Setting atop the Puyallup Valley offers residents long-lasting summer evenings as the sun sets behind the Olympics and the beautiful purple and orange sky stretches far out to the south, including the view of the shining harbor of Tacoma’s Commencement Bay. In early 2014, Bonney Lake was listed as one of the top Ten Washington Cities in which to purchase a home. Bonney Lake has become a premier city for families and community in the western Washington, Puget Sound and eastern Pierce County region. Located just a short drive from Seattle, Tacoma and neighboring Puyallup, Buckley, Sumner, and Enumclaw, the region has the best of both big city and friendly community living. With easy access to the Sounder, with a train station located just down the hill in Sumner, commuting to work and school is made easy with many bus routes coming and going from the Bonney Lake Park and Ride. SERVICE CLUBS The Chamber Collective is a volunteerbased business organization that seeks to enrich the community by promoting commerce and becoming actively involved in community affairs. www. TheChamberCollective.com Beautify Bonney Lake was created in 2004 to enhance the beauty of our city by creating a vehicle to easily capture the goodwill of local citizens via their willingness to create permanent and positive improvements. Each year over a dozen projects are selected for beautification and cleanup. This nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization averages over 500 volunteers for their annual event on the third Saturday in September. A beautiful city creates pride for all who live, work, play and conduct business within its boundaries. Three foundational elements make up the Beautify Bonney Lake group – the City of Bonney Lake, the Chamber and Bonney Lake citizens, and they work
together to create an attractive city. The group assists annually with Park Appreciation Day in April and has adopted Main Street for quarterly cleanups. The Kiwanis Club of Bonney Lake is a longstanding service club that engages in a variety of local service projects including the Bonney Lake High School Scholarship program, community projects assisting senior citizens, Christmas tree lighting festivities, fire department open houses and the Key Club at Bonney Lake High School. The club meets at 7 a.m. Tuesdays at the Cedar Ridge Assisted Living & Retirement Center at 9515 198th Ave., Bonney Lake. The Lions is the worlds largest service organization, and our local chapter welcomes all community members to apply for membership. Meetings are held at 7 p.m. the second and fourth Thursday of each month, at the Bonney Lake Senior Center. Lions 4 Kids is a free necessities resource serving children in area school districts. A boutique-style clothing bank allows kids to “shop” for needed, free clothing items and shoes as well as personal health care items. Children must qualify for support and the house is not open to the general public – contact the house for more information on requirements. In addition to clothing, the Lions 4 Kids House offers The Prom Project (helping high school seniors afford to attend their prom), Back to School (stocking kids with needed school supplies at the end of the summer) and more programs. Message phone: (253) 447-3844 The Greater Bonney Lake Historical Society was established in 2001 to discover, preserve and disseminate knowledge of the history of the area and the state for future generations to enjoy. In 2007, the group’s major project was the Naches Trail Sign dedication that shows visitors where wagon trains traveled through the city. In 2009, with funds from a grant awarded by Pierce County and matched by the City of Bonney Lake, 10 historic markers were dedicated throughout the city. These beautiful works of art, made from stainless steel plaques mounted on Wilkeson sandstone boulders, are visible reminders of the impact, contributions and heritage of our city. Last year, Bonney Lake’s Plateau, a pictorial history book written by historical society member Winona Jacobsen, was published. This book and annual calendars are available for purchase from the historical society. Monthly meetings are held on the last Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Bonney Lake Branch Library. The Friends of the Bonney Lake Library is a volunteer organization, and is one of many Friends groups found throughout the nation’s library systems. Friends’ purposes are to raise funds for a local library, and to aid staff in any way they can, such as helping to plan, arrange for and help supervise library programs. Friends purchase extra programming, refreshments, supplies, furniture and other items not available through regular library funds. Friends welcome patron and staff suggestions on how the money raised is spent at their local library. Friends’ main funding-raising activity is selling patron-donated books, DVDs and CDs at the library. In addition, The Bonney Lake Friends sponsor up to four book sales a year. Donations of the above items, as well as cash, are always appreciated. The Friends of the Bonney Lake Library meet at 12:30 p.m. the second Wednesday of each month in the library’s meeting room. Visitors and potential new members are always welcome! The Greater Bonney Lake Veteran’s Memorial Committee was formed as a result of the park board’s interest in having a memorial to honor U.S. veterans. Individual citizens have joined to assist in furthering this endeavor. www.gblvmc.org The American Cancer Society Relay For Life movement gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost and fight back against the disease. At relay events, teams of people camp out at local high schools, parks or fairgrounds and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have representative on the track at all times during the event because cancer never sleeps. Each year more than 4 million people in more than 5,200 communities in the United States and 19 other countries gather to take part in this relay movement. thechambercollective.com 13
