Its restaurants, retailers and service providers not only pay taxes and provide services to local residents, but they also contribute to the community by helping with charitable and service projects that bring a sense of well-being to residents. Phil Stumme’s parents started the business after his father, Edmund, saw similar enterprises in San Diego while serving in the Navy. So he returned to Elgin and opened a rental shop with his wife, Frances, initially renting air compressors, bobcats, excavators, heaters and other equipment that contractors, utilities and municipalities needed, but didn’t want to buy. Their biggest customers back in the 1950s and 1960s were the City of Elgin, Northern Illinois Gas and Bell Telephone. “Today a good portion of our income is from party item rentals like tables, chairs, linens, canopies, tents and outdoor amusements like moon walks and bouncy castles. We also do a good business in do-it-yourself equipment for homeowners like tillers, aerators and de-thatchers,” Stumme said. As the economy improves and contractors begin to build homes again, he is also seeing some of the heavy equipment and heaters in more demand, too. While many people drop by the store to pick up their rental items, Stumme said, delivery and set-up is also available in a 15- to 20-mile radius of the store. In addition, A to Z Rentals is available to repair and maintain commercial grade tools owned by others.
“We have been members of the Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce for over 50 years and we are known for sponsoring lots of local sports teams. We believe that a business needs to get their name out there and become part of the community if you want people to support you. And the community does support us. We now have second and third-generation customers walking through our doors,” he added.

Based in South Elgin, Aaroco is a custom programming and software firm that caters to firms of varying sizes, up and down the Fox Valley. Aaroco’s team of custom software developers is able to design and develop the custom software solution that exactly fits each organization’s needs because while there are “off the shelf ” programs available that can do almost everything you need, none of them are an exact fit for most organizations. In addition, Aaroco maintains the software that client firms use day-to-day, builds websites and provides on-site contract programmers who are available for as long as a business needs them. “We work to provide our clients with value every day,” said Aaron Bowgren, president. A native of South Elgin, Bowgren graduated from Larkin High School and earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Northern Illinois University. He opened Aaroco in 2014 after working as a software programmer for several years. Within the next five years Bowgren hopes to have developed a unique software program that Aaroco can market, in addition to providing the services they offer today. “We are keeping our ears open and our heads up for ideas,” he said.
Elgin is fortunate to have a large, independently-owned carpet and flooring store in the community. Abbey Tri-State Carpet and Floor has been located at 1525 Fleetwood Dr. since 1985. It survived the recession that took down many of its competitors by diversifying its customer base and product offerings, according to Rick Lenhardt, retail manager and co-owner with his parents, Andrew and Kathleen Lenhardt. Andrew Lenhardt has been in the flooring business his entire career. He began working for the founder of Tri-State, Ron Benzschawel, six years ago and when Benzschawel decided to retire, the Lenhardt family bought the 8,000-square-foot showroom and attached 12,000-square-foot warehouse. Tri-State carries carpet, hardwood, tile and vinyl flooring and even has a separate showroom dedicated to Karastan carpets. It handles both residential and commercial clients and even installs flooring in new homes for large builders. “What sets us apart from our competition is our knowledge of flooring products and our very long-term, experienced installers,” Lenhardt said. They travel within a 20-mile radius for residential jobs, but will make special arrangements to travel as far as northwest Indiana and southern Wisconsin for large commercial jobs.

She took her first job working in a flower shop at the age of 16, followed by design and management classes. “Before managing a flower shop I would freelance design on occasions. I remember meeting a bride who had little money and had recently lost her mom,” she recalled recently. “With a heavy heart, I designed all of her flowers, trying to make her wedding as beautiful as she could have possibly imagined. Guests at the wedding saw my work and started calling me to design their weddings.” Debi’s Designs Professional Bridal Florist was born. “I have specialized in wedding flowers ever since,” she said. “My husband, Kevin, and I have been blessed. I was able to stay at home and raise my family while we grew our business. I have always wanted to have a shop and be that ‘hometown florist,’ getting to know my customers and be there for them when they need me no matter what occasion it should be – anniversaries, birthdays, proms and at times when sympathy tributes are needed. And I am doing that now from 1145 W. Spring St. in South Elgin.” McGlinn has even been able to support local artists by selling their one-of-a -kind items in her shop. “I put my heart into all my work. I tell my brides that they are all like my girls, especially since I had two boys,” she added.

Kim Gilmore is a graphic artist who started her Elgin-based marketing firm in 1991 and since then has handled jobs as small as producing business cards for small businesses and nonprofits to designing marketing plans for Fortune 500 firms and nationally-known sports teams. In fact, she marketed the Chicago Cubs from 1991 until 1994 and later had the syndicated publishing contract for Major League Baseball for a decade. “I was mentored by Elgin resident and former WGN Radio personality Floyd Brown. He and I worked together on marketing the Kane County Fair for 18 years and he taught me a lot,” Gilmore recalled. Today her boutique marketing firm employs six people who help clients with web and print design, copywriting, social media, marketing campaigns, ad buys, Ad Words and full marketing strategies. Some clients pay a retainer to have Gilmore and her staff at their beck and call, while others engage them one job at a time. She was heavily involved in the Elgin Community College referendum in 2008 that won by 38 votes and allowed ECC to be transformed into the educational facility it is today. “Our office is full of crazy, fun and creative people with lots of energy who are constantly bouncing ideas off of one another in order to bring the freshest and best marketing to our clients,” Gilmore said.

The Helm family has been selling outdoor machinery of one kind or another to the people of Elgin since 1923 when Ralph and Edward Helm opened Helm Brothers, an agricultural machinery dealership that sold International Harvester farm implements and tractors. In 1957, the next generation – Ralph Jr. and Edward’s son-in-law Burt Pearsall – took the business and it became known as Helm and Pearsall. It continued to sell equipment to farmers. But in the early 1970s International Harvester added a garden tractor line and Helm and Pearsall started selling lawn equipment to homeowners, too. The company became known as Ralph Helm Inc. in the late 1970s when Pearsall left to start a different business. By the early 1990s, the third generation had taken over with Ralph III and his business partner, Jim Brandes, buying the business from Ralph Jr. Today Ralph Helm Inc. sells outdoor power equipment such as mowers, tractors, snow blowers, chain saws, hedge trimmers, blowers and de-thatchers with brand names such as Toro, Honda, Stihl, Echo and Cub Cadet at competitive prices from locations in Elgin, Crystal Lake and Elburn. The Elgin store is located at 36W710 Foothill Rd. Unlike their “big box” competitors, Ralph III noted, they also provide service for that machinery, guaranteeing to have equipment repaired within one week if it was purchased from them.
One of Elgin’s newest restaurants is Rubi-o’s Café, located at 1568 Larkin Ave., not far from Larkin High School. This popular breakfast and brunch café opened in March 2016 and has been gaining customers daily as word spreads about its delicious traditional American breakfasts with a Hispanic flair, according to Patricia Rubio, owner with her brother, Manuel. Patricia has 24 years of restaurant management experience and Manuel has always wanted to open a restaurant. So the siblings, along with a friend who has been a chef for 20 years, began looking for a restaurant space to lease, finally settling on the Larkin Avenue location which seats 180 people. “Elgin needed more places that serve breakfast and this is a really nice restaurant with lots of potential, so we decided to open our full-service restaurant here. We also offer express breakfasts and take-out,” Patricia explained. “Many other restaurants have tried this location and failed. But we serve very good food and have a great concept, so people keep coming back. All of our food is fresh and not pre-made. We don’t take shortcuts and we offer the items that our customers have requested like Hawaiian French Toast, crepes, pancakes, waffles, omelets and much more. If an item isn’t selling, we take it off of the menu. We listen to our customers,” she added.
