CHAMBER Welcome

A

s the Executive Director of the Farmville Area Chamber of Commerce, I would like to extend the warmest welcome to anyone reading this community guide. We are excited to showcase our lovely community, our fantastic Chamber members, and all that we have to offer. The Chamber’s mission is to strive to improve the lives of those living and doing business in our community, and we hope this magazine will showcase the abundance of opportunities we have here in our area. We have seen some nice growth over the past few years, and downtown Farmville is the home of some unique boutique shopping, delicious dining and evening entertainment. It is also the home to several events such as the Heart of Virginia Festival and the Virginia Children’s Book Festival, which is the largest book festival for children on the east coast! Farmville still has its small town charm with our Christmas tree lighting and parade, weekend family outdoor movie nights in the summer, and live music on the plaza. We are also very proud of our distinction of being the country’s first two-college town, and our surrounding counties all benefit from the activities and culture that collegiate life brings.

We love that we have several state parks right here in our community so everyone in the neighboring counties – and visitors – can enjoy them. Our area is rich in history as we played a vital role in the end of the Civil War and the start of the civil rights movement. Be sure to visit the RR Moton Museum where everyone can learn about how our community helped shape education as we know it today. Our Chamber is thriving and we recently celebrated our 70th anniversary. We are continually looking for ways to address the needs of our members and community. Please check out our calendar of events on our website or stop by our office. This publication only begins to address all the wonderful highlights Prince Edward, Cumberland, and the surrounding areas offer. Joy Stump Executive Director

O

ur area, known as Virginia’s Heartland, is rich in history that tells a story of courage and perseverance. Located in the Heart of Virginia, the Farmville Area includes the Town of Farmville, the County of Cumberland and the County of Prince Edward. Prince Edward County dates to 1754; Cumberland County to 1749; and the Town of Farmville to 1798. Farmville soon became the center of trade, education, law and finance for the surrounding seven counties, a position it maintains today, as the largest municipality between Richmond and Lynchburg. It is home to many successful businesses, industries, and cultural and educational organizations. Hampden-Sydney College, a selective private four-year college, was founded in 1776; Longwood University, chartered in 1839 as Farmville Female Seminary, was the first state teacher training college in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Patrick Henry, five-time Governor of Virginia, served as Prince Edward’s representative in the Virginia General Assembly. As the county’s representative, he participated with John Randolph in debates over the ratification of the U.S. Constitution. The first call for independence came from Cumberland County; when the certainty of the approaching conflict came, Cumberland led the Colonies in calling for a completely independent American nation. On April 22, 1776, from the balcony of Effingham Tavern, Carter H. Harrison read the committee’s instruction to the county delegates to the state convention: “We therefore, your constituents, instruct you positively to declare for an Independency, that you solemnly adjure any allegiance to His Britannic Majesty and bid him a good night forever …” The Virginia Convention decided to follow Cumberland’s

HISTORY lead, and this resulted in the Virginian Resolutions, which were presented to the Continental Congress and embodied in the Declaration of Independence. The Civil War left its mark on Farmville, with its last major battle at nearby Sailor’s Creek. On April 6, 1876, just three days before the surrender at Appomattox Court House, nearly a quarter of General Lee’s army – more than 7,700 men – were killed, wounded or captured at the Battle of Sailor’s Creek. Lee then retreated directly through the town, and the Confederates crossed and then attempted to burn the railroad’s impressive High Bridge, a 120-foot-high, nearly half-mile-long span across the Appomattox River. The bridge and other sites along Lee’s Retreat are part of the state’s Civil War Trails. Farmville is also home to some key players in the early fight for civil rights. In 1951, in Farmville, Virginia, 16-year-old Barbara Johns bravely organized and inspired her fellow 450 students to walk out of school and protest the overcrowded and inadequate conditions at Prince Edward County’s all-black Robert Russa Moton High School. This strike launched a 13 year struggle for better educational opportunities in Prince Edward County that emblematized the youth-driven efforts for civil rights across the United States. The original court case, Davis v. County School Board of Prince Edward County, that arose from the strike was one of the five cases decided by the Supreme Court in its 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision. It was the only case initiated by students. This citizens’ crusade for equal rights in education drew Martin Luther King Jr. and other national leaders to visit our area. The Robert Russa Moton High School, site of the 1951 student strike, is a National Historic Landmark, a civil rights museum, and the centerpiece of Virginia’s Civil

Rights in Education Heritage Trail, honoring the efforts of local students and citizens who paved the way for integrated public education nationwide. A marker at the county courthouse titled “The Light of Reconciliation,” acknowledges the county’s racial history and makes the promise to prevent any future inequalities from taking place in the county. The story of civil rights in Prince Edward County and Virginia teaches people about the capacity of everyday, local people to use their constitutional rights to create lasting social change. w

We know art is subjective. BUSINESS & Growth

F

armville, Virginia, is centrally located in the Heart of Virginia, just a day’s drive from 76 percent of the United States population. The Farmville area is the primary commerce center for seven counties with a service area of over 150,000. As the home of two outstanding institutions of higher education, Hampden-Sydney College and Longwood University, the community is alive with cultural, commercial and entrepreneurial opportunities. Numerous shopping centers and an historic downtown shopping district offer a retail selection to rival metropolitan areas. With regular additions of new businesses on Main Street and beyond, retail sales in Farmville have increased year over year, topping $358 million in 2017. Overall, business revenues of all types are growing steadily, with an increase of 4.7 percent in 2017. Abundant natural resources offer opportunities for visitors and businesses alike. High Bridge Trail is a major attraction, crossing Main Street in the heart of the historic downtown. The trail boasts the longest recreational bridge in Virginia, providing opportunities for hikers, bikers and horseback riders and the businesses that serve them. Natural resources also support our many agricultural businesses, including wood products and many small local food producers.

Prince Edward County Business Park is home to Southside Virginia YMCA, Lowe’s, Social Security Administration offices and Virginia Department of Transportation district offices. Three of the county’s major manufacturers are also located in the Business Park, including Tri-Boro Shelving and Partitions Corporation and Tri-Boro Rack and Storage are manufacturers of metal shelving, racks and storage units. Paris Ceramics USA, Inc. manufactures highend stone tiles, countertops and specialty decorative stone items, all custom order. The Prince Edward County location is their only warehouse internationally.

Non-manufacturing major employers include:

Farmville Industrial Park is the home of YakAttack, a leader in the kayak fishing industry, that manufactures kayak fishing gear designed and made in the USA.

Prince Edward County is part of the Certified Work-Ready Communities Program. The program is designed to assist an area in developing its workforce pipeline to provide skilled workers for employers. Working toward becoming a certified location, the county is dedicated to investing in this designation, which requires reaching targeted amounts of individuals earning the ACT National Career Readiness Certificate. The county’s certification as a Certified Work-Ready Community, along with the certifications of the individuals in the workforce, will help to attract new industry by showing that the area is ready for business with a skilled workforce. w

J.R. Tharpe Trucking Co., Inc. is a familyowned, local trucking business that serves Virginia, North Carolina, West Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Maryland and has operated for over 45 years, providing contract hauling, front end loader service, and excavator service. Other businesses that are part of the industrial and manufacturing base of the region include CMC Rebar Virginia, which manufactures rebar for the construction industry, and Asal Lumber Company.

armville is not only full of smalltown charm and hospitality, but also arts, culture and entertainment for everyone in your family. The Farmville Area Chamber of Commerce’s online community calendar of events is the perfect place to find out what’s happening in the area.

ARTS & CULTURE The Longwood Center for the Visual Arts is the only museum of its kind, scope and size in the area. The museum is committed to improving the quality of life in the region by providing full access to the visual arts and admission is free for everyone. The LCVA fosters creativity, intellectual curiosity and involvement in the visual arts through its exhibitions, educational programs, permanent collection and volunteer and internship programs. Hampden-Sydney College and Longwood University frequently open their doors to the community for concerts, plays, lectures, public forums, and seminars. The Esther Thomas Atkinson Museum at the college has a permanent exhibition commemorating the history of the college, as well as areas for alternation exhibitions. The Robert Russa Moton Museum housed in the former Robert Russa Moton High School, now a National Historic Landmark and museum, is the student birthplace of America’s Civil Rights Revolution. Visit the museum to learn about how 16-year-old Barbara Johns led the 1951 Moton Student Strike that produced three-fourths of the plaintiffs in Brown v. Board of Education (1954), the landmark Supreme Court decision desegregating U.S. schools. The museum is free and open to the public. Guided tours are available. The Illyria Theatre Company, a nonprofit professional theater, seeks to kindle the imagination and connect to the human spirit by bringing theater to life, and bringing life to the theater. Find out about their next show on their site, www.illyriatheatrecompany. com. 14

The Waterworks Players community theater on Industrial Park Road in Farmville brings live theater to area residents and provides an outlet for actors, singers, designers and technicians throughout the Heart of Virginia. For showtimes and ticket information, call (434) 392-3452. Red Door 104 is a unique learning center designed to foster an appreciation of art for students ages 4 and up. and Microsoft Office word-processing on public computers at the library. Farmville is also fortunate to have Sunchase Cinema 8 for the latest movies and Main Street Lanes for family and league bowling.

EVENTS Cumberland County holds Cumberland’s Patriot’s Day at the county’s courthouse on the third Saturday of April and includes food, craft vendors, children’s games, bounce houses and live music. On the first Saturday in May, the streets of Farmville are lined up with art, crafts, food and an assortment of other vendors for the Heart of Virginia Festival. The festival, which was founded in 1979, is a day-long event in downtown Farmville. RECREATION THE GREAT OUTDOORS

hether it’s the unique bridge that suspends hundreds of feet in the air, ample fishing and hiking opportunities or numerous workout class options, Farmville has no shortage of recreation opportunities.

The Sandy River Reservoir, spanning 740 acres and just a short drive from Farmville, offers a wealth of fishing and boating opportunities. Largemouth bass, black crappie, redear sunfish, bluegill, chain pickerel and catfish can be found at this reservoir.

Visitors and residents can take full advantage of options that are both low in cost and high in fun.

The reservoir is relatively new, only having opened for fishing since 1996. However, it’s quickly gaining popularity as a first-stop fishing destination.

PARKS The region has a number of memorable state parks. Historic Twin Lakes State Park is 548-acres and includes a 33-site campground and 11 climate-controlled cabins for overnight stays. There’s also swimming, fishing, hiking, boating and lakeside picnicking. The Cedar Crest Conference Center on Prince Edward Lake is a great site for weddings, family gatherings, retreats and business meetings. There are also numerous education programs that include nature workshops for children and an annual Lighting of the Lake luminary to honor those impacted by Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Visit the park at 788 Twin Lakes Rd., Green Bay, Virginia. To learn more, call (434) 392‑3435 or visit www.dcr.virginia.gov/ state-parks/twin-lakes#general_information. Sailor Creek Battlefield State Park offers a crash course in Civil War History. The park is home to the Battles of Sailor's Creek, which was one of the last battles before General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House. The visitor center offers a neat look at relics of the Civil War, as well as opportunities to walk or drive through portions of the 34-acre park. Tour the Overton-Hillsman House, which served as a hospital during and after the war. Visit the park at 6541 Saylers Creek Road, Rice, Virginia. To learn more, call (804) 561‑7510 or visit www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/sailorscreek#general_information, Bear Creek Lake State Park, with a 40-acre lake and access to the 16,000-acre Cumberland State Forest, offers something for everyone. The park has a boat launch, fishing pier, boat rentals, a swimming beach as well as cabins, camping, picnicking, an archery range and playgrounds. There’s also a 14-mile Cumberland Multi-use Trail, available for hiking, biking and horseback riding. Visit the park at 22 Bear Creek Lake Road, Cumberland, Virginia. To learn more, call 16

The three-mile bridge, more than 2,400 feet long and suspended 125 feet in the air above the Appomattox River, is part of a 31.2-mile trail. The High Bridge Trail State Park encompasses Cumberland and Prince Edward counties.

Another excellent fishing site is Briery Creek Lake, a 845-acre property in Prince Edward County stocked with Florida strain largemouth bass, northern strain largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish (also known as shellcrackers), channel catfish and crappie. Visitors may see timber in the floodplain that was left standing or felled, which, according to Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, allows for an abundance of fish habitat.

Take a break from the trail by visiting the Farmville downtown Main Street plaza or stopping at Third Street Brewery.

The area is also home to diverse wildlife population, including turkeys, deer, quail, rabbits, beavers and muskrats.

Park Manager Daniel Jordan said the trail is host to numerous athletic events, such as the Farmville Downtown Partnership historic halfmarathon and 5K, Cumberland Foundation 5K and numerous 50K races for more challenging athletic events. The Time Trials Bike Race also comes each July. There are also hiking trails in the park, and the 31-mile trail is available for horseback riding.

To further explore the great outdoors, there’s no better stop than Appomattox River Company the downtown Farmville area to stock up on what you need.

The park also offers accessibility tours for those who may have mobility challenges. There is no charge for accessibility services. The park is also home to the Firefly Festival, held every summer when fireflies are the most visible. This year’s festival will take place June 7-8. Families can set up a tent and camp out on the bridge June 21-22. There are also frequent educational program and junior ranger day camps.

Appomattox River Company sells kayaks, paddles, paddle boats and kayaks for fishing, and drysuits to wear in cold weather. The company ships equipment all across the country. Check out their Virginia LOVE sign at the side of the building, made entirely from kayaks. It only takes a short drive to Rice in order to experience the adventure of a lifetime. That’s

While the trail can be accessed in downtown Farmville, entrances closest to the bridge can be accessed at the park’s Camp Paradise entrance, located off Aspen Hill Road in Rice, or at 555 River Road in Farmville. EDUCATION LONGWOOD UNIVERSITY Longwood University is one of America’s hundred-oldest colleges and universities, and Virginia’s third-oldest public institution, following only William & Mary and the University of Virginia. A public liberal arts university of about 5,000 students, Longwood has a distinctive mission: to shape citizenleaders. Routinely ranked in the top 10 regional public universities by U.S. News & World Report, Longwood has grown from its roots as a small all-women college focused on teacher preparation into a full-scale university widely recognized for its focus on undergraduate research opportunities, forward-thinking Civitae Core Curriculum and student access to faculty. The historic 60-acre central campus in downtown Farmville has witnessed some of the most critical events in American history. The final hours of the Civil War played out along High Street on the north end of campus, and in 1951, the south end of campus witnessed the student-led birth of the modern civil rights movement, with the student strike at the then all-black Moton School. Today, Moton 18

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY COLLEGE

Longwood is known for its citizen-leadership mission, camaraderie, and small class sizes – it has the highest percentage of courses taught by full-time faculty of any public university in Virginia. Its students are famous for their enthusiastic extracurricular involvement. A member of the Big South conference, Longwood is among the 50 oldest institutions in the United States that participate in NCAA Division I athletics.

Longwood students are known for their commitment to leadership. Students participate in more than 200 campus organizations, including thriving art and service organizations, and more than 650 hold a primary leadership position in an organization. Most students live on campus or very close by, and an ongoing commitment to the power and value of a residential liberal arts education has led to two new residence halls constructed in the last five years, with additional large-scale renovation projects ongoing.

The 10th-oldest institution of higher education in the United States, Hampden-Sydney College is a private liberal arts college on a beautiful 1,300-acre campus in Southside Virginia. As one of the nation’s three remaining all-male colleges, Hampden-Sydney is committed to its founding mission “to form good men and good citizens in an atmosphere of sound learning.”

In 2016, the campus community hosted the only vice presidential debate of the general election between Sen. Tim Kaine and thenGov. Mike Pence. The unprecedented media coverage of the debate earned the university more than $80 million worth of publicity, as dozens of national outlets highlighted campus,

BEAR CREEK ACADEMY Bear Creek Academy is a private special education day school serving students in grades 6-12. The academic program centers on strengthening students’ academic foundations by filling in the missing gaps in learning from previous years and then building a history of academic success upon that newly solidified foundation. With small class sizes and the opportunity to develop strong interpersonal relationships between teacher and student, students acquire confidence in their ability to learn and begin to realize how valuable an education is for their future. Education does not only include the student and the teacher but each member of the school, family and members of the community. Bear Creek Academy actively

collaborates with community organizations to educate and equip students with practical means to improve their lives. Accountability, responsibility, sharing and mutual respect are essential components of relationships with the staff and community, and students can be inspired to follow their own dreams to do service in the global community. To address the additional needs of students who have behavioral difficulties, the school’s therapeutic advocates work in tandem with teachers in the classroom to facilitate problem-solving, management of

emotions and learning social skills. Through a combination of individual support and a positive peer culture, students learn to cope with emotions and are encouraged to selfmonitor their own behaviors. Alternative education classes and special groups teach skills in identifying and communicating feelings. In addition, students with attention deficits and other behavioral issues are taught strategies to help them maintain focus and/or manage their emotions and behaviors, which positively impacts their ability to learn and retain academic knowledge. w

FARMVILLE AREA Senior Services

S

enior citizens in the Farmville area are well served by multiple organizations, whether they are living at a retirement community or receiving support so they can live independently.

THE WOODLAND Community leaders, led by a local doctor who was looking for nursing care for his aging mother, in 1970 founded the facility that would become The Woodland, a dynamic retirement neighborhood that is still locally owned and operated. The Woodland has grown quite a bit over almost 50 years, from a 60-bed nursing facility to a senior care community that provides a continuum of care including independent living cottages, independent assisted-living, and long-term care, as well as a rehabilitation and a wellness center. What hasn’t changed is the deep roots The Woodland has in the Farmville region. The high level of skilled professional care is

complemented by the variety of recreational activities and programs available in the neighborhood and the community. For more information, visit www.thewoodlandinc.com.

PIEDMONT SENIOR RESOURCES Farmville-area senior citizens who want to live independently and safely in their own homes have a friend in Piedmont Senior Resources Area Agency on Aging. The services provided by Piedmont Senior Resources include health and nutrition services, caregiver support, non-emergency medical transport, home-delivered meals, legal services, in-home services and Medicare and insurance guidance.
