The intersection of Interstates 91 and 89 just south of Hanover has made the area an important crossroads of northern New England. With the highways so close by, if you rise early you can explore the coast of Maine, catch a Red Sox game at Fenway Park or shop in Montreal – and still be home in time for dinner.

HISTORY

he signing of the Declaration of Independence was still 15 years away when, on July 4, 1761, colonists from Connecticut were granted a charter to roughly seven square miles of heavily wooded land in the Connecticut River Valley of New Hampshire. The first permanent settlement was started in 1765, east of today’s Hanover, where the rushing waters of Mink Brook powered saw mills and grist mills vital to the future of this rural outpost.

The village that sprung up around Dartmouth grew and eventually replaced today’s Hanover Center as the business hub of the town. Now, Hanover is an eclectic mix of downtown businesses and restaurants centered on a traditional Main Street and the more rural villages of Etna and Hanover Center. A population that nearly doubled from 6,259 in 1950 to over 11,200 today is almost evenly split between full-time residents and Dartmouth students. Across the river, Norwich has a population of 3,414, according to the 2010 census.

Townspeople and students alike enjoy a vibrant and safe community that combines the cultural and business advantages of a city with the charms of small-town life – all in all an area of unparalleled natural beauty.

Dartmouth College was chartered in December 1769, and when the college formally opened in 1770, an estimated 20 families were living in Hanover. In 1778, Hanover and several other Grafton County towns seceded from New Hampshire and were admitted to the state of Vermont. They rejoined New Hampshire in 1784. By the time of the first census in 1790, 1,380 people called Hanover their home.

rom cross-country or downhill skiing to kayaking on the Connecticut River, from hiking the Appalachian Trail to shopping on classic Main Street, from meandering through any of the many noted museums or galleries to dining in any of several dozen restaurants, the Hanover Area is more than just a home to those who live here. It’s also a getaway from the grind of daily life for people from around the country.

Visitors to the Upper Valley can enjoy a spacious room at the historic Hanover Inn or the enchanting Norwich Inn, sit on the porch overlooking the bustling corner of Main Street or put their feet up at a laid-back inn on a hilly back road in the quaint villages of Etna or Lyme.

Downtown Hanover also includes the more modern choice of Six South Street Hotel,

When the sun sets, it’s time to check out any of the many area theaters or live performance venues. You might go to Dartmouth’s Hopkins Center for the Performing Arts, see the latest flick at downtown Hanover’s Nugget Movie Theater, listen to live local musicians, or head across the river to White River Junction, Vermont, to catch a Northern Stage performance at its new home, the Barrette Theater, no matter where you choose, there are always performances to enjoy throughout the year.

There’s always a reason to visit and plenty to see and do. The Farmers Market on the Dartmouth Green runs every Wednesday

from mid-June through mid-October with regular and rotating vendors, including those who sell fresh local produce or prepared foods in the late afternoon amidst live musical entertainment. A visit to the area might include Hanover’s Occom Pond Party in February, the quaint Hanover Center Old Timers Fair and Oxen Pull in June or Ivy League football games and leaf-peeping in the fall. December brings Celebrate the Season events, which include great shopping, crafting and caroling, as well as the Handel Society Holiday singing. Despite its modest population, Hanover, like Norwich, features a full-time police force.

Hanover also offers 24-hour fire and EMT coverage. Moreover, these environmentally progressive towns provide curbside recycling and filtered water to those on the town system. Cell phone coverage has improved and high-speed Internet is available in all of downtown and much of the local area.

The Hanover Area has seen a growth of green “clustered housing” options in recent years. The town voted overwhelmingly to donate land and work with the developers of “Gile Hill,” an environmentally friendly and energy-efficient neighborhood to offer affordable housing near the hospital and downtown. ith the gently flowing Connecticut River on the western edge of town, hiking trails running to the 2,300-foot peak of Moose Mountain to the east, and Hanover Country Club, Occom Pond and Storrs Pond, Hanover has everything for an active and healthy lifestyle.

The Appalachian Trail passes through Norwich and crosses the Connecticut River to meander straight through downtown Hanover before ducking back into the woods. It’s not unusual for a family out for a short walk to find themselves chatting with “thru-hikers” traveling the 2,190 miles from Georgia to Maine on foot.

The par-71 public course at the Hanover Country Club measures almost 6,500 yards.

Tennis and swimming enthusiasts are right at home at Storrs Pond, a fee based area which features tennis and basketball courts, a pond and a pool, wooded walking trails, picnic areas and secluded camping sites. Norwich’s Huntley Meadows offers tennis courts and fields for playing Frisbee. Horseback riders of all ages enjoy Dartmouth’s Morton Farm, where college students and community members ride and board horses. Additional area golf courses, campgrounds, swimming and fishing holes

are easy to find and accessible to all. For water sports, the Ledyard Canoe Club rents canoes and kayaks and offers instruction at reasonable rates. You can even reserve the Titcomb Cabin on Gilman Island for an overnight adventure and easy paddle from town, or you can fly fish for native trout at Mink Brook or fish for bass on Goose Pond.

Come winter, the Dartmouth Cross-Country Ski Center offers rentals and memberships for access to more than 25 kilometers of groomed cross-country ski trails at Hanover Country Club and adjacent Storrs Pond, where the Oak Hill Ski Area hosted the NCAA Championships. Downhill skiers flock to the Dartmouth Skiway, a family area with a new lodge but an old-time feel featuring skiing and snowboarding. Many of the top ski areas in New England are within an easy drive. The whole family will enjoy sledding at Hanover Country Club or skating on Occom Pond, Campion Rink and Thompson Arena.

t its core, Hanover is a community of teachers and learners. Known as the home of the Ivy League’s Dartmouth College, the town also features one of the most highly regarded public school systems in New England. The Dresden School District is comprised of four schools in Hanover, New Hampshire and Norwich, Vermont; formed in 1963, it was the first interstate school district in the nation.

With approximately 750 students, Hanover High School features a faculty that would be the envy of many small colleges. The school regularly sends over 96 percent of its students to colleges, including many of the finest schools in the country. Hanover’s wide-ranging athletics programs often win state championships in a variety of sports, and students are also honored in music, science and quiz bowl competitions.

The Richmond Middle School and Ray Elementary School in Hanover, the Marion Cross School in Norwich, and the Lyme School in Lyme, New Hampshire all prepare students for the challenging curriculum at the high school.

Top students at Hanover High are able to take courses at Dartmouth College, whose student body is comprised of 4,200 undergraduates and 2,000 graduate students. Dartmouth offers 17 graduate programs in the arts and sciences and three graduate professional schools – the Geisel School of Medicine, the Thayer School of Engineering, and the Amos Tuck School of Business. Virtually anywhere on and close to campus, visitors can access the weather, travel information, or their email through Dartmouth Public, the college’s free WiFi portal.

Several private independent day school alternatives offer rich academic curriculums balanced with small class size and a broad interest in character development.

These include Crossroads Academy (K-8) in Lyme, New Hampshire; the Montessori Children’s School (preschool and kindergarten) in Etna, New Hampshire; and the Upper Valley Waldorf School (nursery school through grade 8) in Quechee, Vermont.

From a host of preschools to the groundbreaking Rassias Foundation for learning languages to the Osher Institute for Lifelong Learning at Dartmouth (Osher@ Dartmouth), the Hanover Area is abundant with learning opportunities.

Following a major expansion, Hanover’s Howe Library features 79,000 volumes, three meeting rooms, banks of Internetready computers, and open WiFi access. The satellite Etna Library, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, features 6,000 volumes, as well as story time, a summer reading program and other special programs for children. The libraries of Dartmouth College also are open to the public. In Norwich, Vermont, you’ll find the Norwich Public Library, offering a Community Room space for local groups, exhibit space for artists in addition to the collection of over 35,000 volumes and free Internet access.

Also located in Norwich is the Montshire Museum, an award-winning, hands-on science museum whose 110-acre facility opened in 1991. It hosts 150,000 visitors annually, including 13,000 school children from New Hampshire and Vermont.

orbes magazine has called the HanoverLebanon Area of the Upper Connecticut River Valley the strongest regional economy in the nation for communities of its size. Helping make the Hanover Area so economically stable are DartmouthHitchcock Medical Center and Dartmouth College, the largest local employers with over 10,000 employees between them.

Hypertherm, Inc. (the world leader in plasma-cutting technology), was named by the Society for Human Resource Management as one of the “50 Best Small & Medium Companies to Work for in America.” It also has been recognized by Business New Hampshire Magazine as one of the top large companies in the state to work. Other area companies include: TomTom (a leader in digital mapping and other geographic data), whose American headquarters are in Lebanon; King Arthur Flour, located in Norwich, Vermont; and Trumbull-Nelson Construction, located in Hanover, NH. In addition to the hospital, college, retail, manufacturers and technology companies, Hanover is a banking center. It is home both to large regional banks as well as smaller, independent and locally owned banks that

boost the already-stable economy with local investments. Professional services, health care, hospitality and food service are major industries in the Hanover Area, where an estimated one out of every three employees walks to work. The U.S. Census Bureau cites the average commute as being just 13.9 minutes. A whopping 96.3 percent of the workforce over 25 years of age has at least a high school degree and 78.1 percent have a bachelor’s degree or greater.

Downtown Hanover has seen carefully considered changes over the years as it continues to balance new growth and design with the maintenance of handsome, older buildings. Ledyard Financial Advisors built an eye-catching office building just off Main Street on Maple Street, and Dartmouth College’s new Black Family Visual Arts Center opened in 2012. Much of the new construction in recent years has been the result of a coordinated effort by the town and the college to add retail, office and residential space that complements the unique character of the town.

On the outskirts of town, Centerra Resource Park – a business park and marketplace – is a growing development on Route 120 that includes a business incubator. Its location near Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and proximity to both downtown Hanover and Lebanon make it a premier location for commercial businesses and light industry.

artmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) is a 417-bed tertiary care hospital, New Hampshire’s only Level 1 Trauma Center, and multispecialty group practice located on the Hanover-Lebanon town line. In December, be sure to catch Celebrate the Season, an annual family night in town, a performance by the Christmas Revels or the Christmas Mystery at Rollins Chapel.

The five members of the select board are elected for staggered three-year terms on Town Meeting day, the second Tuesday in May. The select board, which is charged with implementing town meeting decisions, hires the town manager, who serves as the chief executive officer of the

town. The town manager oversees Hanover’s daily operations and is the administrative head of all town departments. The town manager is responsible for hiring and town administrative services such as finance, accounting and revenue collection.

Norwich, Vermont also has a five-person select board and town manager.
