HISTORY

Looking Back to the Past Elk City has always been a shining example of “Western Hospitality.” Elk City’s geographic location has been one of the main reasons for its colorful and historic past. Major highways now meet where once a number of important routes passed; the most famous being the “Great Western or Dodge City Cattle Trail.” Later, the cattle trails were replaced by highways, and Elk City remained in the center of things by being located in the center of the “Mother Road” Route 66, the major east-west thoroughfare across the United States.

Elk City became a town site in 1901 as a shipping center at the end of Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf Railway Line that was originally called Crowe.

However, when the brewery didn’t materialize, the name “Elk City” was adopted. Elk City was named for Elk Creek, which runs through the city. The creek is named after Indian Chief Elk River.

While its locations made it an ideal transportation hub, Elk City also has strong ties to agriculture with beef and dairy cattle production. Cotton, alfalfa, wheat and other grains are also produced.

In 1903, Charles Gould ended his first geological survey of the Anadarko Basin. More than any other industry, oil and gas have shaped and reshaped Elk City’s history. w

Ideally situated in the heart of the western Oklahoma’s Anadarko Basin, Elk City has most certainly earned its nickname of “Natural Gas Capital of the World.” Many national and international drilling and gas service companies are represented in Elk City.

In an extremely competitive industrial environment, Elk City is perfectly poised for establishing and expanding a wide range of businesses. Thanks to its location at the intersection of Interstate 40 and State Highway 34, firms in Elk City have access to either coast within a 24-hour period, as well as the more than 30,000 consumers traveling through Elk City each day along I-40.

GROUND TRANSPORTATION Elk City is on I-40 and Route 66, which runs through the community and is intersected by State Highway 6 and State Highway 34.

BUS LINES Founded in 1914, Greyhound Lines, Inc. is the largest provider of intercity bus transportation, serving 2,400 destinations across North America with a modern, environmentally friendly fleet. It has become an American icon, providing safe, enjoyable and affordable travel to nearly 16 million passengers each year in the United States and Canada. The Greyhound running dog is one of the most-recognzed brands in the world.

RAIL LINES Elk City is linked to 170,000 miles of national railway networks by subsidiaries of Farmrail System, Inc., which provide asneeded switching service in support of local industry. The principal commodities handled by Farmrail are wheat, crushed and processed gypsum, feed ingredients and oil field drilling supplies, fertilizers and farm machinery.

The Oklahoma City Will Rogers World Airport/Wiley Post International Airport is 112 miles east of Elk City and sits on just more than 8,000 acres of land and serves seven major airlines, two regional airlines and a growing number of charter services. This figure alone makes Will Rogers World Airport one of the 10 largest airports in the country in land area.

WATER TRANSPORTATION The closest place for water transportation is the Port of Catoosa. It is 236 miles from Elk City and has a channel depth of nine feet with a total lift of 420 feet throuth eighteen locks and dams, thirteen in Arkansas and five in Oklahoma. Each lock chamber is 110 feet wide and 660 feet long. w

TOURISM & OUTDOOR LIFE Things to See & Do

Elk City has many recreational activities and tourist destinations – both indoors and out – to satisfy any taste. Outdoor fun includes hiking, biking and horseback riding along with fishing, boating and waterskiing; while indoor fun can be had at any number of museums in the area.

The parks department also encourages residents to enjoy the outdoors by maintaining six smaller parks (Kiwanis, Rotary, Lions, Jaycee, Peeler and Lincoln parks) throughout the community, five sports facilities (Red Rock Stadium, Burson Field, Trissell Field, Girls’ Five Plex and Boys’ Five Plex) and Elk City Lake.

LODGING & ATTRACTIONS

The aquatic center, rodeo arena, Red Rock Stadium, skate park and the Centennial Lighthouse provide hours of amusement.

Other amenities such as tennis courts, a sand volleyball court, a walking and jogging trail, Thunder basketball court, a new splash pad, playground and pavilion picnic areas are scattered around Ackley for visitors to enjoy.

When you are ready to hang your hat, Elk City offers everything from the amenities of a hotel or the laid-back atmosphere of an RV park. Elk City, on I-40, meet the needs of the weekend traveler, families and businessmen and women needing a place to call home for a night. All of Elk City’s accommodations are within a short drive to meeting facilities and tourist attractions and offer a variety of price ranges. PARKS The Elk City Parks Department work year-round maintaining and enhancing Elk City’s parks and Elk City Lake. Ackley Park is one of Elk City’s featured attractions. It is home to the Centennial Carousel with its 36 hand-carved wooden horses, Old Town Miniature Golf and the Choctaw Express Miniature Train.

LAKE Elk City Lake is just south of town and includes a 750-acre park along with the 250-acre lake. The City of Elk City runs two fish hatcheries to keep Elk Lake & Ackley Park well-stocked with fish.

Residents enjoy fishing (sauger, large mouth bass, channel catfish, hybrid striper), boating and lakeside picnic areas with barbecue grills. Elk Lake features five camper parking spaces with water and electrical hookups. There is no charge for camping at the lake, but there is a three-night maximum stay policy to allow other campers the opportunity to enjoy the facilities.

MUSEUMS OLD TOWN MUSEUM COMPLEX Nostalgia abounds in a visit to the Old Town Museum where Oklahoma pioneer life is recreated. The complex is the steward for the present generation in preserving those moments of life experienced in settings like the interior of the Rock Bluff School, the Pioneer Chapel and an early-day pioneer doctor’s office. The Beutler Rodeo Hall is a treat in itself featuring rodeo memorabilia from a long line of the nation’s top rodeo stock producers – the Beutlers. Visitors can also enjoy a relaxing stroll around Cowtown watering hole.

NATIONAL ROUTE 66 MUSEUM Route 66 is the most popular highway in the United States. Its path crosses eight states from Chicago to Los Angeles. The National Route 66 Museum focuses on the people who lived, worked and traveled the “Mother Road” and offers visitors a classic walk through all eight states, highlighted by realistic murals and vignettes depicting the eras of the road and the interesting places that made Route 66 so famous. As you’re traveling, you can listen to recorded histories and personal accounts of the road from overhead audio kiosks.

Enjoy an interactive look at the history of transportation. Kids and adults will love taking in the short film on transportation history shown in the Rex Theatre. Enjoy a trip to the drive-in theater and take a seat in the back of a red 1959 Impala to watch clips from old movie greats such as The Blob – complete with drivein speakers attached. It’s a history lesson filled with interactive, hands-on activities.

FARM AND RANCH AND BLACKSMITH MUSEUM The Farm and Ranch Museum, sponsored by the Western Oklahoma Historical Society, celebrates western Oklahoma’s agricultural heritage. The museum features a vast collection of tools that were used in early farm and ranch life. A blacksmith shop and windmill collection are among the exhibits depicting pioneer farmers and ranchers and their contributions to this nation.

Visitors can see amazing displays of anvils, a working table with leg vices, a wagon wheel soaker and three-belt forges. Also displayed are two permanent forges, swage blocks, a cone mandrel and a Little Giant trip hammer.

ARTS & THEATER RED CARPET COMMUNITY THEATRE With over 50 years and more than 196 major productions to its credit, Red Carpet Theatre has truly become Western Oklahoma’s community theatre. The audience reaches out to the Texas Panhandle and surrounding small communities. It is quite typical for the cast to represent four to five communities. The theater actively promotes its projects and credits the past assistance of the Oklahoma Arts Council and Oklahoma Community Theatre Association. EDUCATION Learning to Succeed ELK CITY PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT The accomplishments of the Elk City Public School District are a source of great pride for Elk City and the surrounding community.

The people here strongly value education and support a public system that pursues excellence in all aspects. Over the past two years many improvements have been made; including a new elementary school, state of the art lighting and track at the Big Elk Stadium, new weight training facility, and upgrades to the agriculture farm and horticulture program. The school’s mission is to develop an educational program that will motivate and allow students to identify and achieve their highest potentials in academics, sports, music and the arts. The Elk City School District is comprised of four sites; Elk City High School, Elk City Middle School, Elk City Intermediate School and Elk City Elementary School.

Ready to Serve the Community Elk City’s government, has been recognized numerous times for its original ideas and successful programs, is a city commission-city manager form of government as created by a Charter, duly voted on and adopted by the citizens of Elk City.

Elk City is divided into four wards, which in turn are each represented by one elected commissioner. The commissioner is nominated by wards, and all are elected at large.

Police protection is provided by the Elk City Police Department, which employs more than 20 officers and seven auxiliary officers.

Fire and emergency/rescue services are provided by the Elk City Fire Department, which is composed of both full-time and volunteer workers. Additionally, the department maintains three Class A fire engines, one Class A aerial engine, a rescue unit and tankers for rural fire protection.

Elk City residents have access to 911 service for all emergency calls. w

Believe it or not, the concept of managed health care has been around at least since the Great Depression. Dr. Michael Shadid of Elk City, Oklahoma, created one of the earliest managed care systems in this country in 1929. For years, the doctor had been haunted by the fact that hundreds of farm families scattered throughout the Great Plains country were not getting adequate medical attention. Shadid knew that the only solution to this bitter problem was prepaid group medicine, offering hospital facilities and medical treatment at a price that these none-too-prosperous farmers could afford. In the truest sense, Shadid was a pioneer, for nowhere in America was there a model to guide him in his experiment.

Today, the board of directors, medical staff, administration and employees of Great Plains Regional Medical Center still believe it is imperative to the well-being of the families in western Oklahoma to carry on the mission started by Dr. Shadid.

LOCAL & LOYAL BUSINESSES TWO FRIENDS Glenna Hollis and Kay Farmer didn’t start out as business partners, but as good friends. Country Dove Gifts and Tea Room was the vision of Glenna, and she asked Kay to see the building with her.

The shop opened in 1983 as a gift shop and five years later the tea room was added along with Christian books and bibles. BUILDING TO LAST Hutton, Inc. began business in 1978 under the name of Quad-Co, for its four pieces of equipment. Today it has over 20 employees and multiple pieces of equipment. HISTORY OF PAUL JONES DRUG In 1901, as Elk City was getting started, one of the first establishments was the Hixon Pharmacy. In 1920, Mr. H.G. Hixon sold the store to Mr. and Mrs. H.M. Gregory. The next year they relocated the store to its present-day site.

Mr. and Mrs. H.M. Gregory continued operation of the store until about 1940, when they sold the store to Mr. and Mrs. Ray Seay,

who operated it until a fire destroyed the store and building. Mr. Seay relinquished his lease, and Mr. and Mrs. Gregory rebuilt the store and established the Gregory Drug again. They operated the store until 1950, when they sold the store to Mr. and Mrs. Paul A. Jones. In 1958, he sold an interest to Ivan A. Noakes, another share a few years later to Bryan H. Potter, and in 1966 he sold his remaining interest to two men who continued to operate the store under the name of Paul Jones Drug.

In 1976, Mr. Noakes sold his half to Warren Meader. Mr. Potter sold his interest to Warren and Gina Meader, both pharmacists in 1985. Warren Meador started his career at Paul Jones Drug in 1973. Warren developed a large camera department. Gina Meador began her lengthy career during pharmacy school in 1977 and continues working there today. Rodney Skinner purchased Paul Jones Drug on June 1, 2014 to fulfill his dream of owning his own independent pharmacy.

LOCAL & LOYAL BUSINESSES DAVIS PRINTING COMPANY Printing is more than a business at Davis Printing Company – it’s a family tradition. Ken Davis’ semi-retirement was not in the cards as the boom of the late ’70s and early ’80s made it quite evident that Elk City was in dire need of an additional commercial printing company to meet the demands of the growing population and economy. Ken and his son, Kevin, founded and opened Davis Printing Company on Nov. 10, 1980. The business grew quickly and son, Karsen, joined the firm in 1981. A third generation of the family, Kristopher Davis, is now an active member of the legacy that began in 1948.

The staff is extremely knowledgeable in all phases of the printing business, from idea conception, graphic design to the finished products. The humble beginnings in 1980 are hardly recognizable today in the massive facility that houses new and improved equipment.

CORN BIBLE ACADEMY Corn Bible Academy is a private Christian school for grades 7 - 12. Currently, CBA is located in Corn, OK with plans to move to Clinton, OK directly adjacent to Western Oklahoma Christian School once construction is completed on the new school building.
