he Benton Area Chamber of Commerce is a nonprofit, pro-business volunteer membership organization that is the voice of our business community as we provide myriad opportunities for further growth of our business community.

The Benton Area Chamber is the front door to the community. We answer phone calls every day and get hundreds of requests each year looking for various companies, services and general information about the area we serve. We constantly strive to promote and refer our business members to these people.

To our business members we offer an opportunity to network within the community through ribbon cuttings, business-after-hours, monthly luncheons, advertising opportunities and economic development. The Chamber strives to keep our business community involved in every phase of life in our area, always keeping an eye toward making Benton and the surrounding area a better place for all its citizens.

The Chamber works closely with the Advertising and Promotion Commission and the city in the operation of the Benton Event Center. The Saline County Economic Development office is also housed in our building.

2015 began in an exciting way as speaker Josh Altman offered business advice to our members at our annual banquet held in

February. The year continued as we presented to our members and the community the opportunity to enjoy social gatherings such as Savor the Flavor, Hook, Line and Chicken, Saline County Business Expo, and glitz & garland.

enton and Saline County include many historical sites to explore.

These landmarks, dating from both the city’s and surrounding area’s beginnings, provide a view into a rich past for presentday residents and visitors to enjoy.

The Gann Building, constructed of bauxite from local mines, is the only known structure of its kind in the United States. Built in 1893, it served as the office of Dr. Dewell Gann, Sr., until he donated it to the city of Benton to be used as a library. Today, it is the Gann Museum.

Here, an assortment of items that exhibit local history can be viewed.

A wonderful display of Benton Niloak pottery is always on display.

An important part of Benton’s rich history, the Saline County Courthouse with its landmark clock tower, has been expanded and renovated since its 1902 completion. Its tree-covered square with gazebo and brick-paved Veterans War Memorial is at the center of community life.

Bauxite Community Hall – located just next door in Bauxite, Arkansas – was erected in 1926 for the employees of the Aluminum Company of America. Not only does this building serve as a reminder of the people who lived and worked in the area, it celebrates the city and its history. The Bauxite Museum displays artifacts and memorabilia illustrating this company town’s unusual past.

The Royal Players, a local community theater group, performs downtown in a converted move theater. Look for the antique neon Royal theater sign and movie marquee. Drawing from a large pool of talent in Central Arkansas, the Royal Players produce five or six plays per year while their children’s theater and workshops round out an entire year of great theater.

Our Benton Event Center offers an opportunity for Benton residents and visitors to attend a variety of events. Outstanding events in 2015 included a Gun and Knife show, the Memphis Flea Market, Duck Duck Goose, and new in 2015 was Rhea Lana’s. A capacity crowd attended the Saline County Boys and Girls’ Club “A Night to be Great” and the Boys and Girls Club of Bryant’s “Gatsby Affair.” Civitan Services offered an exciting night to its attendees at its second “Murder at the Masquerade.” Habitat for Humanity had its annual “Home for the Heart” art show.

Under consideration now by a public/private partnership is the renovation of the Palace Theater, which was built in 1945. The

building has been used as a vaudeville theater, a community center for the youth, the Benton Public Library, and as storage for the Royal Players. The renovated building will be called the Palace Theater Arts and Heritage Center and will house various exhibits showing aspects of Saline County’s history including Niloak Pottery, It will also have designated areas to be used for teaching of the arts. Efforts are being made to attract government and foundation funding for the Center.

Also in the plans to help with the revitalization of Downtown Benton is the building of a Farmers Market and Multipurpose Pavilion. It will be located on the corner of Ashley and Main streets. The landscaping around the pavilion will extend under the giant mural that was completed in 2015.

A

sense of community obligations and cooperation radiates throughout the community. This is evident through the many nonprofit and/or charitable organizations, as well as by individuals and businesses ready and willing to assist these organizations and persons in need.

Because of all the community involvement, it is very difficult for the Benton Chamber of Commerce each year to select its Volunteer of the Year, Ambassador of the Year, Citizen of the Year and the newly established Visionary Award. Recognition is given to these community award winners at the First Thursday Award Luncheon in January.

The Churches Joint Council on Human Needs (CJOHN) as well as Vine and the Grape address the needs of individuals and families for requests ranging from food, clothing, toiletry articles, rent, utilities, lodging and gas.

Christian Community Care Center has been providing a variety of health care services to Saline County residents since 1999.

This nonprofit is funded by the generosity of area churches, civic organizations, businesses, and individuals. Local doctors, dentists, chiropractors, nurses, pharmacists, lab and X-ray technicians, and volunteers from all walks of life have come together to form the Christian Community Care Clinic.

Habitat for Humanity is devoted to addressing the issues of poverty housing and its mission is to bring volunteers together to build homes. Our local Habitat began in 1999 and has built 64 homes in Saline County. Habitat’s Partnership Village, just south of downtown Benton, now has 37 homes.

Benton Civitan Services offers needed help to people of all ages with developmental disabilities. After years of steadily increasing enrollment numbers in both the Civitan Preschool and the Adult Services program, another center was completed in 2015.

Civic organizations such as Rotary, Lions, and Kiwanis are also devoted to bettering the community through varied projects. Local businesses also play a great part in the education of our youth and betterment of our community.

All ages are aware of needs in our community. The Benton Middle School Elf Club is dedicated to helping other children in our community by making money and purchasing gifts.

uperior public and private schools within the Benton are at the forefront of providing early education for the very young to higher learning for the older.

Developing students into successful members of society is the mission of Benton Public Schools. By creating an environment that strives for excellence through constant improvement and encouraging ethical and honorable behavior within the classroom and beyond, the staff works to create opportunities for all students to succeed. Extracurricular activities are also integral to the District’s efforts to provide a well-rounded educational experience for its students.

Through the joint efforts of the school district, the Benton Area Chamber of Commerce, and sponsoring financial sponsor Everett Buick-GMC, students in grades nine through 12 are recognized each year as Arkansas Scholars. Graduating Arkansas Scholars are awarded white cords and receive financial scholarships from participating colleges.

Students who are looking for quality education in a small school environment need look no farther than Bauxite, Harmony Grove, and Glen Rose. These districts are within a 10-minute drive of Downtown Benton and offer quality education as well as many extracurricular activities.

Superintendents from the seven school districts in Saline County have been working together with the Saline County Economic Development Corporation in a Feasibility Study for a Saline County Career and Technical Education Campus. Many county business representatives have also been involved in the study by identifying both current and future skills and experience level needs as part of the early research and needs assessment that has been ongoing in 2015. Stantec Architecture of Berkley,

Michigan, a leader in career technical centers, has been hired as the consulting group for this project.

Benton residents don’t have to travel far for higher education. At our local University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) campus, Benton students can earn an Associate of Arts in general studies and then complete a four-year degree at the UALR main campus.

A four-year degree in E-commerce was added in the fall of 2012.

Pulaski Technical College – the largest, most rapidly growing two-year institution in Arkansas – offers more than 50 associate degrees and certification programs for students wishing to enter the workforce post-graduation or go on to a four-year university program. Its newest campus, Pulaski Technical-South, on I-30 between Benton and Little Rock, offers a wide variety of general college curriculum and developmental education courses. New to the college is the recently built Culinary and Hospitality Building.

With four universities and a major university teaching hospital all within an hour’s drive or less, Benton residents have many options for pursing undergraduate or graduate studies.

n close proximity to Little Rock and major transportation opportunities, Benton’s location provides an ideal business environment. The many industries located in Benton and surrounding communities possess both land and water freight transportation avenues at their disposal. The Saline County Regional Airport, located on a 1,200-acre site just southeast of Bryant can handle aircraft ranging from small private planes up through most large corporate jets. In 2015 a business office and traveler center was completed.

Many established industries such as industrial ceramics, pollution control systems, steel fabrication, veneer, gravel, asphalt and others already enjoy all Benton has to offer – great location, available land and low costs.

In late 2015 ACDI purchased the old Harvest Foods downtown and is beginning to construct its modern new building. Access Control Devices, Incorporated is a leading professional services company and the #1 distributor of PaperCut Software in North America and Canada. The company will bring up to 40 new high tech jobs to our downtown area and families to our community.

Home Depot, Sears, Walmart, Hallmark and Office Depot have contributed to the city’s growth. In 2015 Hurricane Creek Village was opened. Housed in it are major stores such as Academy Sports and Kroger.

he growth of Benton is being supported by the expansion of health care facilities and a medical community that brings forth caring, compassionate and professional attention.

Benton’s health care system offers superior facilities and representation in nearly all medical disciplines. Whether choosing a health professional, medical facility or other medical services, you can find these in our city.

As one of the five fastest-growing counties in Arkansas, Saline County has seen an increase in young families moving to the community, and Saline Memorial Hospital (SMH) has grown during the past 55 years to meet the demand for quality, convenient health care. More than 180 active and consulting physicians work by the side of trained health professionals to provide highly skilled, compassionate care.

At SMH, patients can expect quality health care with a personal touch. As a 177-bed, nonprofit community hospital and the largest employer in Saline County, SMH continually works toward expanding services to better meet the needs of patients and local residents. SMH has a strong tradition of providing charitable support to the residents of the community. Over the past three years, SMH has provided over $57 million in charity

and uncompensated care. No taxpayer or county dollars are used for operations. The hospital is sustained through the revenue generated through patient services, grants and private donations.

Over the past 10 years, SMH has expanded the emergency department and added a $9 million surgery center, a breast imaging center equipped with the latest in digital technology, a complete total joint program, a Sleep Center and a Wound Healing Center, and a Surgical Weight Loss Center. In 2012, SMH announced a relationship with Arkansas Heart Hospital to provide diagnostic, non-invasive testing and invasive services at SMH along with 24/7 call coverage. This partnership with Arkansas Heart hospital provides patients with the opportunity to receive care from specialists in Saline County and allows seamless access to specialty services at Arkansas Heart Hospital when appropriate.

In 2014, SMH opened an After Hours Clinic in Bryant to provide health care services for families who cannot make it to the doctor during regular hours. The clinic is open late from 5 to 8 p.m.

HEALTH CARE nursing care in a comfortable environment. In 2012, SMH opened a Central Arkansas Women’s Clinic off of Springhill Road to better meet the needs of women throughout the county.

The SMH Hospice House is a 16-bed inpatient facility in Bryant that provides the highest quality end-of-life care to patients and their families. SMH also offers Home Health services for those requiring medical care in the home.

Residents also benefit from the array of other health care providers located in the area. Baptist Health Systems has been serving the state of Arkansas for more than 80 years with the Baptist Health Therapy Center, Baptist Health Imaging Center and the Benton Family Clinic, located right in Benton.

Since 1985, Rivendell Behavioral Health has been committed to providing the best psychiatric and behavioral health care with the goal of supporting the whole family. Located in Benton, the center offers a full range of psychiatric and behavioral health treatment services for adults, adolescents and children.

The Arkansas Health Center, formerly known as the Benton Services Center, is a 310-bed psychiatric nursing home licensed by the Office of Long-Term Care as a skilled nursing facility.
