Welcome to Clarkston! On behalf of the Clarkston Area Chamber of Commerce, I would like to welcome you to our town. Clarkston is an outstanding place to live, work, and grow a business. Clarkston is a great town with a big heart and plenty of opportunities. I am excited and honored to be serving the Clarkston community as the President of the Clarkston Area Chamber of Commerce for 2020. I would like to thank our 2018 and 2019 President Emily Ford for her leadership, structure, and dedication to the Clarkston Area Chamber of Commerce. I also would like to welcome our new Executive Director Shaun Hayes who joined us in the spring of last year. Our board of directors have a strong foundation and in collaboration with our excellent office staff and just over 500 members, we are advocating to advance the civic, commercial and industrial general interest and well-being in the Clarkston community. Our mission at the Clarkston Area Chamber of Commerce is to cultivate business opportunities and relationships for

To merge generational businesses, in 2015 the Young Professionals Network was established. CHAMBER CONNECTION

Bringing the business community and residents together is one of the primary goals of the Clarkston Area Chamber of Commerce, which organizes many of the most popular events in town each year. Nearly 600 business owners, professionals, service organizations and others who do business in the area are members of the Chamber, which serves the Village of Clarkston along with the townships of Independence and Springfield. “Our goal is to promote and enhance economic growth in the Clarkston area and find ways to bring the community together,” said Chamber Executive Director Shaun Hayes. “By hosting these events, we can help our members connect with residents and each other, while helping the community as a whole.” The most popular event is the Taste of Clarkston, which takes place in late September, drawing more than 18,000 from the area. In 2019, 26 restaurants and more than 40

holiday shopping from over 40 vendors. It includes free family-friendly activities such as s’more roasting, horse drawn wagon rides, free hot cocoa, caroling and food trucks. • Food Truck Rally, an early summer gathering that includes more than a dozen food trucks, live music, children’s activities, a beer tent with local brews, and much more.

“These events give our members a chance to connect with residents who may not normally be involved with the Chamber,” Hayes said. Each February, the Chamber organizes the Women in Business event. In 2019, the Chamber brought in four female business leaders to speak instead of the typical one main speaker, which led to one of the biggest turnouts the event has ever seen. For members, the Chamber is incentivizing them to attend the monthly Business Over Breakfast events by including the cost with each membership. “It’s important that we provide more opportunities to get involved with us and meet one another,” Hayes said. “Offering these events at no additional cost really encourages continual participation throughout the year.” n

• The Movies in the Park Series, which was offered for the first time in 2019 thanks to the Chamber’s partnership with Independence Parks and Rec and Independence Television. The movies are shown in different locations around Clarkston and Independence Township. • The Concerts in the Park series at Depot Park, which has been taking place for 40 years. Local groups open for the headliners at six concerts in June and July each year. • The Holiday Market, held in the newly renovated Brady Lodge in Bay Court Park. t’s tough for a school district to keep pace with all the changes in the business world, in academia and in technology. But the Clarkston Community School district is ready for the challenge, providing a well-rounded education to more than 7,000 students and preparing students for future careers that might not even exist right now. For example, the district recently introduced its visionary strategic plan “Clarkston 2025,” a six-year roadmap of measurable objectives, focusing on four pillars of excellence: • Whole person development • Foundational & academic skills • Student-focused learning • Future pathways “Our vision for this district is to continue leading the way in academic excellence with strong curriculum programming you can’t get anywhere else, and guide our school district forward with a steady focus on doing what’s best for kids,” said Shawn Ryan, who has been superintendent of Clarkston Community Schools since 2018. Ryan started his career with the district in 1996. The district has seven elementary schools for kindergarten through fifth grade, one middle school serving grades 6-7, a junior high for grades 8-9, and Clarkston High School, which includes students in grades 10-12. In addition, there is an Early Childhood Center serving children ages 3-5, and an alternative high school/community education facility. The district has made it a priority to keep its campuses upto-date, assisted by a $76 million bond issue that was approved

by voters in 2016 for safety and technology upgrades. Academic success is apparent throughout the district, as six of the schools have earned Michigan Exemplary Blue Ribbon honors. Other notable district achievements include: • A class size average of 21 students in K-5 (among the lowest in the county), which provides an ideal learning environment. • 16 Advanced Placement classes at the high school, with about 380 taking AP tests and 77% scoring a “3” or higher. Of them, 21 were named AP Scholars. • 3 National Merit Scholarship semifinalists for 2020. • 31 International Baccalaureate Diplomas awarded in 2019. • A graduation rate of 96.3% for the Class of 2019, with students enrolling at 88 colleges and universities across the country. • 30 varsity high school sports and recognition as one of the 10 best school districts for athletes in America (according to Niche.com). • 39 campus clubs offered at CHS. Also, the district has forged notable partnerships with higher education institutions and the business community, resulting in two on-campus health centers in cooperation with Clarkston Medical Group and 12 University of MichiganFlint courses offered on-site through the Dual Enrollment

Educational Partnership program. Other school districts that serve the area surrounding Clarkston include: Brandon School District, which has an early childhood/ preschool location, two elementary schools, one middle school, one high school and one virtual school. Holly Area Schools, which has four elementary schools, one middle school and one high school, as well as the Karl Richter campus. The district has the state’s first Leader in Me middle school, as well as the same program at Holly Elementary. It also offers the award-winning LIFT program, which supports peers with Autism. Oakland Christian School provides an alternative to public schools and helps students become well-rounded individuals. The school offers 33 AP courses, six honors classes, STEM courses for middle and high school students and the opportunity to learn Spanish in elementary school. Visual arts, music, drama and athletics complement students’ experience. There are several options for younger students in the area: • Montessori School of Clarkston helps students develop academically, socially and emotionally, offering threeand five-day programs, as well as before- and after-care options. • Heartfelt Impressions Learning Centers in Clarkston provides pre-kindergarten educational programs, including for infants and toddlers. It also offers a school age care program, which spans kindergarten through fifth grade.

larkston residents are fortunate to have plenty of health care options, especially two comprehensive hospitals close to home – McLaren Clarkston and St. Joseph’s Oakland. MCLAREN CLARKSTON The campus for McLaren Clarkston is on 95 acres in northern Oakland County, and includes a freestanding emergency department, ambulatory surgery center, wound center, imaging services, the only accredited sleep center in Clarkston, lab, pharmacy services, home health services, medical equipment and numerous physician offices. McLaren is part of a system that includes 14 hospitals and Michigan’s largest network of cancer centers and providers. Here is a look at some of the types of care McLaren Clarkston provides:

• Cancer Center: A 42,000-square-foot freestanding cancer center offers medical and radiation oncology services as part of the Karmanos Cancer Institute network of cancer centers and a 5-acre Garden of Healing and Renewal. Also, McLaren Clarkston now offers lung cancer screenings. This test is a low-dose CT screening and is utilized with those patients who meet specific criteria, including an extensive history of smoking. • Physical Therapy and Sports Center: The state-of-the-art facility has a highly trained and caring staff that provides comprehensive therapy services for people of all ages recovering from a variety of medical conditions. “In addition, our center also serves those who are seeking to maintain or improve their overall health and fitness,” Miller said. “Part of the McLaren Oakland rehabilitation

• Breast Imaging Center: It is the only Breast Imaging Center of Excellence in Clarkston, which means the imaging services are fully accredited in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided breast biopsy. “In addition, we now offer 3D mammography,” said Kris Miller, spokesperson for McLaren Clarkston. “Studies show that 3D technology improves detection of breast cancers and has a significant reduction in callback rates. This is a nice feature for people who are very sick and would rather wait in the comfort of their home than in the waiting room. Patients can register online at mclaren.org/clarkstonER. • Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Shivajee Nallamothu has joined McLaren as an employed orthopedic surgeon. Dr. Nallamothu is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in several areas, including arthritis, joint replacements, sports injuries and orthopedic trauma. ST. JOSEPH MERCY OAKLAND St. Joseph Mercy Oakland, on Woodward Avenue in Pontiac, has been a health care leader in Oakland County for more than 90 years. It is a member of Saint Joseph Mercy Health System, a subsidiary of Trinity Health, one of the largest Catholic health care systems in the country. oth Clarkston and Independence Township have been making plenty of news lately with business and infrastructure improvements. Here is a look at each area:

CLARKSTON In the heart of Independence Township lies the small, quaint City of the Village of Clarkston. Only about a half-square mile in size, the city has approximately 950 residents living in 450 homes. Many of these homes are located in a national historic district, designed to ensure that the history behind the village is protected for the benefit and enjoyment of future generations. Less than a handful of vacant lots remain in the city. The downtown area of Clarkston is also home to approximately 65 businesses, ranging from small startup businesses to nationally recognized restaurants. The last year has been a busy one for the municipal operations of the city. “Just because we are an established

historic community with few growth opportunities doesn’t mean we’re not growing,” said City Manager Jonathan Smith. “We’re continuously looking for new and innovative ways of supporting our residents and business owners, without resorting to tax increases.” Last year, for example, the city converted one of its parking lots to paid parking for the first time, encouraging parking space turnover to help the businesses while at the same time creating a new revenue stream for the city. Now, just over a year later, that revenue has already enabled road paving, sidewalk replacement and parking lot maintenance projects with no special assessments to the residents or business owners. Depot Park is another example of growth within the city. The already popular park is becoming even more popular thanks to new playground equipment, new landscaping and plans for new pathways, a renovated gazebo and an all-new bandshell to make the summer Concerts in the Park series

even more successful. Ultimately, a boardwalk meandering through the park’s wetlands is in the plan. All of these improvements are being funded through alternative, nontax means, such as private fund-raising and in-kind service donations and grants. A longstanding challenge to the city has been how to tackle a much-needed renovation and expansion of the city hall building, built in the 1970s and not upgraded. The city council meeting room was too small, offsite storage was necessary, there was no front desk security, the roof leaked and the walls were rotting. Then the city partnered with a local builder to sponsor a community project, a modern adaptation of the historic barn raisings where the community pulls together to complete the project at significantly reduced costs. A local architect, for example, cut his fees by one third. A local carpenter built the framework for the building addition with similar cost reductions. A local lighting supplier provided virtually all new lighting for the building at no cost to the city. The Building Trades Program at Clarkston High School is providing free labor, while students gain invaluable experience working on the project. The community project approach has not only saved the city tens of thousands of dollars, but it also has made the project viable where previous attempts failed. The City of the Village of Clarkston is a unique and special place. While physically expanding the city is not

possible, it continues to grow and improve in other ways. The quality of life has never been better. INDEPENDENCE TOWNSHIP Independence Township has the best of everything – from country settings with big acreage residential lots, to beautiful groomed neighborhoods and big city amenities – as well as three challenging golf courses, a downhill ski resort, the DTE Energy Music Theater, beautiful lakes, great shopping, medical facilities, a multitude of parks and nature areas and access to I-75 and two airports. Here is a look at some of the major activities and accomplishments in the township: Infrastructure • A complete rebuild of Sashabaw Road between I-75 to Clarkston Road widened Sashabaw to five lanes with water, sewer, gas and safety path. Goal is to facilitate getting DTE Music Theater patrons into and out of the facility with greater ease, making life for residents less cumbersome on concert nights. • Residents approved a joint partnership with the Road Commission for Oakland County for a property tax increase solely dedicated for township road improvements. Goal is to improve the road system within the community by 2022 making Independence more marketable for potential residential and commercial growth.

BUSINESS • The township is also committing millions of dollars to improve water and sanitary systems to ensure safe drinking water for residents and environmental integrity within its waste facilities. RESIDENTIAL • Eagle Ridge on Maybee Road is a 230-unit residential project. Phase II of the project will add 49 residential units. • Encore at Deerhill at Dixie and I-75 is a 92-unit singlefamily community. This for-lease project offers an alternative for active adults who are looking to downsize. • Steeple Chase on Mann Road is a 240-planned for-lease project that will offer single-family homes to folks of all ages. An early 2020 groundbreaking is anticipated.. COMMERCIAL • Alex’s Gourmet Market at White Lake and Andersonville roads will offer a unique blend of services to residents including 24-hour food service, prepared foods, banquet center, Zingerman’s Coffee House and a fueling station. • A new senior assisted living complex will be built on Sashabaw Road across from the DTE Music Theater. Developed by KIRCO Manix, this 148-bed, 175,000-square-foot complex will offer independent, assisted and memory care services for aging residents.

• MSU Credit Union on Sashabaw Road is an approved project slated to break ground late 2019/early 2020. • Comfort Inn Hotel will be be built on Sashabaw Road at the I-75 exit ramp. Groundbreaking is planned for early 2020. RECREATIONAL • Clintonville Safety Path provides the link between pathways from the Waterford border to Clarkston Road. Asphalt and boardwalk safety paths were constructed along Clintonville Road between Waldon and Maybee, traversing over nearly a mile of wetlands. • Sashabaw Safety Path ties together the north and south entrances to Independence Oaks County Park. It is a joint project with the township and the Oakland County Parks Team. • The Renee Przybylski Memorial Spray Park at Clintonwood Park opened in 2019. The new spray feature replaced an aging play area and is a favorite for kids of all ages. • The Miracle League of North Oakland is a new adaptive ball diamond at Friendship Park serving children with special needs. Independence and Orion townships partnered to provide a facility for children who wouldn’t normally get a chance to participate in team sporting activities. n

f someone wanted to design the ideal community, some of the features might include an idyllic downtown, variety of housing styles, suburban peace and quiet and access to nearby lakes. Remarkably, Clarkston has all of that and more. As a result, the Clarkston real estate market is active and ready to accommodate a variety of needs and interests, whether young singles and families or older residents who are downsizing. “Clarkston is predominantly a family community, and many live in the area because of the excellent school district,” said Emily Ford, associate broker at Morgan & Milzow Realtors and 2019 President of the Clarkston Area Chamber of Commerce. Also, more residents who are retired or close to it are deciding to downsize, with some even moving back to Clarkston from Arizona or Florida – or buying a second home – to be near family, Ford said. The downsizing trend has increased interest in condominiums, including those near downtown. “We are fortunate to have an awesome downtown,” Ford said. “It gives people a Mayberry feeling, and you don’t get that in other places.” The variety of styles in single-family homes also sets Clarkston apart from other communities. “We’re in a very eclectic area,” Ford said. “There are very few houses that are built just like another. That’s really cool about the Clarkston area. People appreciate that.” The variety is a byproduct of Clarkston’s slow, tempered

housing growth over the years. An example of that type of growth is the steady turnover from cottages to year-round homes on area lakes, which have become a much sought-after place to live. “There are a lot of recreational possibilities at lakes and parks as well as a lot of social opportunities with our many community events, restaurants and shops,” Ford said. “It’s no wonder so many have lived here all of their lives and others who grew up here come back as adults.” For those who prefer newly built homes, there are a few options in the area: • Maple Grange by Castlewood Custom Homes, Inc. is the newest subdivision in North Oakland County, offering country and traditional styled homes. There will be 23 one-acre homes built on the 44-acre site off Interstate 75.

rom a quiet picnic in the park to an intense concert at one of the country’s most popular amphitheaters, residents and visitors will enjoy a variety of entertainment in the Clarkston area. PARKS & RECREATION There are 227 acres of parkland in five locations that are run by the Independence Township Parks, Recreation and Seniors, led by the 120-acre Clintonwood Park. Clintonwood includes rental facilities, the Renee Przybylski Memorial Spray Park and the Senior Community Center. There is also water access at Deer Lake Beach and Bay Court Park. In downtown Clarkston, Depot Park includes a beautiful gazebo and playground for children. Oakland County boasts numerous parks and trails that are great for fishing, biking, camping, geocaching and picnicking. Springfield Charter Township has several parks, preserves, an overlook and a community center.

ART IN THE VILLAGE Art in the Village, the primary fund-raiser for the Clarkston Historical Society, takes place on a September weekend in Depot Park. It features works from artisans from across the region, who offer paintings, pottery, photography, jewelry and sculpture for sale. There is also live music, children’s activities and food offered by local organizations.

LIBRARIES The Clarkston Independence Library District offers programming for young and old, while the Springfield Township Library provides a variety of programs as well as space for studying, meetings and computer classes.

CLARKSTON AREA FARMERS MARKET There is plenty of locally grown food available at the Clarkston Area Farmers Market as well as merchandise created by local artisans. The market is open Saturdays from early June to early October at the Clarkston Community Education Center, 6558 Waldon Rd.

DTE ENERGY MUSIC THEATRE The DTE Energy Music Theatre, which seats more than 15,000, has been a fixture in Clarkston for many years. It opened in the 1970s and was once known as the Pine Knob Music Theatre until taking its current name in 2001. Each summer, a variety of well-known acts play at
