During a Hippotherapy session, a specially trained therapist uses a horse as a therapeutic tool to achieve the rider's therapy goals such as improving balance or muscle coordination.

Why a horse? A horse's multidimensional movement provides therapeutic input as a means of improving coordination, balance, and strength. Our trained staff combines the movement with specific exercise activity to improve the rider's overall functional ability.

HISTORY

Hist ory comes alive in local museum Where we have been ultimately dictates where we are going. Henderson County, established in 1821, is no different, having been named for Lt. Colonel James Henderson of the Tennessee State Militia.

Begin your visit at Parker’s Crossroads, just off of Interstate 40 at exit 108. The visitors center, housing a small museum, displays artifacts from the Battle of Parker’s Cross Roads. You can walk the trails to re-live what it was like during the battle while viewing the cannons and visiting the McPeake Cabin.

The first courthouse, built in 1822 as a small log house, was reconstructed soon after in 1827 with a brick structure built by Samuel Wilson. Since then, several other courthouses have been re-built on the current square in Lexington. Visit the Beech River Cultural Center & Museum to hear more exciting facts about the county.

Sardis is home to the oldest existing original one-room log school/church and was built during the Reconstruction Era.

 A meteorite fell near the Doe Creek Church in 1833, and the ground smoldered for days.  One of the largest men who ever lived was a resident here. Mills Darden is said to have weighed over 1,100 pounds.  A mysterious preacher passed through this area in 1878. Robert Edge converted several followers, and no one seemed to know how he got from place to place.  A resident dog here had the ability to eat metal tacks or ordinary carpet tacks without injury. This one-dog act was displayed by his owner, Ben Jacobs, where people paid to see this remarkable performance.

This location marks a stop on the Civil War Trail, with the most significant museum and marker sites in Tennessee.

The southern border of our county is Scotts Hill, which was incorporated in 1917 and named after a merchant, Michajah Scott. He built his store atop a hill across from the present Methodist Church. The Heritage Collection Museum in Scotts Hill preserves information from the past for future generations.

Forward-thinking Henderson County resident Dick Berry, along with Tennessee Valley Authority and Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, developed a program in 1961, the Beech River Watershed Development. This program has provided economic development for Henderson County along with outdoor recreation, water supply, flood protection and lakefront living.

Famous people/Tennessee music pathways W.S. “Fluke” Holland: Drummer for Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash. He is a true pioneer of American Rockabilly.

Randall Wallace: American screenwriter and producer, known for “Braveheart.”

Murray”Buddy” Cannon: Producer and songwriter also known for launching careers for Shania Twain, Sammy Kershaw and Kenny Chesney. Known for song writing and producing for Willy Nelson and Alison Krauss.

Whitney Duncan: Singer-songwriter who grew up in Scotts Hill. She is known for the songs “When I Said I Would” and “Skinny w w w. h c t n . o r g

Dippin’.” She recorded a Christmas single with Kenny Rogers. Duncan also competed on the 23rd season of “Survivor: South Pacific” and the 25th season of “The Amazing Race.” She now sings with the band Post Monroe.

Raymond Parker Creasy: Named as a banjo champion in Branson Missouri.

Jonathan Singleton: American Grammynominated country music singer-songwriter known for songs like “Watching Airplanes,” “Let It Rain” and “Why Don’t We Just Dance.”

Curtis McPeake: A veteran five-string banjo player and recording artist from Scotts

Hill. Played with Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs and Bill Monroe.

The Gilbert Family: From Scotts Hill.

They are associated with the New York Philharmonic and the Memphis Symphony.

CIVIL WAR TRAILS: Historians can explore the battlefields of the Union and Confederate troops through exhibits along

the trails at Parker’s Crossroads, such as the south loop, the artillery trails and the Jones cemetery, which houses a well for watering the cavalry horses and the grave sites of John Parker and his wife, Rebecca. Hear the captivating stories of antiquity leading us to the course of this present day.

HISTORIC LEXINGTON IN HENDERSON COUNTY: Enjoy the tales of the Henderson County Courthouse Square. The mystery of the many architectural structures of the courthouse can be discovered in our Beech River Cultural Center and Museum.

DOE CREEK SCHOOL: Visit the schoolhouse/church in Sardis, which also provides a marker of the Civil War Trail. This is one of the last original log homes still standing in the state of Tennessee. Hear stories of the Calvary camping here and legendary schoolmaster, Elmer Duck, who taught here for 54 years.
