“Once finished, Imperial Lofts will offer upscale market-rate apartments, creative workspaces and flexible storage options,” says Gaskin. “The Imperial Lofts are scheduled to open in the fall of 2018,” says Gaskin. “We love doing so as the sites then enjoy a new chapter of relevance to the community and the investments reinvigorate the surrounding neighborhoods. We invest several million dollars to bring each project to fruition. We believe our strategy saves these important sites from their often-derelict states and facilitates their transformations.” Next on their agenda is the restoration of the John Randolph Hotel. “We are in the design phase of the project located at 327 Main Street in South Boston,” Gaskin says. “We are pursuing the building redevelopment into a boutique hotel.” Initial plans for the boutique hotel are to include nearly 30 guest rooms, a rooftop bar and restaurant. “After I finished all of my postgraduate medical training, my husband and I made a very conscious decision to move back to Halifax County, despite my faculty appointment in a different county, in a different state! At the time six years ago, my oldest son was just getting ready to start Elementary School. We wanted to raise our children in a place that embraced virtues that were important to us: a place where family was a priority and there was a strong sense of community. As a product of the local public school system myself, I also wanted to ensure that my children would be well equipped to have the same successes academically as their counterparts in larger cities. With both of our families here, Halifax County seemed to be the best fit. Halifax County is such a gem with its many secret treasures—the vibrant performing arts scene and some fabulous local cafes, restaurants, gyms and shops. I feel blessed that I am able to commute to work and do something that I’m passionate about and come home to a place that I love.” —Lisa J. A PLACE TO DO BUSINESS Companies Find Longevity in Halifax County

aking the lead and fostering a strong sense of business is what Halifax County is all about. With the area’s trustworthy and well-equipped workforce, companies are expanding. “The new businesses we opened downtown, five new ones and one expansion have brought new lifeblood, traffic and enthusiasm to the central business district,” says Tom Raab, town manager of South Boston. Because of such growth, businesses like ABB, Grand Springs, B&B Consultants, Inc. and Harris, Harvey, Neal & Co. LLP continue to flourish. Keeping individuals hydrated both near and far is what Grand Springs Natural Spring Water has made their specialty. “Grand Springs is a privately held company in the rural area of Halifax County, Virginia,” says Robert Smith, president/ chief executive officer of Grand Springs. “We provide private label co-packing services for national name brand companies.” Nestled along nearly 500 acres of protected property in Alton, Virginia, Grand Springs offers local jobs and a product from a natural water source. “We provide employment for more than 80 residents of Halifax County. The business has grown from eight employees to 80 plus,” Smith says. “We have grown through a slow and methodical process called work. We have worked at the business every day to grow and improve the infrastructure so

location at 706 Hamilton Boulevard and added concrete testing to its services. The company began operations in South Boston nearly 20 years ago. Another pillar business for Halifax County is Harris, Harvey, Neal & Co. LLP. The company is one of the oldest and largest public accounting firms in the area. After coming to Halifax County in 1996, the accounting firm has continued to grow thanks to their wonderful clients. The firm moved to it’s new location on Edmunds Street in December 2017 and is eager to serve existing clients as well as new ones. Helping Halifax County’s companies stay connected, Mid-Atlantic Broadband Communities Corporation (MBC) is a leader in fiber network connectivity. MBC’s fiber networks offer affordable broadband connectivity, which helps drive economic growth throughout the area and beyond. In addition, MBC works with other local partnerships to recruit businesses and jobs to this portion of Virginia due to its availability of such fiber networks. n By Gennie Taylor

A POSITIVE RESULT

In November of 2017, ABB announced an upcoming expansion that will result in additional jobs for Halifax County. The expansion will include a strategic realignment of its transformer manufacturing, engineering and service footprint. Another growing Halifax County company is B&B Consultants, Inc. Since its inception, the engineering and surveying services company has seen continuous growth. Most recently in South Boston, B&B moved to its new

Start-Ups Share Success Stories Business in downtown South Boston is stronger than ever. In 2017, the town was selected as one of five communities in Virginia to receive a $60,000 Community Business Launch Grant for the SoBo Start-Up! Program. One year later, recipients of the program report they are thriving and that excitement about Main Street is growing by leaps and bounds. Southern Plenty has become a cornerstone of downtown since it opened in earnest in 2010 as a small coffee counter in the back of a bookstore. After recognizing a void in food options within the neighborhood, owner Mary Bagwell transformed the coffee counter into a full-grown café. “Expanding and having more things for sale has really, really helped the business,” says Bagwell. “It’s very eclectic, and it’s evolving.” Also evolving is Sweet Cee’s Gifts and Kids Consignment, which is owned by Candace and Nelson Baskervill. The couple used their grant to open a brickand-mortar location for their customized apparel, decal and gifts business, which had previously operated out of their basement. “You learn a lot in the first year of business,” says Candace Baskervill. “I didn’t know what to expect, but it was wonderful. We had a great year. I’m happy.” Lauren Tetterton and Taylor Jennings also received a grant to launch a new business. Southern Frills focuses on trendy, quality, affordable apparel and accessories delivered with a personal shopping experience. THE LAY OF THE LAND Agriculture Plays Vital Role in Economy

Juicy cantaloupe, fresh garden vegetables, lots of cattle and plump poultry bring fabulous foods to the table both locally and across the nation. More than just tasty, agriculture—including forestry—is big business. “It’s the backbone of the Halifax County economy,” says Kimley Blanks, agricultural marketing director of Halifax County. “The market value of the raw commodity

of agriculture is enormous. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that our annual crop and livestock market value is $36 million and forestry is $7 million.” A vast portion of the county is zoned for agriculture, notes Blanks, producing banner crops of soybeans, tobacco, hay, wheat and vegetables. “Overall, agriculture and forestry are two of the state’s largest industries,” Blanks says. “Combined, both industries generate an economic impact of $91 billion annually, providing more than 400,000 jobs in the Commonwealth of Virginia.” Livestock production fuels the economy too,

The Chamber’s annual Virginia Cantaloupe Festival draws crowds from all over the state and surrounding areas. including feeder cattle, goats, lamb and poultry. “Feeder cattle is a big industry and opportunity throughout the state and here in Halifax,” says Blanks. “Our county is where the Southern Virginia Beef Alliance (SVBA) is headquartered.” The SVBA serves farmers who produce feeder cattle, helping them sell their calves by combining into larger loads that better meet the needs of cattle buyers. A similar organization, the Southern Virginia Meat Goat Association (SVMGA) is headquartered locally, too, says Blanks. SVMGA was established to improve the economic viability of the meat goat industry in Southern Virginia through the development of cooperative marketing strategies, consumer and producer education and overall herd improvement. There are plenty of sweet spots in the agricultural economy too. “We produce fabulous honey,” says Blanks, “and the Halifax County Beekeepers Association works to educate their members and the public about the benefits of honey and beekeeping.” The county may be most famous for producing mouthwatering cantaloupes. “It’s sweet and delicious, some of the best cantaloupe you’ll ever taste,” says Blanks. “Every bite makes you want another.” In fact, thousands flock to the annual Virginia

Cantaloupe Festival held in Halifax County every summer to sample the luscious melon. Visitors boost the economy and often visit additional agri-tourism destinations along the way, including wineries and working farms that produce some of the state’s finest culinary offerings. To get a taste of the bounty Halifax County offers, just visit the farmers markets. The Downtown South Boston Farmers Market is open Saturdays in March, April and May, as well as Monday through Saturday throughout the summer months. The market, located across from True Value, offers fresh produce, local treats, entertainment and more. The Halifax Farmers Market, located downtown in the Halifax Courthouse Historic District, boasts a wide range of fruits, veggies, baked goods, USDA inspected meats and more. The Halifax market is open on Saturdays, from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. during the season. n By Cathy Cuthbertson W W W. H A L I F A X C H A M B E R . N E T

PREPARED & PROSPEROUS Fostering a Generation of Go-Getters

rom the early school years through higher education, Halifax County schools are preparing the next generation of employees for the workforce. A highly strategic shift is putting the spotlight on learning that focuses on highwage, in-demand jobs. “There’s nothing more important than partnering with the community to develop the workforce,” says Dr. Mark Lineburg, the new superintendent of Halifax County Public Schools and long-time professional educator with 26-years experience in Virginia public schools. Part of his vision is to broaden educational pathways, ramping up on training and skills development that quickly leads to employment. “We’re being very strategic about the way we go about this, and instead of teaching in silos, we’re building a program that will be completely interdisciplinary,” says Lineburg. “We’re moving toward a complete, full-career center model. It’s very innovative and progressive.” Encouraging the new direction, Lineburg and district officials recently conducted a career and technical education audit. “It was very important for us to find out what the community wants and needs,” says Lineburg. “We listened and looked at jobs and offerings, and talked to industry to

The team worked tirelessly to create a robot that performed a specific set of tasks. Being invited to such a prestigious event is only a sign of the direction the school district is heading. Educational leaders and institutions are aligned in initiatives to reach and train more students for highdemand careers, including fields such as mechatronics, welding and information technology offered at Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC). “Our workforce training efforts have led to 173

individuals completing training, earning skills and becoming employed, having a significant impact on our trainees, their families and the regional economy,” says Hope Harris-Gayles, associate director of communications and outreach at SVHEC. A well-rounded portfolio of offerings include IT training in the IT Academy, leading to dual certifications in A+ and Server+. Advanced training in Network+ and Security+ are offered too. A mechatronics program combines electrical, mechanical, fluid power, robotics and computer systems to control a process. Individuals who complete the mechatronics program are more efficient technicians, who are able to troubleshoot and repair industrial systems at a faster rate. Because we teach using an integrated, systems-based approach, mechatronics training opens the door to a wide variety of career pathways from industrial maintenance to electrician,” says Harris-Gayles. Helping students develop financial management and life skills, area businesses are partnering with schools. With a student-staffed office located at Halifax County High School, URW Community Federal Credit Union teaches students about work and finance. “We work with the school to make sure students are educated about financial responsibility,” says Kathy Bane, branch manager of the credit union in South Boston. “And we provide part-time jobs for them on campus. It’s a long-term benefit to students and the community.” Adding even more to help prepare employees for the job market, the Southside Virginia Community College’s (SVCC) Center for Workforce Development assists employers with economic and human resource development. The center offers seminars, literacy-, apprentice- and customized-training opportunities, consultations, networking and more. On top of that, SVCC boasts workforce credential programs in areas such as machining skills, nurse aide, welding, truck driving and massage therapy, just to name a few. Danville Community College (DCC) provides academic excellence in curriculums leading to a degree or certification in careers offering excellent prospects for future employment. These career studies certificates include advanced welding, culinary arts, EMS, dental assisting, logistics management and more. DCC also offers credit and noncredit workforce programs in areas like alternative energy technology, electrical concepts, manufacturing technician, leadership and the like. AstroCamp, located in Clover, Virginia, spans more than 400 acres, with exceptional facilities and labs. Here, campers will explore physical sciences, the natural world and even outer space. The camp allows children to learn and make lifelong friendships while bonding over a common interest. n Cathy Cuthbertson
