Welcome to the Findlay-Hancock County region of northwestern Ohio, where the city of Findlay is the county seat of beautiful Hancock County. We are proud of our region of more than 74,000, which boasts a rich history and heritage that span almost 200 years.

Findlay was named after Colonel James Findlay of Cincinnati, who built Fort Findlay in the War of 1812. After the war, the community was born and the first town lots were laid in 1821. Findlay was a safe stop along the Underground Railroad and later became known as a booming center for natural resources like gas and oil. For its part, Hancock County was created in 1820 and organized in 1828. It was named for American Revolution Patriot and statesman John Hancock, the first person to sign the Declaration of Independence.

Over the years, Findlay and Hancock County have become hubs for numerous corporations and innovations. Many companies still keep headquarters, distribution centers and plants here. Findlay is the headquarters of Cooper Tire and Rubber Company, Marathon Petroleum Company and MPLX LP, Blanchard Valley Health System and Whirlpool Corporation’s dishwasher manufacturing plant is notably the largest dishwasher plant in the world.

By 1968, Findlay became known as a place stoked in patriotism, thanks to the initial efforts of Findlay resident John B. Cooke, a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. Patriotic to the core, Cooke believed in the value of flying the American flag. He rallied neighborhood residents and businesses to display a flag on Flag Day, June 14, 1968. He also created a fund and purchased as many as 14,000 small replica flags to unify the effort in the community.

The project continued until 1974 and was later adopted by the Women’s Division of the Chamber of Commerce that not only pushed for more publicly displayed flags, but also to have Findlay officially recognized. Ultimately, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution declaring that Findlay was indeed Flag City, USA. You can see a flag display in the Hancock Historical Museum and pay homage to the all-brick Flag City monument that greets travelers at the I-75 exit and U.S. 224 Interchange.

For the third year in a row, Findlay has the distinction of being ranked the top micropolitan community in the U.S. for new and expanding facilities by Site Selection magazine, the official publication of the Global FDI Association and the Industrial Asset Management Council. The magazine ranked 575 of the nation’s micropolitan areas, cities of 10,000 to 50,000 people that cover at least one county.

The area’s Chamber of Commerce organization has played an integral role in bringing these communities together.

Established in 1887, the Findlay Chamber of Commerce was formed by area business leaders. They designed it to serve as a business association and marketing arm for the Findlay and Hancock County areas.

In 1988, the Chamber changed its name to the Findlay∙Hancock County Chamber of Commerce, and today celebrates its 130th anniversary. The Chamber now boasts an organizational membership that eclipses the 700 mark.

Seeing a need for greater synergy, the Findlay∙Hancock County Alliance was formed in 2011 encompassing the Findlay∙Hancock County Chamber of Commerce, Findlay∙Hancock County Economic Development and the Hancock County Convention & Visitors Bureau. With a strong focus on economic development,

This customized park was built to provide children and adults with disabilities a place to play baseball and enjoy the adaptive playground equipment. American Red Cross North Central Ohio Chapter For the past century, the American Red Cross of North Central Ohio has been focused on the business of saving lives. It established charters in Marion, Crawford, Hardin, Morrow, Seneca, Union and Wyandot counties in 1917. During its 100-year history, the mission has remained the same: to alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and generous donors.

To date, this chapter has worked with thousands of volunteers and has more than 600 currently. Its programs have grown to include disaster relief services; community disaster education programs; CPR and first aid; support for the U.S. armed forces and military families; blood collection for area hospitals; and a Home Fire campaign to install new, working smoke alarms in area homes and to train families in emergency preparedness and fire safety.

The chapter is led by Todd James, who was named the 2015 Nonprofit Leader of the Year by the Findlay•Hancock County Chamber of Commerce.

What started as a generous $5 million bequest from founding donor L. Dale Dorney in the 1970s became a full-fledged community foundation in 1992 that has granted more than $44 million back to the Hancock County community. Now, The Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation proudly celebrates its 25th anniversary with its many friends and neighbors. Over the past quarter century, more than 10,000 donors, large and small, have entrusted their funds with The Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation. In turn, the foundation has administered more than 370 charitable funds that benefit students and nonprofit organizations throughout Hancock County, and some of the major initiatives the foundation has supported with unrestricted gifts include The Family Center, Community Heart & Soul and the Handbags That Help women’s giving circle.

Dietsch Brothers Fine Chocolates & Ice Cream Dietsch Brothers Fine Chocolates & Ice Cream is a third-generation, family-owned and -operated business. When brothers Chris (Bud) and Don (Johnny) Dietsch purchased the Rogge Bakery in December 1937, they made the Findlay community, a sweeter place to be. Younger brother Roy (Snitz) joined in 1938, and together they dropped the bakery and focused

Whirlpool Corporation recently launched a $40.6 million expansion project to add 86,400 square feet to the existing facility to provide added assembly capacity and improve process flow throughout the plant.

Findlay Operations was the first plant built by Whirlpool Corporation and the first to be powered by wind from the Findlay Wind Farm.

TO date, the plant employs more than 2,300 people and is proud to continue the tradition of high quality American manufacturing.

A G R I C •UHancock L T U R E County Findlay According to the 2012 census of Agriculture, there are 831 farms in Hancock County and the average size of a farm is 277 acres. Agriculture serves as an important building block for the people in communities throughout the county.

The Hancock County fair takes place over Labor Day weekend each year. It’s the culmination of a year’s worth of hard work by our county 4-H and FFA junior fair participants. In addition, there are opportunities for people to enter many open class projects. The fairgrounds continues to make improvements to their buildings, including the addition of the Legacy Building and plans for three additional buildings to be built over the next several years.

Each year, the Hancock Soil and Water Conservation district sponsors the Hancock County farm tour. The tour provides an opportunity for people to learn about different farming operations around the county.

Our county is home to Legacy Farmers Cooperative, which features 11 grain facilities, five agronomy locations and Legacy Lawn & Pet. It also operates a propane delivery service and two petroleum cardtrol locations.

To show our appreciation for our farmers and those who work in the agriculture field, each year we hold the Farmer’s Share Breakfast. This is an opportunity to celebrate agriculture’s contributions to our economy. We elect new members to the Hancock County Agriculture Hall of Fame, which recognizes and honors outstanding contributions to agriculture by people in Hancock County. n

The Hancock Historical Museum hosts Classic Movie Nights monthly, as well as several other events and displays throughout the year. Events like Boogie on Main, Riverside Wine Festival, Car Tunes on Main and Street Feast pepper the warmer months and bring visitors from all over to our hometown.

In August, hot air balloons will hit the sky during the Flag City BalloonFest. This popular family event brings thousands into the

community. Guests will watch the balloons launch, see the magnificent glow and enjoy great food. The summer wraps up when the county joins together to celebrate the agricultural community and attends the Hancock County Fair.

Throughout the summer and fall, visitors are invited to visit Hancock County’s villages and towns by attending one (or all) of the homecoming festivals held in the communities. McComb Cookie Festival, Arlington Village Festival, Rawson Proud, Heritage Day in Mt. Blanchard, Arcadia SummerFest, Bluffton Fall Festival and the Van Buren Apple Butter Fest all celebrate what is the best part of Hancock County: the people.

Hancock County has a deep German background, and Oktoberfest celebrates Polka dancing, libations and authentic German food. Adults and children alike enjoy

this one-day celebration that includes a pageant, Volkswagen car show, kid’s zone, competitions and more.

Even when the weather turns cold, the fun continues. The City of Findlay Tree Lighting ceremony the day after Thanksgiving marks the beginning of WinterFest. During WinterFest, visitors can take a horse and wagon ride through downtown and accomplish holiday shopping locally. Good boys and girls will have the opportunity to meet Santa, munch on cookies and sip hot chocolate at Kiwanis Santa’s House.

There is plenty of everyday fun year-round to be had in Hancock County as well. The Mazza Museum is home to over 10,500 pieces of children’s book artwork, making it one of the most unique (and fun) museums you will ever visit. The Miracle League of Findlay is a nonprofit organization that provides children with disabilities the chance to fi

Parades celebrating many occasions, such as Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Veterans Day and Halloween, frequently march in our downtown streets. The Northwest Ohio Railroad Preservation, Inc. offers rides on their quarter-scale trains during the summer, as well as themed rides for the Pumpkin Train, Tracks to the Past and North Pole Express.

play Miracle League baseball, regardless of their abilities. The Children’s Museum of Findlay encourages children to use their imagination while learning at exhibits that celebrate the many different businesses and industries in Hancock County.

A drive through the countryside will be even more enjoyable for those on the Barn Quilt Trail. This self-guided trail will take you throughout the county on the lookout for these beautiful and colorful wooden squares that decorate the side of over 80 barns in every township.

A visit to any of the county or city parks is definitely time well spent. The Hancock County Park District provides programming throughout the year with diverse events offered every week.

These events serve visitors ages 2 to 102 and include story time, enchanted hikes, night hikes, star gazing and historical and education events. The

Hancock Park District also runs Zonta Landing at Riverside Park, where guests can rent watercrafts in the summer for an afternoon on the Blanchard River. For those interested in organized floats on the Blanchard, the Hancock Park District has that covered as well.

Throughout the spring, summer and fall, guests are invited to take part on these floats that can range from a quick seven-mile trip to an overnight trip of more than 30 miles.

The Hancock Park District not only organizes events, but also maintains beautiful parks throughout the county.

From the dog park at Riverbend to the nature trails at Oakwood, there is plenty for you to enjoy. Several parks and facilities are maintained by the City of Findlay as well. Go ice skating at The Cube, enjoy Fort Findlay Playground at Emory Adams Park or walk along the Waterfall Pavilion at Riverside Park for an enjoyable time in every season. n

While shopping and dining are high on everyone’s list, arts and culture are equally as important. Findlay and Hancock County are home to many great theater and art programs throughout the year. Whether you are enjoying a show in the new Marathon Center for the Performing Arts or Fort Findlay Playhouse, and whether you are enjoying a production featuring University of Findlay students, a group of volunteers or The Arts Partnership YouTheatre actors, you will be blown away by the talent right here in Hancock County.

Live music is popular at several spots in Findlay; Stop by nearly any local restaurant on a weekend and enjoy your dinner or drinks with a side of crooning. Art lovers of all ages and tastes will enjoy the art shows hosted by the Findlay Art League, browsing the open galleries in the Jones Mansion or taking a class at one of the many downtown art studios.

Plus, there are many events that are designed with the art and music lover in mind. ArtWalk, which takes place the first Friday in May and November, is enjoyable for all. Browse downtown galleries and shops for different displays, demonstrations and shows. Summer music events like the lunchtime Courtyard Concerts, mid-week outdoor Riverside Concert Series and end-of-week celebration Rally in the Alley all provide music to all ages.

There are also opportunities to celebrate history and culture in Hancock County. Visit the Hancock Historical Museum to learn about the history of the area. Different displays showcase the origins of Hancock County, with special exhibits featuring Hancock County conductors of the Underground Railroad, the oil boom of the 1800s, Findlay Glass and more – including a bathtub from the USS Maine, with a very interesting back story.

The Black Heritage Library and Multicultural Center is a Findlay gem. This library and multicultural center is a lending library and teaching museum, housing artifacts and resources about different cultures. The Black Heritage Library and Multicultural Center is also home to the Smithsonian Institute’s Black Wings exhibit, the only library or museum in the world to be awarded so. The Black Wings exhibit features African-American aviators from early pioneers to the esteemed WWII Red Tails Tuskegee Airmen, up to the Space Shuttle Program. The Black Heritage Library and Multicultural Center also frequently hosts events during cultural holidays, like Kwanzaa, Cinco de Mayo and Juneteenth, and are supporters of International Day, which is put on by the University of Findlay. n

E D U C A•T ION Findlay Hancock County A good, solid education is the foundation for a healthy, growing, striving community. Hancock County has a very strong commitment to education. We offer eight public high schools located throughout the county, as well as one public city school district.

Findlay City Schools is the largest district in Hancock County. Other districts range from 250 to 1,500 students. Heritage Christian School is a private school for grades K-12. St. Michael Catholic School and St. Wendelin Catholic School are private schools that provide education for students in grades K-8. Findlay Digital Academy offers students in grades 9-12 with an alternative learning environment. Many schools offer open enrollment.

Millstream Career Center is a career cooperative school that offers hands-on learning and training for high school students. It serves 15 schools with 17 programs. Millstream students obtain skills and certifications that allow them to enter the workforce right out of high school.

Even before our children reach school age, they can attend one of many preschools around Hancock County. We offer many options to make sure your child is ready to enter Kindergarten.

The volunteer spirit is alive and well in Findlay and Hancock County. No matter if your passion is to make the world a better place, help your fellow man or give back any way you can, there are many opportunities right here in our own backyard.

Many of our local churches sponsor mission trips, serve community dinners and provide programs that help those who are not able to provide for themselves. If carpentry is your specialty, you may want to become involved in building a Habitat for Humanity house or volunteer at 50 North to help seniors who are in need. The United Way of Hancock County sponsors days of caring, where groups of people from our community work together to complete projects for businesses and individuals who are either short on time, manpower or skill.

Hancock County is home to a variety of service organizations that support causes right here in our own community and communities across the country and overseas. Altrusa, Zonta, Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions club and many more offer opportunities to get involved and make a difference.

If you are enthusiastic about working with children, we offer opportunities to be a mentor through Children’s Mentoring Connection, or assist with childcare in a variety of capacities. The arts are alive and well in our community and The Arts Partnership and the Marathon Center for the Performing Arts are always looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help at their various events and performances.

Members of our communities are involved in organizations like Focus on Friends, the American Red Cross, Findlay Family YMCA, Salvation Army, Open Arms Domestic Violence Shelter, Hope House Housing Services, NAMI Hancock County, and City Mission of Findlay. They serve a variety of roles, and volunteers with all skill sets are always needed.

The Hancock County Opiate Task Force developed community guidelines that were adopted by city and county government leaders. They show how we can work together to find solutions to the opiate epidemic, offer ways to fight the stigma of substance abuse and ensure that everyone who struggles with a substance use disorder is valued at all levels in our community.
