T

he Greater Cleveland Chamber of Commerce is all about our member businesses and, in general, our community. This directory and our Chamber website are intended to provide you with the latest and most accurate information about businesses, churches, city government and schools in our area. Our Chamber members know the importance of supporting our entire community of organizations in the Greater Cleveland area. Their support is significant in helping us accomplish our mission.

The mission of the Greater Cleveland Chamber of Commerce is to market the products and services of our membership; to promote economic development through local and outside shopping; to promote investment in the Cleveland Area Community; and to provide leadership, ideas and action to enhance the quality of life in our community.

As we evaluate 2018, I can say that your Chamber members, Chamber volunteers, Chamber staff and board of directors have been, not only busy, but very dedicated to the mission. All our activities have been focused on making our community grow economically and improving the quality of life in our area. In 2018, we had three successful major community events that engaged our community, businesses and investors.

Our biggest and most well-attended annual banquet was held in February where we recognized Business of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Ambassador of the Year and Citizen of the Year. In June, we held the Outdoor Expo where the community was engaged in fun, shopping and receiving marketing information about our local businesses. In November, Rock-N-Ride Cleveland was attended by many out-of-town bike riders, and patrons got to hear great music all afternoon. The Outdoor Expo and Rock-N-Ride Cleveland were free for the public to attend, thanks to our sponsors. In each of these events, local businesses

who provided sponsorships were advertised to all attendees.

Additionally, the Greater Cleveland Chamber of Commerce has become active in transportation and education issues on a local, regional and state level. Our education committee has engaged with our local school districts, local businesses and state legislators to air funding concerns for public education. They also organized “Principal for a Day” where local business representatives shadowed Cleveland ISD principals for a half-day. Our transportation committee has engaged with City of Cleveland officials, Liberty County officials, Texas Department of Transportation and the Houston Galveston Area Council to make sure that road and highway projects needed in our area get emphasis in the planning and budgeting process.

Your 2019 board of directors and I are excited about the upcoming year. We will continue to make our big events even better. We will also continue the hard work of influencing state and local institutions to ensure that the Greater Cleveland Area is considered and listened to about opportunities and issues that affect our area.

Whether the work is meant to accomplish plain old fun for our community, more business for our members, infrastructure improvements or better funded schools, none of our work is successful without the dedicated engagement of our membership. As your 2019 chairman, the words you will hear from me, repeatedly, are “You get out of your Chamber of Commerce membership what you put into it.”

ABOUT US The Greater Cleveland Chamber of Commerce, originally established in 1935, is a 501 c (6), nonprofit organization for business people designed to advance the interest of its members. Memberships can be deducted as a necessary business expense, but not a charitable donation.

The Chamber is NOT funded by local, state or federal tax dollars. It is funded by memberships, special events, sponsorships and advertising.

BENEFITS OF CHAMBER MEMBERSHIP NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES The GCCC receives 10,000-plus requests for information annually. As a member, your business will be given priority referrals when people ask about your industry.

The Chamber hosts a networking luncheon the first Thursday of each month providing good food and great opportunities to meet fellow members and their guests. Speaker topics are varied and usually center on business, government and community themes.

They are also available in local real estate offices, title companies, city offices, banks and places people are seeking information about Cleveland. Our website features an online version visible to anyone in the world. Our website is clevelandtxchamber.com.

Our up-to-date website lists your business under either product or service category. The site offers Member-to-Member deals, a Hot Deals section and a community calendar available to all for listing any community events. Opportunities include: • Sponsorships to get the name of your business out to your customers.

• Email blasts to our database of sales, special discounts, promotional events and other activities of your business.

• Exposure by name, category and by purchased advertising in the annual Resource Guide. business to display on our Member Marketplace table. Sponsorship opportunities are available as well.

Our semi-annual Bowling Tournament is held in January and July each year. This is a fun evening of social networking. You can be part of a team or just come to be a cheerleader for your favorite team.

The GCCC Ambassadors meet monthly. Ambassadors are structured for members of the Chamber who wish to assist in future growth and retention of membership and marketing opportunities for members.

They are also mentors to new chamber members.

The Annual Awards Banquet is held each January. It’s a celebration of those who have made significant contributions to our chamber and our community during the previous year. Awards presented include Ambassador of the Year, Jean Nobel McAdams Volunteer of the Year, Business of the Year and Alfred Anderson Citizen of the Year. We also recognize the previous chairman of the board and retiring board members.

Taste of Cleveland Business Exposition is held annually in April. Each vendor will offer food samples to individual attendees. This is a “fun with food” event allowing businesses to explain their products and services while attendees are enjoying their food samples.

Our Outdoor EXPO was a great success for 2018. It’s a FREE family fun event held each June. Kid features include “catch and release” fish tank, rock climbing wall, archery for kids, laser target range, BB gun range, bounce houses and much more In 2019, we’re adding a Rattlesnake pit. In addition to a display of vehicles including ATVs. There’s lots of food trucks and a large variety of vendors including guns, crafts and other outdoor fun providers.

Rock-N-Ride Cleveland: This new community event for the Greater Cleveland Area began in 2017. In 2018, we added two bicycle rides.

Almost all the riders expressed their enjoyment and said they would return in 2019 bringing friends. Many gave us tips to increase ridership (i.e. including elevations to attract bicyclists in training for other runs).

They returned to a Music Fest featuring six Texas bands, Cleveland High School Jazz Band, Tarkington 5th Grade Choir, Cleveland Middle School Cheer Leaders and the High Steppers dance team. There is a registration charge for bicyclists, but the Music Fest is free for all attendees.

MARKETING OPPORTUNITIES Our Cleveland Resource Guide is published annually featuring both Chamber members and local non-members businesses. This guide focuses on the attributes of Cleveland as a place to work, shop and live. It is distributed to all Chamber members/advertisers and is sent to anyone requesting information on the Cleveland area. Copies are also placed in

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT RESOURCES The GCCC works closely with the Small Business Development Center and WorkForce Solutions to provide help with business and marketing plans, personnel training and management and other information and advice to develop your business.

Most people use the chamber as their research source when looking for information about the Greater Cleveland Area.

New committees: The Chamber established a transportation committee in 2018. The committee works closely with officials from the City of Cleveland, Liberty County, TxDOT and GHAC to stay on top of solving upcoming transportation issues and keeping current projects on track. The Chamber also established an education committee in 2018. This committee focuses on maintaining communications between schools and businesses. In 2018, we launched our “Principal for a Day” program. We plan to dedicate a Chamber luncheon to teacher recognition in 2019.

HISTORY

In 1854, a church and convent was built by Father Peter La Cour near the town’s present site. The town began forming in 1878 when Charles Lander Cleveland, a local judge, donated 63.6 acres of land to the Houston East & West Texas Railway (now part of the Union Pacific Railroad) for use as a stop, requesting that the town be named for him. Since 1900, Cleveland has served as the junction of this line and the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe (now the BNSF Railway). The town was incorporated in 1935.

The forests around Cleveland, including Sam Houston National Forest (located just to its north) are a resort for many inhabitants of the Houston area, who come to camp, hike, hunt and fish. Cleveland has several historic sites and public recreational facilities, including three parks and the new municipal park with baseball fields. The Austin Memorial Library Center offers a wide range of services to the community. The Texan Theater, Dairy Days annual livestock show and rodeo, Cleveland Community Chorus concerts, July 4 celebration, Halloween Treat Street and Hometown Christmas provide entertainment and celebratory activities to the surrounding area.

GOVERNMENT

Cleveland operates under the council-manager form of government.

Under this system, the mayor and five council members appoint the city manager who acts as the chief executive officer of the government.

The city manager carries out policy and administers city programs. All department heads, including the city attorney, police chief and fire chief, are ultimately responsible to the city manager. All city council positions are officially nonpartisan.

The major route traveling through Cleveland is U.S. Highway 59, also known as Interstate Highway 69, running directionally north and south.

State Highway 105 running directionally east and west crosses I-69 in Cleveland.

AIRPORTS

Cleveland Municipal Airport has recently renovated with the addition of many new hangers and is located just east of town. Bush International Airport, a major Texas airport, is 34 miles to the south.

CITY OF CLEVELAND ECONOMIC HIGHLIGHTS • Located approximately 40 miles northeast of Houston and 22 miles east of Conroe • Situated at Interstate Highway 69 (the International Freeway) and State Highway 105 • Traffic counts exceed 34,000 cars per day on Interstate Highway 69 • Retail Trade Area population of 105,152 • Grand Oaks Reserve is a 600-acre mixed-use development that began building in late 2017. Model homes are now on sale. It will include a golf course, condominiums, apartments, parks singlefamily homes and a country club. Commercial development has begun in front along Highway 105.

• McKinley Development is developing a 122-acre industrial warehouse development at Highway 105 & Fostoria Road.
