Chairman’s Message Welcome to the Green Oaks, Libertyville, Mundelein, Vernon Hills (GLMV) area of Lake County, Illinois. The GLMV Chamber of Commerce is proud to celebrate 69 years of service to the business community, offering a wide array of programs, activities, services and events. Living in Green Oaks Green Oaks is a small community that offers quiet country living, excellent schools, single-family homes on large lots and access to major highways. Green Oaks was founded in 1960 as a municipal barrier to intense urban and industrial expansion in neighboring areas, according to the Village website. From the beginning, Village ordinance has provided for a pattern of one-, two- and five-acre lot residential zoning and strict standards over environmentally sensitive lands. In fact, the community’s dedication to low growth and protecting “the opportunity to live in an open countryside environment” is even spelled out in its planning commission’s policies. While it was not incorporated until 1960, the Green Oaks area had residents much earlier. Irish immigrants braved the dense forests, swamps, poor clay soil and wolves to move in during the 1840s. The first school in the area, Madden School, was built in 1850 and used until 1923 when the original Oak Grove School replaced it. Today Green Oaks has 3,863 residents spread over 4.12 square miles along I-294. The areas of the Village on the west side of the tollway are almost exclusively residential while the much smaller percentage of the community located east of I-294 is largely reserved for office and industrial use as the Village strives to raise sufficient tax money to defray the cost of Village
services. The Village is excited to announce that two major assisted living projects are expected to break ground in 2015. The first, a Spectrum Retirement Community called Green Oaks Senior Living, will be located on the old Jamaican Gardens site. The second project will be constructed on the old Hilltop property, and will be called the Sheridan at Green Oaks Senior Living Facility. In 2014, the Village created the Roundout Area Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District.

L iving Libertyville’s history extends back to the 1830s, with incorporation in 1882. But you will find few buildings in town that date to those early years, thanks to the Great Libertyville Fire of 1895 which destroyed most of the town and caused the Village fathers to decree that everything be rebuilt in brick. As a result, the community’s ambiance is picture perfect thanks to the fact that it was all built around the same time. One of the few exceptions to the brick architecture is the Cook House, a Victorian mansion which survived the fire. The structure now serves as Libertyville’s historical museum and is attached to the library. Libertyville is so picturesque that the National Trust for Historic Preservation awarded the town a Great American Main Street Award, calling it “a place with its own sense of self, where people still stroll the spas, boutiques and a microbrewery.” In addition to the historic downtown, the Village’s main commercial corridors include Park Avenue (Route 176), Milwaukee Avenue (Route 21) and Peterson Road (Route 137). Living in Vernon Hills Vernon Hills is the shopping hub of the region, thanks to its many national stores and the recently expanded Westfield Hawthorn shopping mall. It also serves as home to numerous large employers, business parks, a Town Center, restaurants and retailers. This community of 25,678 people was unincorporated farmland until 1958 when developers purchased some of that land and built a 125-home subdivision which they quickly incorporated and named “Vernon Hills.” The population of the community was so minuscule that until 1971, the Vernon Hills police and fire departments were run out of a local motel. Much changed, however, in 1971 when plans were announced for the construction of a large shopping mall on the northwest corner of the intersection of Route 60 and Milwaukee Avenue. Town fathers immediately purchased two portable buildings to serve as their new village hall and both residential and commercial development in the area took off. In fact, nine years later, in 1980, Vernon Hills’ population had grown to almost 10,000 residents. Today this full-service community covers 7.92 square miles, offering a Metra station,

Jeanne and Jeff Silver, veterans of the automotive collision industry, chose to open their own CARSTAR franchise approximately 20 years ago and, after an exhaustive geographic search for the ideal location, settled upon 1066 Campus Dr. in Mundelein. So, we do our best to facilitate the process for them. The fact that her franchise actively and enthusiastically participates in the National Auto Body Council’s nationwide “Recycled Rides” program through which needy families are annually gifted with refurbished automobiles, makes Silver beam with pride. All of her 13 employees actively participate in the refurbishment process and the presentation to the deserving family or individual has become a big, emotional community event. This year CARSTAR Mundelein will give away its seventh car. “This program has blossomed into something wonderful,” Silver said.

Vernon Hills is home to Thybony, a full-service decorating store, located in the Hawthorn Hills Square shopping center at the intersection of Routes 60 and 21. It represents the hard work and dedication of four generations of the Thybony family. The current owner and president, Chris Larsen, is the great-grandson of the firm’s founder, William Thybony, a young painting contractor who immigrated to Chicago from Sweden in 1886; noticed a lack of paint stores; and chose to open one in the 300 block of Chicago Avenue. Additional stores have come and gone over the years, but Larsen currently owns stores in Vernon Hills, Glenview and Lake Bluff while his cousin, Jim Thybony, owns two in Chicago. The Lake Bluff store only sells paint. The Glenview store is an interior design and window treatments store. The Vernon Hills store, which last year relocated from a long-time Mundelein location, is a full-service decorating store that sells paint, window treatments, wall coverings and interior design services, utilizing degreed interior designers. “My parents, Ed and Marilyn Larsen, were very involved with the family business for many
years. Both have passed away but their impact remains an integral part of this business today. Thybony was a large wall covering company which distributed to 27 states. It involved many family members and employed more than 100 people,” Larsen recalled. “My uncle, Bud Thybony, designed and distributed beautiful lines of Thybony wallpaper and also distributed designer lines. Like me, my dad worked on the retail side. selling paint while 30 percent involves selling window and wall coverings, as well as interior design services. “We are a very large supplier to painting contractors and commercial, health care and industrial clients, as well as to homeowners. We help a lot of them choose colors,” Larsen said. “Our interior designers assist with their clients’ projects from beginning to end. We help with their selections of paint colors, wallpaper, window treatments, draperies and bedding. We also provide in-home consultations,” he added. Today, homeowners are gravitating back to wallpaper, especially on accent walls and in powder rooms. The most popular designs are those featuring clean, crisp geometric designs, according to Liz Schaiper, a Thybony designer. As for paint color, various shades of neutrals, especially shades of gray, are most popular. Homeowners are choosing to cover their windows with blinds and shades, but adding drapery panels to soften the edges of the windows. “Thybony is still in business 129 years later because family members understand that you have to love working with people and you must take the time to get to know your customers’ families and lifestyles. Café Pyrenees is a small French enclave, cozily tucked inside Libertyville’s Adler Square Shopping Plaza. It may be totally surrounded by Americana, but once you step inside its doors, you’re treated to a touch of southern France, courtesy of the Loustaunau family. The restaurant, which serves dinner five nights a week (Tuesday through Saturday), exudes wonderful aromas which are complemented by the décor that makes you feel like you have been transported half a world away with its warm colors, brick features, greenery and many bottles of wine on display. Chef Jean-Marc Loustaunau came to the United States from his native France in 1978 and spent 12 years working in another restaurant. Then, in 1990, he and his wife, Mari, decided to open their own restaurant. They originally located in Vernon Hills, but by 2005 had outgrown their facility there and moved to Libertyville. The current restaurant seats 160 people in the main room, plus 30 more in the dine-in bar area. When the weather is good, 30 more can be accommodated on the outdoor patio. Café Pyrenees also features a wine tasting room where they can host private parties and often feature
live jazz, blues and southern rock bands. Café Pyrenees specializes in nouveau French cuisine without all of the heavy sauces that many people associate with French food. Everything from the soups to the soufflés to the desserts is homemade each day by Chef Jean-Marc. “Ours is a casual, come-as-you-are and come-hungry restaurant. It is not a pretentious French restaurant. From the beginning, we wanted to make Café Pyrenees a place for
everyone and, as a result, we have watched those babies from our early days grow into adults and we have catered their graduations and rehearsal dinners. We have followed our customers’ families through their life events,” Mari explained. “At the same time, we raised our own three children who are now 36, 33 and 30. They still help in the restaurant when we ask them. Whenever I call, they are there because we are a very close family. Growing up in a family business taught them a strong work ethic and an understanding of the general public that continues to serve them well,” she added. In addition to feeding the people of the GLMV area, the Loustaunau family uses their restaurant to help the needy. They act as a collection place for everything from food, to diapers, to pet supplies, clothing, toiletries and more, finding organizations that are soliciting the items. “One year we ran a holiday gift program that just never ended. One of the main organizations that we help, for instance, is Catholic Charities’ Family Self-Sufficiency in Waukegan. We provide school supplies, toiletries, clothing and birthday and holiday presents for all of the children there and it is so much fun. At Café Pyrenees we want to be like that old television show ‘Cheers’. We want to know everyone’s name.”

Libraries COOK MEMORIAL PUBLIC LIBRARY DISTRICT
The Cook Memorial Public Library District provides two full-service libraries for 60,000 patrons in the GLMV and surrounding areas. The libraries are Cook Park Library, 413 N. Milwaukee Ave., in downtown Libertyville, and Aspen Drive Library, 701 Aspen Dr., Vernon Hills. “Both are highly trafficked and offer study rooms, meeting rooms, large collections and programming for all ages,” explained Rebecca Ferguson, communications coordinator. “Residents of the district are welcome to use either library. District neighborhoods, day care centers and senior centers are also served by a Bookmobile which makes regular stops each week.” The Cook Memorial Public Library District began in 1909 as a couple of book shelves in the Decker and Bond Pharmacy in Libertyville, maintained by the predecessor of today’s Libertyville Woman’s Club. Borrowing books became so popular that the library expanded to the Village Hall in 1914 and then, in 1920, the Ansel B. Cook home and grounds were donated for use as a library, so the collection was moved there the following year. In 1968, a separate building to house the library was constructed and the LibertyvilleMundelein Historical Society took over the Cook house as a museum. In the 1990s, demand for library services grew exponentially as the communities grew, so an auxiliary, interim library was opened in the basement of the Vernon Hills Village Hall for residents at the south end of the district. A second library, Aspen Drive Library, was constructed after the library’s board of directors approved a plan for expansion in 2007. An addition was also made to the Cook Park location. Aspen Drive opened in July 2010 and the addition to Cook Park was unveiled the following January, Ferguson said. Today, both libraries offer large collections, both traditional and electronic as well as hundred of classes and events each year. For instance, they are in the sixth year of their wildly popular “Authors Out Loud” series
which has attracted such well-known writers as Jodi Picoult, Chris Bohjalian and Louise Penny. Computer and technology classes on topics ranging from Windows 10, to how to use social media, to how to create a webpage, are also favorites. In fact, they are only open to district cardholders, due to the high demand. Not all events and classes require a reservation, however. Drop-ins are encouraged for guided meditation for adults, movie matinees, and many story times for children and families. Adults can even drop in for one-on-one technology help from a knowledgeable teenager on Saturdays. The teens are willing to troubleshoot any electronic device and answer questions, according to Ferguson. “The patron gets their questions answered; intergenerational rapport is created; and the digital literacy of the District increases,” she explained. “The teens are available every Saturday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Cook and from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Aspen.” Similar one-on-one assistance is available from librarians on an appointment basis. They will spend an hour with any patron who needs assistance on how to use and download from the eLibrary collection. “We don’t believe we will ever see a library
without books because there will always be some people who will want to hold a book in their hands. We have also found that it is easier to mark and flip through pages with an actual book while it is easier to search for a particular term and travel using an eBook,” Ferguson explained. “So there will be reasons to have both.” More than 100 magazines can be viewed in fully rendered form through Zinio, for instance. Similarly, Hoopla offers free music, movies, audiobooks, books, and comic books to library cardholders; Freegal allows library cardholders to access music tracks legally and without cost; and My Media Mall and 3M Cloud have a repertoire of thousands of books for download. “When you browse our catalog for a particular title, you will immediately be able to see all of the different formats in which we offer it,” Ferguson said. Cook and Aspen Libraries also host free monthly “Lunch Break” programs on various topics in conjunction with the GLMV Chamber of Commerce. Fremont Township residents, including parts of Mundelein and surrounding areas, voted to establish a library in 1955. Today those residents are served by a 78,000-square-foot, full-service library that opened in 2001 and is located at 1170 N. Midlothian Rd. in Mundelein. The most recent renovation was completed three years ago and involved the construction of a new check-out counter and other improvements. “Despite everyone’s worries about libraries becoming obsolete due to the Internet, we are finding that libraries are becoming more popular. They are evolving into community gathering places for people of all ages,” explained Jan Oblinger, adult program coordinator. “We have been seeing a steadily increasing
demand for ebooks, especially for travelers. So, our entire Adult Services staff has been trained to help patrons with their devices, offering oneon-one instruction on downloading whenever they request it,” she stated. “The interest in other electronic resources like Freegal for music, Zinio for magazines and My Media Mall for streaming video has also been phenomenal,” she continued. Use of the library’s online databases to access free resources like Ancestry.com, Consumer Reports, the A-Z Business Database and more has been increasing, too, as patrons realize that they can access some of these sites from home, 24/7, with just the use of their library card, according to Oblinger. Programming is another huge draw to the Fremont Public Library. Over 35,400 people of all ages attended programs last fiscal year,
ranging from music concerts to adult lectures to youth entertainers and drop-in craft workshops to writing and business workshops. “There is a lot going on here all the time. The Chamber of Commerce holds programs here once a month and we host workshops for entrepreneurs through the U.S. Small Business Association’s SCORE program. We also have regular programs for teens where they try out different crafts or enjoy gaming. Computer classes on everything from general computing to using Facebook are also very popular,” Oblinger said. The library also offers ESL classes, through Mundelein High School, citizenship classes, one-on-one tutoring for ESL students, homework help for schoolchildren and public safety sessions in partnership with Fremont Township CERT. Starting in 2015, the library began a telescope loaning program initiated by a donation from the Lake County Astronomical Society. That first telescope has led to the purchase of five more to meet patron demand. Fremont Library also hosts free monthly Business Corner educational programs on various topics in conjunction with the GLMV Chamber of Commerce. Unlike many municipalities that have separate Park Districts, the Village of Libertyville operates its parks, facilities and recreation programs through the Recreation & Sports Complex Department. The LSC features award-winning facilities including a Fitness Center, a Driving Range (open all year), a lighted Softball Field and the signature LSC “Indoor Events Center.” This indoor venue has two artificial turf fields for soccer, lacrosse, football and other sports, eight basketball courts for basketball and volleyball play, Conference Meeting Rooms and small Birthday Party rooms. The LSC centerpiece is the region’s tallest Climbing Mountain. The LSC has been the home to a wide variety of sports and special events including major Youth Basketball Tournaments, dog show agility competitions, business Trade Shows, School Graduations and Reunions, Family Parties, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs and other special events. The LSC has been a host site the past five years in a row for the “Roadwatch Parties” of the Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks. MUNDELEIN PARK & RECREATION DISTRICT
Mundelein Park & Recreation District’s tag line is “Connecting the Community” and in the past year the park district’s focus has been to make that process easier for residents. This fall was the debut of a newly designed brochure. It is now more functional while keeping the look appealing. Another new look will be the website. The new site rolls out later this year and will not only be easier to navigate, but will also be mobile-friendly. Efforts to expand and improve the district’s facilities are continual; this year many of the outdoor basketball courts were rejuvenated. This summer the park district took a new approach on three basketball courts at Leo Leathers, Maurice Noll and Gordon Ray Parks, using a slip sheet overlay method. A new court is literally built on top of the old court, which is less expensive than removing and replacing the existing court, said Margaret Resnick, executive director. Another improvement, (even though it’s a hazard) is the addition of a new bunker in the 8th hole at Steeple Chase Golf Club. While this addition may not be great news for some golfers, the new challenge will be a hit with many. Events are perhaps the most direct way to connect with the community. 2015 saw both new events and additions to many existing events. Here are a few highlights. The Cardboard Regatta is the newest annual event and fundraiser. It is open to both community and businesses. Boats are constructed using
only cardboard, duct tape and paint. Although small, the inaugural event was a splashing success. Proceeds go to The Mundelein Parks Foundation, which provides program scholarships to Mundelein residents needing financial assistance. Zumba on the beach was a new addition to the park district’s 2015 Community Picnic. Folks started the morning off dancing their way to fitness to the sounds of Latin music. This annual free beach event provides day-long fun for friends and family and culminates in the evening with a water ski show on Diamond Lake. Another event expected to grow is the ghoulish Carnival of Chaos, held every Friday and Saturday night during October. Started in 2014, this freakish haunted house is held at the entrance of Barefoot Bay. This event is geared toward ages 14 and up. Younger children will enjoy Boo Bash, one of the park district’s most successful autumn events. Next year the park district joins forces with the Mundelein Community Connection to present the 6th annual Mundelein Fine Arts Festival, held at Kracklauer Park. This juried art show features art from 45 artists, live music, local food and a high school tent to showcase up-and-coming artists. Annual scholarships are awarded to the high school students. Whether it be improvements to parks and facilities, programs or events, Mundelein Park & Recreation District continually strives to connect the community, making Mundelein a great place to live.
Since its founding in 1973, the Vernon Hills Park District has been serving the needs of a burgeoning area as open lands have been gradually replaced by houses full of families. Today the park district owns more than 400 acres of land and water, encompassing 24 parks and seven facilities. Among the newest facilities is the Lakeview Fitness Center at 700 Lakeview Pkwy. Formerly known as the Central Lake YMCA, the building was purchased by the park district in late 2012 and totally transformed, enlarged and updated in 2013, according to Cheryl Baron, Communications Manager. Today the facility includes a larger, redesigned group exercise area, cardio and free weight rooms with state-of-the-art equipment, a renovated spa area, new lobby area and a redesigned babysitting space. The entire building also got new flooring and a fresh coat of paint. Today it is the home of the park district’s fitness equipment and group exercise classes, as well as the Little Learners Childcare, a fully licensed, DCFS childcare facility for ages six weeks to five years. Lakeview’s indoor pool is also the home to the Turtles Swim Team. The Park District has acquired the Hawthorn Afterschool Program beginning fall 2015. The program is designed to provide positive afterschool activities for elementary children in a safe and enriching environment. The program is open to students in grades K-6, Monday through Friday with a before-school and afternoon program located at Hawthorn Elementary schools North and South. Baron is particularly proud, however, of the park district’s new, totally updated and interactive website. It, along with three program brochures mailed to residents each year, a monthly E-newsletter sent to subscribers and a monthly newsletter sent to Hawthorn District 73 students, will keep park district residents in touch with the many opportunities offered by the park district from competitive sports leagues to camps, dance and art classes to festivals. Come make new history and memories at the Lake County Fair! The Lake County Fair takes place each July at the Fairgrounds. The 88th annual Lake County Fair is scheduled for July 27-31, 2016. The rich history of the Lake County Fair actually dates back over 150 years. Its traditions and community involvement have made memories and great moments for visitors, year after
year, generation after generation. The first Lake County Fair was hosted by the Lake County Agricultural Society in 1851 in Antioch. In the years since, the fair has adopted a variety of names and has been hosted in townships throughout the county. In 1954 the Fair settled down in Grayslake, although it has been held in different locations within that community. In 1928 the official “Lake County Fair Association” was formed and in the following years they added various livestock shows and exhibits. While it was then, and still remains, an agricultural fair, over time many new exhibits, attractions and events have been added to educate and enrich the Lake County community including arts and crafts, industrial and agriculture innovation, homemaking, and culinary arts. Motor sports, live entertainment and a carnival also make for a great family experience. In addition to the fair, the Lake County Fairgrounds hosts a variety of events throughout the year, from antique shows to flea markets, expos, sports competitions and weddings, and has been a gathering place for many years. LAKE COUNTY FOREST PRESERVES
Fish, swim, canoe, bike, skate or take a hike through the scenic Lake County Forest Preserves, particularly those in the GLMV. The Independence Grove Forest Preserve in Libertyville, for instance, offers outdoor recreation
and education opportunities centered on a 115-acre lake. Surrounding prairie and woodlands provide a picturesque backdrop for fun activities from 6:30 a.m. to sunset, daily. Rent a canoe, kayak, stand up paddleboard, foot-and-hand-powered paddle boats, fishing boat, comfort bike, surrey bicycle or adaptive trikes. Helmets and flotation gear is provided. The swimming beach offers 400 feet of sand along the lake’s South Bay. Lifeguards are on duty when the beach is open. An entrance fee is charged. Sensory-rich play environment, located adjacent to the Visitors Center with state-ofthe-art handicap-adaptable play equipment and wide-paved pathways makes access comfortable and enjoyable for all visitors. Catch-and-release fishing (mandatory) is encouraged in a rich aquatic ecosystem with gently graded slopes and underwater islands. Anglers are encouraged to use barb-less, non-stainless steel hooks. State fishing licenses are required. The preserve also offers roughly 6.25 miles of trails, some paved and others made of crushed granite. Other forest preserves located in the GLMV Chamber area include: The Adlai E. Stevenson II Historic Home, Old School Forest Preserve, MacArthur Woods Forest Preserve, Ray Lake Forest Preserve, Half Day Forest Preserve and two canoe launches – Oak Spring Road and Route 60, plus a large section of the Des
