2018 Signature Chamber Events The Best of Bloomingdale is a signature event designed to recognize outstanding members of the business community. This event reaches into the community, requesting nominations and incorporating a voting component to augment judging in the selection process. The Best of Bloomingdale culminates with an award dinner to acknowledge the nominees and recognize the recipients.

50 Men Who Cook & Divas Who Dish: A Taste of Bloomingdale Entering its 10th year, this casual evening features 50 prominent men and women from the greater Bloomingdale community, both amateur and professional chefs, who prepare tastings of their favorite recipes for event attendees to sample and judge. It is a multicourse culinary competition with everything from appetizers to desserts and benefits health and wellness programs within area schools. It includes musical entertainment and an amazing raffle full of prizes from local businesses.

Mayor’s Welcome Thanks to our residents and the business community for the support and feedback we received in 2017. I held a number of informal public “Meetings with the Mayor” this year which were an invaluable means to gather feedback and learn how we’re doing and gather feedback. The village board and I are committed to our core mission of revitalizing, redeveloping and renewing the excitement in our community while exercising financial discipline to ensure Bloomingdale continues to prosper. Last year, 2017, started with the opening of Mariano’s and every month thereafter, there were ribbon cuttings, grand openings, remodels and expansions. We welcomed Lakeview Memory Care, DuPage Medical Group, a variety of eateries, plus more than 15 new businesses in Stratford, including Wild 1 Harley Davidson, which opened in November. Our community events were no less exciting. From the concerts in Old Town Park to the July 4 fireworks at the Bloomingdale Golf Club to the 44th annual Septemberfest – the spirit of community reigned. Capping off the year, the Dec. 1 Lighting of the Bloomingdale Christmas Tree and Festival of Lights, drew more than 1,000 people. It was great to see Bloomingdale Chamber of Commerce members and Old Town businesses (current and soon-to-open) take part in the festivities. The entire event was a

wonderful finale to 2017, and a prelude to an exciting 2018 with more development in the works. In Old Town, Alcentro Trattoria (casual Italian restaurant) and Wolfden Brewery (craft beer brew pub) continue construction and are projected for spring and summer openings. Urban Air Bloomingdale, an indoor trampoline and adventure park, opened in January on the west end of Springbrook Shopping Center on Lake Street. Further east along Lake, the old Marathon gas station on the southeast corner of Lake and Circle was demolished to make way for a new Dunkin’ Donuts complete with drivethrough. Directly across, on the north side of Lake, the former Shell station will be Lucky’s Dog House (fast food hotdog/beef stand). Both restaurants project fall openings. Stratford Square Mall is also drawing new businesses. In spring, the new Harley Davidson store opens an outdoor motorcycle training facility and Picklemania (a Pickle Ball facility) will occupy space in the old JC Penney facility. Another welcome addition is the new 25 West (brew-pub restaurant) located in the old Ballydoyle space, opening this summer! We have enjoyed a great partnership with the Bloomingdale Chamber since its inception 36 years ago. Each year the chamber becomes more active in the community. As a local businessman, I believe the chamber is not only a great ambassador to the business community, but also an integral part of the community of Bloomingdale. Mayor Franco Coladipietro

Bloomingdale Shopping

Whether it’s one-of-a-kind wares or popular must-have items that you seek, Bloomingdale is where customers want to open their wallets. The village is home to an array of shopping destinations – from cozy, independent boutiques to more than 100 well-known department stores and shops that pepper Stratford Square. The 1.3-million-square-foot Stratford shopping center boasts about 125 stores and a variety of dining options, including two fullservice restaurants. The biggest project underway is 25 West Brewing Co., which is under construction and slated to open in summer 2018. The facility will feature a full restaurant and stateof-the-art brew house. Old Town Bloomingdale

One of Bloomingdale’s favorite spots is Old Town Square. Located at Lake Street and Bloomingdale Road, Old Town offers a collection of small retail and service businesses in restored buildings at the original site of the village’s first settlement. The oldest building in Bloomingdale, originally built in 1849 as the First Baptist Church of Christ, is now the Bloomingdale Park District Museum. With its original ceiling and knotty pine floors, it is now host to a variety of fine arts and cultural exhibits throughout the year. Additional cultural opportunities in Old Town include the park district’s summer concert series in Old Town Park or a visit to the Bloomingdale School of Music. The school, which has been serving the community since 1989, provides the highest quality music instruction in piano, voice and other string instruments. Bloomingdale Public Library The Bloomingdale Public Library has a rich history dating from 1975 when the library opened in two mobile classrooms. Today the library boasts an impressive 35,000-squarefoot, state-ofthe-art facility, complete with RFID technology, automated patron returns and freestanding self-checks. Recreation and Entertainment Bloomingdale is a recreation and entertainment destination – with multiple indoor and outdoor options to choose from. One of the most talked-about new businesses in town with an emphasis on fun and fitness is Urban Air Trampoline & Adventure Park at 140 E. Lake St. Opened in early 2018, the facility provides weekly events and birthday parties for all ages and fitness levels. It touts itself as a safe, fun, affordable activity for the whole family and was voted “best gym in America for kids” by Shape magazine. Other indoor options include Stratford Square, which strives to remain competitive by broadening its focus beyond department stores to create an “experience” that includes expanded entertainment options. Popular stops at Stratford Square include the Challenge Accepted escape room and “To Play VR” – a virtual reality center with 7D cinema and gaming options for little ones and adults alike. Other family fun includes a carousel, an indoor play area, the Fun Flatables play center and the Jolly Express children’s train. The banquet room can fit up to 220 guests and boasts a scenic view of the lush, meticulously landscaped grounds. Other outdoor activities include one of Bloomingdale’s hottest attractions in the summer months: Oasis Water Park, a welcome reprieve from the heat with three main feature areas: ‘Cuda Cove, Mango Bay and Otter Island. ‘Cuda Cove is an eightlane competitive pool with a drop slide and one- and three-meter diving boards. Mango Bay is a zero-depth leisure pool with geysers, spilling buckets, sprayers and water slides. Otter Island is an interactive water playground. The Oasis also features Coconut Cafe and a state-of-the-art bathhouse. The water park opens on June 2 this year. Also on June 2, this year, is Bike Bloomingdale where bike enthusiasts young and old can enjoy a bevy of bike activities at Circle Park and the Homola Picnic Shelter. Planned activities include a bike rodeo and safety lessons as well as a 1.7 mile family-friendly ride on nearby park trails manageable for even beginner riders. The main event beckons bike enthusiasts to take a 4- or 6.5-mile ride led by the mayor and other local officials.

Bloomingdale Park District

People – and projects – are on the move at Bloomingdale Park District. Some major revamping is in the works as the organization continues to tackle capital project repairs and improvements approved by the community via a recent referendum. One of the biggest overhauls on the horizon for2018 is at the Springfield Park Ballfield Complex, which is slated to be open to “play ball” in May. The renovation is designed to curb the widespread flooding that had been occurring on fields and nearby paths, according to Josh Hendricks, director of communications at the park district. Spring and summer mark the relocation of park district staff and programs to make way for the renovation of the Johnston Recreation Center. Staff will take up temporary residence at the Bloomingdale Park District Museum,

as well as in an existing storefront in Stratford Square Mall. Renovations are scheduled to wrap up by late 2019. Crews also are hard at work restoring the shorelines of the Springfield Park wetlands to address non-native, invasive species and to improve storm water management, Hendricks said. The final capital projected related to the 2016 referendum are upgrades and improvements to some recreation features at The Oasis Water Park. Namely, deck space will be enlarged and deck shade will be added, with a targeted completion date of summer 2019.
