973 as a resource to

Hobe Sound Public Beach Hobe Sound Public Beach provides about 300 feet of sand and surf where beachgoers can swim, surf, picnic and relax in the sun. Lifeguards, restrooms and picnic tables are provided at this idyllic beach which is located right next to the Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge. Parks Hobe Sound has no shortage of parks for children and adults alike. For sports fans, J.V. Reed Park is the place to go with its baseball and soccer fields and tennis, basketball and racquetball courts. For those who love to fish, the dock at Greenfield Park is a local favorite fishing spot. Zeus Park, Hobe Sound’s Greek-style town center from the 1920s, offers a playground and a butterfly garden. And there are even more parks to be found scattered throughout the area; with a little bit of exploring, everyone is sure to discover their favorite one.
