ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT Positioned for prosperity The Lake County Economic Alliance (LCEA) is positioning Lake County, Indiana, and its 19 municipalities and unincorporated areas as a great place to locate, relocate or expand business operations. Ideally situated in close proximity to the third largest metro economic in the country, Lake County is positioned to capitalize on its location on the right side of Chicago and the south shore of Lake Michigan as well its bounty of transportation assets, convenient to one-third of the U.S. population within one day’s drive.

LCEA, a nonpartisan, nonprofit independent organization, partners with communities and elected officials, chambers of commerce, regional and state economic development groups along with workforce development, colleges and universities to drive the county’s coordinated effort for economic growth. With the support of several other key driving forces, the Crossroads Regional Chamber founded LCEA in 2013 to fulfill a component of their mission to attract and retain quality jobs throughout the county and the whole of northwest Indiana.

Promoting Lake County and all the communities as an ideal location for these industry clusters is a primary role for LCEA. In the first six months of 2019, LCEA participated in more than 20 trades shows, conferences and site consultant gatherings.

LCEA also reaches out on a strategic path meeting independently with developers, brokers, companies and investors throughout the Midwest, noted Karen Lauerman, LCEA president & CEO. “Both the large-scale conferences and the direct one on one meetings put Lake County and available sites in front of hundreds if not thousands, helping us build and foster important relationships with decision makers and advisors,” Lauerman said. “Equally as important, is delivering the friendly business climate, open for business message in our marketing, advertising, public relations and digital media to support the in-person activities.”

In 2018, LCEA responded to 330 companies, site selectors and brokers, not including requests for in addition to general inquiries such as business climate, taxation and community information. This activity has led to 68 projects and developments that are at various stages in the decision-making process as economic development does not happen overnight.

“Lake County’s current target sectors include an emphasis on food processing 6

and distribution, advanced manufacturing, logistics and warehousing, e-commerce fulfillment, call and data centers.

There is also heavy interest in health care/medical, office, retail and hospitality to compliment residential development,” said Don Koliboski, LCEA VP of economic development.

Out of the 330+ leads generated, 60% consist of manufacturing with strong emphasis on food processing/ packaging, automotive and light manufacturing; 30% and growing is transportation/distribution/ logistics. Lake County is in a position to grow this cluster due to e-commerce and shifts in consumer purchasing/spending and delivery expectation.

The medical, office and technology-based industry cluster represents 10% of leads/ projects. Interest by this sector is anticipated to increase due to the success of new data centerrelated announcements and changes in the Indiana tax policy for information technology/ enterprise equipment.

As the two primary communities in the Crossroads Regional Chamber footprint, Merrillville and Crown Point are hubs for economic impact through retail and hospitality (hotels, restaurants and recreation); a great downtown destination in Crown Point and strong larger-scale retail in Merrillville.

LCEA works with Crown Point, Merrillville and 19 other communities facilitating the economic development process with companies and consultants seeking to locate their businesses in Lake County.

Be it locating an ideal site, identifying parcels for development or build to suit facilities, coordinating state and local incentives, public meetings/hearings, media relations, LCEA is able to guide projects from the initial stages to

completion.

Crown Point and Merrillville are proactive communities focused on economic opportunities and enhancing the quality of place as equally important in growing the communities and County as a whole, Lauerman noted.

Crown Point is working several large-scale projects on their portion of I-65 corridor, taking advantage of their logistical location, identifying larger parcels for development and talking with national developers like Opus and NAI Hiffman in attracting further economic development opportunities along the interstate.

Merrillville is home to one of the leading Class A business/certified technology parks, AmeriPlex at the Crossroads anchored by the Purdue Technology Center. With the support of the town and LCEA, Becknell Industrial is erecting 285,000 square-foot speculative building (building without a confirmed tenant) garnering more interest to the marketplace on I-65.

“Overall, the county and communities came together on the economic development front to ensure everyone’s well-being and prosperity. A win for one community is a win for all because it means jobs and investment for residents across the region with the ancillary effect of dining and buying local – a great program that Crossroads Regional Chamber promotes on a daily basis,” Lauerman said.

The area has a lot going for it, she said, it’s the cost of doing business, proximity to Chicago, amenities, skilled and educated workforce, connectivity, transportation infrastructure and an affordable quality of life.

Rails For longer trips, Amtrak stations are located in nearby Dyer and Hammond, Indiana, and Homewood, Illinois. The Dyer station operates on The Cardinal line and The Hoosier State line. The Cardinal will take riders from Chicago to New York with stops in Indianapolis, Cincinnati and Washington, D.C. The Hoosier State line runs daily between Indianapolis and Chicago. From the Hammond station, travelers can access three Michigan services lines, and the Homewood station connects riders to the City of New Orleans line with a stop in Memphis along the way. Many of the stops along these lines also offer connections to other Amtrak lines that will take passengers all throughout the country.

This location, along with easy access to U.S. 30 and Interstate 65, makes traveling to Chicago for business or pleasure a quick and easy trip. It’s a perfect location for those who want a more suburban lifestyle than that of downtown Chicago but want to be close enough to benefit from all of the economic and cultural opportunities of the city.

Senior residents will find many programs and services catered just to their needs.

There are several excellent assisted living and retirement communities in the area with varying levels of care to fit each resident’s needs. In addition, the parks departments host many classes and programs for seniors such as afternoon movies, fitness classes, dinner and entertainment nights and art classes.

The Crown Point planning department also recently became the first in the area to partner with a federal Senior Community Service Employment Program. The program aims to help place seniors in part-time jobs to earn money and learn new skills.

TOURISM Parks There are 19 public parks in Crown Point and 15 in Merrillville that are great sources of outdoor family fun. Parks include a municipal pool, skate park, and ice rink. One of the largest area parks is Hidden Lake Park. The park is open 365 days a year and provides playgrounds, paddleboats, sledding, shelters, softball fields and open, natural areas.

Lake County Fair For more than 150 years, the Lake County Agricultural Society, Inc. has presented the Lake County Fair as a source of great family fun, entertainment and agricultural awareness. Deep River Water Park Deep River Water Park is a family water park on Route 30 in Merrillville that is one of the largest and most popular water parks in the area. With lazy rivers, water slides, speed slides, beach volleyball, water wars and a play zone, Deep River Water Park is “simply splashtastic!”

Gabis Arboretum at Purdue Northwest Formerly known as Taltree Arboretum & Gardens, Gabis Arboretum at Purdue Northwest is a 300-acre, dog-friendly oak preserve of formal gardens, woodlands, wetlands and prairies that includes more than 6 miles of hiking trails. The arboretum is open year-round. Themed displays include the Hitz Family Rose Garden, Native Plant Garden, Oak Islands, the Railway Garden and the new Children’s Adventure Garden. The arboretum on the Purdue Northwest campus is south of U.S. 30 between Merrillville and Valparaiso.

Fair Oaks Farms The Adventure is Growing! Fair Oaks Farms is the premier agritourism destination located in Northwest Indiana, right off I65 on exit 16
