Water lovers enjoy power and pleasure boating, kayaking, wakeboarding, swimming, paddle boarding, windsurfing and fishing along the shores of the Umatilla and Columbia Rivers. Golfing, fishing and hiking are all popular activities in the area. Miles and miles of fun, the Columbia River is the fourth-largest river in the United States at 1,243 miles in length. Letting the outdoors work its magic on you is priceless. Riverfront trails and paths stretch for more than 20 miles along the Columbia River. Cross over the Columbia River via the pedestrian path that will take you over the border into Washington State. All these paths have breath taking vistas of the Columbia River. There are no excuses get out there and enjoy what nature has to offer in sunny Eastern Oregon.

Trails offer a wide range of riding challenges, all of which will keep your heart rate up. Several of the trails offer flat terrain with some twists and turns making it a fun ride for every age and skill level. All of the trails offer breathtaking views and are well worth the effort of getting out there. You can always stop and walk; we won’t tell anyone. Enjoy!

ENTERTAINMENT, Two symphonies; one Eastern Oregon EASTERN OREGON IS HOME TO BOTH THE OREGON EAST SYMPHONY AND INLAND NORTHWEST MUSICIANS. Established in 1986, the Oregon East Symphony’s mission is to “operate, support and maintain a symphony orchestra, ensembles, chorale and youth classical music program in order to enhance the cultural wealth of the region through education and performance.” In order to meet its mission, the symphony and its volunteer board of directors provides two streams of programming: 1. An annual concert series programed by the symphony’s musical
director Dr. Beau Benson, featuring local musicians performing large-scale symphonic pieces, chorale works, debut performances of works by local composers, collaborations with pop groups and multimedia presentations.
2. Playing For Keeps, a K-12 classical music education program with
the goal of transforming beginning musicians into contributing members of the symphony through a series of activities for various ages and skill levels.

Located in Hermiston and celebrating 19 years, Inland Northwest Musicians ensembles have performed over 300 concerts in more than 40 different communities in Eastern Oregon and Southeast Washington. Inland Northwest Musicians operates four performing ensembles: • Inland Northwest Orchestra – a full symphony orchestra of
approximately 50 members, with rehearsals held in Pendleton.

The Hermiston School District is the largest district in Eastern Oregon. It serves over 5,600 students, and continues to experience steady enrollment growth. The school district has five K-5 elementary schools, two 6-8 middle schools, a 9-12 senior high school, an alternative school and a robust online learning program for students and families. The district provides a broad range of programs from foundational learning skills, to comprehensive vocational programs, to an exhaustive array of post-secondary college credit opportunities. The school district prides itself on the academic achievement of its students, successful athletic programs, nationallyrecognized club and activity organizations and an exhaustive list of academic and elective opportunities available to students. The district’s partnership with community
organizations has been pivotal to its continued success; highlighted by support groups who have provided nearly half a million dollars to assist students and programs through such venues as the Hermiston Sports Booster Club, Hermiston Education Foundation, Band Boosters, FFA Alumni and the community sponsorship of the student homebuilding program, to name a few. Community support towards the district is very strong. In 2001 voters approved a $39-million-dollar capital construction bond which included the reconstruction of the high school, an additional elementary school and various district-wide renovations. In 2008, voters also approved a $69.9 million bond that helped replace Armand Larive Middle School, West Park and Sunset Elementary.

The district employs over 520 full-time staff, which includes approximately 300 teachers and over 200 classified, support and supervisory personnel; making it one of the largest employers in the city of Hermiston. The district serves some 28,000 residents, where one-third of the population is Hispanic. This community embraces diversity.

AN AGRICULTURE HAVEN Agriculture has been deeply rooted in Hermiston since the city’s beginning. Hermiston is widely known for being a leader in agriculture. New irrigation techniques developed long ago, particularly circle sprinklers, led to the farming of much land formerly covered by sagebrush. Hot days and cool summer nights are an integral factor for Hermiston’s ideal growing season. Today, Hermiston excels in the ag industry due to advances made by researchers like the Hermiston Agricultural Research & Extension Center. The HAREC is part of Oregon State University’s Ag Extension program and serves nearly 500,000 acres of irrigated agriculture in Oregon and Washington’s Columbia Basin. The center concentrates on discover and implementation of agricultural and horticultural opportunities and the identification of new crops, production practice and plant breeding. The most recent additional to the center is a molecular biologist with specific interest in helping to increase
nutrients essential for human health in existing crops grown in the area.

Hermiston welcomed another research center, DuPont Pioneer Hi-Bred. The state-of-theart center has contribute to Hermiston’s economy as one of many steps taken by DuPont to help meet the global challenge to double agricultural productivity on the farm by 2050. Pioneer Hi-Bred focuses on trial seed production to advance corn product development for the commercialization of new corn hybrids.

GROWING business and industry
Our region is rich in agriculture and has vibrant business climate. Industry large and small is investing in the greater Hermiston area; logistics are an important factor as Hermiston is located on the corner two major highways that connect products via the I-84 and I-82 corridor. The Port of Umatilla County is located right on the mighty Columbia River and is situated adjacent to the region’s vast highway and rail systems and serves the commercial, industrial agricultural, wood products, maritime surface transportation and distribution. Since the 1860s Hermiston has been connected to the railroad industry and the Union Pacific Railroad in Hermiston is home to a major rail terminal and diesel shop that work 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to keep the American economy moving.
The City of Hermiston and ODOT have recently partnered to install new traffic signals and additional turn lanes at Elm and 11th (also known as Hwy. 207) located by the hospital. This addition on the trucking route will help local producers move their products to the processing plants on the edge of town. Meanwhile, the hospital is in the middle of several large expansion projects, which will result in 50 new full-time jobs. Regionally Hermiston is home to a Wal-Mart distribution center, generating power plants, major food processors, the largest onion producer in the world, Dupont Pioneer Seed Company, Fed Ex, UPS, transport and trucking companies, data centers, solar farms and a manufactured home company. New businesses are also opening their doors as the industry and trade continues to grow. In addition, new retail stores, art plan and revitalizing Hermiston’s Downtown District are on the horizon.
