Chamber Welcome Welcome! On behalf of the Belvidere Area Chamber of Commerce, we want to welcome you to Boone County, whether this is your first time visiting or if you are relocating to our great community. One of the first things you will discover about Boone County is the friendliness of our people who come from all walks of life. Whether you are a teacher, farmer, fireman, police officer, lawyer, librarian or homemaker, we are all connected in some way. Our children go to the same schools, our families worship together, or perhaps we volunteer for some of the same worthwhile community organizations. There is a great work ethic among Boone County residents – a willingness to chip in and get to work on making the community a better place to live and work. That is just one of the many reasons that make Boone County unique. It is a place where people truly care about one another. The Belvidere Area Chamber of Commerce shares in that belief. The Chamber is a group of businesses working together to promote the business environment in our community. By promoting business, there are more opportunities for job growth and more people who desire to live, work and play in our communities. There’s much to love about Boone County. Our spacious parks, conservations areas and golf courses are enjoyed throughout many months of the year. When spring arrives, our ball diamonds come alive with families watching their little ones play soccer and baseball. Summer is a time for heading to the local pool and gearing up for the muchanticipated Boone County Fair. There are many arts and craft fairs, weekly farmers market, summer concerts, Heritage Days and the 20th anniversary of our murals, as well as special events hosted by any one of our many civic organizations. In the fall, there are many events and festivities organized by the park district and Boone County Conservation District, as well as the thrills of Friday night high school football at our three local high schools. The winter months brings residents together at the new outdoor skating rink.

8|

As we celebrate our 102nd anniversary, our mission remains the same – to support the diverse business community in town. Our Chamber staff, board of directors and volunteers work tirelessly on a number of efforts – on the beautification of our commercial districts, the creation of fun events that bring residents together and promote local business, organizing informational and social events to bring residents together, sponsoring the annual Hometown Christmas celebration and much more. Inside this guide, you will find plenty of information about education, health care, business and living in Boone County. We hope you will enjoy special features on the Boone County Fair, a profile of the Faces of Boone County and an in-depth look at some of the area’s family-owned businesses. Whether you are spending a day, a weekend, or permanently relocating to Boone County, we encourage you to contact the Belvidere Area Chamber of Commerce for current information, helpful tips, a calendar of events or just general information about our community. Take some time to explore Belvidere and Boone County to see what everyone is talking about. Matt Branom Board President

Faces of Boone County Putting out fires Al Hyser didn’t have to become a firefighter. He was making a comfortable living, working as a sales rep for Carlson Distributors, a Rockford-based building materials company. But the Belvidere native was looking for something more fulfilling. He found it when he came home to serve his hometown as a firefighter. “That was the key to my decision,” he said. “As a salesman, people are talking about what products you have or do not have; in fire service, you can see the end product. On a citizen’s worst day, we can be difference makers. I can’t think of a better way to serve the community. I would do this all over again.”

For the health of Boone County The health of Boone County is Amanda Mehl’s top priority. Mehl is the public health administrator for the Boone County Health Department, which works to keep the almost 54,000 residents in Boone County safe. Mehl joined the department five years ago as director of personal health services, responsible for clinical nursing and health outreach education. Last fall, she replaced retiring administrator Cynthia Frank. “We are fortunate to have a great health department with a tremendous staff,” Mehl said. “Our team is committed to the health and wellness of our community.”

Putting students first When Dr. Dan Woestman, was hired as Belvidere School District’s superintendent in 2016, he wasted little time getting to work. First, he started getting to know the personnel and schools. Then he spent a day in each school; rode the bus with the students; met with parents and toured each school. He was a substitute teacher in various classes, dined with students and teachers and held town hall meetings with community members. “The work we do happens in the classroom,” he said. “It doesn’t happen in my office.”

10 |

Hyser joined the Belvidere Fire Department in 1995. In 2010, he became a lieutenant and four years later, he was promoted to captain. In 2015, he was named chief. “The most satisfying part of my job is watching the department grow in different ways,” he said. “Aside from emergency response, the most important aspect of our jobs is fire prevention. We have increased our presence in the schools. Training is also important. We are starting to see the fruits of our labor.” Hyser oversees a staff of 28, which includes firefighters, lieutenants, captains and one administrative assistant. The department responds to about 3,000 calls a year, mostly medically related, along with fire, rescue and public assistance calls. In addition to covering Belvidere, the fire department responds to Cherry Valley Fire As the administrator and a registered nurse, Mehl’s role is to oversee the clinic and 17-person staff, including nurses, nutritionists and licensed environmental health practitioners. Many of the staff speak Spanish, to accommodate a growing segment of Boone County’s population. “In public health you never know what is coming next,” she said. “If we experience a large-scale outbreak of salmonella or influenza, for example, my role is to lead the department in the prevention of a communicable disease threat to the community.” The local health department investigates more than 70 illnesses – from the Zika virus to foodborne illnesses. “We are the unsung heroes of population health,” Mehl said. “Any health Growing up in Cincinnati, Ohio, Woestman, the oldest of six children, developed a love for education at an early age. He attended public schools until seventh grade and then was home-schooled for a year, before attending St. Xavier, a private, all-boys high school. “I loved high school,” he said. “It gives you an opportunity to learn and feed your curiosity.” Others encouraged Woestman to study economics in college; Woestman, however, had other plans. He wanted to be an English teacher. After his freshman year at Brigham Young University, Woestman went on a twoyear Mormon mission trip to East Germany, where he taught English. “I enjoyed the social work and the interaction with the people,” he said. “I also realized that I wanted to be a

Department as a rapid intervention team. It is also a member of Mutual Aid Box Alarm System, a regional mutual aid system, headquartered in Illinois, with 1,500 member fire departments across the Midwest. Hyser and his wife, Lisa, have been married 26 years and have two sons, Eric and Garrett, and a 1-year-old granddaughter, Madison. During his free time, Hyser enjoys working out and rooting for the Green Bay Packers and Chicago White Sox. He also serves as a volunteer coach for the Belvidere Bucs football team. Most importantly, he is happy to be serving his hometown. “I love Belvidere and hopefully I am making a difference,” he says. “There is a sense of community here. We keep pushing forward to make Belvidere a better place. I can’t imagine being anywhere else.”

department flies under the radar, keeping the community safe. We’re your tax dollars hard at work. We’re always investigating matters that can easily spread throughout the community. “I love Boone County,” she added. “It is a place with a great history and hardworking individuals. Sometimes it’s easier to work in preventative health care in smaller communities. It’s easier to bring partners together for projects. Boone County has a lot of potential.” Away from work, Mehl enjoys dancing, teaching Zumba and traveling with her husband, Carmelo, who works for the Winnebago County Health Department.

teacher.” Woestman returned to BYU where he finished his degree in education. He also met his future wife, Sarah, in college. The couple has three young children. In addition to his professional work, Woestman is a High Priest in the Northern Illinois leadership for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, assisting youth pastors and youth leaders. “My faith is very important to me,” he said. “Being in a leadership position for a congregation has helped me lead people professionally. It’s not just telling people what to do, but connecting their hopes and dreams.”

Calling Boone County home Growing up, Karl Johnson had political aspirations. “I dreamed of becoming a U.S. senator,” he said. “But it wasn’t in the cards.” It may not have turned out the way he imagined, but Johnson is still making an impact on his community. Today, Johnson serves as the chairman of the Boone County board. He has served on the board for eight years. “It is something I thought about for a long time,” said Johnson, who has spent the past 20 years working as a sales rep for HD Supply Waterworks in Belvidere. “I have always been interested in politics and I am passionate about the process.”

Class act Dr. Michael Greenlee spent 10 years as a principal in the North Boone School District. So, it made sense when he was hired as the district’s superintendent two years ago. North Boone Community Unit District 200 serves about 1,600 students from preschool through high school in the villages of Caledonia, Capron and Poplar Grove. “I am very familiar with the area,” he said. “I like the size of the district, the rural community feel and I know most of the people. I love it here.” Greenlee grew up in Rockford, where he attended Guilford High School and excelled at basketball and baseball. Guilford is also where

Law and order For as long as she can remember, Tricia Smith dreamed of a career in law. She has been an attorney, a police officer and now, she serves as the Boone County State’s Attorney. “It is nice to be in smaller community where you can get to know other attorneys, and where you can really make a difference,” the Belvidere native said. “I love every minute of my work.” Smith graduated from Belvidere High School and attended college at Bradley University, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Administration of Criminal Justice. Johnson fell in love with Boone County when he and his wife, Jennifer, moved to the area in the early 1990s. For 10 years, they rented an old farmhouse on 80 acres, large enough for their goats and cattle to roam, before buying a place of their own in the county. “I really enjoy the rural setting, farm atmosphere,” Johnson said. “I love the small-town feel of Belvidere and Poplar Grove. These are communities who really care about their neighbors.” The couple has two teenage sons – Hayden, 17, and Jarrett, 14. They stay busy helping their children show beef cattle at the Boone County Fair. Johnson also coaches youth hockey and has coached youth baseball. It was Johnson’s passion for Boone County that helped him make the decision to run for a

seat on the county board, the legislative body responsible for policy decisions related to operating county government. “Our job is to bring municipalities together to promote economic growth throughout the county, and to be responsible in how we spend the citizens’ money,” Johnson said. “Our board has challenges. There are situations when we don’t always agree. But most importantly, we must always treat each other with respect.” As for his own political ambitions, Johnson might not become a U.S. senator, but he’s not ruling anything out. “With anything, the timing has to be right. It would be fun if the opportunity presented itself.”

he was introduced to his wife, Shelly. The couple has been married nearly 24 years and has three daughters: Megan, a student at Iowa State; Britlyn, a junior at Guilford; and Jaden, who attends Holy Family.

working on creating collaborative joint goals. Greenlee has several key priorities, including staff retention, academic achievement and aligning curriculum across all areas of the district.

Greenlee has made the most of his opportunities. He served 10 years as a physical education teacher at Harlem High School. In addition to being a North Boone principal, Greenlee also spent three years at a superintendent in Rockton and one year as assistant superintendent at Belvidere, before taking the North Boone job. “I have been very fortunate to learn under some great mentors, including Mike Houselog and Dennis Harezlak,” he said.

In his free time, Greenlee enjoys spending family time at their cottage in Green Lake, Wisconsin. He also plays golf and softball, although now it is more for the social aspect rather than the competition. “It is a good release and a chance to spend some quality time with good friends.”

Greenlee and the North Boone district are working on a six-year strategic plan. The board, along with teacher and staff representatives, is years later, she received her law degree from the University of Iowa. Smith’s first job as an attorney was at Tobin & Ramon law firm. After a few years of private practice, she decided to pursue her interest in law enforcement, becoming a Rockford police officer. For six years, she patrolled Rockford’s west side at night, where she encountered some intense situations. “It was a completely different world,” she said. “It taught me that not everyone is the same as you. I have been shot at. I have had some scary moments, but you have to trust your fellow officers. It was an invaluable experience.” Smith then took her experience as a police officer back into the courtroom as an attorney

Greenlee is grateful to be in an educational leadership position in Boone County. “When you work with young people every day,” he said, “you get the opportunity to see there are some really great kids during some pretty remarkable things.”

with the Boone County State’s Attorney’s office, where she worked with traffic, misdemeanor, juvenile and felony cases. In 2008, she went to work at the Law Offices of John Maville. Smith serves as secretary of the Winnebago County Police Museum board, and is a member of the Boone County Bar Association. She is a member of Zonta and past president of the Cosmopolitan Club. In her free time, Smith stays busy with her husband, a Rockford police officer, and their young son. “I wake up every morning excited about what I get to do,” she said. “Being state’s attorney keeps you on your toes. You never know what the next phone call or case is going to bring. There is never a dull moment.” w

A Day Out in Boone County

Museum in December. In August, the airport hosts a fly-in/drive-in pancake breakfast sponsored by the Poplar Grove Lions Club, which is the Lions’ biggest fundraiser every year.

here’s always something to do in Boone County, whether it’s taking a long walk through the Conservation District or visiting one of our museums. Here’s just a small sample of fun things to see and do.

Boone County Historical Museum

Poplar Grove Airport and Wings & Wheels Museum Pilots from all over the world stop at a small airport in Boone County for the chance to step back in time and enjoy grassroots aviation. Visitors come from nearly every state in the country, as well as Europe, South America, Asia and Australia. In 2016 there were even visitors from China and Russia. The Poplar Grove Airport is a privately owned, public use airport that was started in 1972 by Dick Thomas, a retired dairy farmer. When Thomas died in 1994, his son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Tina, bought the airport, which was home to 40 airplanes, a flight school and a maintenance shop. This led to the development of Bel-Air Estates Fly-in community in 1997. Four years later, the lots were sold out. There are 100 lots with airport taxiway access, 40 without access and 39 townhomes. There are 400 airplanes

based at the airport, which has a thriving flight school and a nationally recognized maintenance facility. In 2015, it was named the top Privately Owned Airport in Illinois. In 1997, an interest in vintage aviation led to the creation of the Poplar Grove Aviation Education Association and the Poplar Grove Vintage Wings & Wheels Museum. The education association is a nonprofit organization developed to preserve early transportation artifacts and promote education in the transportation fields. It is funded through memberships, sponsorships and donations. 2017 marks the museum’s 20th year, and several events are planned to commemorate the anniversary. The pre-World War II museum focuses on the aviation and automobile industries as they grew together in the early 20th century. Exhibits feature vintage airplanes and automobiles. The floor layout changes up to three times a year to accommodate seasonal exhibits and to keep the layout fresh. Popular items in the museum collection include a 1931 American Eaglet airplane donated by Gene Morris of Texas and a 1930 Ford Model A Mail truck donated by Gordie and Nada Geddes of Poplar Grove. In 2013, Jack and Peggy Wolf of Belvidere donated the funds to acquire a bronze statue of early aviation pioneer Elrey B. Jeppesen. New in 2017 is a 1934 Ford dump truck and a 1941 Doodlebug – a Model A Ford converted to a tractor. The museum is open Thursday through Sunday, April through September, as well as by appointment. Field trips for students, summer camps, lectures and tours are available throughout the season. A variety of fundraising events are held, including a murder mystery dinner in October, a holiday wine tasting in November and Santa at the

14 |

The mission of the museum is to stimulate interest in Boone County history through education, research and preservation of artifacts and archival materials. Research material includes books, newspapers, videos, pictures and maps. Bound notebooks containing newspaper clippings as far back as 1860 give guests a glimpse into the past. In the transportation room, guests will see a 1966 Plymouth Fury, the first car rolled off the Belvidere Chrysler Plant assembly line. Check out the two-story, 1840 log cabin home in the Agriculture Room. And in the Grand Gallery you’ll find displays honoring some of Belvidere’s past heroes, including 1969 Miss America Judi Ford. The museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It’s also available for private events.

McEachran Homestead Winery As the only winery in Boone County, McEachran Homestead offers a unique wine tasting experience for visitors and local residents alike. The McEachran Homestead was settled in 1857 by John McEachran, the great-greatgrandfather of Herb Greenlee, the current owner. McEachran immigrated to northern Illinois from Scotland and settled in what was known then as the Argyle Scottish Settlement. The McEachran Homestead is officially recognized by the State of Illinois as a Sesquicentennial Farm.

Since the winery opened, the vineyard has doubled to 1,000 vines, which includes 19 different varieties of grapes, over two acres of property. The original farm of 160 acres has been expanded to 285 acres with corn and soybeans as the main crops. Eleven acres are dedicated to 19 varieties of grapes, raspberries and fruit trees, all of which are meticulously tended, then handcrafted into cold-climate grape and fruit wines. The winery is open year-round.

Tours are available for guests to learn about the different types of wine varieties and how viticulture and production aspects influence the flavor of McEachran Homestead’s wines. Tours also offer insight into the pruning, tending and nurturing of the vineyards and surrounding gardens. Groups can sample a variety of cold-climate grape and seasonal fruit wines made on-site.

The Keen Age Center The Boone County Council on Aging provides a variety of programs to older adults and their caregivers that help enrich and improve their quality of life. Recreation When it comes to recreation, there’s plenty to do right here in Boone County.

L

et’s start with golf. Swan Hills Golf Course, 2600 Gustafson Rd., Belvidere, opened in 1995 and offers one of the Midwest’s most desirable courses to play, with 168 acres of meticulously maintained fairways and greens and a completely tree-lined property. A creek runs through Swanhills and comes into play on several holes along with three ponds that challenge the accuracy of any golfer. The course has 16 sand bunkers that demand a little skill or luck. Number 8 is the course’s signature hole, nestled in a stand of trees, a creek just in front of the tees and all along the right. Beaver Creek Golf Course, 19619 Le Roy Center Rd., Capron, is a good challenge for golfers of all abilities. The course opened in 1997 on 60 acres in rural Boone County. The nine-hole course has a total yardage of 3,033 yards with a creek winding throughout the course that comes into play on five of the nine holes. There are four sand traps and large greens. Beaver Creek has four holes over 350 yards. Timber Pointe Golf Club, 5750 Woodstock Rd., Poplar Grove, is one of the most popular golf courses in northern Illinois. Situated on 160 acres, the course has five sets of tees on each hole, bent grass tees and greens, bluegrass fairways, 40 acres of established timber, 50 bunkers, four areas of water including a wildlife pond with cattails and plenty of prairie grasses, native grasses and wildflowers. There’s also a golf shop, practice facilities and The Grille restaurant.

In addition to great golf, Boone County offers many types of parks and recreation from a simple stroll or bike ride down the Long Prairie Trail, a border-to-border, 12-mile trail, to a cool and inviting swim at Belvidere Park’s William Grady Pool, which even has a separate, gated toddler pool. Enjoy the Rivers Edge Recreation Center, which offers four recreation rooms, a fullsize gym and a 35-foot-high climbing wall. Belvidere Park offers 105 acres containing six shelters, basketball, tennis and volleyball courts as well as ball diamonds, playgrounds and a fishing pier.

The Belvidere Park District has a Special Recreation Center dedicated to its Northlands Association for Special Recreation program, which helps residents with special needs to be able to have recreation in their lives. The Riverside Ice Arena is located within Doty Park in downtown Belvidere. The ice arena includes one NHL regulation ice rink and a warming house where skates can be rented and concessions can be purchased. The rink is typically available from November to early March, depending on weather. The rink is also home to the Belvidere Fury, a competitive hockey team made up of area high school athletes.

The Write Stuff

O

No event in the history of Belvidere and Boone County has had as much impact as the killer tornado that ripped through the city on April 21, 1967. The timing couldn’t have been worse. Schools had just been dismissed. In the aftermath, 24 people died, including 17 children, and more than 500 were injured. More than 100 homes and 12 businesses were destroyed.

ver the years, there have been some historic occurrences that have taken place in Belvidere and Boone County. Meet two local authors who have detailed some of those happenings in recently published books.

The 1967 Belvidere Tornado – Mike Doyle Mike Doyle has called Belvidere home for most of his life. As a former newspaper reporter, he’s seen it all, including the devastation one tornado left on this town of 25,000.

“I did this because these tornadoes are important and have impacted the history of Boone County and the surrounding area,” Doyle said. “I talked to many people who witnessed those tragic events, but it was obvious there were more people out there with intriguing tales to share.”

That’s why Doyle wrote “The 1967 Belvidere Tornado,” a revision of a book self-published by the museum in 2007. It is written using existing documentation and first-person accounts with additional information on this tornado and three more tornadoes that have struck the area since the last book was published: Jan. 7, 2008, in Poplar Grove; Nov. 22, 2010, in Caledonia; and, most recently, April 9, 2015, in Rochelle, Fairdale and southern Boone County.

This is the fifth book Doyle has written and second for The History Press. His first book was “April 21, 1967: The Belvidere Tornado.” Doyle, a retired high school journalism teacher, is a member of the Boone County Historical Society.

PIT STOP

In March, Doyle held a book signing before a packed crowd at the museum. The book was also celebrated as part of several special activities that were held during the 50th anniversary of the tornado, April 21, 2017. “I could not have accomplished this without the selfless cooperation of survivors and others in the community affected by the tornado, in 1967 and 50 years later,” Doyle said. “I am humbled and privileged to be able to tell their stories.”

The Walldogs – Jay Allen For anyone who’s been around Belvidere for any length of time, they’ve probably seen the artistic work of the Walldogs, a group of public art muralists who spend summers beautifying communities across the country. One of those Walldogs is local sign maker Jay Robert Allen, who has written a book, “The Walldogs,” detailing the journeys these talented artists have traveled since they painted their first project in 1993 – when 100 muralists gathered in Allerton, Iowa, the group’s first project. “Everyone involved with the Walldogs would look at me and say, ‘Someone needs to write a book about us,’” said Allen, who owns ShawCraft Sign Co. in Machesney Park. “I finally gave in.” Allen was the co-chair behind the “Walldog Rendezvous” held in Belvidere in 1997. It was the third Walldog meet ever held. The event attracted 350 artists from all over the world who painted 6,000 square feet of murals on 10 walls in Belvidere’s downtown business district in just 72 hours. The festival won many awards, including the 1997 Governor’s Art Award for Community from the Illinois Arts Council.

“We sat in a curious state on the scaffolding right from the very first meet trying to understand why total strangers treated us like rock stars. We weren’t used to such generosity. It was a study in human dynamics that needed to be promoted at a time when separation was more common than collaboration.” In addition to Belvidere, the Walldogs have also created murals in Canada and across Illinois, Kentucky, Wisconsin, California, Minnesota, Indiana and Pennsylvania. “Nothing gets done without partnership,” Allen said. “Belvidere was the first partnership with the Walldog movement. We took our light out from under in a bucket and we could shine. We were a marketable asset within a community. It was a collaboration of artists and a collaboration of community. It felt like a story that finally needed to be told. “Public art is designed to create a space for people to gather, where bonds form,” he added. “That’s not the secret of art; that’s the secret of life.” w

body shop became for sale, the couple jumped at the chance. Boone County Auto Body Shop has been in business for 40 years.

or years, many local businesses have been successful thanks to the hard work and commitment shown by generations of loved ones who make up the family business. Here are just a few examples right here in our own backyard.

“This was something Ed wanted to do,” said Kathy, who became the bookkeeper. “We took a chance and so far it has worked out.” While the couple is semiretired, their nephew, Shane, runs the day-to-day operations. He started working as a painter during high school, and has been there ever since.

Alpine Bank The original founders planted the seeds of Alpine Bank at the corner of State and Logan in Belvidere in 1908. Originally established as Farmers State Bank, the Funderburg family began its involvement with the bank in 1923 when Hugh K. Funderburg was elected to its board. While banks were failing across the country, Hugh met with the bank examiners and pledged all of his and his family’s personal assets in an attempt to keep Farmers State Bank from closing. His efforts were successful and in 1931, Hugh was elected bank president. After Hugh’s death in 1961, his son, R. Robert Funderburg (Bob) was elected chairman. In 1990, Bob became ill and, in 1992, passed leadership on to his son, R. Robert Funderburg Jr. (Rob). During his tenure as chairman, Rob has greatly expanded Alpine Bank’s branch network with building an additional nine branches, plus two in-school branches at Belvidere and Belvidere North High Schools. Alpine Bank has grown into the largest local bank serving Winnebago, Boone and DeKalb counties in Northern Illinois. “My family founded this bank on the premise of helping people, businesses and communities succeed,” said Rob Funderburg. “It’s an honor to continue to serve generation after generation with these ideals.”

Barr’s Flowers Flowers are forever. At least they are in Belvidere. One floral shop has been around for 130 years. In 1988, the Barr family bought Winkelman’s Flowers, a longtime staple in Belvidere. Now known as Barr’s Flowers, the business is located on State Street. Mother Pat Barr bought the business, and her son Tracy also came to work for the store. These days, daughter Debbie, who joined the family business after college, runs the family company, which sells flowers and gift items.

“This business has a hometown feel,” Debbie said. “We know at least 80 percent of people who walk in. We see them through births, weddings and other special occasions. It’s a nice feeling.”

“We’re very thankful that our business has done well through the years due to the support of our community,” Kathy said. “We’ve survived the ups and downs of owning your own business and look forward to many more years under Shane’s management.”

Belvidere Funeral Home, Inc. At a young age, Brandon and Colin Jensen started working for their father, Lance, around the family business, Belvidere Funeral Home. The younger Jensens helped wherever they could – mowing, painting or cleaning up around the longtime funeral home. In 2013, Colin Jensen earned his license to become a funeral director. Three months later, tragedy struck, when Lance suddenly passed away. “It was difficult,” Colin said. “But working in the funeral business helped my family deal with our loss.” Today, the business that Lance ran for 30 years is in good hands. His widow, Susan, is the owner. Colin is the funeral director and Brandon is working on obtaining his license as well. “We enjoy helping people in their time of need,” Colin said. “This business isn’t for everyone. But when we work with a family, we understand what they’re going through. We’ve been there ourselves.”

Boone County Shopper The Boone County Shopper is a weekly publication that has been in business since 1947. Bill Branom bought into the business in 1965 and it’s been part of the Branom family ever since. Son Ed came on board in 1997 and his brother, Matt, joined along 10 years later. Bill passed away five years ago, but his wife, Yvonne, remains the majority owner. Ed was selling insurance at the time. “I was trying to build my own business when my dad said, ‘I’ve already done that for you. Advertising is easier to sell than insurance.’ He was right,” says Ed. The Shopper, which has circulation of 20,500 and is available to 99 percent of Boone County, has always been an all-advertising publication. “The best part of our business is getting to know other businesses,” says Ed. “We enjoy helping them promote their products and services.”

Boone County Auto Body Ed and Kathy Fitch never planned on running a successful auto body shop. Ed was a service manager at a local dealership and Kathy worked as a hairdresser. But when a local

Brereton, Inc. In 1950, Brereton Inc. started out as a general insurance and real estate agency in Belvidere. Now, 67 years later, the company specializes in health insurance for individuals. Jack Brereton, who was joined by his son, Fred, in 1974, founded the business. Jack has since passed away; these days Fred is active in the business along with his son, Ric. “To join your dad in business is a real pleasure,” Fred says. “You get to know him personally and professionally. It is extremely satisfying and very rewarding to know my son has adopted the same philosophy. I have been truly blessed.”

CCSI’s latest project is a restaurant named Iron and Coal, that is scheduled to open in downtown Belvidere in 2018. The restaurant will feature a coffee shop, bakery, and banquet hall and will feature lunch, dinner, and craft beers. “It’s going to have a relaxing feel where people can come for a beer or ice cream,” says Keith. “It will be family friendly.” The Caldwells feel good about the impact their family business is making on their hometown. “It’s very rewarding to see how receptive the community has been,” Keith says. “Belvidere gave us a chance to grow our business. We’re always adding jobs. It feels good to give back.”

Concordia Lanes Concordia Lanes and Lounge is a 12-lane bowling center and full bar and grill that’s been around since 1958. Concordia offers leagues, open bowling, birthday parties, and fundraisers, while serving up drinks and some of the best food in town. Bud Gallano and his father, Fred, were partowners of the business in 1972. Twenty years later, Bud’s children assumed control of the family business. These days, daughter Mary runs the day to day operations, overseeing a staff of 15. “The best part of owning a bowling alley is getting to know the people,” says Mary. “We’ve had grandparents and parents spend their free time here. Some of their children were practically raised here. Many of our employees are high school students. There’s a real sense of family here at Concordia. It’s a staple of our community.”

CCSI International Inc. CCSI International Inc. is a conglomeration of many businesses. The Garden Prairie-based company has been a leader in pool enclosure and roof systems for 50 years. In addition, it’s the parent company for New Horizons Carwash Structures, a distillery, a print shop and All Paws Pet Wash, a business that started here and now has 350 locations in 46 states and five countries. The company was started by Charles Caldwell in 1964. Today, the business is operated by his son, Russell. The family-owned company also includes Russell’s children, Keith and Heather, and his brother Thomas.

Central Grain When you think about Boone County, you think about farming. Central Grain does too. The Belvidere-based company is a grain elevator that markets to area farmers within a 15-mile radius, offering services for buying and storing corn, soybeans and wheat. Central Grain can ship products across the country by rail or truck, whether it’s to an ethanol plant in Illinois or Wisconsin or a chicken processing company in the southeast. Central Grain was started from scratch by Bob Mickey in 1957. Eventually his sons Bob and Dan joined the company. Bob Sr. died in 2013, but his sons have carried on the family business. Central Grain now has 12 fulltime employees. “I’ve lived here most my life,” says Dan. “Farmers are great people to work with at Central Grain. They are competitive and independent. The resourcefulness of the American farmer staggers my imagination. This is a great place to be.”

Edwards Apple Orchard Since 1990, Ken and Barb Hall have operated the farm that was owned by her parents and

grandparents. In 1963, Robert Jr. and Betty Edwards bought the farm from his parents and began transforming it from dairy and row crops to apples and a retail market. The property offers something for everyone, including the Apple Barn, which has a gift shop, bakery, fudge kitchen, coffee shop, cider mill, packing facility and cold storage. Other buildings include a farm museum and a farm animal barn. The Apple Orchard is open from late August to Thanksgiving.

J & D Oil, Inc./J &D Countryside Marathon When she was young, Lisa Vance would spend time riding with her father, RJ Daniels in a fuel truck. At the time she was just enjoying the ride, not realizing it was the start of becoming part of a family business. From her father’s initial business, with the addition of her brother Judd Daniels, a tank wagon business grew into a fuel delivery company, J & D Oil, Inc. and the addition of a convenience store in 2002, J & D Countryside Marathon which is located in Poplar Grove. Lisa joined the company in 1983. “I was looking for a job and the family business needed a bookkeeper.” With the passing of Judd in 2010, it was a natural progression for Lisa to join her father in the running of the business. “The best part of owning a family business is working with my dad, having the ability to be hands on in decision making. Making our choices based on the customers we serve and the community that we have grown with over the years,“ said Vance. “I was hired to handle the bookkeeping and I’ve been here ever since.”

LaMarca’s North State Motors Henry LaMarca sold life insurance for seven years. But when he bought a car, fixed it up and sold it LaMarca found a passion he turned into a career. He went on to sell new cars, before opening his own used car dealership in Rockford. LaMarca’s moved to Belvidere in 1987 and has enjoyed a good ride ever since. These days, Henry owns LaMarca’s North State Motors and works with his son, Joe, who caught the car bug at a young age. “Joe’s a natural,” says his dad. “It’s a great opportunity to work together. A great deal of our time is devoted to seeking out the best pre-owned vehicles we can find. There’s a lot of competition in this business, but we believe our product is better and is priced competitively.”

Pacemaker Pacemaker Countryside Markets has been in business for 65 years. The business was started by two sons of Italian immigrants. Anthony J. Dal Pra started the Dal Pra family grocery store in 1945 and was joined by his brother Ampellio Dal Pra, after World War II. They ran the businesses together until Anthony’s death in 1989 and Ampellio’s retirement in 1991. Since then, the businesses have been managed by other members of the Dal Pra family.

place to raise a family,” says Kent. “We’ve seen many changes over the years. The biggest change has been in technology with internet banking, debit cards and ATMs. Another change has been with banking regulations. For instance in 1980 we would finance a home with the borrower signing a note and mortgage. Today, with regulations, that same financing would result in 13 or more forms totaling over 60 pages.”

RJ Daniels Fuel and Tire RJ Daniels Fuel and Tire is a business that offers tires from as small as lawn mower tires to as large as farm tractor tires and everything in between. The business also offers automotive repair and lawn equipment sales and service. The business was started in 1969 by RJ Daniels, who now spends the majority of his time farming. The business is now managed by his daughter, Ang.

The store in Belvidere was opened in 1965 and has gone through several expansions. Following the Belvidere tornado in 1967, the store was rebuilt and reopened for business later that year. In 2008, Pacemaker Countryside Market opened in Poplar Grove, as the family began to advertise under “Countryside Markets” to reflect the simple family tradition of country hospitality and service. There is also a location in Durand, Ill. All three stores are full-service grocery stores with deli, bakery, meat, produce and grocery departments. “Boone County has been good to us,” says co-owner Sheri Casey, who runs the business with brother Tony. “The people here are an extension of our family. We’ve tried to help the nonprofit organizations in our community and still conduct business. “We hope we’ve done some good for our community and that people will continue to shop with us.”

Poplar Grove State Bank Poplar Grove State Bank was organized and chartered in Poplar Grove in 1946. In 1962, the Kniep family purchased controlling interest in the bank. Thomas Kniep, at age 86, is still the chairman of the bank. His son, Kent, joined the bank in 1980 and has been president since 1991. Three of the bank’s 14 employees are family and 4 of the 5 board of directors are family. “Boone County has not only been a great place to operate a business but also a great

Ang started helping her dad while still in high school in 1978 and has at one time or another worked in each area of the business. “One of the best parts of the business is our employees. They are like family,” she says. “We also have great customers that are a joy to do business with. I’m one of the lucky few that can say I enjoy going to work.”

Stylehouse Furniture Stylehouse Furniture was founded after the owner, Richard, worked as a manager of another furniture store for 11 years. In 1977, he and his wife, Gail, purchased its current building and changed the name of the store to Style House. After Richard died in 2009, their son Larry became more involved with the business. Stylehouse has more than 45 different styles of products. “We enjoy working with the public,” says Gail. “It’s a nice feeling helping people furnish their home. We’ve been around so long, we’re now working with third generation family members. This is a pleasant business to be in.” w

Making Cars in Belvidere

F

CA US LLC is a North American automaker with a new name and a long history. Headquartered in Auburn Hills, Michigan, FCA US is a member of the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. (FCA) family of companies. FCA US designs, engineers, manufactures and sells vehicles under the Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram and FIAT brands, as well as the SRT performance vehicle designation. The company also distributes the Alfa Romeo 4C model and Mopar products. The company is building upon the historic foundations of Chrysler, the innovative American automaker first established by Walter P. Chrysler in 1925; and Fiat, founded in Italy in 1899 by pioneering entrepreneurs, including Giovanni Agnelli. Its presence in Boone County dates back to the mid-1960s. Construction of the Belvidere Assembly Plant began in 1964 and the first car was produced on July 7, 1965. Currently, there are more than 4,500 employees at the Belvidere plant. “Boone County is important to FCA US because it is committed to delivering services that will help attract investment, allowing businesses to flourish,” said Mike Bennett, manager, federal and state government affairs for FCA US. “It is what has allowed us to

invest more than $1 billion into the Belvidere Assembly Plant since 2009.” Over the years, some of the company’s most successful products have been produced at the Belvidere Assembly Plant, including the Chrysler New Yorker and Dodge Neon. That legacy will continue in 2017 with the launch of the Jeep Cherokee.

In 2016, FCA US announced plans to invest $350 million in Belvidere Assembly to retool it to produce the Jeep Cherokee. The move to Belvidere will help the company expand the Jeep brand and respond to a market shift toward SUVs. The Jeep Cherokee is an awardwinning product that offers best-in-class capability and up to 31 miles-per-gallon on the highway. Belvidere was awarded bronze status for its results in implementing World Class Manufacturing (WCM) in 2016. WCM is a methodology that focuses on eliminating waste, increasing productivity and improving quality and safety in a systematic and organized way. The year before, the new Belvidere body shop was awarded a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Green Building System certification for meeting the highest environmental standards. “Equally important to our operations and the 4,500 people that work there is that Boone County is a welcoming place to raise a family,” Bennett said. “World-class amenities combined with rural charm make Boone County a place FCA US is proud to have called home for more than 50 years.” w

Health Care

OSF HealthCare Plenty has changed since Saint Anthony Hospital was founded by the Sisters of the Third Order of Saint Francis at the corner of East State and Summit streets in Rockford in 1899. One thing that hasn’t changed, however, is the system’s commitment to providing quality care to patients throughout the northern Illinois area. OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center, a 254-bed tertiary care facility located in Rockford, is a member of OSF HealthCare, an affiliate corporation of The Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis, and a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network. OSF Medical Group primary care physicians can be found at several locations, including Belvidere, 1954 Gateway Center Dr. The clinic offers PromptCare, 3-D mammography, bone density testing, CT scan, labs, MRI, physical therapy ultrasound and X-ray, along with three family practice physicians. In addition, OSF is a regional medical center with Level I Trauma Center with a privately owned helicopter. OSF provides cardiovascular services, including Rockford

34 |

Cardiovascular Associates and is the only Rockford hospital providing Transaortic Valve Replacement. “OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center has been committed to the Rockford region for more than 117 years,” said OSF President Paula Carynski. “As the needs of the community grow and change, so, too, have the services OSF provides to the region. We are proud that our patients can receive world-class care right here at home.” Many projects are starting to take shape that will further enhance OSF’s quality of care. The largest is the construction of a 144,247-square-foot, four-story North Tower, which is attached to the existing hospital building. It will house 78 private rooms for medical and surgical beds. In the existing hospital, semi-private rooms will be converted to private rooms, allowing for a total of 190 private rooms when the project is completed in 2018. In addition, some ambulatory services will be offered on the first floor of the new North Tower, including PromptCare and the relocation of Women’s Services: mammography, ultrasound and bone densitometry. The project has created 650 to 700 construction jobs.

“Enhancing the experience for our patients, families, employees and medical staff is always at the forefront of our planning,” Carynski said. “Private rooms and a more modern setting will truly help with that endeavor. We are also very pleased to be able to make such a tremendous investment in our community through this expansion.” In 2015, OSF Surgical Group-Rockford was established, creating the largest multispecialty surgical group in the region. In addition, the Patricia D. Pepe Center for Cancer Care, located on the medical center campus, was expanded last year to meet increased patient needs and their comfort. Last fall, the OSF Medical Group opened the OSF Center for Health-Parkview. The twostory clinic, located at 1502 Parkview Ave., is home to primary care and physical therapy services, as well as a health fitness center. “We’re excited about all of the projects going on at OSF,” Carynski said. “It’s a busy time around here, but, ultimately, it’s going to provide a better experience for the patients and the communities we serve.”

Boone County is fortunate to have quality health care facilities like SwedishAmerican a Division of UW Health Medical Center/ Belvidere for patients and medical professionals alike. Just ask SwedishAmerican podiatrist Dr. Mike Corcoran. The Rockford native received his residency training in Milwaukee, before returning to Northern Illinois to work. He has been with SwedishAmerican since 2012. Corcoran specializes in everything from surgery and sports injuries to flat foot reconstruction. His services are in great demand – he sees patients in Belvidere four days a week.

“Belvidere is a great small town,” Corcoran said. “It is an excellent place to practice medicine and I have really gotten to know my patients well. SwedishAmerican has brought so many services here. Prior to opening, patients would have gone to Rockford, Madison or Chicago for this type of care. Relative to the size of town, care in Belvidere is far above the average of other similar-sized towns.” As a Division of UW Health, SwedishAmerican Medical Center/Belvidere has served the community for eight years. Since bringing hospital-based care back to Boone County in 2009, the center has

36 |

continued to introduce new services. In addition to 24-hour emergency care, surgery and an inpatient unit, Medical Center/ Belvidere offers a full range of outpatient services, including physical therapy, infusion services, echocardiograms, an anticoagulation clinic, sleep medicine, and laboratory and pulmonary function testing. The Medical Center/Belvidere’s infusion room offers a quiet, private area 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with many amenities to help meet the needs of our patients and families. The Medical Center/Belvidere infusion services is also certified to offer a unique drug called Tysabri, used to help MS patients with their symptoms.

Medical imaging services have been especially popular with area residents and the region. In addition to offering digital X-ray, DEXA scans (osteoporosis), ultrasound and digital mammography, the facility introduced mobile MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) in 2013 and replaced its CT scanner with a cutting-edge, 128-slice unit in early 2014, giving patients access to the same advanced technologies in Belvidere that are offered at SwedishAmerican Hospital in Rockford. The Medical Center/Belvidere offers outpatient Contrast CTs and non-contrast CTs Monday through Friday, 24 hours a day, and outpatient CTs on weekends. X-ray,

laboratory and echocardiogram services are offered 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The staff provided access to services when it is convenient for customers and their families. However, Medical Center/Belvidere offers area families more than technology. The facility’s Outpatient Specialty Clinic is utilized by specialty physicians from Rockford and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The clinic provides patients with local access to orthopedic surgeons, pulmonologists and a liver transplant physician from UW-Madison. In addition to Medical Center/Belvidere, SwedishAmerican serves residents of 12 counties in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin through a dedicated and caring staff, a major acute care hospital and a free-standing outpatient cancer center in Rockford, a network of 30 primary care and multi-specialty clinics and the region’s largest home health care agency.

Mercyhealth (formerly MercyRockford Health System) was formed in January 2015 through the merger of Mercy Health System and Rockford Health System. Today, Mercyhealth is a vertically integrated, nonprofit, multi-regional health system comprising five hospitals, a wholly-owned insurance company, more than 8,000 partner employees, 600 W2 partner physicians and over 85 primary and specialty care medical centers and clinics across more than 50 communities in 15 northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin counties. Mercyhealth provides over 75 physician specialties, including neonatal and pediatric intensive care, perinatal care, neurosurgery (brain and spine), heart and vascular care, cancer care, plastic and reconstructive surgery, trauma and orthopedics. A team of physicians and staff at Mercyhealth Belvidere, located at 1747 Henry Luckow Ln., serves the community with a passion for making lives better. The medical center offers family practice, urgent care, lab and X-ray services. The family medicine physicians include: Dr. Meredith Ulmer, who lives in Boone County with her husband and son; Dr. James Phoenix, a long-standing Boone County resident; and Dr. William Sandoval, who is bilingual in both Spanish and English.

The new, $505 million state-of-the-art facility will feature a statedesignated regional perinatal center, a Level 3 (the highest level) neonatal intensive care unit, pediatric and pediatric intensive care units, high-risk maternity care and pediatric emergency services. It will also include a Level 1 (highest level) trauma center and an adult sub-specialty hospital, with plastic and reconstructive surgery, brain and spine care, endocrinology, orthopedics, pulmonology and heart services and more. Its technologically advanced operating suites and surgical services will support a full range of inpatient and outpatient surgery, including minimally invasive surgery, imageguided surgery and robotic surgery. The facility will also include a comprehensive diagnostic center with lab and imaging; multi-disciplinary physician care clinics, serving adult and pediatric patients; and a comprehensive cardiac, peripheral and neurovascular interventional laboratory. This new facility will help ensure patients in Belvidere, and the surrounding Boone County, have access to the care they need, close to home. The Crusader Community Health Belvidere, located at 1050 Logan Ave., Belvidere, was established in 2004 as one of five Crusader Community Health locations in Northwest Illinois. As a Federally Qualified Health Center, the clinic provides access to primary health care to low-income and at-risk populations. An affordable sliding discount based on family size and income is available for the uninsured. Medicaid, Medicare and many private insurance plans are accepted. The clinic is staffed by eight medical providers with specialties in family medicine, pediatrics, women’s health and dental care for pediatric patients. Due to the large percentage of Hispanic patients, three medical providers speak Spanish. The Crusader Belvidere is open Monday through Friday with evening hours on Mondays and Thursdays. New patients are being accepted. Call (815) 4901600 for more information. The University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford is internationally recognized as a leader in medical education. As a collaborating center to the World Health

Organization each year, its competitive academic curriculum and acclaimed research opportunities attract top students and faculty worldwide to its scenic 20-acre campus. The college offers quality medical education, provides exceptional health care to the community and impacts the future of medicine through advanced research. Since 1955, the Rock River Valley Blood Center has been providing blood products and services to Boone County. Highland and Saint Joseph hospitals were among the first in the area to seek out a partnership with the blood center, which subscribes to a community-based blood banking philosophy. That means community donors know the blood they give stays in the community first to help patients that are family members, friends and neighbors. Working together with the blood center allowed for better patient care and access in Boone County. Despite the eventual closing of both hospitals, the blood center remained ingrained in the community supporting numerous organizations through financial, human and community resources and support. In 2008, the blood center opened the Belvidere Donor Center, further substantiating its mission to remain a fully committed partner to the people of Boone County. The blood center continues to be the only supplier of blood products and services to all of the medical facilities in Boone and Winnebago counties. DaVita Kidney Care, a leading provider of dialysis services in the country, opened a new facility in Belvidere in 2015. The new center is available six days a week and provides multiple shifts per day. The center has 12 stations and the capacity to treat approximately 72 patients. Patients have the opportunity to continue to work and go in to dialysis either before or after treatment three times a week, for three to four hours a shift. Having that flexibility in treatment for patients helps them to live an active life and continue to work. DaVita Kidney Care has more than 2,100 centers nationwide and has 15 centers in the neighboring counties with 29 centers in the state of Illinois. Boone County offers multiple locations for walk-in care, including the Boone County Health Department, Crusader Community

Health and Physicians Immediate Care. No appointments are required at Physicians Immediate Care and most clinics are open seven days a week, up to 12 hours a day, to treat non-life threatening illnesses and injuries. Heritage Woods of Belvidere is the only affordable assisted living community in Boone County. The community, which is designed to serve adults 65 and older of all incomes who need some help to maintain their independence, is located on the north side of Squaw Prairie Road, east of Illinois Hwy. 76. Heritage Woods is an alternative to a nursing home or to struggling alone at home and will especially benefit seniors who cannot afford private pay assisted living. The community opened in April 2011. Northwoods and Maple Crest Care Centres are members of the Symphony Post Acute Network, one of the county’s most innovative leaders in the delivery of post acute care and management services. As a family-oriented operation, Northwoods and Maple Crest take a uniquely personal approach to delivering the highest quality outcomes possible for their guests. Northwoods is among the first in the region to attain Joint Commission Certification for the new Post Acute Care Programming, which is a validation of their commitment to improving patient care. Northwoods, Maple Crest and the other facilities that make up the Symphony Post Acute Network, collaborate with physicians, nurses and discharge specialists to provide the best possible outcomes for their guests. The staff of nearly 200 are dedicated to the goal of consistently improving their level of care. Both short stays and long-term care are available. Through innovative solutions like the Stabilize, Treat, Assess and Transition (STAT) program, Maple Crest and Northwoods have made great strides in improving patient care, reducing length of stays and preventing 30-day rehospitalization. Maple Crest and Northwoods provide a complete range of rehabilitation treatment combining the disciplines of physical, speech, respiratory and occupational therapy. Maple Crest Care Centre is a preferred provider for OrthoIllinois. w
